Best Things To Do in Yamba New South Wales

1. Shop at the Yamba Farmers and Producers Market

On Wednesday mornings, the carpark between Whiting and Turners beaches is the place to be when around 45 stallholders descend for the weekly Yamba Farmers and Producers Market.

You’ll find everything from fresh fruit and veggies to baked goods and local relishes. It’s held between 7 am and 11 am.

2. Explore Bundjalung National Park

Right on Yamba’s doorstep is Bundjalung National Park, a 210-square-kilometre protected area that encompasses coastal plains, heathland and deserted beaches. It is named after its traditional custodians, the Bundjalung people, and is a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking and fishing.

You can canoe along Jerusalem Creek, walk the length of Ten Mile Beach or don a mask and snorkel to explore the shallow reefs.

3. Hike through Yuraygir National Park

Around an hour’s drive south of Yamba is Yuraygir National Park, which protects New South Wales’ largest stretch of undeveloped coastline. In addition to isolated beaches and pristine lakes, you’ll find dramatic cliffs, dense forests and wildlife-filled wetlands.

One of the best ways to discover everything this natural wonderland has to offer is on the four-day Yuraygir Coastal Walk, although there are also plenty of shorter trails to explore.

4. watch the sunset from the break wall.

At the mouth of the Clarence River (between Whiting Beach and Turners Beach) is Yamba’s break wall, which was constructed between 1950 and 1971 to prevent sand buildup, as well as to buffer against large waves that might otherwise have damaged the town’s fishing fleet.

In the evenings, it is a popular spot to stroll and watch the sun go down to the west.

Yamba Lighthouse

5. Whale watch from the Yamba Lighthouse

One of Yamba’s most iconic landmarks is its whitewashed tower, which has been guiding ships along the coast since 1880. From its grassy base on Pilot Hill, there are magnificent views across the surrounding coastline, with occasional sightings of whales during the annual migration season (June to October).

Below the lighthouse is Yamba Point where seals can sometimes be seen sunning themselves on the rocks.

6. Follow the Historic Yamba Hill Walk

This three-kilometre-long walking trail takes in some of the most significant historic sights on Yamba Hill. Beginning at the Yamba Museum on River Street, you’ll traverse Norfolk Park and Turners Beach before taking in the Pacific Hotel and the site of the Star of the Sea Convent.

The route continues through Flinders Park and the Yamba Cemetery where many of the town’s most prominent residents are laid to rest.

7. Follow the Historic Yamba Flat Walk

Also beginning and ending at the Yamba Museum is this easier walk, which takes you past the Yamba Golf Club, the local fire station and the town’s sporting oval.

Admire the Yamba Lighthouse and the School Master’s Residence, then visit the Yamba Bowling Club before strolling beneath the Norfolk Island Pines that line Wooli Street.

Swim, surf and sunbathe on the beaches of Yamba

#8. yamba beach (main beach).

Closest to the town centre is Yamba Beach, which is home to the Yamba Surf Lifesaving Club and the photogenic Yamba Ocean Pool where locals come to do their morning laps.

While it’s generally safe for swimming (and is patrolled on weekends and during school holidays), the shore break can be heavy on big swells. If you just want to watch all the action, head to the Clifftop Pacific Hotel for a drink or grab a bite to eat at the Yamba Surf Lifesaving Club’s cafe.

There are toilets and outdoor showers where you can rinse off after your swim, as well as wheelchair access down to the sand.

Yamba Beach NSW

9. Convent Beach

Directly south of Yamba Beach is Convent Beach, which takes its name from a convent that overlooked the sand during the early 20th century.

It tends to be a bit quieter than the beaches on either side due to the rocks and boulders that make swimming more difficult than it first appears. That being said, there’s plenty of vegetation backing the sand if you’re after shade and you don’t have to worry about dangerous surf.

10. Pippi Beach

Named after the shellfish that can be found here at low tide, Pippi Beach is one of Yamba’s most popular stretches of sand in the busy summer months.

However, it can get wild during southern swells when it’s best to look for a more sheltered spot. During the summer holidays, Pippi Beach is patrolled by lifeguards and there are picnic tables and toilet facilities available.

The southern part of the beach is a leash-free area for dogs and accessible to 4WDs.

#11. Turners Beach

On the other side of the lighthouse from Yamba Beach is Turners, which is a popular spot for beginner surfers due to the protective break wall.

On the break wall, you’ll often see local anglers trying their luck and people strolling at sunset. A path leads up from the beach to the lighthouse, which dates from 1955 and offers magnificent views across the mouth of the Clarence River.

Toilets and picnic facilities are available at Turners Beach and lifeguards patrol here during the summer months.

#12. Whiting Beach

Whiting Beach stretches along the northeast coast of Hickey Island, which is actually attached to the mainland and is just a short walk from the town centre. As the beach faces the Clarence River, the waters here are calm and family-friendly for those with young children.

Even during the most ferocious ocean swells, Whiting Beach is usually a safe swimming bet. There are no lifeguards here but you will find picnic tables, toilets and outdoor showers.

Things to do in Yamba when it is raining

13. delve into the local history at the yamba museum.

Operated by the Port of Yamba Historical Society, this award-winning museum houses exhibits about the region’s Indigenous history and the town’s settlement in the late 19th century by Francis Freeburn.

Learn about the importance of fishing to Yamba’s economy and see models of ships that once sailed its treacherous waters, then discover how the town became a hotspot for holidaymakers. A highlight of the collection is a shark-bitten surfboard!

14. Be entertained at the Bowlo Leisure Centre

Boasting a state-of-the-art bowling alley, an 18-hole miniature golf course and a traverse rock climbing wall, the Bowlo Leisure Centre offers plenty of fun on a rainy day. There’s a soft play area that young kids and toddlers love, as well as an abundance of arcade games.

If the rain lets up, we’d also recommend a game of barefoot bowls, which takes place on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons during the summer months.

15. Sample gin at the Clarence Distillery

The Clarence Distillery crafts some of the best gin in New South Wales and you can enjoy a leisurely tasting at their distilling shed in Yamba.

In addition to tasting paddles, they can mix up creative cocktails that will appeal to all tastes. Make a day of it by ordering a delicious platter from Bowen’s Delicatessen to accompany your drinks.

16. Yamba Cinema

This long-running local cinema shows family favourites and Hollywood blockbusters on its single screen and there’s a candy bar where you can grab drinks and snacks. Film buffs should coincide their visit with the annual Yamba Cinema International Film Festival, which features long-table dinners and screenings of films from all corners of the globe.

Dog-friendly things to do in Yamba

Pippi beach things to do in Yamba

17. Let loose on the dog-friendly stretch of Pippi Beach

At the southern end of Pippi Beach (near Flat Rock), there’s a stretch of sand where dogs are free to run off their leash. In the mornings, it’s abuzz with activity as locals come to walk their four-legged friends and holidaying pups are more than welcome.

18. Explore one of Yamba’s walking trails

There are plenty of walking trails in and around Yamba where dogs can join you, provided they remain on their leash. You can explore with your pooch along the three-kilometre-long Yamba Hill Walk (which includes a medium slope) or opt for the easier Yamba Flat Walk.

19. Relax at a dog-friendly cafe

Many of Yamba’s cafes welcome patrons with pets, so you can grab a morning coffee or lunch without leaving your beloved dog behind.

For a relaxed bite to eat, head to the locals’ favourite Latitude 29 or the charming Caperberry Cafe. Modern Australian cuisine is dished up at Karrikin and Irons + Craig, both of which have pet-friendly seating.

Yamba Waterfalls

20. red cedar falls, dorrigo national park.

Red Cedar Falls is the largest Yamba waterfall located in Dorrigo National Park and is accessible along a four-kilometre-long hiking trail (one way). It takes you past towering red cedars and Bangalow palms before the sight of the falls plunging over the escarpment greets you.

There are wood barbecues and a picnic area near the base of the falls where you can stop for lunch before the return hike.

21. Crystal Shower Falls, Dorrigo National Park

Located along the Wonga Circuit, Crystal Shower Falls is fronted by a suspension bridge that offers impressive views of the pool below.

From the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre, a four-kilometre (return) trail winds through a lush tract of rainforest before taking you behind the waterfall itself. If you’re after a longer walk, you can continue to Tristania Falls before returning to your starting point.

22. Dalwood Falls

Nestled just inland from Ballina is Dalwood Falls, which tumbles into a picturesque waterhole that’s ideal for swimming.

In the past, it has been a popular spot for rock jumping but several people have come away with spinal injuries, so this is not advised. Dalwood Falls can get very busy but is an oasis on a hot, windy day when the beaches aren’t their best.

23. Boundary Falls, Gibraltar Range National Park

Located within Gibraltar Range National Park, Boundary Falls is a picturesque cascade surrounded by dry eucalypt forest.

It can be reached along a 200-metre-long walking trail from a picnic area and camping ground, which also offers access to Lyrebird Falls. At the base of Boundary Falls is a small pool where you can refresh with a dip.

Things to do in Yamba Visitors Guide

What is Yamba Famous for?

The Yaegl and Bundjalung people are the traditional custodians of Yamba, with the name “Yamba” believed to be an Indigenous word for a type of edible shellfish.

In 1799, Matthew Flinders stopped in Yamba Bay for six days, although it wasn’t until the mid-19th century that the town was officially founded. By the 1880s, fishing and oyster industries were established in the area, followed by prawn trawling. Today, sugar cane farming is a major money-maker for Yamba and the town’s flourishing tourism industry.

While Yamba has transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a sought-after holiday destination, it has managed to do so without losing its authenticity.

It boasts a wide choice of accommodation to suit all budgets and enough to keep singles, couples and families entertained. Aside from everything, there is to do in the town of Yamba itself, it’s also on the doorstep of Iluka’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed rainforest, the riverside town of Maclean and the legendary surf breaks of Angourie.

When is the best time to visit Yamba?

September through to April is considered the best time to visit Yamba when the weather is ideal for enjoying everything this beachside destination has to offer. During April/May and September/October, you can expect temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius before things heat up to the mid-30s by late December/early January. If you plan on travelling over the Christmas/New Year period, keep in mind that the summer school holidays are in full swing and accommodation books out well in advance.

Where can I snorkel in Yamba?

It might not be the Great Barrier Reef, but Yamba still boasts plenty of marine life to discover. Spooky Beach in neighbouring Angourie is a great snorkelling spot, as are Woody Head and Diggers Camp on the high tides.

Is Yamba the next Byron Bay?

According to many people, Yamba is the next Byron Bay. Located around 130 kilometres to the south, it shares many traits with its Northern Rivers neighbour, albeit without the crowds and sky-high real estate prices. While Yamba has transformed from a sleeping fishing town to a popular beachside destination in recent years, it has still managed to maintain its strong sense of community.

25+ Things to Do in Yamba: The Northern Rivers’ Most Authentic Beach Town

Yamba is the quintessential Australian surf town that keeps pulling us back.

I took Kelli to Yamba as part of our east-coast road trip when she first came to visit Australia in 2017, and we returned in 2021 as part of our Australia driving adventures , when we camped in the Yuraygir National Park.

We found ourselves back again, on a blowy autumn weekend in April 2023. Once again we were reminded that Yamba is one of the most picturesque and charming seaside towns on the eastern seaboard or, in fact, anywhere in Australia, with a unique combination of natural beauty, and timeless coastal charm.

Checking into our favorite accommodation, the loud, brash, and perfectly positioned Pacific Hotel, we posted a quick photo of the iconic view of Yamba’s headland from the equally iconic hotel, perched high on the cliffs above Main Beach. Immediately the phone began pinging.

“Yamba?” | “Where dis?” | “You guys in Yamba??!” | “Wow! What a view!” | “I love Yamba!” | “So beautiful!” |

Yamba tends to evoke that sort of response. Either an immediate sense of recognition and nostalgia from those who have been before or one of curiosity and awe from those yet to experience it.

One message came from our friend Alice, “ You should have told me you were going to Yamba!!! Wait, I am emailing you some recommendations .” And so she did, a carefully crafted list of the things to do and the things to swerve that she had been compiling over a lifetime of visiting Yamba with her family at their holiday home.

Armed with her email we set about trying out some of her recommendations of all the things to do in Yamba and nearby Angourie.

And now we present Alice’s Yamba Do, Eat, Drink, Shop recommendations as tested by us!

The Top 10 Best Things to Do in Yamba

1. Explore Yamba’s Beaches 2. Stay at the Pacific Hotel 3. Go Fishing 4. Explore the Angourie Blue and Green Pools 5. Walk the Breakwall 6. Dine at Karrikin 7. Go for a Surf or SUP 8. Have Fish and Chips at the Lighthouse 9. Enjoy the sunrise at Main Beach 10. Explore the Yuraygir National Park

Where Is Yamba?

Yamba is 7 hours north of Sydney, 3 hours south of Brisbane, and just over an hour from Byron Bay, and the nearest airport in Ballina.

It seems to be just far away enough from the throngs of local and international tourists that have (dare we say) ruined places like Surfers Paradise and Byron Bay… at least for now.

Yamba is perfectly located within a naturally abundant pocket of New South Wales’ Northern Rivers region. It is situated on the banks of the Clarence River just south of Iluka and just to the north of one of Australia’s prettiest and most important surf reserves, the tiny village of Angourie. Further to the south, the state’s largest coastal reserve, the stunning Yuraygir National Park covers 65 kilometers of rugged coastline.

Explore the Yamba Beaches

Of course, if you are going to the beach, you are likely going to want to spend some time with the sand between your toes. Yamba has an abundance of picturesque beaches just waiting to be discovered.

Main Beach, Yamba

Picture-perfect Main Beach at Yamba looks as though it has been lifted straight out of a postcard. Backed by cliffs, enclosed by beautiful stony headlands, fringed with pandanus, and complete with a tidal swimming pool, lifeguards, toilets, and surf life-saving club, it’s the perfect place to spend a beach day.

Access is via a steep walkway, and the little beach can get crowded in busy periods, but it is a must-see on your Yamba trip, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.

Convent Beach, Yamba

This pretty beach offers a small stretch of sand enclosed by two stone headlands and plenty of vegetation and beautiful pandanus palms providing shady nooks to escape the sun.

Explore the Angourie Beaches

Five kilometers south of Yamba is the iconic village of Angourie. A national surfing reserve made famous by the 70’s surf documentary Morning of the Earth and surrounded by the protected Yuraygir National Park it has retained its natural beauty and primitive feel.

Spooky Beach, Angourie

Spooky Beach is the first of the Angourie beaches. The beach itself is rugged and pretty with small boulders, pandanus, and rocky outcrops extending into the water. The beach is unpatrolled so swim at your own risk. When the swell is right you may see surfers here. Fishermen can also be spotted, casting off from the rocky outcrops.

Point Beach, Angourie

When the swell is up expect to find the point break packed with local surfers and the car park busy with spectators.

Absolutely stunning, and with one of the country’s most famous point breaks, Angourie and specifically the point have become an almost mythical mecca for Aussie surfers.

The grassy headland that juts out into the Pacific separating Angourie Point Beach and Angourie Back Beach is a beautiful short walk, take a picnic and relax on the headland, watching the surfers brave the powerful wave.

Back Beach, Angourie

A picturesque beach perfect for a long walk. Back beach has beautiful clear blue water and, often, a nice left-hander that peels off the point

The pools were formed when an excavated quarry was filled by an underground spring. They are popular for swimming, cliff jumping, and sunbathing. It is also a great spot for picnicking and relaxing in the natural surroundings.

The pools are sometimes closed due to algae bloom, and this is more common in the warmer months.

Yamba Bowls Club

In 2016, I had been dumped by my girlfriend, fired from my job, and the lease on my house was running out. Facing moving back in with my parents, 26, jobless and alone I decided to listen to the message the universe was trying to send me. I took off on my first solo backpacking trip, with a one-way ticket to Bangkok and a well-thumbed Lonely Planet guide. From there I wandered Southeast and Central Asia, traveled the Great Steppe, and made my way across Russia and throughout Europe.

In Estonia I met Kelli, who, despite having a less frantic travel style, shared my my restless spirit and passion for exploration. Together, we embarked on a new journey, van life. Over four years we travelled across three different continents with three different vans.

In 2022, as the world began to re-open post COVID we took an opportunity to realise a long held dream, to live aboard a sailboat. Since then we have spent two summers in the Mediterranean, sailing and living aboard our little sail boat Whisper. When we aren't sailing we continue to live our nomadic lifestyle, guided by a philosophy of slow travel and self directed adventure be it by van or backpacking.

We find excitement through our journey into the unknown, stillness and content in the beauty of the places we discover and we find ourselves in the vastness of our world.

Hopefully, we can help you find what you're looking for too. Get lost with us and find your own path.

Ultimate Guide of Things to Do in Yamba NSW

Are you wondering if Yamba is worth visiting on your East Coast trip ? It might seem like a quiet coastal town, but there are so many things to do in Yamba you are going to want to make sure you stop for at least a few nights. Northern NSW local Kathy Marris, who has been visiting for years, shares her tips with us below so you can hone down and decide what to do when you visit this NSW north coast gem.

There is no doubt that Yamba packs a punch as a cosy and compact beachside holiday destination. The town has it all, boasting a vibrant mix of award-winning restaurants, funky cafes and boutique shopping, plus it has a wide range of accommodation options. It’s an extremely popular holiday town for families and couples alike.

The meaning of the name Yamba could either be aboriginal for headland or the word “yumbah”, an edible shellfish.

Understandably, the traditional custodians of the Yamba region, the Yaegl and Bundjalung people, would have fished the river and tributaries for food. Today, Yamba still is essentially a sleepy fishing town that is evident with the number of fishing boats moored in the river.

Where is Yamba NSW?

Located in the bay with the Surf Club, ocean pool, and adjoining parklands. Also safe for swimming and surfing.

A long and flat beach with practically no waves; so is perfect for kids, kayakers, and stand-up paddle boarders.

Angourie’s other surf beach is fringed by beautiful Pandanus trees with a gentle shore break.

The Clarence River is a popular spot for watersports and fishing. Hickey Island Reserve is surrounded by water on both sides, this reserve includes Whiting Beach and Hickey Island Beach. It is a family-friendly place to swim, kayak, stand-up paddle or picnic.

  • Iluka Nature Reserve – For nature lovers, this is one of the largest remaining littoral rainforest regions in the state with a rainforest walking track.

Yamba does offer visitors and holidaymakers many choices when it comes to either relaxation or for those wanting a more active holiday. Yamba 1-Day Itinerary: the ultimate Yamba day trip

Opens in a new tab.

With numerous pristine beaches, fantastic surf breaks, impressive rocky headlands, and a quirky little town centre, Yamba makes the perfect destination for a coastal getaway. With its famous neighbour, Byron Bay, becoming increasingly overpopulated and losing its laid-back feel, Yamba has now been regarded as the New Byron .

During my recent trip, I visited Yamba after exploring Byron Bay. I must admit I enjoyed Yamba a lot more than Byron Bay ! As beautiful and convenient as Byron Bay can be, it was way more overpopulated and over-touristed than I have preferred. On the contrary, Yamba offers an equally beautiful coastline with various surfing beaches, yet it still retains that unpretentious and laid-back vibe .

Since most people tend to visit Yamba as a day trip or a stopover during their east coast road trip, I have compiled a detailed 1-day itinerary based on my recent visit to help you explore Yamba in only one day. I hope this article is helpful to you.

Where to Stay in Yamba

Many of these accommodations are also perfectly positioned in Yamba’s compact town centre or along its beautiful beachfront, which are all very convenient for getting around Yamba .

Hickey Island

Hickey Island

Hickey Island is a beautiful reserve at the mouth of Clarence River.

Surrounded by calm water and only a 5-minute walk from Yamba town centre , Hickey Island is a popular spot for a range of water sports. Guided kayak tours are available at Hickey Island, which can be a great opportunity for spotting dolphins. Kayak hires are also available at Hickey Island.

In addition to water activities, Hickey Island offers walking tracks and bike paths to bring visitors to the other end of Hickey Island. Various bird life around the island also makes Hickey Island the perfect spot for a peaceful and relaxing morning stroll.

With well-equipped picnic facilities and public toilets , Hickey Island also makes an excellent spot for a picnic if desired.

Whiting Beach

Whiting Beach is a long stretch of soft sandy beach on the northeastern end of Hickey Island. Protected by the breakwaters on both sides of the Clarence River Mouth, Whiting Beach is among the calmest and most peaceful beaches I have seen along the east coast .

This feature has made Whiting Beach a prime spot to swim for all ages . Kayaking and paddle-boarding are also very popular along this area of Hickey Island. People were fishing along Whiting Beach as well when I visited.

The only drawback about Whiting Beach is that dogs are not permitted on Whiting Beach, which can be tricky if you are travelling with your fur babies.

Yamba Breakwater

Yamba Farmers and Producers Market

After taking an early morning stroll around Hickey Island and Whiting Beach, make sure you also check out Yamba Farmers & Producers Market if visiting on a Wednesday.

Yamba Farmers & Producers Market is hosted in a little park, just outside of Hickey Island, between Whiting Beach and Turners Beach . It is only open on Wednesdays from 7 am to 11 am .

Being a favourite market among locals and visitors alike, the popular stuff does tend to sell out fast, so make sure you check it out early if possible.

Within Yamba Farmers & Producers Market, you can find a wide variety of locally sourced and made produce , ranging from fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat to tasty baked goods and gourmet treats. There is something for everyone to savour from this quaint little market.

Being perfectly positioned between two popular beaches and at the base of Yamba Breakwater, Yamba Farmers & Producers Market also serves as a great place to sample some delicious food for a picnic along the beach or the breakwater.

Yamba Breakwater

After visiting Yamba Farmers & Producers Market, be sure to stroll along Yamba Breakwater to check out where Clarence River meets the open ocean.

During a walk along Yamba Breakwater, you will find and be amazed by the contrasting view of peaceful water on the riverside and wild ocean swells on the ocean side . The breakwater also offers one of the best views of Yamba Lighthouse with the beautiful Turners Beach beneath it.

While walking along Yamba Breakwater, make sure you also pay attention to the water itself, as there are often pods of dolphins playing in the water.

Being one of the best fishing spots in Yamba, you will typically find people fishing along this rocky breakwater as well.

Turners Beach

Turners Beach

Turners Beach is a soft sandy beach nestled on the ocean end of Yamba Breakwater. Being partially protected by the breakwater and nearby headland, Turners Beach serves some fabulous surf breaks, making it an excellent place for both swimming and surfing .

In addition to its pristine sandy beach, you can also find a range of fascinating rock formations along the eastern end of Turners Beach. These tall rock formations also make great spots for admiring the wild Pacific Ocean in very close proximity.

When I say close, I mean when you are standing on some of these rocks, you can literally have the ocean waves splashing on the rocky cliffs right beside you & feel the water splashing on your face. There were no fences to stop people from going to the cliff edge when I was visiting. However, I highly suggest keeping a safe distance when you are there, as the waves can be pretty unpredictable!

If you are interested in fishing, I did see a few people fishing among these rock formations. I’m not sure how fruitful they were, but you may want to give it a go too.

Perfectly positioned right beneath the headland where Yamba Lighthouse stands, you can also find a small walking track just behind Turners Beach to head up Pilot Hill and check out the charming Yamba Lighthouse .

With that said, this short uphill walk can be challenging for some people. If that is the case, you can also take a 2-minute drive up Pilot Hill instead.

Yamba Lighthouse

Yamba Lighthouse

Yamba Lighthouse is an ivory-white lighthouse with beautiful blue trims. It is built near the edge of a stunning grassland on Pilot Hill and has been navigating ships in and out of Clarence River since 1880.

Although visitors can not access the inside of Yamba Lighthouse, the lookout beneath Yamba Lighthouse is worth a visit in its own right.

From the lookout, you can get a spectacular bird’s eye view of Clarence River Mouth, Yamba Breakwater, Turners Beach, and Iluka in the distance. With the soft grassland and impressive views, this spot is also perfect for a family picnic .

If interested, a replica of the historic Clarence River Lighthouse can be found across the road from Yamba Lighthouse. This building complex is quite interesting to check out as well.

Yamba Beach

Yamba Beach

Yamba Beach is also known as Yamba Main Beach. It is one of the most beautiful and well-equipped beaches in Yamba.

Located just a stone’s throw away from Yamba town centre, Yamba Beach offers free car parks, clean public toilets, convenient outdoor showers, great cafes, and ocean-front hotels . Picnic facilities are also available at Yamba Beach.

In addition to the various facilities, Yamba Beach offers a sandy beach with beautiful surf breaks, making it an excellent place for surfing, swimming, and sunbathing .

Towards the southern corner of Yamba Beach, you can also find a beautiful rock pool, Yamba Ocean Pool . With ocean waves continuously splashing into the pool, it is a refreshing and photogenic spot for a cool swim year-round.

To conclude your visit to Yamba Beach, you may wish to also check out Yamba Surf Life Saving Club or Pacific Hotel Yamba for a meal or a drink overlooking the stunning Yamba Beach.

Yamba Town Centre

As a small coastal town, Yamba offers a very compact town centre, with most restaurants and shops centred along Yamba Street, between Convent Lane and Wooli Street.

Although smaller than nearby Byron Bay, Yamba Town Centre still offers a good selection of grocery stores, bakeries, cafes, and restaurants. In my experience, it was a lot more enjoyable walking around the streets of Yamba in comparison to the overpopulated and over-commercialised Byron Bay.

Although serving different cuisines, many restaurants around Yamba are sourced from local produce, giving them another reason for you to check out. There are also a few cute boutiques around the town centre, which can be fun to check out as well.

Yamba is famous for its prawns, so make sure you also savour some local prawns during your visit. You can find them in the restaurants and shops within Yamba Town Centre. For the freshest catch of the day, you may also wish to check out the shops along Yamba Marina if interested.

Yamba

Other Beaches in Yamba

Yamba is known as a surf town because of the numerous surfing beaches around Yamba. In addition to the beaches mentioned above, there are a couple more beaches near Yamba Town Centre, which I highly recommend if time and weather permit.

Convent Beach

Convent Beach is another stunning surfing beach in Yamba. It is located south of Yamba Beach but well tucked away by the surrounding park and cliffs. Because of this, it is less frequented by visitors than other beaches in Yamba, making Convent Beach feels like a secluded private beach.

Dolphins are regularly spotted along Convent Beach, so look out for these cuties when visiting!

Pippi Beach

Pippi Beach is a long stretch of sandy beach south of Yamba Point. It is an excellent place for a sunset stroll . In addition to being a surfing beach, it is also a popular dog-friendly beach, with its southern end being an off-leash area .

Dolphins also frequent the water along Pippi Beach, making it a great spot to spot dolphins as well.

25 Best Things To Do In Yamba NSW 2024 Guide

It’s not all about beaches and surfing, discover the best things to do in Yamba in New South Wales as we share our personal highlights of this increasingly popular North Coast town.

If you’ve not already heard of the beautiful coastal town of Yamba yet, you’ll soon hear how it’s becoming the next Byron Bay. We’ve heard this all before in Queensland when we lived in Agnes Water which has been talked about supposedly becoming the next Noosa over the last 20 years.

It’s kinda a shame when small towns are hyped up and locals fear their town will never be the same, even though if it was ever to happen, it won’t happen overnight.

In saying that, we did notice new housing developments popping up in Yamba during our recent visit, which will ultimately drive prices up and the fear of pushing locals and the authentic vibe of the town further away.

Table of Contents

Why is Yamba always known to become the next Byron Bay?

yamba-beach

We’ve recently come back from our third visit to Yamba and personally didn’t believe the hype about it becoming the next Byron Bay. Firstly, Yamba is a 1h15m drive from the Ballina Airport, the nearest airport. Australians love convenience so if there’s no airport nearby, it’s going to be hard to change the town at speed.

The small town would need a big makeover to become Byron Bay with an influx of hipster cafes and restaurants to swing by at all times of the day. When we arrived at 3pm on a Sunday, we struggled to find anywhere still serving food.

But, what makes this town special is the authenticity, the laid back vibes and of course the stunning beaches and unique Angourie Blue and Green pools.

Obviously, Yamba attracts surfers but what’s also nice about this town is that you don’t feel like you’re constantly walking into a photoshoot as it can feel like walking down the street in Byron Bay (I say this because we had just spent three days in Byron before coming to Yamba and we noticed a massive difference).

Yamba is a classic Australian beach town that hasn’t been taken over with high rises, big resorts or fast food places, which is down to the locals protecting it over the years. How long it stays like this, I’m not sure. In this guide, we’re sharing our favourite places to visit and support the local businesses in this lovely coastal town in New South Wales.

If you’re looking for places to visit between Sydney and Byron Bay, check out our guide for the best 22 Places To Stop On Your Sydney To Byron Bay Road Trip .

Why you should visit Yamba

Angourie-rock-pool

If you’re looking to visit new places in NSW or simply want to discover an untouched beach town that has charm and character, Yamba could be the holiday option for you. It’s a coastal town in NSW we would come back to time and time again for a chilled out and relaxing beach holiday with epic ocean pools to float in.

Where is Yamba?

sydney-to-yamba-map

If you’re still unsure what on earth we’re talking about, Yamba is located exactly 1h30m from Byron Bay in the north and at the same time to Coffs Harbour in the south. It feels like it’s off the beaten path even if it’s a 15-minute drive off the Pacific Highway.

There are supermarkets in town like Coles and Woolworths but if you’re looking to go shopping, you’ll find more shops in Byron Bay.

If you’re driving from Sydney, it will take you 7 hours.

Best things to do in Yamba

best-things-to-do-in-yamba-nsw

While the town meanders around the Clarence River, the beaches in Yamba are such a big draw card, so we’ll start by giving you a rundown of them all to check out.

Yamba Beaches

There are so many Yamba beaches to choose from, so let’s get started and share some of our favourites you should make the effort to check out!

1. Main Beach

Yamba-beach

I think I always expect the Main Beach in town will be a big beach, but Yamba Main Beach is actually quite small. It’s a beautiful beach and actually one of my favourites as there’s something which feels quite magical about it.

Have lunch up at Pacific Hotel and soak up the views of Yamba Main Beach or enjoy spending time in the ocean pool here. It’s also popular with surfers too.

2. Turners Beach

Turners-beach-yamba

Turners Beach is another popular surfing beach in Yamba and is a stunning stretch of sand complete with picnic benches to sit and watch the surfers. It’s located on the other side of Main Beach which can be seen from the Yamba Lighthouse.

3. Whiting Beach

whiting-beach-yamba

Around the corner from Turners Beach will bring you to Whiting Beach which is a long beach and a bit more secluded than the popular Turners Beach or Yamba Main Beach.

4. Convent Beach

convent-beach-yamba

Convent Beach is just around the corner from Yamba Beach which feels more of a secluded beach although it’s quite rocky here but still worth a visit.

5. Pippi Beach

pippi-beach-yamba

We made a beeline to Pippi Beach as it’s a dog-friendly beach in Yamba. Go to the far southern end for the off leash dog area, but we also noticed that the northern end looked beautiful too.

6. Spooky Beach

spooky-beach-yamba

Don’t be scared off by Spooky Beach which is a lovely beach near to the famous Angourie Green and Blue Pools. It’s popular with surfers and has picnic tables so you can hang out there and have lunch if you like.

7. Green Point Beach (dog friendly)

Green-point-beach-yamba

We were pleasantly surprised by Green Point Beach. Although there’s lots of rocks to walk over to get to the small stretch of beach, there’s something quite magical about it. We really liked it here and would easily sit on the small stretch of sand while our dog would enjoy playing and sniffing around the rocks!

8. Angourie Blue & Green Pools

angourie-blue-and-green-pools

What makes Yamba really special is the Angourie Blue and Green Pools. The once rock quarry next to the ocean really is a sight to be seen! The walk down to the pools takes a few minutes from the car park and is so unique, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything else quite like it in Australia.

angourie-blue-pool-yamba

You’ll come to the Blue Pools in Yamba first, but check to see if you can swim in this one because there is green algae in there at certain times of the year.

angourie-green-pools

When you walk onto the beach from the Blue Pools, simply turn right and walk along the path for about 100 metres and you’ll come to the Green Pools. There’s something really special about this swimming hole that you’ll soon realise it when you get there.

The towering cliffs that light up the pool protect it with a beautiful energy. When we visited, there were a few people swimming here and climbing up the cliffs to jump in. If you do this, just be super careful. Bring a picnic and and you could hang out here all day!

9. The incredible Angourie rock pools

yamba-rock-pools

When you walk onto the beach from the Blue Pools, you’ll see the incredible Angourie rock pool in front of you. It’s got to be one of the best natural rock pools I’ve seen in Australia. It’s large and would make a brilliant lap pool, but what makes it special is that the water is crystal clear. No photos do this rock pool justice – trust me!

10. Angourie Point Beach

Angourie-point-beach

When we first visited Yamba, it was when we found Angourie Point Beach that made us truly appreciate this gorgeous coastal town. This beach feels more off the beaten path and it’s one we’d come back to time and time again in the future.

The Yamba Lighthouse is a spot everyone needs to come to when they are in town. With excellent views over looking Yamba Main Beach, Turners Beach and Whiting Beach in the distance, it’s a great spot to come and bring a picnic for the day.

13. Picnic at Turners Beach

turners-beach-yamba

Looking for more picnic spots in Yamba? You can’t go wrong with setting up camp at one of the picnic tables at Turners Beach. It’s a lovely spot to watch the surfers and feel like you’re a world away from it all.

14. Walk along the break wall

yamba-breakwall

The Yamba break wall is situated at the mouth of the Clarence River in Northern NSW. You can access the break wall from Turner’s Beach.

15. Explore the Angourie Walking Track

yamba-walks

If you’re looking for a lovely coastal walk in Yamba, why not do the Angourie Walking Track? This 10km return walk will take you from Angourie Beach to Shelly Beach Campground and take around 3-4 hours to complete. It’s definitely one on our list to complete next time we’re in town! Find out more about it on the NSW National Parks website .

16. Try the multi-day Yuraygir Coastal Walk

day trips yamba

Looking for an epic multi-day hike in Northern New South Wales? The Yuraygir Coastal Walk is a 65km multi-day hike which takes around 4 to 5 days to complete from Yamba to Red Rock, passing through Yuraygir National Park.

Located on the Clarence Coast, this is a fantastic walk for whale watching during the season, snorkelling and stops at beach campgrounds along the way. Find out more about completing this epic Yamba walk on the New South Wales National Parks website .

17. Family friendly ILuka Rainforest Walk

iluka-rainforest-walk-yamba

A 35 minute drive from Yamba will bring you to the other side of the mouth of the Clarence River and to the Iluka Rainforest walk. Wondering what makes this walk special? It’s part of the World Heritage Listed Gondwana Rainforest which is part of the largest and oldest sub-tropical rainforest in the world which stretches all the way from Barrington Tops and up to Lamington National Park in Gold Coast . We’ve seen quite a bit of the Gondwana Rainforest and it’s not to be missed!

The Iluka Rainforest Walk is a family friendly walk which is just 2.6km one way and will take you between 30 minutes – 1h30m return. You’ll pass through ancient strangler fig trees and plenty of diverse wildlife. Don’t miss this Yamba walk in Bungjalung National Park.

18. Yamba River Markets

day trips yamba

The Yamba River Markets take place every fourth Sunday of the Month at Ford Park on the Clarence River from 9am-2pm. Support local businesses and buy local produce, arts and crafts and watch local musicians perform at this chilled out market when you’re visiting Yamba.

19. Yamba Cinema

yamba-cinema

If you’re looking for things to do in Yamba when it’s raining, you can’t miss the family run Yamba Cinema which showcases newly released movies.

20. Play a game of lawn bowls

yamba-bowling-club

The Yamba Bowling Club is right in the middle of town and worth popping into if you’re looking for more things to do in Yamba!

Places to eat in Yamba

day trips yamba

Looking for the best Yamba restaurants and places to get a drink? Here are some of the places which stood out for us. During our recent visit to Yamba, we ended up having to cook dinner at our accommodation because we couldn’t find any dog friendly places to eat on a Sunday night.

21. Pacific Hotel

pacific-hotel-yamba

As far as local pubs go, the Pacific Hotel in Yamba is a trendy pub full of surfers and locals which sits overlooking Yamba Beach. It’s a shame there’s not a deck over looking the beach but there’s a courtyard out the front of the pub.

We’ve been here a few times now but on our recent visit, because we had our dog, the only spot we could sit was with the smokers in the courtyard so we didn’t stay as we wanted to get some food. Just giving you a heads up if you’re thinking of bringing your dog and you’re non smokers too.

22. Woobly Chook Brewery

woobly-chook-brewery-yamba

The new Yamba brewery in town called Woobly Chook Brewery is worth a pop into. Located right in the heart of town on Coldstream Street, this micro brewery serves up local beer and loads of merchandise too if you’re into buying brewery tshirts etc.

23. Yamba Life

yamba-life-cafe

When we arrived in Yamba around 3pm on a Saturday, the only place we could find that was still serving food was Yamba Life. We picked up a salad and a chia pudding and both were excellent. If you’re looking for good healthy takeaway food to take down to the beach, this is the place to come to.

24. Angourie Cafe & Wine Bar

angourie-cafe-and-bar

We stopped off at Angourie Cafe & Wine Bar for an acai bowl as it was a super hot day and we loved this little place. It’s the kind of place you could easily bring your laptop and work from for the day, while feeling like you’re on holiday. They have live music on Sundays but we’d also come back in the evening too.

25. The Italian On The Hill

the-italian-on-the-hill-yamba-restaurant

We made a beeline to the Italian On the Hill when we first came to Yamba and it really doesn’t disappoint. One thing I remembered is how amazing the pannacotta truly is – make sure you order it!

Other restaurants to consider

day trips yamba

We’ve got a few other places on our list to visit next time and we’ll update this article to let you know what we thought of them. Our list includes:

Sassafras – this is super popular Yamba restaurant and even had loads of people waiting outside when we drove past it. We also went to check out the Yamba Shores Tavern which is located just slightly outside of town which is essentially a club. We couldn’t get in as we had our dog but it’s worth a mention if you’re looking to a traditional NSW club to eat at.

We’ve also got The Mexican, Irons and Craig, The Black Cafe, Norfolk Bistro and Sandbar on our list to visit next time!

Where to stay in Yamba

We’ve stayed in loads of different places around Yamba but we’d personally stay in Angourie next time just because it really is lovely on that side of town, and much quieter. Plus, we’d have access to that epic Angourie rockpool as well.

  • Angourie Resort – Offers a day spa, an outdoor pool, a tennis court and a restaurant and is a 5 minute drive from Yamba Beach.
  • Paperbark – Central Angourie Location -2 bedroom apartment with tennis courts, located 1 minute from the beach.
  • Palmberry – Romantic Getaway – absolutely stunning holiday home
  • The Sands Resort at Yamba – a stones throw from Pippi Beach with heated spa, outdoor pool and 2 tennis courts!

Best Things To Do In Yamba

I’m so glad I’ve stumbled across your site, you have some great tips!

I’m a Yamba local and British expat. Its lovely to read about your experience in our little town… and you are absolutely correct about the idea that Yamba will become the next Byron Bay! For your next visit, you mentioned you would like to visit Iron’s & Craig – unfortunately they are no more 🙁 But please make sure you head down to The Kiosk located at Main Beach – they have had to close for most of the year due to the dreadful weather and flooding we had in the region. The rain caused a huge sink hole in the driveway down to main beach which was a massive disruption not only to this small business but our community! Just another tip – the Angourie locals would not like to be called Yamba! Its very much its own community – ha ha!! Yamba would never claim it as their own. I would love you to try out Yamba Kayaks – the guys that run the tours are amazing and to see Yamba from the river really is an experience not be missed. Yamba was built on the mighty Clarence and it has served our community well!

Hi Helen, thanks so much for the tips and wow, lucky you for being able to live in such a cool little part of the world!

What to See on a Day Trip to Yamba

What to See on a Day Trip to Yamba

  • Byron Bay Activities
  • Byron Bay Holiday Guide

If you’re on a short holiday to Byron Bay or staying for a longer hiatus from the real world, a day trip or two from the area makes a nice addition to your itinerary. We suggest you do a day trip  from Byron Bay to Yamba , just head south on the Pacific Highway about 125km to find this little surfing town . There you’ll find a quaint one-street village, friendly locals who love their town, beaches where you may actually be alone and amazing seafood as well as lots of other things to do in Yamba.

But where is Yamba? Located at the mouth of Clarence River, Yamba features 11 beaches in its area, featuring dolphins often hanging out near the shore, excellent whale watching in season and so much more. Yamba has been listed as the no. 1 town in Australia by the Australian Traveller magazine and was named as having the best climate in the world by CSIRO (along with Banbury, Australia, and San Diego, California, U.S.).

Surfing and Beaches

yamba-waves

Dolphins surf the waves at Yamba. Source: Surf Nation

First off, don’t miss out on the chance to ride some amazing waves here if surfing is your thing—keep in mind that Nat Young and Mick Fanning are known to hang ten here and the owner of the famous Billabong surfing brand calls Yamba home. Because it’s not crowded, you won’t have a problem catching the best waves.

Or try a lesson with a local surfing school as one of the best things to do in Yamba—less crowds means more individual attention. For example, you could try it with Yamba-Angourie Surf School where you can get a two-hour group lesson for $50 or one-hour private lesson for $80. Lessons are held at Turners Beach.

Speaking of Angourie, you really should hit up the Angourie Beach while in town. Besides being an excellent surfing location, Angourie is home to the ‘Blue Pool’ which sits in a bush setting right near the beach and is a deep freshwater swimming hole. Put this on your list of things to do in Yamba and plan to take a swim and have a picnic lunch. But make sure to check the signs at the entrance to ensure it’s safe to swim, since naturally occurring algae can render it unsafe.

Clarence River

Kayaking in Yamba. Source: Yamba Kayak

Not only is Yamba a coastal town, it also happens to be along the Clarence River. Take a Clarence River Ferry on either its river ruise (leaves at 11 am on Wednesdays and Fridays) or just ride one of the daily ferries across the river to Iluka where you can see boats at the harbour that catch Yamba’s famous prawns.

Another way to see the Clarence River is opt for a kayak tour through Yamba Kayak . One of the recommended Yamba attractions , this company offers up a three-hour tour of the waterways and beaches around the river. The cost is $70 per adult and $60 for children under 16.

Yamba Hist orical Walks

Learn about the history of Yamba —how it was discovered by explorer Matthew Flinders in 1799—through one of the Yamba Historical Walks where you’ll see such sights as the Yamba Lighthouse and Flinders Wall. Both self-guided tours start and finish at the Yamba Museum; both are 3km walks with one considered an easier grade than the other. There are guides to tell you about the sights you will see along the way on both walks, so check them out online or pick up the paper version at the museum.

Don’t miss the prawns

Yamba Tavern

Try yummy prawns at Yamba Tavern. Source: Yamba Tavern

Collected daily, one of the other big Yamba attractions is great seafood, particularly the prawns , which are famous for being amazingly good. For example, Sassafras offers up plenty of prawns, including a prawn pizza. Or better yet, head for Yamba Shores Tavern where you can dine on any of the many variety of prawn dishes and enjoy the fabulous waterfront view. There’s even a playground on site if you have the kids along! Also, you should note that TripAdvisor’s no. 1 restaurant in Yamba is part of the Shores Tavern, Boardroom and Bar .

Stay at Broken Head while seeing Byron Bay and Yamba

When you stay at Broken Head Holiday Park you’ll be in a great location to not only see Byron Bay proper, but also head further south to Yamba for a fun day trip . Whether you pick the campsites, beach shacks or beach cabins, Broken Head Holiday Park’s accommodation will provide a comfortable place to sleep each night after busy days touring around anywhere from Byron Bay to Yamba. So book yourself a holiday soon!

4 Days in Yamba Itinerary

Yamba truly has something for everyone with its pristine beaches, stunning waterways, and laid-back vibe..

Whether you’re a beach lover, an avid surfer or a keen angler, this charming town is sure to captivate you with its natural beauty and endless activities. Join us for a four-day family-friendly itinerary as we showcase some of the best that Yamba has to offer, from its gorgeous beaches and estuaries to its vibrant food scene and unique shopping experiences. Soak up the sun, feel the sand between your toes, and immerse yourself in the relaxed coastal lifestyle – it’s all waiting for you in Yamba.

Yamba on Yaegl Country

Welcome to Yamba, and welcome to paradise! On arrival, check in to the Blue Dolphin Holiday Resort , where the fun can begin.

After you’ve settled in, walk to town and head to Yamba’s Main Beach , where it’s time to relax and enjoy this kid-friendly sheltered beach and its iconic Ocean pool . There is a great café here, The Kiosk , which is way fancier than just chips on the beach. Think acai bowls, healthy smoothies, and smashed avocado on toast. The kids will love having food options quite literally ON the beach.

After a morning of sandcastle building and jumping waves, grab a takeaway lunch and head to the Blue pools in Angourie . Pop down a picnic blanket and enjoy the serenity as you surround yourself with the old rock quarry.

Fun fact: Legend has it, the pools were formed totally by mistake when a freshwater spring was disturbed in the quarry, transforming it into an aquatic haven. The kids will love exploring the pools, the braver will jump from the rock wall, or while the littlies explore the rockpools with the many sea creatures that inhabitant them.

Head back for a siesta at the Blue Dolphin Holiday Resort and enjoy the kids-friendly facilities it offers, such as kids’ pools, kids’ game areas, and a new scooter track.

In the afternoon grab a few bikes from the resort and head into town, taking in the news from the bike-friendly Yamba break wall (where the Clarence River flows into the ocean).  You may spot dolphins here that frequently visit the river mouth and follow the trawlers for their afternoon tea. There’s a life!

Head over to the famous Lighthouse and enjoy panoramic views over the ocean.

Time for dinner? Enjoy a lovely meal at Sassafras , a large family-friendly Pizza restaurant near the main street. It’ll be hard to choose between their famous Yamba Prawn pizza or pasta dishes made from locally sourced produce, but please do yourself a favour and get the rat baits as you peruse the menu, freshly baked bread balls with a selection of homemade butters… Yum!

On your way home to the Blue Dolphin you will pass Yamba Icecreamery where you’ll find a huge selection of homemade ice creams and sorbets made from local produce. It would be rude not to right? Just save room for some Ferrero Rocher flavour for us, please.

Pacific Hotel Yamba

Iluka on Yaegl Country

The best (and most fun) way to reach Iluka is by ferry from Yamba. A scenic 45-minute passenger ferry ride will take you across the Clarence River in style. If you choose to go on a Sunday, don’t forget your dancing shoes, as the Sunday Cruise offers live music from one of many local bands/artists. And no, its not karaoke so put your microphone away!

Bring the kid’s scooters along and enjoy a 25-minute stroll/scooter along the river to the charming seaside town of Iluka . There happens to be an awesome playground on the river along the way, which will be a great stop for the kids to run around on the way to town.

day trips yamba

Grab a coffee in downtown Iluka, while here stroll the quaint shops and discover Iluka Emporium – An eclectic art space featuring distinctive local art, upcycled objects, books, and collectibles.

After an energising coffee and morning tea from Freshwater Kitchen located in town head over to the incredibly peaceful Iluka Nature Reserve & Bundjalung National Park (stop at the local bakery in town to stock up on some lunch supplies for the hike) – immerse yourself in a 1.5 hour return walk through an ancient forest which just happens to be one of the oldest established forest in the region. The kids will enjoy looking out for all wildlife, listening for the bird calls, and finding interesting tree branches that twine around each other.

At the halfway point, you reach Iluka Bluff to catch the spectacular 360-degree views out over the coast and inland forest. Unpack your picnic lunch and enjoy rest time, either on the grassy headlands or right on the beach before ending back the way you came.

Once back in Yamba (after returning on the ferry), head to Yamba Bowlo for some mini golf, ten pin or to watch the kids attempt the climbing wall. Or if golf is your thing, head over to Yamba Golf club for some dinner and your chance to claim glory on their brand new virtual golf simulator.

A short walk home to the Blue Dolphin where you’ll spend the night preparing for another fun packed day tomorrow.

Maclean on Yaegl Country

While Yamba has everything you need for an action-filled holiday, the Clarence Valley has lots of great towns you’ll want to explore while you’re here. So today, we’re heading out and about. A 30-minute drive out of Yamba will take you to the Scottish-inspired town of Maclean . Notice all the Tartan-Painted Power Poles? Pick up a map from the Scottish Shop and try and find your Scottish name and tartan. Don’t worry if you don’t have Scottish Heritage, just adopt the tartan you like best and Scottish name for the day.

day trips yamba

While you’re in town, head on up to the Maclean Lookout for spectacular views of the Clarence Valley. Look over the valley from the viewing platform and spot The Pinnacle, a unique rock formation surrounded by subtropical rainforest, and an important Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Site. In fact, Maclean lookout, or The Giant Serpent, is the number 1 stop on the Lower Clarence Aboriginal Tourism Site Drive, the first project of its kind in Australia. You can learn the importance of Aboriginal Culture and 13 Yaegl significant sites from Maclean to Yamba.

Do you smell that roasted coffee? Follow your nose and find Botero where coffee roasters perform their weekly ritual of perfecting the best possible coffee combination in-house. Enjoy outdoor seating with an adjacent playground or perhaps the kids will love the Lego room. Quite literally, a room full of white Legos.

Lawrence on Yagel County

From Maclean, drive across the McFarlane Bridge onto Woodford Island to head to Bluff Point Ferry. Fun Fact (in case the kids are keeping track) Woodford Island is the largest island in NSW.

Take the famous Bluff Point Ferry, known fondly as the Lawrence Ferry, which will carry you calmly across the Clarence River to Lawrence . In true country town style, there is no timetable and no fees, and the ferry operates 24/7. What an adventure. Fun Fact #581: there are only 11 car ferries left in NSW!

Head down to the local playground complete with bike tracks and flying fox, you may have to drag the kids away eventually to get a move on. Try to bribe them with ice cream from the General Store across the road. It may just work.

Grafton on Bundjalung country

From Lawrence drive Tourist Drive 22 which follows the river all the way to the historic town of  Grafton . Pop down to the Grafton Regional Gallery and get inspired by word class exhibitions – grab lunch at the stunning courtyard at Rubony’s café at the Gallery or take part in one of the many workshops that are held here, especially during school holidays.

After lunch stroll down to Grafton’s main street and admire the historic buildings, it’s like walking back in time. You may have to answer some interesting questions from the kids on what each building is so make sure you pick up the Grafton Heritage Trail brochure from the at the Regional Gallery while you’re there.

If it’s raining and someone (usually dad) forgot his umbrella again, just catch a family movie at the Saraton Theatre instead.  This theatre dates back to 1925 and is simply stunning. The kids will love the old charm feel and a movie with a choc top of course. This theatre is licensed, so mum and dad can grab a drink while here too.

As you head back to Yamba, just imagine the fresh prawns you can pick up from the local Fishos for a quiet evening in the holiday park, peeling prawns and taking in one of the famous Yamba sunsets. What a perfect end to a fun-filled day.

If there is one phrase you’ll hear a lot around here, it’s “You’re on Yamba Time”. The giant clock on Coldstream Street, the one outside Wobbly Chook Brewery doesn’t even work and is for decoration only, time stands still quite literally. You are on Yamba Time now which basically means you have the freedom to take your time, take it all in, and take each moment at a time.

When your biggest decision today will be which beach to take the kids to. Whiting Beach , where the river is calm and perfect for paddle boarding or little legs who don’t like waves. Turners , where you’ll find surfers and body boarders putting on a show for people walking the break wall. Pippi , where you can take the dog to the South, or catch waves in the North. Or maybe even Convent , a lesser-known hidden beach, the local’s favourite where you’re pretty much always protected from the wind, enjoy shade from the Pandanus trees, and can find a nice quiet spot to relax. Wherever you end up, take some snacks because the kids will need the energy after all the swimming and shell searching.

Learn about Yamba’s history and take a tour of Yamba Museum , where the kids are on the hunt for hidden mice (no actual mice were harmed in the making of this quirky treasure hunt).

As you walk through town, check out the boutique shops and popular cafes where you can decide if it’s time for morning tea, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, or all combined! You’re on Yamba time remember!

The newly upgraded skate park , complete with a huge clover bowl, is the key attraction for kids under the age of 80. From behind your hands, you can watch as the kids take on the half pipes and other obstacles that test their fear and your patience!

Let the day come to an end by catching yet another spectacular sunset in this perfect little town, creating family memories for years to come. We’ll see you again soon just like so many other families generation after generation. Yamba is home now.

While you’re here, don’t forget to tag us on your adventures at #myclarencevalley!

It’s a great time for outdoor activities, and the ocean remains inviting for those interested in water sports. The weather is generally comfortable, making it a good time to explore the coastal areas and enjoy nature.

Things To Do In Yamba, NSW

From roaming the markets to combing the beach, Yamba attractions are all about laid-back beachside living.

Visit Yamba Beaches

The biggest draw to Yamba is its beautiful beaches. Yamba has  five pristine  beaches  to choose from in town and many other gems in the surrounding area.

Yamba Main Beach

Just steps from the quaint streets of town, Yamba Main Beach is a  peaceful, sandy haven with an awesome ocean pool . The Yamba ocean pool is built right into the rocks where seawater pours in, and changing tides continuously splash and clean the water.

The Yamba beach itself is set at the foot of the iconic Pacific Hotel, surrounded by bluffs and rolling waves that sweep the shore. It’s home to one of the  oldest surf clubs in the world  and has a  great cafe, The Kiosk , to grab a cup of coffee.

Pippi Beach

Located South of Yamba Point, Pippi Beach is an idyllic place to visit for a sunset stroll and an enjoyable view. Strong  southern swells can thrash at Pippi  Beach , but on calm days, this 1.6km stretch of beach is lovely. Plus, Flat Rock has an  off-leash dog area  on the south end, which is perfect if you’re travelling with pets.

Turners Beach

Probably the best surf beach in Yamba, Turners Beach is the perfect spot for  surfing, swimming, and fishing . It’s on the other side of the Yamba Lighthouse from Main Beach and is just a short walk from the town centre. Pack a picnic and spend an afternoon  fishing off the break wall  as surfers pound the passing waves.

View of the Pacific Ocean from Wooli Park, Yamba, NSW

Whiting Beach

While the waves at Pippi are roaring, the  sheltered cove  at Whiting Beach is always calm and unruffled. Just a short stroll from the coastal town, Whiting Beach is an  ideal beach for  families with kids  and those wanting to enjoy a mellow paddle.

Convent Beach

The shady shores at Convent Beach are  peaceful and secluded  despite sitting at the edge of town. Backed by rocky bluffs and lush vegetation, Convent Beach feels tucked away and sheltered. Ideal for a quiet time by the ocean and sunbathing. It gets its name from the former nunnery that previously overlooked it, which has been closed for a long time. It’s a bit rocky as a swimming spot but makes for a nice place to  relax and look for dolphins.

Visit Angourie Point + Blue And Green Pools

If surfing is on your agenda, venture down to Angourie Point and hit  one of the best right-hand point breaks in Australia . The small seaside village is just 10 minutes south of Yamba and is well worth a visit. The Angourie beach is a  national surfing reserve  with its own roster of incredible beaches to explore.

Spend the day at  Back Beach or Spooky’s  before heading up to the  lookout  for a postcard-worthy vantage point that’s likely to feature whales and dolphins.

Beyond surfing, Angourie’s  Blue and Green Pools are a must-see  for travellers visiting the Clarence Valley. The freshwater pools are said to be the result of an old mining quarry, but now, they serve as a swimming hole favoured by locals. The vibrant-coloured water appears bottomless and is a  haven for cliff jumping . After a cool dip on a hot day, head over to  Cafe Angourie  for a coffee or yummy vegan bowl.

Go For Scenic Walks

Retrace history around town or embark on a coastal adventure through the Clarence Valley.

Historic Yamba Hill Walk

There are two different historic walking trails that hit some of Yamba’s most iconic landmarks. For a hilly stroll, the  Yamba Hill Walk  is a 4 km journey around the perimeter of town that takes about 2 hours. If you want to keep things at sea level, the  Flat Walk  is a 3-km trail that allows you to explore the north end of town without the steep grades.

Both tracks are  self-guided  and follow the steps of 18th-century explorer Matthew Flinders. You’ll pass by  Flinders Well , the  Yamba Lighthouse , and the  Yamba Museum , where you can pick up a trail map.

Turner’s Breakwall

The breakwall at Turner’s Beach is a great place to  go for a stroll and  to  watch the surfers . The rocky wall extends into the mouth of the Clarence River, so you’ll have a great view of Turners Beach and the Lighthouse. You’re likely to find the breakwall lined with anglers, as it’s  one of the best fishing spots in Yamba.

Turners Beach, Yamba, New South Wales

Yuraygir Coastal Walk

If you’re feeling adventurous and have a few days to spend in Yamba, the  Yuraygir Coastal Walk  is a real gem to visit. This  multi-day hike  begins in Angourie and ventures through Yuraygir National Park, about 65 km down to Red Rock. The scenery is spectacular and follows  beaches, lagoons, and rocky headlands  along trails once crossed by coastal emus. The hike usually takes 4-5 days (one way) and has loads of opportunities for snorkelling, swimming, camping, and wildlife viewing.

Visit The Markets

On the last Sunday of every month, the  Yamba River Markets  are filled with stalls offering local clothing, jewellery, and food. The market is a fun place to wander around and check out pieces by local artists and musicians.

The  Yamba Farmers & Producers Market  runs every Wednesday and features some of the best fresh produce and meats from the region. Pick up a loaf of organic sourdough, Turkish pastries, and some Byron Bay salami and head to Turners Beach for a picnic.

Yamba, New South Wales

Best Restaurants Yamba, Australia

Spoiled with amazing fishing, Yamba restaurants serve up a mean plate of seafood with lots of veggie options, too.

Showcasing the absolute best that the region has to offer, Karrikin is a true Yamba treasure. The restaurant’s concept is all about  celebrating Australian cuisine by connecting your food to your surroundings . The restaurant uses all  local and seasonal ingredients  sourced from the Clarence Valley to help the food scene thrive. With an emphasis on social dining, it’s a great spot for groups, offering shared plates and an ever-changing menu.

Pacific Hotel

A Yamba, NSW staple, the Pacific Hotel is one of the best places to grab a beer and look out over Yamba Bay. The Hotel has been  beloved by locals since the 1930s  and is a bustling hub for casual dining and live music. The bar offers a menu of pub grub that goes great with an ice-cold beer and a sunset. The Pacific Hotel has  some of the best real estate in Yamba  so grab a seat and enjoy the view!

A cozy cafe in the heart of Yamba,   Good Days  serves up delicious and nutritious snacks and beverages. They brew specialty organic coffee from Melbourne’s  Padre Coffee  alongside fresh smoothies and cold-pressed juices. They also offer a roster of  tasty vegan treats  like banana bread and acai bowls.

If you’ve come to Yamba in search of local seafood, look no further than Sandbar. Sandbar is run by a third-generation fishing family that serves  “ocean to table” style dining  that’s as fresh as it gets. The menu is entirely based on what the trawlers catch that day, which is always incredible coming from Yamba’s pristine waters.

Sandbar offers tapas and share plates, along with a delightful breakfast menu. Everything they serve is  local to Yamba or its surrounding seaside villages,  with a focus on quality and community.

Yamba Ice Creamery

No trip to Yamba is complete without a scoop (or three) from the Yamba Ice Creamery. This place has  fresh Italian-style gelato  that makes my mouth water just thinking about it! It’s our favourite ice cream place in Australia, and a must-try for any Yamba visitor.

Beaches located in small towns give you that calming and welcoming feels for some reason. They also serve the best food! The thought of being in Sandbar after surfing is mouth-watering. I will definitely add Yamba to my list.

5 reasons Yamba is the new Byron Bay

Byron Bay has long been an extremely popular destination for Australian road trips. Promising sand, surf, sun, and celebrity spotting, the Bay is renowned for its allure.

But move over Byron Bay – there’s a new hotspot in town and its lesser known location means that there are far fewer visitors to contend with.

So if you’re looking for NSW road trips, Yamba is not only closer to Sydney, but is also the new Byron Bay. Here are five reasons why!

1. Incredible surfing

It’s hardly a NSW beach without offering epic surfing breaks, and Yamba has these in spades.

Head to Turners Beach to watch the surfers take on the waves, or paddle out to join them. This beach also has a more sheltered area for swimming if you prefer.

For something more challenging, make a beeline for Angourie, which is a national surf reserve and a favourite amongst pros. Top level surfers can also try Spooky Point and Life & Death.

2. The gorgeous Yamba lighthouse

As popular with walkers as it is amongst Instagrammers, the Cape Byron Lighthouse is a favourite fixture on the scene – and Yamba has one of its own.

Take your fish’n’chips up to the Yamba Lighthouse behind Turners Beach to relax on the large grassy area of Pilot Hill. There’s a set of stairs from the carpark, or you can try the more adventurous route of climbing over the rocks.

3. Ample wildlife

There’s certainly plenty of wildlife to be found in Yamba. Bring a set of binoculars to take a good look at the dolphins just off shore, and keep an eye out for Humpback Whales during their annual migration from April to August. Or take a hike on the headlands and you’ll likely spot emu, wallabies, and kangaroos, and don’t forget to explore the countless rock pools along the shoreline to see what you can find.

Yamba is also a bird watcher’s paradise, especially as it is quieter than its more famous northern neighbour.

4. The Yuraygir Coastal Walk

Forget the Cape Byron Walking Track – it’s time for the Yuraygir Coastal Walk to shine.

This multi-day hike follows the Clarence Coast and is bejewelled with beautiful places to stop for picnics, snorkelling, and swimming. It’s 65 kilometres one way, so generally takes four to five days to complete, or you can pick a section and stick with a quick day hike.

5. The inviting golden sands

Of all the things to do in Yamba, simply relaxing on the beach is one of the easiest and most rewarding.

Yamba Beach is the main spot to go, but there are countless stretches of sand where you can stretch out. Pippi Beach is another must-visit thanks to its pools built into the rocks, and Convent Beach is a tucked-away treasure.

Next time you’re looking at weekend road trips from Sydney , consider making Yamba your new favourite go-to beachside destination.

7 towns to visit on a day trip from Yamba to Coffs Harbour

Melissa Mason

Travel Journalist

17 February 2023

Time

The stretch from Yamba to Coffs Harbour might be short (just under 1.5 hours), but there are some great little stop-offs worth considering if you’re making a day of it.

Most people drive from Yamba to Coffs Harbour in one stretch – but because it’s such a short route, it’s easy to miss all the quaint country towns and potential beach detours on offer. If you’ve got the time, meander through the countryside and enjoy the trip slowly. We’ve covered all our favourite places to visit between Yamba and Coffs Harbour below.

Views down Coldstream Street to Yamba's town centre.

Drag yourself away from Yamba for a day exploring the towns en route to Coffs Harbour. (Image: Destination NSW)

Yamba to Maclean: 23 minutes

Your first stop outside of Yamba should be in the country town of Maclean. Well, Maclean and Townsend, since they’re right next to each other.

Woman taking photos of the sun setting over the Clarence River, Maclean

You’ll find Sanctus Brewery in Townsend if craft beer is up your alley, including experimental picks like pineapple coconut sour.

Pizza at Sanctus Brewery in Townsend

Depending on the time of day, Sanctus Brewery in Townsend is an excellent lunch stop. (Image: Destination NSW)

If you’re up early and in need of a coffee, Botero Roastery and Cafe is where the locals go – you’ve probably noticed their beans in Yamba’s best cafes.

People enjoying food and drink at Botero Cafe, Maclean

Maclean to Ulmarra: 24 minutes

After Tyndale, follow signs to Grafton and take a detour to Ulmarra, a picturesque riverside town steeped in history, that also has the perfect pub for a lunch break.

Pass through the cane fields on the outskirts of Maclean on your way to Ulmarra. (Image: Destination NSW)

The Ulmarra Hotel has been around since the late 1800s, and while from the front it might just look like just another quaint historic pub , head through to the back garden and you’ll find the perfect riverside oasis to enjoy as you chow down on pub fare like Cooper’s beer battered fish and chips, rump steak and an extensive list of classic Aussie burgers. The garden is also pet friendly if you’ve brought your dog along.

3. Minnie Water

Ulmarra to Minnie Water: 37 minutes

It doesn’t get any more retro than Minnie Water for a Yamba to Coffs Harbour road trip. Yes, it’s off the main route, but only by about thirty minutes. After driving back to the highway from Ulmarra, you’ll pass through Tucabia (there’s a cute antique store here if you’ve got time).

Then, head to the coast and enjoy one of the oldest fishing towns in NSW, with its lengthy beach and calm surroundings. In the summer there is surf lifesaving set up in the north area, or if you prefer your swims a little more relaxed, head to Minnie Lagoon, which is just down from the Tree Of Knowledge lookout.

4. Corindi Beach

Minnie Water to Corindi Beach: 50 minutes

Snorkellers will love Corindi Beach, which sits at the very north of Coffs Harbour. It has a huge reserve filled with walking trails and picnic areas, so settle in for a little while and enjoy the late afternoon here. If you’re done with swimming and surfing for the day, head to the Yarrawarra Aboriginal Centre , a gallery and museum that celebrates the Gumbaynggirr people, and also has a cafe that specialises in bush tucker.

5. Woolgoolga

Corindi Beach to Woolgoolga: 11 minutes

Woolgoolga is another of those coastal NSW towns that were once a sleepy hamlet for fishermen and are now a thriving tourism hub. It maintains its charm, but you’ll find plenty to do, from swims at the beach (some of the best whale watching in the region can be found here) to a damn fine craft brewery, the Woolgoolga Brewing Co. , which is worth spending a few hours at so you can enjoy the spacious lawns and plethora of brews on tap.

Woolgoolga beach, Coffs Coast

Woolgoolga Beach is a beautiful spot for a swim or a walk along the shore. (Image: Destination NSW)

You can bring your dog, too – the brewery is pet friendly. If you’re going to be up north in September, try and time your visit to Woolgoolga to coincide with Curryfest – a celebration of local Punjabi heritage in the region , it features over 100 stalls serving up curries (what else?) alongside other multicultural dishes, plus entertainment and traditional dance.

6. Emerald Beach

Woolgoolga to Emerald Beach: 10 minutes

A stone’s throw from Woolgoolga is where you’ll find Emerald Beach, a local surfer’s haven and a great area for fishing and swimming, too. It’s a great place to stop if you’re travelling with kids, thanks to easy conditions in the surf and a playground for when they’re bored of swimming.

Emerald Beach Coffs Coast

Emerald Beach boasts some pretty special lookout spots. (Image: Destination NSW)

North of Fiddamans Creek there is a dog-friendly beach area (as long as your pup stays on a lead), and plenty of cafes around if you’re keen for some downtime or a bite to eat – try Surf Street Cafe or Emerald Beach General Store , known for their great coffee.

7. Coffs Harbour

Emerald Beach to Coffs Harbour: 17 minutes

You’ve made it to Coffs Harbour – if you’re still looking for accommodation, check out our guide to budget options in the area, or our tips on where to go camping in Coffs Harbour if that’s more your style. 5 Must-Visit Day Trips From Halifax, Nova Scotia

There’s so more to Nova Scotia than its capital city.

The Bluenose II arrives to its home port of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Built by Smith and Rhuland it was constructed to match the same plans as the original Bluenose. Angus J. Walters, captain of the first Bluenose served as a consultant on the project. In 1971 the Bluenose II became Nova Scotia's sailing ambassador.

There’s a lot to see and do in Halifax—it’s the largest city east of Montreal, and while it’s much smaller than its contemporaries in the rest of Canada, there are still endless attractions and restaurants to explore in the capital of Nova Scotia.

That said—if you’re visiting Halifax, it’s worth it to explore outside of the city as well. Nova Scotia is arguably one of the most beautiful provinces in the country and a lot of the more nature-focused or quintessentially Atlantic Canadian culture is found outside of the city limits.

The following destinations are easily accessible by car and some can even be reached by bus if you’re feeling adventurous. Here, five must-visit day trips from Halifax that’ll give you a greater understanding of everything Nova Scotia has to offer.

Peggy’s Cove

Peggy's Cove Lighthouse under blue summer sky. Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada. Day and Night Series.

The first thing most travelers think of when conjuring up images of Nova Scotia is Peggy’s Cove . The infamous lighthouse and quaint fishing village is a must-visit when visiting Halifax but most visitors don’t realize the attraction is actually about an hour outside of the downtown core. It’s an easy half-day trip but you’ll want to consider sticking around the area and indulging in local fare at a seafood shack like Tom's Lobster Shack.

The beautiful and historic town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in the fall. Boats drift in the harbour and the amazing colours of the buildings in this picturesque seaside town add to the scene. This image was taken across the harbour from town on a gorgeous fall morning. Lunenburg is located approximately an hour from Halifax.

Lunenburg is another one of those quintessentially Nova Scotian spots to visit when visiting. It’s about an hour outside of the city (and is accessible with hired bus if you’re not interested in renting a car). The port town dates back to 1753 and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, UNESCO considers it the best example of a British colonial settlement in North America. It’s also the home of the Bluenose—the most famous sailboat in Canadian history.

Wonderful vinyards, field of lush green grapevines, Nova Scotia, Canada

Wolfville in the Annapolis Valley has always been a popular option for daytrippers coming from Halifax—but these days it has become even more culturally significant thanks to the rise in Nova Scotian wine. It’s only about 90 minutes from Halifax and is home to almost all of the most popular and legacy vineyards in the province (be sure to have a glass of Tidal Bay wine while you’re there!).

Bay of Fundy

Image of the flowerpot at Burntcoat Head an hour after high tide. The water level changes at a speed of around 2 inches per minute. The highest tides of the world are recorded here, at Burntcoat Head with an average of 55.8 feet. The highest tide was during the tropical cyclone Saxby Gale in 1969 at 70.9 feet.

Did you know that Nova Scotia has the highest reported tides in the world? It’s true—and you can experience it on an afternoon trip to Burntcoat Head Park in the Bay of Fundy. Check the tide schedule before heading out to walk the ocean floor—and be sure to stick around the park when the tide comes in so you can witness the unbelievable difference in water levels within a few short hours’ time.

Martinique Beach

Martinique Beach, Canada: Two surfers stroll down the long curving crescent of Martinique Beach on a hot July afternoon.

Martinique Beach is the longest sandy beach in Nova Scotia at an uninterrupted five kilometres of coastline. It’s about an hour from the downtown core and is well-worth visiting any time of year. In summer and early fall, you can watch the abundance of surfers and surf students catching waves. The winter months are quite a bit more chilly but can be a very peaceful spot to beach comb and enjoy the soothing waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
