The Guides were brilliant. It is about a 1.5-2 hour drive from Reykjavik to their base camp. We were assisted into our Snowsuits, balaclavas, helmets & snow boots . Our safety was always their top priority & making sure it was fun for us. The Guides gave us information about what we would see on the Glacier, they made sure we were comfortable handling the Snowmobiles & making sure everyone had their photos taken. There was Hot chocolate & biscuits waiting for us back at base camp once we returned!!! Wonderful. My Sisters & I had a fabulous time

Wake Up Reykjavik Tour Review by SaraM88

This was an extraordinary adventure. It started out well when our driver, Hans, was friendly, knowledgeable and super accommodating and then the day got better and better! The team were experts at building our expectations step by step - the switch from a van to a super truck, the moment we headed off-road into the highlands, kitting out into our very flattering (!) snowsuits, the safety briefing, the drive up to the snowmobiles and finally the instructions and then whoosh... we were off. There really isn't an adjective good enough to describe speeding across a glacier on a snowmobile. Hans challenged us to try without smiling - impossible! We were warm, it felt safe but exhilarating and more fun than I can describe... I should add that we had perfect weather and conditions and that certainly added to the joy.

Wake Up Reykjavik Tour Review by Paul O

I would add this to a must do list when in Iceland. I booked several tours and all were great, they had great communication, prompt pickups, wifi on all vehicles and great staff overall. The snowmobile experience included a visit to a small ice cave which was pretty unique. The guides assist you in an manner necessary and make sure all age groups are cared for. It’s a good distance from Reykjavík so be prepared with snacks and such. I would recommend Wake Up Reykjavik for any of your planned excursions, overall had a great experience with all the tours I booked through them!

Golden Circle & Snowmobiling

Availability.

With pick-up in Reykjavik

This Gullfoss, Geysir & Langjökull Snowmobiling tour combines the widely popular Golden Circle tour with the adventure of a lifetime – a one-hour snowmobile ride on Langjökull glacier, Iceland´s second largest glacier. We begin with a Reykjavik pick up at you desired location and from there we head out of Reykjavik and into the countrysides of Iceland. This tour is operated in cooperation with Reykjavik Excursions.

What's Included

  • Bus fare Guided tour
  • Professional local guidance
  • Admission to the sights
  • Protective clothing and safety equipment for the snowmobile ride
  • 1 hour guided snowmobile tour (2 persons per vehicle)

What to bring

  • Bring a waterproof jacket and pants, headwear and gloves. Good outdoor shoes are recommended.

First, we stop at Þingvellir National Park which is known for its exceptional beauty and historical importance. Þingvellir is as well a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is a historic site and national park in Iceland, east of Reykjavík. It’s known for the Alþing (Althing), the site of Iceland’s parliament from the 10th to 18th centuries. On the site are the Þingvellir Church and the ruins of old stone shelters. The park sits in a rift valley caused by the separation of 2 tectonic plates, with rocky cliffs and fissures like the huge Almannagjá fault. A fun fact for the Game of Thrones fans out there, Iceland is best known as the land beyond The Wall, but the pass to the impregnable Eyrie is actually found in Thingvellir National Park. Those who would approach the Eyrie must pass through a narrow path in a single file, making them very vulnerable to archers. Experience the path as you walk about the incredible rock formations of Thingvellir.

THE GREAT GEYSIR

Our second stop is at the high-temperature geothermal area known as Geysir, with its numerous spouting hot springs. Geysir, sometimes known as The Great Geysir, is a geyser in southwestern Iceland. It was the first geyser described in a printed source and the first known to modern Europeans. The English word geyser derives from Geysir. The Geysir geothermal area boasts spouting springs, including Strokkur, the most active geyser in Iceland.

LANGJÖKULL SNOWCAP

From there we drive to Langjökull where we take a one-hour exhilarating snowmobile tour on the vast white snowcap.

Langjökull is the second largest ice cap in Iceland, after Vatnajökull. It is situated in the west of the Icelandic interior or Highlands of Iceland and can be seen clearly from Haukadalur. Mountaineers of Iceland is one of the oldest activity providers and the most experienced snowmobile operator in Iceland. Operating super jeep, monster truck and glacier snowmobile tours on Langjokull glacier.

GULLFOSS WATERFALL

On our way back to Reykjavík we stop by the stunning Gullfoss waterfall. At Gullfoss you are given the opportunity to stand next to the amazing waterfall, watching enormous quantities of water tumble violently into a deep, meandering gorge. Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall) is an iconic waterfall of Iceland offering a spectacular view of the forces and beauty of untouched nature. Located in South Iceland on the Hvítá (White) river which is fed by Iceland´s second biggest glacier, the Langjökull. The water plummets down 32 meters in two stages into a rugged canyon which walls reach up to 70 meters in height. On a sunny day, a shimmering rainbow can be seen over the falls.

After an incredible day of activities, we head back to Reykjavik so you can start uploading your memories to social media and will probably have one of the best night sleep of your life.

Iceland Snowmobile Tour Reviews

1. golden circle & glacier snowmobiling day trip from reykjavik.

  • Duration: 10 hours
  • Departure:  Reykjavik BSI Bus Terminal 101 Reykjavík
  • Departure Time: 9 am
  • Includes:  Transportation by coach, guide, protective clothing and safety equipment, safety briefing

The Golden Circle & Glacier Snowmobiling Day Trip from Reykjavik is an absolute blast! This 10-hour tour is a full day excursion, so make sure you’ve packed along a sense of adventure! On this tour, you’ll get to see 3 of the country’s most popular attractions!

This tour does not include a hotel pickup, so you will meet your guides at the BSI Bus Terminal. This terminal is very safe and clean, so it’s pretty easy to meet.

Here, you’ll hop aboard a climate-controlled, comfortable vehicle which will start off by heading to the Thingvellir National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage site is always a spectacular experience, and part of the “ Golden Circle “.

You’ll take some time to explore the area in the vehicle, making periodic stops to take photos and videos and simply take in the particularly striking areas of the park. All the while, your guides will offer an informative commentary on the history of the area, which dates back to an impressive 93 AD!

Next up, head over to the Geysir Geyser, where you’ll watch from a safe distance as jets of water shoot from the very core of the earth! Next, head over to Langjökull glacier, which clocks in as the second-largest glacier in the country, at 361 square miles.

Here, is where your snowmobiling adventure begins. Before getting on, you’ll be given a safety briefing from your guide to ensure you know exactly what you’re doing and feel confident.

After the briefing, you’ll put on all protective gear and there will be 2 people on each snowmobile. This is great in terms of safety, especially if it’s your first time and you’re feeling nervous. Not only that, but it allows for smaller groups so you can explore more.

Once you get to the summit, you’ll have some time to check out the beautiful panoramas and take a rest. Then, you’ll return back to the snowmobiles and stop at Gullfoss Waterfall, which comes from a glacial lake!

  • Includes:  All activities, professional guide, on board free WiFi & USB chargers

Next up, is the Ice Cave and Snowmobile Tour of Langjökull Glacier from Reykjavik . This tour is a total of 10 hours long, which includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Reykjavik. This makes a huge difference as you don’t have to worry about finding the meet-up spot or booking your own transportation.

After you’re picked up in your comfortable bus first-thing in the morning at your hotel, you’ll head toward Húsafell. During the journey, you can choose to listen to the onboard audio guide, which is available in 10 different languages. You can simply choose to relax and enjoy the view, too.

Once you arrive at Jaki, you’ll put on the thermal suits the tour provides for you. Then, you’ll put on your required safety equipment, and receive a thorough safety briefing where you’ll learn just how to drive the snowmobiles.

Zoom across the west side of Langjökull, where you’ll have plenty of room to gain some speed and really have fun over the snow! This glacier is known for its fascinating ice caves, and you’ll also get to go inside them!

The silky blue glacier ice looks almost unreal. You’ll get the chance to see them up close and personal while listening to how the chambers were made by geophysicists and engineers, as well as how the glacier itself was formed over the years.

After adventuring, you’re sure to work up an appetite, so take a break for lunch! After lunch you will then head to the hot springs where you can take a dip!

3. Golden Circle Super-Jeep Tour and Snowmobiling

Get bundled up and ready for fun on our next tour! The Golden Circle Super-Jeep Tour and Snowmobiling is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to see Iceland’s nature in a more intimate way.

This tour lasts 9-10 hours, depending on how far away your hotel is and traffic, however pickup and drop-off is included. Once you get all cozy and settled into the climate-controlled vehicle, you’ll head out with your professional guides to the Thingvellir National Park.

Here, you’ll get to see all that this UNESCO heritage site has to offer. One of our favorite parts was seeing the world’s oldest existing parliament building, which existed from the 10 th to 18 th centuries.

The massive cliffs and valleys are equally as impressive, placing Iceland’s dramatic geological processes on display. Stop at The Great Geysir, for a show of hot water jetting out from the molten core of our Earth!

As you can imagine, it’s very impressive and perfect for photo ops. Your guides will let you take them to your content, ensuring everyone stays at a safe distance.

Next, head over to Langjokull Glacier, which is absolutely massive and perfect for taking the snowmobiles out for a ride. Here, you’ll get to ride all over the place due to the vast amount of open land.

4. Golden Circle Super Jeep adventure with snowmobiling

  • Duration: 9 hours

This is one of those tours that few will get to experience, as you’ll be taking a robust Jeep into the wild. This Jeep is specially-designed to be able to withstand these frigid conditions, and drive over the ice and snow like nothing.

Not to mention, the drivers are very experienced so you can feel confident that you’re in good hands. After checking out this natural beauty, you’ll make your way to the Langjokull glacier. The road here is a bit intense (but entertaining), so make sure you hold on tight! The 2 nd -largest glacier in Iceland offers a ton of open space for you to drive around for an hour on a snowmobile.

5. Snowmobiling on Langjökull Glacier and Bathing in the Secret Lagoon

  • Departure:  Pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time:  9 am
  • Includes:  Hotel pickup and drop-off, professional snowmobiling guide, use of helmet, warm overalls, hat and gloves, towel at the Secret Lagoon

One of the things that make Iceland so unique is the fact that its land and waters are so naturally rich in minerals. In this tour, you’ll get to not only take a dip in the mineral-rich lagoons, but venture around some of Iceland’s top sites.

If you’re looking for a good balance of relaxation and excitement, then check out the Snowmobiling on Langjokull Glacier and Bathing in the Secret Lagoon tour!

This 10-hour excursion starts with an early-morning pickup from your hotel. Make sure to pack along a swimsuit as you will be getting wet! There’ll be no mistake about which vehicle is yours, as you board the super truck!

Along the way to your first destination the guides will give an educational history of the area as well as interesting personal anecdotes. You’ll get to see the Geysir hot springs, which is a kind of ethereal, untouched location with mud pools and water spouts!

Once you arrive to Langjokull, you’ll put on thermal coveralls, hat, gloves, and helmet that are all provided on the tour!

Once you’re all warm, you’ll hop on the 2-person snowmobile. Wait until after the instructors give you a thorough briefing on how to use the vehicle, then you’re off! Follow your guide across all kinds of breathtaking landscapes, while admiring the stunning views.

Around the halfway point, your group will all take a break, allowing for photo ops and simply a bit of a breather. Afterward, you’ll head over to the truck and over to one of the area’s most popular restaurants for some traditional Icelandic food.

6. Snowmobiling on Eyjafjallajökull Glacier

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Departure: Gljúfrabúi, Road 249,
  • Departure Time:  Varies (either 10 am or 2 pm)
  • Includes:  Local guide

While all the tours we’ve covered so far are absolutely incredible and worth the full-day experience, some people are looking for more compact tours. These tours are easier to fit into a tight schedule, and give you a taste of the Icelandic outdoors without committing to an entire day.

That’s exactly what you have here, with the Snowmobiling on Eyjafjallajokull tour! With this 2-hour tour, you also have a bit more flexibility as you can choose from starting at either 10am or 2pm. However, there is not a hotel pickup and drop-off included in this one as it is shorter.

You’ll meet at the base right next to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. Before you head over there, make sure you’re prepared for the cold weather. You’ll need warm, waterproof clothing, a hat, gloves, and hiking boots or shoes that can keep you upright on slippery ice and snow.

They do provide warm suits and helmets, however! You’ll meet up with your guides, where they’ll give you a guided tour that lets you explore the wilderness at your own pace.

This tour is perfect for beginners and advanced riders, alike. The guides make sure you receive a thorough safety briefing and instructions on how to maneuver the vehicles beforehand. When the weather is clear, you’ll get to take in stunning panoramas over the Westman Islands and the south coast.

During the tour, your guide will tell you all kinds of interesting facts about the snowmobiles, the volcanos, Iceland, and its history! One of the best parts of the tour is when you head up to the top of a volcano that erupted in 2010!

7. Golden Circle Super Jeep Tour and Snowmobiling

  • Includes:  Professional guide, Super Jeep tour, 1-hour snowmobile tour, gear for snowmobiling

Following that one up is the Golden Circle Super Jeep Tour and Snowmobiling , which is another lengthier one at 10 hours. However, they will pick you up at your hotel in Reykjavik, and also offer drop-off services!

That way, you don’t have to deal with figuring out transportation and can spend all of your time actually venturing around this beautiful country.

Often referred to as the “Land of Ice and Fire”, you’ll be able to see all kinds of natural wonders, such as shooting geysers, rugged volcanic terrain, glaciers, and more! You’ll start off at the country’s most popular sightseeing route: Golden Circle.

This is a convenient way to see 3 of Iceland’s top attractions, covering a 186-mile loop which starts and ends in Reykjavik.

After a pleasant drive in a comfy vehicle, you’ll make a stop at Thingveller National Park, which is a UNESCO site that holds countless historical stories and important attractions – both natural and manmade.

You will make a stop at Langjokull Glacier, like a few of our other tours, where you’ll get to speed across ice and snow on a premiere snowmobile!

Before hopping on, you’ll receive detailed instructions from your guides on how to ride it and how to stay safe. Next, you’ll head over to Gullfoss Waterfall and the Geysir Hot Springs. Both of these are natural attractions that are fascinating to learn about but also visually impressive and great for taking photos.

With short travel periods in-between, you’ll love this tour and how much it packs in to one day!

Riding a snowmobile can be intimidating at first but it’s easy to get the hang of.

Most snowmobiles have handlebars that control the throttle and brakes. Make sure you know which control does what before you start riding.
  • Start slow : When you first start riding, take it slow and get a feel for the snowmobile. Start with gentle turns and gradual acceleration and gradually build up your speed as you get more comfortable.
  • Use your body weight : Snowmobiles are like motorcycles, they responsive to shifting body weight, so use your body to control the sled. Lean into turns to maintain balance and use your body weight to help steer the snowmobile when needed.
  • Watch your speed : Snowmobiles are fast but it’s important ride at a speed that you are comfortable with. Keep an eye out for hazards like rocks, trees and other snowmobiles and always ride at a safe speed for the conditions.

  • Have fun : Finally, remember that snowmobiling is all about having fun and experiencing the thrill of adventure. Embrace the rush of adrenaline, take in the stunning scenery and enjoy the ride!

A guide to snowmobiling in iceland.

Iceland’s immense natural beauty and wintry wilderness are unparalleled and absolutely magical. It is the ultimate travel destination for   adventurous souls ! These captivating landscapes along with the rugged and varied terrains offer unlimited options for   exciting outdoor activities .

Snowmobiling is the best way to connect with Iceland's innermost arctic soul. Gliding through the   endless snowfields   with a roaring engine between your legs could easily be one of the   most amazing adventures   you have ever had!

Why is Iceland the Best Place to Go Snowmobiling?

Iceland is among the very few places in the world where you can experience the thrill of   snowmobiling on the surface of a glacier . Moreover, you can do this   on top of active volcanoes , as most of them are covered by glacial ice. Imagine the feeling of speeding over a glacial   ice sheet that is hundreds of meters thick   hiding a rumbling   volcano beneath   its surface! This is something you can   only experience in Iceland !

Thanks to the abundance of glaciers,   snowmobiling is available year-round in Iceland . It is equally awesome during summer and winter. What adds even more to the fun is that the most popular snowmobiling area on Iceland’s second-largest glacier, Lagjökull, is located a mere   two-hour drive from the capital .

Moreover, it also lies close to the most beloved tourist attractions. This ultimate snowmobile base camp is found a half an hour from the   majestic Gullfoss Waterfall , the superstar of the famous   Golden Circle Route .

What is a Snowmobile?

This may not be so obvious for everyone. If you are from a country that rarely has snow and does not have snow-capped mountains, you may have never heard of these vehicles.

Snowmobiles - also known as motor sleds, motor sledges, or snow machines - are defined as   all-terrain vehicles   (ATVs). They are specially   designed for traveling on ice and snow . Instead of wheels, they have rubber tracks and are steered with skis. The machines are powered by four-stroke engines and can reach up to 150 km/h (93 mph). The normal - and safe - maximum speed on to reach on a glacier is 70 km/h (43 mph). Believe us, that is more than enough.

Riding a snowmobile feels similar to riding a quad bike (four-wheeler) or motorcycle on snow, but is even more fun! It is no wonder why people who live in snowy areas are so obsessed with these beautiful beasts. Snowmobiling is an   amazingly popular hobby   and recreational sport in northern countries!

The Snowmobile Culture of Iceland

Iceland is one of the many countries where snowmobiles are an important part of people's lives. We have long winters, wide frozen plateaus, and a great number of glaciers that cover an amazing 11 percent of the total land area.

Many locals own snowmobiles   and use them for recreational purposes. They even have their own slang! Snowmobilers call each other   sledheads   and refer to their vehicles as   snow scooters , while snowmobiling is often shortened to ‘ biling . When winter comes, these crazy sledders bite their nails while they wait for the snow to be deep enough for a ride!

Snowmobiles also play a   major role in the work of the search and rescue teams . Iceland has more than a hundred rescue teams all over the country with thousands of volunteers. The ground units own a number of snowmobiles that   save many lives   and help to resolve innumerable dangerous situations.

Which Snowmobile Tour is right for me?

With its year-round snowy slopes and expansive wildlands, Iceland is an ideal destination for adrenaline hunters. For the ultimate thrill, hop on a snowmobile atop some of the biggest glaciers in Europe! Zooming along at lightning speed in a sea of smooth-white snow is an unforgettable experience. There’s nowhere better to appreciate Iceland’s uninterrupted natural beauty and stillness than from the top of our Arctic snowmobiles, which can reach speeds of up to 70km per hour.

Our snowmobile guides are some of the most qualified adventurers in the country with years of experience leading groups on the slopes. Each of our tours is handcrafted to ensure that our guests stay safe and informed while having loads of fun! Whether you’re a real pro or a newbie testing out your metaphorical snow legs, we’ve got your back. The best part is that you don’t need to have any experience whatsoever to enjoy yourself on our snowmobiling trips. So don your gear and let’s hit the slopes!

Snowmobiles in a row

First, pick your glacier

Vatnajokull is the largest glacier in Europe, covering about 8% of Iceland’s entire landmass! With 8,100 sq km (3,127 sq mi) and over 30 smaller outlet glaciers, that’s a large playground! As the main landmark of Vatnajökull National Park, the wild landscapes of towering mountains and snow-smothered plains are an unparalleled experience.

In the park, you can also hike on a glacier, check out the glacier lagoon, investigate an ice cave, or trek out on hiking paths. Vatnajökull also harbors the highest peak in Iceland, Hvannadalshnúkur . It stands 2,110 m (7,000 ft) tall. Because of its distance from Reykjavik (approx. 260 km), we ask that you meet us on location in Vatnajokull National Park.

Snowmobile on Vatnajokull

Langjokull. At a massive 953 sq km (368 sq mi) length and 500 meters height at some points, Langjokull is Iceland’s second largest glacier and the base for most of our snowmobile tours.

We recommend combining your ride with a magical visit to an ice cave within the glacier. Witness the majesty of sparkling blue ice up close and capture some breathtaking photos. Take note, the ice cave part of the tour is only available from November until June.

Our Langjokull tours are from Reykjavik, Gullfoss, or the Langjokull basecamp. Situated in West Iceland, they’re easily combinable with a Golden Circle tour to Thingvellir National Park and beyond.

Eyjafjallajokull. After earning world recognition in 2010 following its massive eruption, Eyjafjallajokull became a hotspot for adventure seekers. This gigantic ice cap is perfect for rides across glacier tongues in breathtaking natural beauty.

As soon as we approach the glacier, you’ll be struck by its magnitude--a pristine stretch of snow dotted with rock formations and ice sculptures. As we push deeper into the icy wilderness, be prepared for some incredible views of South Iceland’s lowlands and the deep-blue Atlantic Ocean.

How much time do you have?

The average snowmobile tour takes anywhere from 2-5 hours, depending on whether we pick you up in Reykjavik or you’re able to meet us at the base camp. If you're combining it with one of our other fantastic attractions, we offer tours that range from 4 hours to a jam-packed 16-hour thrill ride.

Why Iceland is Perfect for Snowmobile Trips

Orange snowmobiles stand in a row

When is the Best Season for a Snowmobile Tour

Our snowmobile tours operate all year round. In the summer, temperatures are milder and days are longer, especially in June when the midnight sun gives us more time to explore. In the winter, you can combine a snowmobile afternoon with a hunt for the Northern Lights. There’s nothing quite like admiring the dancing colors of the Northern Lights above the vast emptiness of a winter wonderland. Find some more winter tours for your Arctic adventures here .

What to Expect on a Snowmobiling Tour

There are two different ways to get to Langjökull and Vatnajökull base camps. We can pick you up from Reykjavik, or you can meet up on location at the Gullfoss Cafe, behind the Gullfoss Waterfall, or at the basecamp itself.

For most tours, we’ll drive a minibus. To get to Langjökull basecamp, we’ll need to hop aboard a massive Super Jeep. Our Super Jeeps have been outfitted with tough engines and huge 4x4 wheels to access the highlands in West Iceland.

Once we arrive at our glacier basecamp, you’ll be outfitted with all the necessary gear and a top-notch vehicle. Your guide will run you through the safety instructions.

While guests of all levels of experience are welcome, we just ask that you have a valid driver’s license and are over 18 years old. Remember to stay alert, sober, and be responsible for your own actions. When riding on the slopes, follow the rules given to you before departure. They exist to keep everyone safe and having fun. The most important rule to remember is to drive behind your guide in a single line.

At last, it’s time for your awesome snowmobile ride! We’ll ride out for an hour tour on the middle of the glacier, on pure and untouched slopes. As snowmobiles in Iceland can go up to 70km per hour--more powerful than most standard issues--drive with caution. Don’t pull the throttle too hard or you’ll end up running aground in a snowfield.

It’s an exhilarating experience like no other--and yes, it can be a bit daunting if you’re not used to it, but don’t worry. Our guides will take care of you and give you all the required gear to instill the confidence to master the glacier.

After an hour driving through the white slopes, we’ll return to basecamp and heat up with some tasty hot drinks and cookies. Once we’ve rested a bit, we’ll climb aboard the Super Jeep and head back to the starting point.

Safety Precautions

At the basecamp, we’ll provide all the safety equipment: overall suits, gloves, helmets, and glasses. Overalls are usually polyester onesies.

Dress warmly, in comfortable but flexible layers, and be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes. If you’ve forgotten your hiking boots at home, we can provide overshoes.

We highly recommend that you use our special snowmobile gloves even if you’ve brought your own. All of our snowmobiles have an interior heating system for the handles so your hands aren’t at any risk of freezing.

Don’t forget your lunch and your camera! Just be aware to only take photos when off your snowmobile.

All of our snowmobiling tours are available for everyone above 8 years old. Children can be passengers while only adults over 18 years old with a valid driving license are allowed to drive.

Still got questions about snowmobiling? Find the answer here!

Is snowmobiling tour optional all year around?

Yes, Iceland is a cold country so our glaciers are here all year around and we can go snowmobiling in every season.

Do you have weight restrictions for the snowmobiling tours?

We do not have weight restriction but participants need to be able to fit in our winter overalls. The largest size we have is 5XL. Your adventurous day starts when we pick you up at the arranged place and time. Depending on your booking option, we will pick you up in Reykjavik or Skjól Campground, located not so far away from the famous Gullfoss Waterfall. Then we'll head up to Langjökull Glacier, Iceland's second largest glacier, in the Icelandic Highlands in our Super Truck. On a clear day, the views are incredible. You will be able to see Eiríksjökull Glacier (the highest mountain in west Iceland), Hofsjökull Glacier, and the Kerlingafjöll Mountains.

Snowmobiling & Ice cave

A certified glacier guide will provide all the necessary snowmobiling equipment, including overalls and a helmet. After that, your guide will give you a safety briefing and basic straightforward snowmobile driving instructions. The amazing thing about snowmobiling is that no prior experience is required! After a short briefing, you are ready to ride - driving a snowmobile is easy, but feel free to ask any questions before you roar off.

Your stunning 1-hour  snowmobile ride  will take you across Langjökull Glacier, the second largest glacier in Iceland, rising to 1450 m above sea level. Feel your excitement and adrenaline soar! Your snowmobile tour on Langjökull will feel like a magic carpet chase across the roof of majestic white land. Glaciers are predominately white, but Langjökull, known as 'The White Glacier,' is incredibly white. Make the most of the journey but feel your spine tingle in anticipation as you approach the  natural ice cave  – we promise you will not be disappointed.

reykjavik snowmobile tours

As winter covers the ground, our glacier guides begin their exciting search for the new ice caves in Langjökull Glacier. All ice caves are exceptional, but some are more special than others! This year the Langjökull Ice Cave is an absolute stunner – we can promise you that this is the best ice cave yet. Since Langjokull is nicknamed 'The White Glacier,' its ice cave displays the most amazing bright jewel blue ice imaginable. The ice is so exceptionally translucent that it seems as though pure blue-hued quartz crystal jewels surround you. The ice around this 'blue river' is white, bearing very unusual subtle gray 'zebra striping,' formed from the ash layers of various volcanic eruptions. You get about 15 minutes to explore and photograph the cave and enjoy the rare and precious crystalline blue beauty of this amazing natural ice cavern.

Outside the cave, your trusty snowmobile is waiting, ready to skim you across Langjökull to our Snowmobile Base Camp. After a one-hour tour, we will drop you back at Skjól Campground.

The Glacier Snowmobiling and Ice Cave tour from Skjól Campground is a great way to experience the best that Icelandic glaciers can offer.

Please note

Two people ride each snowmobile. If you are on your own or wish to ride solo, you need to book this and pay for an upgrade. All snowmobile drivers need to bring a valid Driving License.

The price of the tour is for one person when sharing a two-person snowmobile. Please choose the solo ride option when booking in odd numbers. Also, if you want to ride alone on the snowmobile, select the “solo on a snowmobile” option.

You must book a solo snowmobile for 6.500 ISK extra for a solo or an odd number of bookings.

If you wish to have a solo snowmobile but do not have a valid driver's license, then you can book an extra guide to operate your snowmobile for an additional 50.000 ISK. Don't hesitate to contact our sales desk for further information and booking.

What does meet on location entail?

Meet on location means travelling to the location of the tour yourself and then meeting our tour guides rather than being picked up and taken to the location.

How is it best to be ready for a pick-up for a tour with Arctic Adventures?

This is a great question. We ask all participants to be ready from the start of the pickup time indicated. This is because you may well be the first pick up of the day. Please be at your assigned location at the start time that you chose when booking the tour.

Here you should wait for your guide.

Have your email and phone number listed with us so we can contact you if we run into any trouble finding you.

View our pick-up locations in Reykjavík.

Can I drink alcohol before or during Arctic Adventures tours?

Before and during activities on the multi-day tours consumption of alcohol is prohibited. If we suspect that a participant is intoxicated, we will prohibit them from joining the activity.

After the activities of the day are finished, you are welcome to have a drink and relax.

Do you offer any family friendly tours, for younger children?

Yes, we do. Langjökull Ice Cave is a magical experience, the tour has no minimum age and is a wonderful option for the whole family. Whale Watching with our partner company Elding has been a favourite with families traveling with young children, these guys have a great success rate in seeing whales (upwards of 98% in the summertime).

Another option would be the Landmannalaugar Safari on this tour you get to explore parts of the Icelandic highlands and bathe in natural hot springs. Most of our super jeep tours  are also suitable for children over the age of 6 years old. If you would like a nice and relaxing experience we would also recommend the Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon tour .

Can the itinerary for the tour change?

Your safety is our number one priority! Keeping this in mind, Arctic Adventures reserves the right to adjust the itinerary and/or take different routes depending on conditions. Please read more information in our cancellation policy .

Is there a guide on each Arctic Adventures tour?

Yes, there is a specially trained and certified guide on each of our tours. The only exception to this is for our self-drive tours .

All of our tours are guided in English.

Can the guide advise if I am eligible for rescheduling the tour and/or a refund?

No, for all your questions and concerns you would need to contact our customer service.

What type of power outlets are used in Iceland? Do I need to bring an adapter?

The standard in Iceland is 230V and 50Hz and we use F-type power sockets and plugs, so you might have to bring an adaptor if you are visiting from UK, USA, Canada or other countries using a different voltage, Hz or plugs.

How are the tours rated in terms of difficulty?

Our tours are split into four different categories that help participants to understand what to expect from the tour. The categories are Easy, Moderate, Challenging and Demanding. Each tour is rated making it easier to find tours that suit you.

For further information about the difficulty ratings and descriptions.

How does carbon offsetting work?

We’ve partnered with the Kolviður Fund in a new carbon offsetting program, which passengers can select to participate in at the time of booking.

The Kolviður Fund is the oldest, most respected carbon offsetting program in Iceland. With your support, one tree will be planted in special Kolviður forests in Iceland to carbon offset your tour with us.

Kolviður forests are strategically planted to absorb the maximum amount of CO2 and the forests are protected for a minimum of 60 years. During their lifetime the trees absorb carbon and store it in their root system, trunk, and branches. Trees also prevent soil erosion and maintain storage of carbon in the soil.

Can I ride a snowmobile if I only have motorcycle license?

No, full drivers license is required to ride a snowmobile.

Snowmobiling and Ice Cave Tour on Langjökull Glacier

The journey will start from your scheduled pick-up time at either one of the pick-up spots in the capital city or the Gullfoss waterfall . You will have two options for pick-up location. You can choose either one depending on your location and preference. Here you can book the tour with a pick up in Reykjavik. You will be picked up in a minibus and drive with your guide to Gullfoss waterfall, where we will meet the rest of the group. From Gullfoss we will head on to the base camp at the foot of the glacier. Your ride up to the glacier will be a Super Jeep. As you get to the base camp, the staff and the guides at the base camp will help you put on the snowmobiling gear which will include overalls, glasses, overshoes, and gloves. The gear will be provided by the guides at the base. After that, you will start your snowmobiling tour as soon as the guides explain all the safety measurements and how to operate the vehicle safely. Feel free to jump in and clear any doubts that you may have at any point in time. The tour will last about an hour which means that you will get a complete hour to cruise around the long-stretched glacier.

The next stop on your tour will be exploring the freshly formed natural ice cave in the Langjökull glacier. You will get to your destination on your roaring snowmobile. You will be accompanied by an experienced tour guide who has already scooped the place once. The guide will help you get to the cave and explore the insides while dropping some interesting facts about the cave. After you have thoroughly explored the caves, you will come out to your snowmobiles which will take you back to the base camp. After you are out of your snowmobiling gear, you will be escorted to your drop off location in Reykjavik.

Note that you need to bring your driving license to drive the snowmobile. An international driving license is not required here. Just make sure that you have a national license in English or a valid English translation if it in any other language. The minimum age to ride on snowmobiles is 8 years, but note that children need to ride with adults.

Langjökull Glacier and Its Ice Caves

Also known as the ‘long glacier’ or ‘the white glacier’, Langjökull glacier is the second-largest glacier of the country. It is spread across an area of 953 km 2 , runs a 500-meter-thick ice sheet, and is at a height of 1450 meters above the sea level. The long-stretched body of this glacier makes it perfect for snowmobiling adventures. The glacier houses 2 volcanoes underneath which are dormant now. Langjökull glacier is located in the west of the Icelandic highlands which makes the journey to the glacier as exciting and thrilling as the snowmobiling itself.

The ice caves in Iceland melt and form every season. The ice caves of Langjökull glacier are often crystal ice caves that contain crystal blue ice predominantly. There are several other colors and patterns in the cave as well including some black and white zebra patterns. Since two volcanoes are resting underneath the thick sheet of ice of the glacier, the lava leaks into the ice and form these patterns in the cave. The colors and designs that you will find in these are always going to be something new that has never been seen before which will transcend you into heaven with natural wonders are all around you.

Langjökull, which translates as ´long glacier´, is one of Iceland´s biggest glaciers. The glacier is a popular destination for skiers, snowmobiling, ice cave tours and super-jeep excursions. When we reach our glacier base camp, we will outfit you with overalls and helmet in preparation for our adventure. Climb aboard your snowmobile and follow your guide up onto the glacier. The views from here on a clear day are something else and you enjoy around an hour overall exploring the glacier over the course of the tour.

The highlight of the tour is your visit to the amazing crystal blue ice cave. Strap on your crampons and enter through the narrow entrance into this magical otherworldly cave. You will have about 15 minutes to explore the cave and take photographs.

After our visit to the cave, we take our snowmobiles back to our basecamp, and then the bus onto Skjól once more. You will have ticked two great activities off the bucket list on this fantastic combo adventure tour.
