Romulan Star Empire

The Romulan Star Empire (or simply, the Romulan Empire ) has been a major galactic power since the 22nd century and is the traditional government of the Romulan people and their subject worlds and species.

For most of recorded interstellar history, the Empire has been known for its xenophobic character and policies of extreme secrecy and territorial protectionism. The Hobus supernova of 2387 , and the ensuing destruction of Romulus , threw the Empire into a great deal of turmoil, encompassing several civil wars, territorial separation, reunification and re-constitution.

Since then, a new capital was established on Rator III , where Sela eventually proclaimed herself Empress in 2408 . However, after her disappearance in 2409 , the status of Rator III as capital was challanged by Romulan and Reman fugitives who strive for an eventual re-unification with the Vulcans and have founded a new faction - the Romulan Republic - on New Romulus .

Culture [ | ]

Romulan society is secretive and xenophobic. Romulan intellectuals thrive on deceit and subterfuge, and they favor more of a cunning approach to battle rather than sheer brute force, and this is reflected in the fact that most Romulan vessels have cloaking technology.

Empress Sela

The Romulan Star Empire used to be ruled by the Romulan Senate and the Continuing Committee , both of which were overseen by the Praetor . In 2408 , the Romulan Star Empire was transformed into a monarchy ruled by self-proclaimed Empress Sela on Rator III . She enjoyed the support of the Empire's noble houses but it is not clear if the Romulan Senate has been dissolved by the latest reforms.

Roman Empire

The Roman Empire ( Latin: Imperium Romanum ) was an ancient civilization on Earth that was one of the fore bearers of the modern human civilization that now inhabits Earth .

History [ ]

It existed from the 1st century BC until 4 September 476 when the final Western Roman Emperor was deposed. The capital of the Empire was the city of Rome , and the state succeeded the Roman Republic , which had lasted from the 5th to the 1st centuries BCE.

At its peak, the Roman Empire controlled most of Europe , as well as portions of Asia and Africa . The Roman Empire at its largest controlled 5,900,000 square kilometers of territory.

However, after reaching its greatest extent, the Empire began a long, slow decline. The city of Rome was sacked in 410 by the Visigoths , during the reign of Emperor Honorius, and subsequently fell before the end of the century. Almost 2,000 years later, during the Borg Incursion of 2366-2367 , Captain Jean-Luc Picard wondered if Honorius was truly cognizant of the fact that his Empire was collapsing while his capital was being sacked. ( TNG episode : " The Best of Both Worlds ")

The Roman Empire played a major role in the history of Earth, with its influences in areas such as culture , law, language , government, and architecture continuing into the 24th century .

Both the Williams and Kirk families on Earth were very interested in Roman history, to the point that some family members named their children after Roman historical figures. ( ENT - Rise of the Federation novel : A Choice of Futures and TOS novel : Home Is the Hunter )

On the planet 892-IV, or Magna Roma , the culture developed a parallel Roman Empire, which did not fall and existed for at least 20 centuries. This parallel Empire reached a level of technology similar to that of 20th century Earth by the time the USS Enterprise visited the planet in 2268 . ( TOS episode : " Bread and Circuses ")

It was later theorized that the Preservers had taken a number of Earth Romans and seeded that world with these people, who established their Empire on that world. ( TOS novel : Ex Machina )

After the visit of the USS Enterprise to Pollux II , it was theorized that the Beings had visited other worlds in addition to Earth, such as Vulcan and perhaps Romulus as well. This theory provided a possible reason why Romulan culture was so similar to the culture of the Roman Empire. (Startrek.com article Strange Relations: Romulans and Vulcans )

In the mirror universe , the history of the Roman Empire followed a similar course. ( TOS - Mirror Universe novel : The Sorrows of Empire )

Recasting Star Trek: DS9 For A Movie Reboot

Paris has fallen trailer introduces new heroes to gerard butler's $523.5m action franchise, yellowstone season 5 part 2 trailer: chaos ensues as john dutton is missing from the ranch.

  • Nana Visitor personally prevented a love story between her character Kira and Gul Dukat on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
  • Visitor argued with the show's writers about this storyline and successfully stopped it from happening.
  • She felt strongly against her character having an affair with Dukat, as he was the "worst of the worst," so the storyline was changed to involve Kira's mother instead.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine star Nana Visitor personally prevented a horrible love story between her character, Major Kira Nerys, and Gul Dukat (Mark Alaimo) from happening. The loathsome Dukat spent the 7 seasons of DS9 trying to seduce and bed Kira, who resisted the questionable "charms" of her arch enemy. In the DS9 season 6 episode "Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night," Kira time-traveled to learn that Dukat had an affair with her mother, Kira Meru (Leslie Hope).

Appearing on The Shuttlepod Show to discuss Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and her career, Nana Visitor told hosts Connor Trinneer, Erica LaRose, and Mark Cartier about the times she argued with DS9 's writers about storylines. One argument Visitor won stopped Major Kira from having an affair with Gul Dukat. Check out her quote and watch The Shuttlepod Show video at the 41:49 time stamp below:

Dukat was a Cardassian, one of the species that dominated my planet, and he was the worst. He was the worst of the worst. And they wanted me to have an affair with him. I was like, “Other Cardassians, absolutely. Not him. Never him." So I actually won that one… Maybe they wanted to turn his character… But I couldn’t see it… So it was my mother. They had a relationship.

Star Trek: DS9's Gul Dukat Relationships With Kira & Her Mother Explained

Gul Dukat is one of the most fascinatingly complex villains in all of Star Trek because he is irredeemably twisted and evil. The former head of the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor, Dukat had no qualms about keeping Bajoran women as mistresses. One of them was Kira Meru, who became Dukat's "comfort woman" to keep her husband and children, including young Nerys, well-fed and clothed out of Dukat's "generosity." Nerys did not learn her mother was involved with Dukat until DS9 season 6. Meanwhile, Dukat never relented from his attempts to seduce and bed Major Kira throughout DS9, but season 6's revelation that Dukat was the lover of Nerys' mother makes his amorous advances toward her daughter even more repugnant.

Nana Visitor was right to put her foot down and stop DS9 writers from romantically pairing Major Kira and Dukat, which would have irreparably destroyed the integrity and character of Deep Space Nine's First Officer . However, DS9 's creative team conjured up an arguably even grosser romantic pairing for Gul Dukat than Major Kira; in DS9 season 7, Dukat and Kai Winn Adami (Louise Fletcher) became lovers as they tried to bring down Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). Thankfully, Nana Visitor saved Major Kira from the fate of being the odious Gul Dukat's girlfriend on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Memory Alpha

Mira Romaine

Lieutenant Mira Romaine was a 23rd century Starfleet sciences division specialist . She was born on the Martian Colony 3 to Jacques and Lydia Romaine .

According to her psychological profile , Mira had a history of psychosomatic illness that consisted of occasional and teenage routine incidents. Mira was highly marked for her extreme flexibility and exceptional pliancy to new learning situations.

In 2269 , Lt. Romaine was given her first deep space assignment aboard the USS Enterprise when she was placed in charge of supervising the transfer of equipment to Memory Alpha . While aboard the Enterprise , she became romantically involved with Montgomery Scott .

During the mission, Romaine's mind came under attack by a group of non-corporeal lifeforms called the Zetarians , at which time she fainted . She later had several premonitions , including that of the attack on the Enterprise , the attack on Memory Alpha, and finally one of Scotty's death .

Later, when the Enterprise fired its phasers at the shadowing Zetarians, Mira experienced harsh pain. After reporting to sickbay , Dr. McCoy gave her a standard Steinman analysis . The results showed that physically her readings were identical, however, two of her hyperencephalograms indicated that her brain circuitry patterns had been altered. They were eventually identified as the impulse tracking patterns of the Zetarian cloud shadowing the Enterprise .

Mira was placed in the pressure chamber where she was subjected to increased pressure. Once the pressure chamber reached roughly 35 atmospheres , the Zetarians were forced from her body.

With the help of Scott, Romaine was able to recover from the attack and served out her first deep space deployment at Memory Alpha. ( TOS : " The Lights of Zetar ")

Appendices [ ]

Background information [ ].

Romaine was played by actress Jan Shutan .

According to Shutan in an interview with Starlog ( February 1994 , pp. 58-59):

" First of all, I think Shari Lewis was supposed to get the part; she wrote it for herself, " Shutan notes. " When I went in to interview, Shari was there. I didn't know she had written it or was up for it, and I got it right away. [Producer] Freddie Freiberger brought me in. because he thought I was perfect for the role and [director] Herb Kenwith and I really hit it off. I loved working with Herb: he's an angel. " [....] " I enjoyed doing the whole show, every second of it. James Doohan was an awfully nice guy, very sweet. My take on Mira Romaine was that she was a terrifically smart woman caught in another world. I liked Mira. she was me, " the actress jokes. " I hoped Mira would be a recurring character, but the series was cancelled shortly after. " One aspect of the series bothered her. " I remember being embarrassed about wearing that short costume because I had chubby thighs. " she laughs. " That's why my family and I laugh so hard every time we see the show– we get hysterical at what I look like in that stupid costume. Everyone on that show had long, gorgeous legs and I only had these cute little thighs. I didn't think they belonged on television! " She had no problems with the special FX. " I really didn't work with them, they came later. They would put me in a room and tell me what was happening. For me. it was essentially the lights going in and out of my eyes. The camera would go in and out and the FX people would put it in later. " She enjoyed the exorcism. " That was fun. Being in the hyperbaric chamber was kind of weird. " she notes. " Lying rigid and being suspended in that thing took a long time to do. " Shutan's floating in the tube was " done with a board hidden underneath me. "

A deleted scene from Star Trek Beyond had Scott mentioning that he was about to have dinner with a Lieutenant Romaine .

Apocrypha [ ]

According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation novel Takedown , a medical facility was later named after her. It was dedicated to helping Starfleet officers who had undergone similar takeovers of their mental faculties by aliens.

She appeared in the Star Trek: The Original Series novel #42 " Memory Prime ", assigned to the Memory Prime installation in support of the Pathfinders, artificial intelligences who performed the primary collation and sifting of data from the Memory network. Memory Prime acted as the "hub" of the Memory network constructed in the aftermath of the Memory Alpha disaster.

The Star Trek: The Original Series comic book " Debt of Honor " had her achieving the rank of captain and chief archivist of Memory Alpha by 2286 .

"Mira" and "Romaine" are both varieties of lettuce.
