The castle was built in the Scottish Baronial style and is surrounded by a garden and commands stunning views of the nearby mountains, lakes, woodlands and valleys.

King John's Castle

About King John's Castle

Located alongside the River Shannon in County Limerick, on King's Island. Dating back to 922, to a time when Vikings were the inhabitants of the island (Thormodr Helgason, the Viking sea-king, built the first settlement here. The castle itself was built in 1200, under the instruction of King John of England.

Our Private Tour Design Process

From the initial enquiry our tour designer will gleam all the essential information needed for building your dream tour of Ireland. Essential information includes:

• The number of days and approximate travel dates.
• Interests and hobbies. For example, golf, whiskey, castles, history, boat trips, wildlife.
• Accommodation requests: Would you prefer 4 or 5 Star hotels.
• Preferred Room Arrangements.
• Dining and meal requirements.

Your designated tour designer will then draw up a draft itinerary which will be sent for your review within 24 hours. From there you can liaise with your tour designer, making as many changes as necessary to the draft itinerary. Once the final itinerary is complete and we have your dream luxury tour mapped out, our team will request an initial deposit. From there our team will immediately book accommodation, organise a friendly chauffeur guide and reserve any restaurant tables.

When is the best time to visit ireland.

To catch the best weather we suggest visiting from April to September. Spring and Summer in Ireland bring the highest temperatures and the lowest amount of rain fall. There is numerous festivals that range from music to poetry at this time of year. Summer is the ideal time to deep dive into Irish culture.

Currently booking flights is not part of our service, however we are happy to advise on flight times and routes. Once you touch down in Ireland, we take control of every aspect of your tour.

Are Meals Included?

Breakfast included at all hotels. Our tour itineraries also have recommendations for lunch and dinner but unless requested lunch and dinners are not included in the cost.

What Are The Rules When Tipping In Ireland?

On a trip to Ireland last week, we used the services of Executive Hire. Our driver, Adrian “Hoppy” Hopkins was the best! He is very accommodating and a true gentleman. Hoppy’s vast knowledge of Ireland was evident during our tour; we visited many places during our stay in Limerick and learned so much! After Limerick, Hoppy drove us to Dublin and gave us a tour of the City before dropping us off at our hotel. I highly recommend using Executive Hire. The service was beyond anything I expected. When I return to Ireland, I will be sure to engage their services again and will request Hoppy as our driver!!!!

First off, Mike was a pleasure to deal with. He responded quickly to every email and wrote out an ititnirary for our first trip to Ireland. He included sightseeing, hotel and dining suggestions that we could pick and choose from, to suit our needs. After a long day of travel from Boston to Ireland we we greeted with a warm welcome and hug from Adrian “Hoppy” Hopkins. Hoppy was a pleasure from start to finish. Always prompt and professional and very knowledgable of all the history and culture of Ireland. He really gave us an insiders tour that we would not have gotten on our own. He insisted that we call him for anything we might need, day or night, ever on the days we were not touring with him. Our last night in Dublin we had a different driver, Derek who was also prompt and pleasant even at the ungodly hour of picking us up at 4:30 a.m. to get to the airport. Wow! Cannot express our gratitude in words for the royal treatment we received every minute of every day or evening with Executive Hire. Mike Ryan planned our trip with our input and his knowledge of his country with exquisite detail to match our desires. Then we met our driver Alfie, who made every second in Ireland count and all in the laps of luxury with a true Irish gentleman who shared the beauty and memory making experiences with us beyond our itinerary. We had the honor of seeing more than we anticipated as every morning Alfie would tell us about places we would be driving by to see if we wanted to stop. At one point we missed seeing the sheep dog demonstration (our mistake not Alfie’s) a few days later he surprised us with another demonstration in the Buren. We were treated like princesses and it took my 30 year old daughter about a day to allow Alfie to open doors and escort her across roads. Mom had no problem enjoying this treatment from the first moment. Now Kelly will be looking for a true gentleman. Alfie raised the bar for her. My husband sends his many thanks and best regards to Alfie for keeping his girls so safe and watching over us the entire time. If you are considering Executive Hire please book. 3 Day Tour of Ireland

We had a great trip to Ireland thanks to Hoppy. He is an amazing guide who has a lot of knowledge and a great sense of humor. He had quite a few off-the-beaten-path stops that we would have never found on our own. His restaurant recommendations were all great. I would highly recommend him.

OUR TOUR OF SOUTH-WEST IRELAND

We were extremely impressed with Alfie Earls, our driver and extra-ordinary tour guide. On a scale of 1 – 5, Alfie ‘absolutely’ rates a five. Alfie was able to anticipate and accommodate the interests and wishes of four octogenarians and a daughter. He was always on time, and everyone felt safe while traveling in an immaculately clean vehicle. Finding the heart of Ireland

Mike Ryan worked hand in hand with us in creating our two week magnificent tour of Ireland. Patrick O’Brien our driver picked us up at the end of our Dublin stay and helped us discover the heart and soul of Ireland. The beautiful automobile we traveled in made it even better. Patrick in real time, juggled the trip so we could have some critical down time in Galway. Without us asking. He also sensed our primary interests and focused on them. The Best Way to Tour Ireland

This was my 2nd experience with the Mike Ryan Tour Group. They did not disappoint us. Patrick our driver was awesome. Very accommodating. The trip was well planned. They set us up in great hotels – the Savoy on Limerick, Actons in Kinsales, the Plaza in Killarney and the Dunraven in Adare. The golf was spectacular too. We visited Lahinch, Old Head, Dooks and Tralee. Great tracks and great caddies. No Irish visit is complete without a stop at the Jameson Distillery in Midleton. Fantastic time. Thank you Mike. The first trip was 8 guys and all golf. The 2nd was 4 couples with golf and tourist stops. A great time was had by all.

Lost and Found Tour – Shannon to Dublin, two 50+ couples from USA on an 7 day cross country adventure

Bucket list trip to Ireland with long time friends of ours. We had a blast. Have never done the personal tour guide options before and would highly recommend it. Mike Ryan, the owner of the company was very agreeable to work with. Most of our communications back and forth was via e-mail. He was very responsive to our many questions and needs. Even available via cell during our trip. We were able to tell Mike our interests, wants and needs and, together, we created a very personal itinerary that you could never get on your standardized bus tour. Brendan “The Navigator”, our tour guide was great. Always on time, always where he said he would be when he said he would be there. Brendan seemed very local and very well know by everyone. He was always negotiating better service, better prices and/or better experiences for us at every stop. He always seemed to have his own parking space wherever we went. Having our own tour guide in a very comfortable van allowed us to go places that larger tour buses were not allowed to drive. Brendan could flex our schedules as to avoid the usually six tour buses carrying 500 people descending upon the locals in a horde. He knew what we wanted to see and do, but also took time for valued added stops and adventures that we could have had no idea existed prior to being there.

Amazing time

Our trip was truly amazing. Mike helped us create an itinerary that took us to all the best of Ireland and incorporated some destinations with personal significance. Our driver, Alfie, was wonderful. From the minute he met us at the airport, Alfie was accommodating, and went out of his way to make this a truly special experience. Alfie knew how to find out information, who to talk to, and where to inquire to assist us in researching some family history. His assistance was priceless and unforgettable. Further, Alfie gave us suggestions about sights and experiences that were off the beaten, but right up our alley. He was never wrong! I utilized Executive Hire Chauffeur Service, owned by Mike Ryan, with my group of 8 friends from June 14th until June 22nd. Our driver was Mr. Alfie Earls(pictured with me below). He was FANTASTIC. He supplied our every need while he drove the 10 passenger Mercedes Sprinter van expertly. He is professional, personal, quick thinking, entertaining, and was very adaptable to our ever-changing itinerary. I highly recommend this company for anyone who wants to tour Ireland.

Never a dull moment

Our driver, Alfie was incredibly attentive and wonderful! We travelled with my in-laws who have limited mobility but he made sure that we still got the full experience. Tour itinerary

Day 1 - arrive dublin - trinity college.

Arrive at Dublin Airport, proceed through immigration and pick up your baggage. Go to the Arrivals Hall where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. As you will be unlikely to be able to check in to the hotel until after 2pm, drop your luggage at a secure storage facility at the hotel and visit Trinity College's Geology Museum & Library. A member of the faculty will give a short introduction to the College’s objectives and Ireland’s major sites, many of which will be visited during your stay, weather permitting. Back to your hotel to check in. Dinner tonight is not included in the tour, so why not try one of Dublin’s superb restaurants followed by an evening’s entertainment in one of the many entertaining pubs. Overnight Dublin. BB

Day 2 - University College Dublin – School of Geological Science and Dublinia

After breakfast, a visit to University College Dublin School of Geological Science has been arranged. Continue to Dublinia and the Viking World, where exhibitions display Dublin in Viking & Medieval times. After all this “culture” a visit to the Old Jameson Distillery to learn about the making of Irish Whiskey will be a welcome respite. Overnight Dublin DBB

Day 3 - Loughcrew Cairns, Four Knocks, National Museum

This morning, visit Loughcrew Megalithic Cairns and Four Knocks Megalithic Passage Tomb. In the afternoon, return to Dublin tosee the National Museum – Archeology to view their current exhibition. Overnight Dublin DBB

Day 4 - Boyne Valley, Belfast

Today we leave Dublin to discover the historic and archeological treasures of the Boyne Valley, first visiting the ancient Celtic site of the Hill of Tara, then Trim and Kells Heritage Towns. Trim’s 12th Century Castle featured in the film Braveheart and Kells is famous for its 8th Century monastic settlement, Book of Kells and Celtic High Crosses. We will also visit the 5000 years old Megalithic tombs at Newgrange and/or Knowth. Onwards to Belfast. Overnight Belfast DBB

Day 5 - Giants Causeway, Derry

We depart for one of Europe’s most magnificent coastlines where its unique rock formations have, for millions of years, stood as a natural rampart against the unbridled ferocity of Atlantic storms – The Giant's Causeway. A guided walking tour has been arranged. After the visit, travel on to Derry where, after checking in to your hotel, you will take an inner city guided walking tour. Overnight Derry DBB

Day 6 - Marble Arch, Arigna

After breakfast, travel south to visit Marble Arch Caves, European Geopark, one of Europe’s finest showcaves. Your knowledgeable guide will take you through a bewildering variety of cave formations. Following your visit, continue on to the Arigna Mining Experience. This energy center will provide you with a unique insight into what coal mining life was like in the Arigna Valley, since its beginning in the 1700's until closure in 1990. Local geology and the formation of coal deposits are explained in the exhibition area and you will be able to experience what it was like to work in some of the narrowest coal seams in the western world. Day 7 - Cong

A leisurely morning to revitalize the senses. Stay around the hotel or visit the Clew Bay Heritage Centre to learn more about this Georgian town. Then depart for Galway travelling via Cong, the site of many scenes from the classic 1952 movie The Quiet Man. Overnight Galway DBB

Day 8 - Connemara

Tour around the stunning Connemara region today with its unspoilt scenery. Along the way visit Kylemore Abbey with its lovely walled gardens and Connemara Marble Visitors Centre before returning to Galway City. The remainder of the day is free. The Quays area in the city is home to a number of lively music pubs including the popular Quays Bar and great choice of restaurants. Overnight Galway. BB

Day 9 - The Burren, Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty

Today, visit the Burren, a karst limestone region of approximately 300 sq km which lies in the north west corner of Co Clare, composed of limestone pavements, which are eroded in a distinctive pattern known as karren. Two stops will be made, at Aillwee Caves and Caherconnell Stone Fort. Continue on to the Cliffs of Moher which rise up to 214 metres above the Atlantic Ocean. Here visit Doolin Cave before travelling on to Ireland’s third city, Limerick. After checking in to your hotel, take the short drive to Bunratty Castle for an evening of fun at the Bunratty Medieval Banquet & Show. Overnight Limerick BB

Day 10 - Cragg Cave, Killarney

Leave Limerick in the morning traveling through what is known as Ireland’s prettiest village, Adare and onwards into County Kerry to Cragg Caves. After visiting Cragg, continue to Killarney and visit the National Park or walk through the Gap Of Dunloe. Killarney has many pubs and restaurants and is one of Ireland’s most popular tourist destinations. Overnight Killarney BB

Day 11 - Dingle Peninsula

Today we will tour the spectacular Dingle Peninsula. Perhaps not as well known as the Ivergah Peninsula where the Ring of Kerry is located, the Dingle Peninsula is less busy but every bit as beautiful. The town of Dingle is a small fishing port where you will find plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants to have lunch. Then to the west of the town the scenery is particularly rugged with views out to the formerly inhabited Blasket Islands. Visit the Blaskett Centre which documents the islands until they were vacated in 1953. Day 12 - Blarney, Cashel

This morning, travel to Blarney where, at Blarney Castle, you may kiss the stone which according to legend will give you the “gift of eloquence”. Onwards to Cashel for lunch (not included) at Bru Boru, a national cultural centre at the foot of the Rock of Cashel. Time for class discussion over lunch. Overnight Kilkenny DBB

Day 13 - Dunmore Caves, Wicklow

After breakfast, visit Dunmore Caves, mentioned in the annals which tells of a Viking massacre at the cave in the year 928 A.D. After the visit we head back to Dublin via Wicklow, visiting Wicklow Gaol, reputedly one of the most haunted places in Ireland. Overnight Dublin DBB

Day 14 - Guinness Storehouse

After all the educational sights visited, time for a bit of R & R. A visit to Guinness Storehouse is something that no visitor should miss, especially the finale, a complimentary pint in their 7th floor Gravity Bar, which has 360 degree panoramic views of the city. The rest of the day is free for last minute shopping or sightseeing. . The day will conclude with a night of entertainment at one of Dublin’s best traditional music evenings, the Irish House Party. As well as experiencing the great music and dance on offer, the group can even join in and learn a jig or two on stage in this fun and casual evening. Overnight Dublin BB

Day 15 - Departure from Dublin

Transfer to Dublin Airport in time to check in for your flight home and that last minute duty free shopping.
