Does size really matter?

We’re talking, of course, about the world’s largest cruise ships. For some travelers, bigger automatically means better. But if you’re going to shell out your hard-earned dollars for a vacation on one of the top lines, it’s important to research if the experience is a good fit for you.

You may be looking for a party-packed weekend with other young travelers or a family adventure with something for both kids and adults. But if you won’t settle for anything but colossal, here’s what you need to know about record-breaking ships. 

What is the biggest cruise ship?

The Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is the biggest cruise ship in the world. The nearly 1,200-foot ship set sail in January 2024 and accommodates 5,610 guests and 2,350 crew members, according to Royal Caribbean. 

According to the DNV, the leading maritime register, the Icon of the Seas has a gross tonnage of 248,663 . Gross tonnage measures a ship’s total volume. 

Icon of the Seas’ maiden voyage was so highly anticipated that it nearly sold out in just a few hours, Business Insider reported. Some cruise-goers even paid $75,000 a week to stay in an exclusive three-story townhouse complete with private balconies, a whirlpool, a backyard and slides.

What is the biggest ship ever built?

The Icon of the Seas might be the biggest cruise ship to set sail, but it’s not the largest boat in the history of maritime travel. The Seawise Giant, also known as the Knock Nevis, was the biggest ship ever built at 564,739 tons, according to The New York Times. 

The oil tanker was built in the 1970s but caught fire and sank in 1988 after Iraqi planes bombed an offshore terminal. A Norwegian company rescued it a year later from shallow waters and repaired it. The Seawise Giant continued transporting oil until its final journey concluded in December 2009.

How big was the Titanic?

The Titanic was about 883 feet long and had a gross tonnage of 46,329 tons – it’s sizable, but much smaller than the world’s biggest ship; the Icon of the Seas which is 1,200 feet long and has a gross tonnage of 248,663.

There were over 2,200 passengers on the Titanic – more than 1,500 of them died in the 1912 sinking.

We have fallen in love with Capt Scala from his daily instagram posts ! We are praying he will be our Capt on the Seaside in June . I would love to have the privilege to meet him. So my question is , does anyone know if the ship captains have a term of service , and rotate off after so many months ? More importantly , is there a chance Capt Scala will not be sailing on the Seaside in June of 2018 ?

I will be very sad if he is not on our sailing !

So the official answer is no, he won't be on your sailing. He just posted yesterday on Instagram (check comments on the Cozumel dolphins post) that he will be leaving Seaside at the end of January and moving to a new ship, presumably Seaview.

I'm just hoping he'll be on my 1/27 sailing and not leaving that day! He's been an excellent social media ambassador for the company. I'm sure they must be compensating him very well, given that he's obviously their star captain and they hired him away from Princess.

We met Captain Massa at the Cruise Critic Meet & Mingle on our Divina cruise in July and he is very personable and knowledgeable . We are not disappointed in sailing with him again , but we truly enjoyed the quick wit of Captain Scala . We are pleased to have Andre as the Cruise Director . He kept us laughing on the Divina .

There's really no way to know who will be on board in June. Royal and Celebrity do 3 months on 3 months off for captains so if MSC does something similar, you'd have an unknown captain when you sail. CD's have longer schedules but it might be 6 month contracts elsewhere.

The annoying thing about Scala leaving earlier is that he'd previously said that he would be there thru March.

Amusingly, I just got email from Captain Scala for my cruise that starts this Saturday. The same one that he will not be captain on :). Their level of incompetence continues to amaze me.

I am Captain Pier Paolo Scala and I will be the Master in command of MSC Seaside for your upcoming cruise. Working for MSC Cruises is the culmination of my career that started over 30 years ago. Being part of the MSC family makes me very proud, and at the same time, it is a great honor.

I just got the same email. I was going to post this but you did it first.:)

I spoke with Captain Scala on our Seaside cruise in January and he mentioned that he would be leaving soon to go to the shipyard as he will be bringing out the Seaview

Funny I first saw him on Discovery, Mighty Ship they showed Divina crew. I loved how he responded and how he showed the ship. I hope he is out captain in our August sailing. Starting following him in Instagram.

Amusingly, I just got email from Captain Scala.... .

We loved Captain Massa! Hope he is Captain Scala's replacement!

Update -- Captain Scala posted on Instagram today that he'll be back on Seaside in October.

Also.. I sent a message to him on Instagram (by responding to one of his posts) about the email from him saying he'd be our master on next week's sailing. I'm not sure if he was being serious or not, but he responded "I may be!!!" So I do wonder what's going on. May not know until I board on Saturday.

Meanwhile, he posted a picture of a farewell cake they made for him, the chief engineer and hotel director, all of whom are supposedly leaving after this week (both of their names were also in the email for who would be on board next week. although to be fair I don't know for sure that it was the current person or their replacement).

Well I am on Seaside and the email was correct. Captain Scala is still onboard.

The morning show on the ship (channel 5) said this morning that he we will on a few more weeks...

We loved Captain Massa on the Divina in 11/2016, but if Captain Scala in still on we have an opportunity to meet him! Either way, it's a win/win!
