It’s breathtakingly beautiful here – a timeless Southern escape with Spanish and Mediterranean influences, arched doorways, grand staircases, rich wood accents, and beautiful courtyards filled with blooming flowers and trickling fountains!

  • The Beach Club! One of the biggest perks of staying at The Cloister is its close proximity to their pools and beach club. Just a short stroll away from your room, the Beach Club is Sea Island’s hub of activity with three pools, private beach access, and a range of dining options.

  • Elegant accommodations. The rooms and suites at The Cloister are super spacious and beautiful!! It features Mediterranean-inspired decor, linens that are oh-so-luxurious and complete with modern amenities. I’d highly recommend booking a room in their Garden Wing which has bright, spacious and picturesque rooms!
  • Great food!   The Cloister has amazing dining options. The Breakfast buffet at Tavola was INCREDIBLE, I am still dreaming about their waffles. And for dinner, Tavola is the spot, or head to the Georgian Rooms for a super upscale dining atmosphere (jackets required) or River Bar & Lounge for an all-american grill.
  • Top Notch Amenities . Guests at The Cloister can enjoy a variety of amenities including a world-class spa, tennis courts, and fitness facilities. You also get exclusive access to the Sea Island Golf Club, featuring three championship golf courses.
  • Spa and Wellness. The Cloister Spa provides a range of treatments and services designed to rejuvenate and relax guests.

  • Less expensive – The Lodge is generally less expensive than The Cloister  making it an attractive option for those looking to experience Sea Island’s luxury at a slightly lower price point.

The Cloister vs . The Lodge – What Are the Differences?

Choosing between The Cloister and The Lodge can be a delightful dilemma, as these are both amazing resorts in Sea Island. I get this question a lot from my followers and to answer that, here’s a rundown on the key differences to help you decide and take a closer look at what makes them different:

Location and Ambiance

The Cloister is located by the Black Banks River, and provides a tranquil, garden-like setting with easy access to the Beach Club and its sandy shores. It feels absolutely elegant and luxurious, perfect for jetsetters who are looking for a peaceful retreat.

The Lodge on the other hand, is located among the golf courses. It offers a more intimate and cozy environment. The focus here is on golf and the rustic charm of a classic Southern lodge-style which mostly appeals to couples or older folks.

Accommodation

The rooms and suites at The Cloister are designed with Mediterranean-inspired decor, featuring high ceilings, rich fabrics, and a bright atmosphere. But if you like a more traditional and cozy vibe, with wood-paneled walls, fireplaces, marble bathrooms and a warm, inviting ambiance, then the The Lodge is for you! Think old English manors with antique furnitures.

Amenities and Activities

The Cloister is more closer to the Beach Club, with multiple swimming pools, water sports, a world-class spa, and various dining options. I highly recommend this for families and those looking to enjoy the pool, beach activities and wellness. But if you love golfing, then without a doubt, The Lodge is for you! It provides direct access to three championship golf courses, a Golf Performance Center, a Shooting School and sooo many golf-related activities!!! Perfect for golf enthusiasts. Guests at The Lodge enjoy personalized butler service, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and a bagpiper serenade at sunset.

Dining Experience

When dining at The Cloister you have the Forbes Five-Star Georgian Room and other dining venues offering a diverse culinary experience. The Lodge features exquisite dining options with a focus on Southern cuisine, often with a more casual and relaxed atmosphere. It is also home to the renowned Oak Room and Colt & Alison restaurants, serving the best Southern dishes.

Price Point

In terms of price, The Cloister tends to be more expensive due to its extensive amenities, proximity to the beach, and variety of activities. The Lodge, on the other hand, is generally less expensive, but still offers a high-end experience (just at a slightly lower price point) making it a great value for golf lovers.

20 Best Things To Do At Sea Island Resort

This coastal Georgia haven is heaven on earth.

Where To Stay

Where to eat, for the kids.

Courtesy of Sea Island

The minute I arrived at Sea Island, I knew I was in for an experience unlike any other. Every smile that welcomed me was warm and sincere, and as I walked around the coastal Georgia property, I noticed an attention to detail that only exists when you really, really care about something. The people who work there are a true team, experts in both their individual crafts and the art of Southern hospitality. Since 1928, the resort has felt more like a home to generations of families, world leaders, and honeymooners alike. You’re taken care of there, and what’s more—you’re never, ever bored.

Sea Island, located between Savannah and Jacksonville, is like a playground with something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you prefer to lounge poolside, hit the links, or cast some lines, there’s a place for you. Part of the appeal that turns first-time visitors into regulars is that you can have a different experience each stay, create your own traditions, or a little bit of both. While there’s even more to discover once you arrive, consider this your guide to the very best things to do at Sea Island Resort .

The Cloister At Sea Island

Made up of 50 acres and 5 miles of private coastline, The Cloister is the heart of Sea Island. You’ll find the spa, the fitness center, the Beach Club, and most restaurants on the premises, as well as a lush landscape perfect for meandering around. Just don’t forget to attend bingo night—a lively tradition that feels more like a show than a game. Whether you stay in the main building, one of the wings, the Beach Club, or one of the ocean residences, you’ll find your accommodations just as charming as the property itself.

The Lodge At Sea Island

The closest thing to an English country estate you’ll find in the Golden Isles, The Lodge is the ideal homebase for golfers. Situated along two championship courses with an oceanfront pool and a pool house, you can book a room, a suite, or one of the seven private cottages. At sunset, bring your kids and a cocktail to the terrace and listen to the bagpiper who plays every evening. It’s located on St. Simons Island, which is adjacent to Sea Island, making it a hop, skip, and a jump away from the amenities and activities at The Cloister.

When you really want to get away from the hustle and bustle, look no further than Broadfield , Sea Island’s 5,800-acre sporting club and lodge. Between fishing, hunting, shooting, and falconry, you can take full advantage of the great outdoors. Though the property is expansive, occupancy is limited—between the lodge, master suite, guest house, guest cabin, and pool house, they can only accommodate 18 guests at a time (including their members). Book far in advance.

It’s not uncommon to spot a PGA Tour player training on one of Sea Island's three championship courses. The 17,000-square-foot Golf Performance Center is one of the resort’s crown jewels, offering access to world-renowned experts and state-of-the-art technology. If you have a chance to pop into the men’s locker room, say hello to Mighty Fine, the attendant and a Sea Island legend who’s been working there for over 60 years.

Horseback Riding

Beach, marsh, or wooded estate? Wherever you decide to ride, you’ll be mesmerized by the beauty of the Golden Isles. The Stables at Frederica also offers lessons to aspiring and training equestrians.

What would a coastal resort be without fishing? Fish inshore, nearshore, off the dock, or on the Gulf Stream, then bring your catches up to the River Bar & Lounge to be prepared by their chefs. If fishing isn’t your thing, join Captain Reid Williams for a leisurely cruise on the Sea Island Explorer, the resort’s 71-foot yacht.

Historical Tour

Wheeler Bryan, Jr., the resort’s resident historian, is the picture of Southern charm and will delight you with his detailed storytelling rooted in nostalgia and pride. While you can accompany him on guided tours to Savannah, Fernandina Beach, or nearby St. Simons Island, newcomers will be captivated by his golf cart tour that allows you to take in the beauty of Sea Island all at once.

Sea Turtle Dawn Patrol

In the summer, the Sea Island naturalists patrol the five-mile beach every morning at sunrise for sea turtle nests and hatchlings. You have the rare opportunity to join them in this conservation work, which is critical for loggerhead turtles in danger of becoming extinct.

Spa & Fitness Center

Massages, facials, baths, and more—when you need to unwind, you can’t do better than The Spa at Sea Island . Not only are the services top notch, but every inch of the 65,000-square-foot facility is exquisitely designed. The building is also home to a full-service salon and a fitness center offering everything from pilates and squash to cryotherapy and personal training.

Shooting School

One of the most unique activities available at Sea Island, Shooting School is exactly what it sounds like, offering lessons for adults and kids alike on archery, air rifle, skeet, trap, and 5-stand. Already an experienced shooter? Take advantage of the practice sessions available instead.

The Broadfield Experience

Guests staying at The Cloister can make their way to Broadfield, Sea Island’s sporting club and lodge, for a half-day complete with a tour of the grounds, dog training and falconry demonstrations, and even a 5-stand shooting lesson. Lunch is included, prepared by Chef Paula (better known as PK!) with fresh, local ingredients—many of which are grown on the property.

Colt & Alison

For meat and potato enthusiasts, Colt & Alison , located at The Lodge, is a must. Unlike most, this classic steakhouse is warm and welcoming, from the (recently updated) design to the friendly service. Do yourself a favor and order the crab maison with buttered brioche for your appetizer.

Homemade pasta and pizza is best enjoyed in a rustic and cozy setting, and that’s exactly what Tavola offers. At The Cloister, this is also where you’ll eat breakfast. There’s a lot to love on the à la carte menu, but the buffet is substantial and will more than satisfy any craving you have.

Georgian Rooms

Georgian Rooms may be one restaurant, but it provides three different dining options. Upscale American grill dishes are served in the main dining room and orangery, the former of which takes on a moody, Ralph Lauren-esque persona while the latter is lighter, brighter, and glass-enclosed. In the lounge, you’ll find Sea Island’s first-ever Asian cuisine—a curated menu of sushi and other Japanese fare.

Southern Tide

Southern seafood with an ocean view—does anything sound more luxurious? Southern Tide 's setup is chic yet approachable, decorated like your most stylish friend’s family beach house. The location used to be home to Big George’s, a beach bar named after the beloved “Big George” Drayton, who’s worked at Sea Island for more than 50 years (some of the fan favorite recipes carried over!).

Fun in the sun is guaranteed with 5 miles of private beach and three pools. Whether you spend the day playing pool games, learning how to sail, or going kayaking and shelling, the entire family will go to bed wiped out in the best way.

Sea Island’s very own version of Wonka’s factory, Wonderland is an irresistible candy shop-ice cream parlor duo located inside the Beach Club. If hardened chocolate and chopped pecans sound like just the thing to satisfy your cravings, order their famous Gold Brick Sundae.

Sea Strike & Pub

A far cry from your typical bowling alley, Sea Strike & Pub is more akin to an upscale sports bar. Kids will love the six lanes of bowling, while parents will be fans of the nine large-screen televisions, gastropub menu, and tasteful aesthetic.

Camp Cloister

Need a vacation from your vacation? Take the kids to camp for a day of fun activities around The Cloister. Rumor has it that spots fill up fast, so sign up as soon as you book your trip.

Aegean Sea Tours & Travel

Aegean Sea Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Encompassing most of the Greek Islands, the Aegean Sea stretches from mainland Greece east to mainland Turkey and is one of the most captivating regions of the Mediterranean. S

ome of its most popular islands are Mykonos, Santorini, Crete, and Rhodes, which can be explored by small ship cruises or tours. The Aegean Islands offer much more than sand and sea: ancient history, archaeology, a variety of cultural influences, exceptional cuisine, and scenic hiking and cycling.

Except for the islands of the Ionian Sea west of the Greek mainland, almost all of the fabled Greek Islands are in the Aegean Sea.

This is the legendary realm of much of Homer’s Odyssey, of Greek gods such as Apollo (the island of Delos was his sanctuary) and Poseidon (god of the sea), of the Atlantis myth of a civilization beneath the sea – said to have been the result of the horrific volcanic explosion that blew apart the present-day island of Santorini – and the birthplace of Hippocrates and many other notable ancient Greeks.

The area has been under the control, at varying times, of the Greeks, the Romans, the Venetians, the Byzantines, the Turks, and the modern-day Italians. It’s harbored crusaders, Knights Templars, brigands, conquerors, and hundreds of generations of fishermen, farmers, shopkeepers, goat herders and winemakers.

Aegean Sea Islands

Island groupings include the Cyclades – the mostly desert-like isles southeast of Athens that form a circle around the once-sacred island of Delos. Today, they form the most visited part of the Aegean, with popular stops such as Mykonos, Santorini, Ios, Amorgos, Milos, Paros, and Naxos. Cycladic architecture is typically cubist and blindingly white and deep blue, echoing the colors of the iconic Greek sky, sea and puffy clouds.

The Dodecanese Islands of the southeast Aegean lie near Turkey and display heavy Byzantine and Turkish influences. Rhodes, the Island of Roses, has wonderful medieval architecture and riveting history; Lindos is a pretty town with ancient ruins. Kos and Patmos are two other exceptional islands in this chain.

The island of Crete is Greece’s largest, and is known for the ancient archaeological site of Knossos -- ruins of the great Minoan civilization -- as well as caves, beaches, and other natural wonders.

In the northwest Aegean, the Sporades are a small group; of islands, with two particular beauties: Skiathos and Skopelos  . And in the islands of the northeast Aegean, Lesbos stands out.

The Saronic Islands, near Athens, are worth a visit too – Hydra, Aegina, and Poros are the most interesting.

While primarily associated with Greece, the Aegean also fronts the west coast of Turkey, where scenic boat rides are a must. Top sights along the way include the extensive and wonderfully preserved ruins of classical-era Ephesus, near the lively coastal city of Kusadasi.

5 Top Activities in the Aegean Sea

If you’re thinking of Aegean Sea travel as Greek islands, beaches, and yachts with champagne overlooking stunning blue waters...you’ve got half of it right.

The Aegean region is all of that, but it also has a wealth of unexpected joys and activities available to travelers.

1. Hiking - There are dozens of amazing hiking trails around the islands in the Aegean. And because of Greece’s incredible past you might just stumble upon an ancient site or two, far off the tourist radar.

Because there are so many, it’s easy to find a hike suitable to your physical level, and regardless of whether you get to the top or not, the views along the way are unbeatable. Santorini in particular holds some of the most popular hikes, rewarding travelers with stunning views over the ocean, unique from the common postcard shots.

2. Wildlife - Dolphins are one of the most popular wildlife sightings in the Aegean, and have been a staple of the area for centuries. Dolphins are depicted in many ancient Greek texts, and so their existence there is intrinsically linked to the Aegean culture.

Many initiatives are in place to keep them protected, and it is advisable to look very carefully at any dolphin related activities on your itinerary.

3. Water Sports - Yes, the yacht is nice, and what better way to enjoy relaxing on the deck with your cocktail than after an exhilarating day of waterskiing, wakeboarding, canoeing, snorkeling, and scuba diving? Ok, some maybe not all in the same day, but during your Aegean cruise, these options are often available and are a great way to enjoy the sun and warm waters.

4. History Tours - The Aegean is home to some of the most ancient sites in the world, so no trip around the Greek Islands and Turkish coast could be complete without at least some historical context to bring the region into fascinating focus.

Touring the many ancient ruins around the islands with a knowledgeable guide, often a professional archaeologist or historian, is one of the highlights when visiting the Aegean Sea.

5. Wine Tasting - Greece or Turkey may not immediately spring to mind when one thinks about wine, however there are many options for partaking around the Aegean islands.

Wine enthusiasts will enjoy the opportunity to taste some unique varietals, not common in the United States or other well known wine regions in Europe. Sweet white wine is one of the most popular items. And one of the many things Greece excels at it’s delicious food, particularly cheese and olives, both of which incidentally go very well with wine.

  • Twelve Incredible Australian Islands for When You Want to Get Off the Mainland

So, we thought we'd save you some time and handpick 12 of the best islands in Australia. They should at least get you started.

ABROLHOS ISLANDS - one of the best australian islands

Coral Coast Tourism

Abrolhos Islands, Western Australia

The Houtman Abrolhos isn't just an island, it's an archipelago. 122 isles make up the marvel, more or less clustered in three groups across 100 kilometres. They lie 60 kilometres off the Coral Coast, west of Geraldton, which is four hours north of Perth.

Lose yourself snorkelling or diving among colourful coral, spotting Australian sea lions and looking out for more than 90 species of seabirds, including majestic white-breasted sea eagles. For mind-blowing views, jump aboard a scenic flight and see the best Australian island from a bird's eye view.

Stradbroke Island - one of the best Australian islands

Paul Ewart for Tourism and Events Queensland

North Stradbroke Island, Queensland

Located 25 minutes by ferry off the Queensland coast, Stradbroke Island is an easy day trip from Brisbane. It's the second biggest sand island in the world after K'gari (more on that Australian island later). For swimming in gentle waves, head to idyllic Cylinder Beach; for wilder surf, make your destination the 38-kilometre-long Main Beach.

Overnight stays include beach camping , as well as an array of cottages, hotels and B&Bs. Just north of Straddie is Moreton Island , a wonderland of long beaches, clear lakes and a national park. Consider sleeping over at Tangalooma , an eco-friendly resort where you can hand-feed wild dolphins and swim around a shipwreck.

Lord Howe Island - Australia

Tom Archer, Destination NSW

Lord Howe Island, New South Wales

Just 11 kilometres long and two kilometres wide, Lord Howe , a two-hour flight east of Sydney, is explorable within a few days. Whenever you travel on this top Australian island, you won't have to fear tourist crowds: only 400 visitors are permitted at any one time and the population is just 382. Prepare to have pretty beaches, spectacular diving sites and rugged terrain all to yourself.

Among the best adventures are the Mount Gower Trail, a steep, eight-hour trek that carries you 875 metres above sea level, and Erscott's Hole, a natural wonder where you can snorkel among staghorn coral, bluefish and double-headed wrasse. With all this natural beauty, it's easy to see why it made our list of the best islands in Australia and best overall places to visit in Australia .

The Neck Bruny Island - one of the best australian islands

Tourism Australia

Bruny Island, Tasmania

Bruny feels completely remote, yet it's just a 20-minute ferry ride from the coast and, with driving time added, 50 minutes from Hobart. The beauty of this proximity to the city is that, despite all the wilderness, you can find some top nosh: for fish and chips head to Jetty Cafe; for pub grub swing by Hotel Bruny; for cheese visit Bruny Island Cheese Company;  and for a tipple, there's the Bruny Island House of Whisky .

Meanwhile, nature lovers will find white wallabies at Inala Nature Reserve, windswept headlands at Cape Bruny Lighthouse and head-clearing watery views at Cloudy Bay.

Magnetic Island, one of the best islands in Australia

Khy Orchard for Tourism and Events Queensland

Magnetic Island, Queensland

There are hundreds of islands in the Great Barrier Reef area, offering everything from secluded campsites to five-star luxury resorts. But, for convenience, outdoor adventures and, most importantly, koala spotting, Magnetic Island is hard to go past — found just 20 minutes from Townsville.

Get active with sea kayaking tours and yoga classes , get artsy at beachside markets and galleries or relax at stunning beaches like Horseshoe Bay . If you're keen to venture further, jump aboard a Great Barrier Reef snorkelling, diving or sightseeing tour.

Kangaroo Island - one of the best islands in Australia.

Isaac Forman for SA Tourism Commission

Kangaroo Island, South Australia

With a whopping 509 kilometres of coastline, Kangaroo Island could have you exploring for weeks. To get there, take a 45-minute ferry ride from Cape Jervis, on the Fleurieu Peninsula — around 100 kilometres south of Adelaide. Then gear up to share your holiday with sea lions, fur seals, little penguins, echidnas, koalas and, you guessed it, kangaroos. The Australian island is a haven for creatures who've struggled to survive elsewhere, especially local sea lions, who were hunted to the brink of extinction in the 19th and 20th centuries.

There are numerous national parks and conservation areas, and the over 4000-strong population is big on food and wine. You also can't talk about this Aussie island without mentioning the spectacular beaches — our favourite being the one and only Stoke's Bay .

The Whitsundays - home to some of the best islands in Australia.

Guillaume Marques (Unsplash)

The Whitsundays, Queensland

In total, The Whitsundays is made up of 74 islands. It's hard to choose the best, especially as each depends on what kind of holiday you're after. You can go camping on the famous Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island, live it up at The InterContinental Resort on Hayman Island or even escape to an adult's-only oasis like Elysian Retreat on Long Island — one of the best adults-only accommodations in The Whitsundays .

From any of these small islands in Australia, you can easily get to the Great Barrier Reef and countless other stunning natural landscapes. This region is also one of Australia's national parks, so it will continue to be preserved for many years to come — even if the reef itself does die off.

The Basin, Rottnest Island - one of the best islands in Australia

Tourism Western Australia

Rottnest Island, Western Australia

Rottnest Island is a 90-minute ferry ride from Barrack Street Jetty, Perth, or 25 minutes from Fremantle. Like Kangaroo Island, Rottnest has given a big dose of much-needed love to Australia's wild creatures, particularly quokkas, which now number 12,000 or so. Dedicate some time to spotting them (though please don't go touching, patting or feeding), before visiting pristine beaches, such as The Basin, where you'll find an underwater playground, and Little Parakeet Bay, backdropped by striking rock formations.

The best way to explore the Aussie island is by bike, but we are also big fans of getting on a sea kayak for the arvo as well. Prefer to stay here longer than a day? We recommend spending a few nights in Discovery Rottnest Island 's luxe glamping tents by the beach.

Philip Island - one of the best islands in Australia, Victoria.

Phillip Island, Victoria

Phillip Island 's biggest drawcard is its penguin parade. Every night, at sunset, the island's resident little penguins return to their terrestrial homes, having spent the day out and about fishing. Beyond wildlife watching, go wine and craft beer tasting, bliss out with a massage or spa treatment or conquer a trail on foot, such as the Cape Woolamai Walk , which traverses dramatic clifftops along Phillip's southernmost point.

Follow the links for suggestions on where to eat and drink and the best outdoor activities on Phillip Island . Unlike most of the other Australian islands on this list, you can reach this one by road: it's around 90 minutes' drive south of Melbourne, making it one of the most accessible islands in Australia.

K'gari (Fraser Island), Queensland

World Heritage-listed K'gari (Fraser Island) is the biggest sand island in the world. There are 184,000 hectares of the stuff, made up of 72 colours and mostly in the form of magnificent dunes, much of which are covered in rainforest. If you've time on your hands, take on the Great Walk , an eight-day epic that visits many of K'gari's 100 freshwater lakes.

If not, jump aboard a 4WD and cruise along 75 Mile Beach (one of our favourite adventure experiences in Australia ), take a dip at Champagne Pools along the way and pay a visit to awe-inspiring Boorangoora(Lake McKenzie) , a perched lake made up of rainwater and soft silica sand.

King Island - one of the best islands in Australia.

Andrew Wilson for Tourism Tasmania

King Island, Tasmania

You might have no idea where King Island is, but may have seen its cheese at the supermarket. King Island Dairy's decadent triple cream brie is an Aussie gourmet staple. But it's far from the only treat you'll be sampling in this lush place, which lies in the Bass Strait, halfway between Victoria and Tassie.

Count, too, on super-fresh seafood, flavourful beef and a cornucopia of produce from local growers. When you're finished feasting, stroll along the white sands of Disappointment Bay, visit a 7000-year-old calcified forest and go horse riding by the sea. This under-the-radar travel destination is undoubtedly one of the best islands in Australia.

Bribie Island in Queensland - one of the best islands in Australia.

Tourism and Events Queensland

Bribie Island, Queensland

Bribie Island isn't that far from Brisbane (a little over one and a half hours) but is a haven for local wildlife. That's because this Australian island is home to the Pumicestone Passage, a protected marine park where you'll find dugongs, turtles, dolphins and a diverse range of birdlife.

All the classic Aussie land animals will be found all over the island, too. And, of course, the beaches are just stupidly beautiful. Whether you're a local or tourist, this island offers all the quintessential Australian sites you must see.

Itinerary notes.

There are new Health & Safety Protocols for National Geographic Journeys tours. Please see here for full details and up-to-date requirements as they may change.

Family Journeys are designed for groups traveling with children between the ages of 7 and 17. Your group must include a child in order to book, and anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Day 1 Playa del Carmen

Welcome to Playa del Carmen –your arrival transfer to the hotel is included. Check in and get excited to meet your fellow travelers during a welcome meeting this evening where all families can bond before the Journey ahead.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 2 day trip to cozumel.

Your adventure-filled day begins with a ferry ride to the island of Cozumel. Protected by offshore reefs, Cozumel was sparsely populated, but pirates and trading ships often sought shelter and replenished their supplies here. During the Mayan period the island was used as a commercial and ceremonial centre, making it home to several small archaeological sites with deep historical significance. Travel by jeep on an island safari while learning about the land and efforts to protect the nearby reefs. Swim in the clear waters, enjoy lunch with a view, and listen to stories of the ancient Maya. Return to the hotel in Playa del Carmen where dinner will be at your leisure.

Meals included:

Day 3 playa del carmen/mérida.

After breakfast, begin the journey to Merída. The first stop along the way will be to Chichen Itzá. National Geographic has ranked Chichen Itzá as the best Mayan ruin to visit in Mexico. This significant archaeological site is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, and houses 26 ruins in one location. Join an expert guide who will teach you about the site, including the pyramid, known as El Castillo or El Caracol. You’ll also see the largest Maya ball court in the Americas–Tlachtli.

Day 4 Mérida

Head into the jungle and marvel at the cenotes, giant holes in the earth filled with clear blue water. Considered sacred to the ancient Maya, cenotes have been studied by National Geographic Explorers like Dr. Guillermo de Anda extensively. Dive in with your family and channel your inner archeologist while exploring these waterways. Santa Barbara is home to 4 different pools to choose from, offering truly unique swimming experiences with the bonus of using a colorful small train as transport between. Return to Merída in the early evening for a free evening.

Day 5 Celestún Biosphere Reserve / Merida

Spend part of the day observing wildlife in the Celestún Biosphere Reserve with knowledgeable local guides. In the reserve there are over 200 species of birds that migrate or live here year-round. The area also serves as a hatching ground for endangered sea turtles. During winter the wetland boasts flocks of thousands of flamingos, offering quite a sight. Be sure to remain on the lookout for other wildlife like herons, ducks and pelicans. This immersive experience offers a wonderful opportunity to learn about and appreciate diverse wildlife in their natural habitat. The afternoon back in Merída will be free to explore as you choose.

Day 6 Mérida/Playa del Carmen

Ascend the pyramid steps of Kinich Kak Moo, Izamal’s Mayan pyramid and witness the excitement on your kids’ faces as they conquer the ancient steps and take in the panoramic views from the top. Spend time here amid the buildings of uniform yellow and enjoy some ice cream before the drive back to the coast and white sand beaches of Playa del Carmen. Return to the hotel and relax with a swim in the pool or take advantage of some of the hotel’s many amenities to unwind after your day’s journey.

Day 7 Playa del Carmen

Enjoy a day on your own, taking advantage of the optional activities in the area, lounging by the hotel pool, or building sandcastles on the beach. You can also choose to pre-book a visit to the Mayan city of Tulum, the only Mayan city built on a coast and one of the few protected by a wall of limestone. In the evening, join your fellow travelers for an included farewell dinner where everyone can swap stories and reflect on a week of fun and engaging exploration.

Why coolcations are the next big travel trend, plus where to go and what to do

Emily Degn

September 19, 2024 // By Emily Degn

By Emily Degn September 19, 2024

Coolcations are chill in places like Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

With the world heating up, it's no surprise travelers are looking for respite from climbing temperatures. Instead of hitting the popular destinations in the heat of summer — with millions of others — it might be time to consider a coolcation.

What is a coolcation?

Whether that means traveling off-season when crowds and temperatures have decreased or visiting cooler-climate destinations when everyone else is looking for hot sandy beaches, coolcationing is one of the hottest travel trends.

From northern Utah to coastal Maine, North America is filled with fantastic coolcation destinations

Having traveled around the country in search of temperatures below 75 degrees, I understand how vacationing in colder climates has merits. You can't beat the prices, lack of crowds, and authenticity of traveling to places others aren't drawn to (yet).

Advertisement Advertisement

10 coolcation destinations in North America

In North America, you can take year-round arctic excursions or a mountain getaway, visit New England cities and towns in the fall, or linger by the seaside on either coast. I'll guide you to my 10 favorite places for the ultimate coolcation.

Anacortes, Washington

Anacortes is a best kept secret of the Pacific Northwest

Hovering around 70 degrees in the middle of the summer, this coastal town located on Fidalgo Island (which you can drive to) is the ultimate year-round coolcation spot. Thanks to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, it's a summer activity hub, where ferries dock to shuttle millions around the San Juan Islands and Canada. But even at its busiest, it's a perfect getaway surrounded by beautiful Pacific Northwest waters and mountains.

To skip tourist traffic, come in the autumn or winter when tourism decreases. Try your hand at sea kayaking, go hiking at Washington Park, catch sunsets over the water at Cap Sante Park, or take a chilly dip at Tugboat Beach. Keep your eye out for harbor seals, bald eagles, orca whales, otters, and, in October, humpback whales. There are even puffins in September.

In town, snag treasures from Pelican Bay Books , grab a fresh mozzarella sandwich at Gere-a-Deli , and find seasonal fare at Rockfish Grill and Anacortes Brewery .

Prince Edward Island, Canada

Covehead Harbour lighthouse is a Prince Edward Island gem

Located on the eastern shores of Canada in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, this maritime island is known for its red sand beaches, lobster and mussels, and inspiration for Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables books . You can reach it via a bridge (from New Brunswick), ferry (from Nova Scotia), or plane.

The northern PEI climate makes it a fantastic coolcation spot during summer, but the shoulder seasons are the time to go. Stroll the quaint streets of Charlottetown , take chilly walks on the beach and coastal drives along the shores, or go full bookworm and visit Ms. Montgomery’s birthplace on the island's north side.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming and Montana

Visigint Yellowstone in the shoulder season means fewer crowds

While most people come to Yellowstone in the summer, the park is open year-round. Access is limited after the first week of October, but if you, like me, would rather sleep under the stars than a ceiling, off-season Yellowstone is a fantastic coolcation.

My advice? Go in mid-October. You’ll skip the crowds and the mosquitos and see a slew of wildlife at their most active, such as bears preparing for hibernation and rut-season elk. Bring binoculars, bear spray, warm clothes, plenty of food and water, a weatherproof tent, and more socks than you need.

If you want a roof over your head, check out a romantic hotel near the national park for a special fall getaway.

Portland, Maine

Portland is known for its cooler climate and maritime ways

Shoulder season is the perfect time to visit Portland, Maine , and the picturesque East Coast city makes a magical coolcation in the winter. Get a hotel by the water in town, hit a local brewery, grab a coffee and pastry at Bake Maine , and wander through streets that look straight out of a 19th-century nautical painting. Don’t skip the nearby Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park.

Madison, Wisconsin

With awesome art museums and an unforgettable Capitol, Madison is a great Midwestern coolcation destination

I consider this to be the most underrated capital in the U.S. Every time I cross the country, I make a point of spending a day here. Home to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, it has a big city feel in a small package. It's a town filled with arts, great food, and, as it's surrounded by nature, lots of outdoor activities.

For a true Madison coolcation, wander along the frozen lake shores, then warm up with unmatched Tibetan dumplings at The Globe Restaurant . Don't forget to take in the jaw-dropping architecture inside Madison's hilltop Capitol .

Logan, Utah

Logan's aspen forests, rocky climbs, and snow-coated peaks fit the bill for a coolcation

With plentiful hot springs and mountains encircling this Cache Valley gem, this is one of the top coolcations you can take in colder months if you’re even remotely into the outdoors. Get a site at Guinavah Campground up Logan Canyon to be close to beloved hikes like the Crimson Wall Trail. If you go in the autumn, you’ll see vibrant aspens, while winter provides heavy snowfall for solitude seekers.

Stroll or bike around town, visit the Cache Pioneer Museum , grab pizzas at Jack's Wood-Fired Oven , pupusas at El Salvador Los Primos , and chicken tikka at Tandoori Oven — some would argue the best Indian restaurant in Utah. A stay in an offbeat themed hotel room could add to the fun.

Woodstock, Vermont

A coolcation can mean visiting the wooden bridges of Woodstock

When you picture a quintessential New England town in fall, complete with wood-covered bridges and blazing red and gold trees, it's Woodstock, Vermont. It's pretty spectacular year-round but autumn and winter are particularly beautiful.

For a cozy New England coolcation, start with a stroll around town, get a bite at the indoor Woodstock Farmers Market , play on the creekside covered bridges, read at Yankee Bookshop, and splurge on a fantastic cup of coffee from Mon Vert Cafe.

Hop in the car and drive around the countryside for Instagrammable shots of glorious fall colors at Sleepy Hollow Farm, and take a hike at Quechee Gorge at Quechee State Park .

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Architecture and history buffs can coolcation around impressive buildings like the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia

This chilly gem on Canada’s west coast offers a coolcation filled with European romance and outdoor adventure. As the capital of British Columbia, there's something for everyone, from arts to food, culture, and more.

For building buffs, take a free tour of the stunning Legislative Assembly of British Columbia building or visit Hatley Castle . As one of the best cities for eco-friendly travel , outdoorsy types should take a treetop stroll at Malahat SkyWalk or a whale-watching tour on the water. I highly recommend Springtide Whale Watching Eco Tours, possibly the world’s most sustainable tour company.

Salem, Massachusetts

Coolcation ideas include visiting the Witch Memorial in Salem

Salem is an ideal coolcation spot for anyone who loves history and maritime culture. An autumnal chill sets the scene for walking tours, strolls through cemeteries and historic homes, and visiting witchy sights like the Salem Witch Museum . But this New England town is so much more than its troubled past.

Get a taste of colonial life at the three-acre Pioneer Village Salem , check out oceanic and maritime art at the Peabody Essex Museum , and see what today's artists bring at the Punto Urban Art Museum. After a walk around town, warm up at one of the many pubs, such as Mercy Tavern or Olde Main Street Pub. If you’re hungry, Flying Saucer Pizza Company is a phenomenal choice for a casual bite, or make a night of it at the buzzy Ledger Restaurant & Bar .

Missoula, Montana

The Clark Fork River runs right through Missoula

This college town has a strong community of local farmers and purveyors, a cool arts and music scene, and access to plenty of outdoor gems. And with seriously cold temperatures in the off-season and chilly summer nights, it makes for a classic coolcation.

Bundle up and walk along the Clark Fork River, soak at the Lolo Hot Springs Pools Resort , or hike in the surrounding mountains. The food scene swings in many directions, with restaurants offering college students and locals bites from around the world. Break Espresso is my favorite place in town to grab a treat and a steaming drink after enjoying the great outdoors. For something more substantial, try Golden Yolk Griddle or Michi Ramen Bar.
