All Things Cruise

That’s the Spirit! ~Sea Cloud Cruises’ Sea Cloud Spirit Brightens the Gloomiest Skies

It seems that so many of the things I love originated in Europe: my favorite music, cuisine, literature, art and, now, thanks to Sea Cloud Spirit, one of my favorite ships.

On my recent seven-day cruise, even a significant number of rainy, windy and downright cold days couldn’t dampen guests’ Sea Cloud spirit as we sailed from Portsmouth, England, to Dublin, Ireland.

A Small Ship…With Everything You Need:

Sea Cloud Spirit’s public spaces are the epitome of casual elegance. Despite her diminutive size–4,228 gross tons–she incorporates

many of the bells and whistles of larger ships while adding experiences that are uniquely her own.

Launched in 2021, the all-inclusive, 136-passenger, three-mast Sea Cloud Spirit is the latest in the trio of windjammers from Sea Cloud Cruises, a Hamburg, Germany-based company that is beginning to make a splash in the U.S.A. Best known for the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 as the private yacht of millionaire heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and still sailing today, Sea Cloud Cruises hopes that, by year’s end, 40% of its guests will hail from America.

Beginning January 2025, in fact, Sea Cloud Spirit comes to America’s backyard, home porting for the first time in sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she will launch an ambitious culinary program that showcases some of Puerto Rico’s most celebrated chefs.

And while this is, indeed, a tempting lure for travelers, American and otherwise, I suspect that the greatest enticement is Sea Cloud Spirit, herself, and that vision of 28 billowing sails soaring 200 feet above a lavishly appointed yacht that combines old-world elegance with today’s most contemporary technology. Sea Cloud Spirit is not the only windjammer sailing the seven seas, but she and the ships of Sea Cloud are the only ones to set sails by hand as they were centuries ago. Who needs production shows, a swimming pool or casino when you can stand on the open decks and marvel as 18 deckhands scurry up the masts to unfurl the dazzling 44,100 square feet of white canvas sails?

And now, Sea Cloud Spirit guests can get a taste of what it is like to climb those masts just as the deckhands do. Recently introduced aboard Sea Cloud Spirit is “Hit the Rig!” a program that allows sailor wannabes to climb aloft once they have passed a physical assessment by the ship’s doctor and first mate. One of those who “Hit the Rig” on my cruise was 86 years old!

For those with a fear of heights but a love of photography, Sea Cloud Spirit offers the Photo Safari, an opportunity for guests to board a zodiac and circle the ship while its sails are majestically unfurled. Talk about a photo op! (This story’s lead photo is not a professional shot, but one I captured on my four-year-old iPhone during my cruise’s Photo Safari.)

With its fascinating maritime history, a D-Day Museum, Charles Dickens’ home and a riot of shopping, restaurants and the spectacular Spinnaker Tower offering 23-mile views from its top (and, for the more adventurous, an opportunity to actually abseil down the landmark), Portsmouth just might be my favorite cruise embarkation point of all.

The Portsmouth Passenger Terminal Dock is just minutes away from my Gunwharf Quays hotel and I arrive there to find Sea Cloud’s designated entrance devoid of the crowds and queues so common to cruising these days. Ours is the only ship sailing today so, after accepting a flute of champagne, I simply board Sea Cloud Spirit and proceed to my stateroom.

Joining me on this “Britain in Bloom” voyage are 98 other guests, 73 from Germany, and the balance primarily from the United States, many associated with Stanford Travel/Study, an education-based travel organization which has sailed Sea Cloud ships since the line was formed in 1979.

Sea Cloud Spirit Accommodations…Fit for an Heiress:

You might say Sea Cloud Spirit’s staterooms and suites are the gold standard. Literally. This ship is inspired by the original Sea Cloud and, as such, its signature brass fittings sparkle with opulence–even the bowl-style bathroom sink in each of the ship’s lavish suites is a brilliant golden vision. The 69 staterooms aboard Sea Cloud Spirit range from a cozy 140 square-foot superior single to a 301 square-foot verandah suite though all Deck 3 accommodations include verandahs. And while the atmosphere harkens back to another glorious time, there is no question that this is modern luxury thanks to a sophisticated TV with entertainment system, a stocked in-room refrigerator, a free gigabyte of Wi-Fi and a shower with water pressure so powerful, I nearly got whiplash. Bathrobes, hair dryer, coffee makers and a bottle of Pommery champagne, its bottle etched with an illustration of Sea Cloud Spirit, are standard in all staterooms and suites.

Sea Cloud Spirit’s public spaces are the epitome of casual elegance. Despite her diminutive size–4,228 gross tons–she incorporates many of the bells and whistles of larger ships while adding experiences that are uniquely her own.

A surprisingly well-equipped spa is tucked away on Cabin Deck, offering steam, Finnish sauna, foot bath and treatment rooms, while a boutique offering branded merchandise is situated right next door. Also on Lido Deck is the ship’s sports platform, your entry into the sea when weather permits, either for a swim or to lounge atop one of the floating deck chairs offered. Need a work out? Visit the Sun Deck to find Sea Cloud Spirit’s ocean-view fitness area with bikes, weights and treadmills. A charming library, stocked with books in both English and German, is located forward on Lido deck.

On our sailing, lectures were conducted daily, both in English and German, in the lovely Lounge (a woefully underused space if you ask me) with topics largely related to our U.K. itinerary, from Stonehenge, the Romans and King Arthur to an exploration of Cornwall and its impact on mystery writers like Agatha Christie. The Lounge is also where soccer fans assembled in the evening to view European Cup matches streamed to the room’s wide screen TV.

On mild evenings—we only had one of those—the Lido comes alive with dancing, all requests honored by the accommodating disc jockey while those with two left feet are more than happy to huddle at the Lido Bar, sipping a libation, chatting with shipmates and the charming bar staff and absorbing the spectacular ocean views.

A Taste of Sea Cloud Spirit:

We glimpse the ocean through oval leaded windows, gold-trimmed sconces and chandeliers casting an amber glow over the golden-framed nautical paintings and the room’s formally set tables. This is Sea Cloud Spirit’s Restaurant, a tasteful and stylish space where a full breakfast buffet is offered each morning and where the Captain’s Gala Welcome and Farewell dinners are staged. During inclement weather, dinner and lunch buffets are also served here, live cooking stations supplementing the buffet offerings.

But it is the nautical vibe of Lido Deck dining that most guests prefer. At this covered al fresco restaurant you will find tables set with china, glass and silver and, at its entrance, a full bar perfect for socializing. Here there is no question: We are on a sailing ship, the vast ocean surrounding us and those magnificent sails an upward glance away.

With Sea Cloud Spirit’s German roots, it is not surprising that culinary offerings lean toward European tastes (and, in a nod to the ship’s home country, delicious freshly baked pretzels appear in every bread and pastry display). Instead of sandwiches, pizza or frequent ethnic selections like Mexican, Asian or Indian (although a delectable selection of sushi was offered one evening), there’s an emphasis on rich soups, roasted meats like barbecued chicken and full roasted pig, hearty cuts of beef and the freshest seafood, usually fileted and grilled right in front of you. Vegetarians have their own option at each meal and several popular dishes like chicken breast, pasta arrabiata and Caesar salad are always available.

Charting a New Course:

From sunny Portsmouth, storms pelt Sea Cloud Spirit’s route. Calls at Guernsey and Tresco are cancelled in favor of the better-protected Cowes and Falmouth….which end up being my favorite ports of call!

In Cowes, Sea Cloud Spirit scurries to locate a dual-language tour guide and succeeds, resulting in an enlightening walking tour that includes a visit to the Sir Max Aitken Museum, a magnificent 18th Century building stuffed with Sir Max’s personal collection of historical and nautical artifacts.

And we really hit the jackpot in Falmouth, arriving under glorious sunshine to discover the town’s annual Sea Shanty Festival in full swing. Free concerts are everywhere from cozy pubs to street corners and squares and it seems I am the only one not dressed as a pirate!

Sea Cloud Spirit’s “Britain in Bloom” sailing may have been dealt some unfortunate weather but, thanks to this stunning, truly unique ship, her superb service, fine dining and an intelligent course adjustment to avoid possibly worse weather, guests barely seemed to notice.

Aboard a Hand-Sailed Cruise Ship From Malaga to Lisbon

Seacloud Spirit Cruise

I reach the spot at the port where Sea Cloud Spirit is waiting for her voyage and find a crowd gathered. It’s understandable; the gleaming white windjammer, with her three huge masted sails, looks nothing like any of the other ships docked. At 450 feet long, tailing off into a gold-accented bow, with 4,951 square feet of sail curled and ready for release, watching the ship come into view is a wow-factor moment. I feel like I’ve taken a step back in time, unsure whether I feel more like a pirate or some sort of royal of yore. Either way, I’ve never set foot on a ship as impressive as this.

Sea Cloud Spirit is the newest in Sea Cloud Cruises’ fleet—a name that made an appearance on our Reader Choice Awards last year. With its trio of windjammers, setting sail on one of its handsome ships is a novel experience of the most sophisticated kind. It’s basically the floating version of taking a steam train through the countryside , evoking a romanticized bygone era where everyone sets off, bravely, to find adventure on unexplored lands.

That’s essentially what the original Sea Cloud , a now 90-year-old four-masted beauty, did. Once the largest private sailing yacht in the world, it was first commissioned under the name Hussar by Wall Street broker Edward Francis in 1931, who gave his glamorous cereal heiress wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, a limitless budget to decorate its interior. She took on this role with gusto, furnishing it with a wealth of distinctive antiques and a characterful design, much of which you’ll still find inside today. Together they remained at sea for at least nine months a year, heading from one exotic destination to the next.

Seacloud Spirit Cruise

On board, there's a large sun deck for lounging in the sun.

But all good things come to an end and the couple divorced in 1935. Marjorie became the sole owner, renamed it Sea Cloud and married a man who’d go on to become the US ambassador in Moscow. The ship thus went on to fulfill a number of political roles, including a stint in Leningrad as a floating diplomatic palace and use as a floating weather station during World War II, when its majestic masts were sadly demounted. After the war ended, a four-year refurbishment saw it restored to former glory and it now serves as the flagship for Sea Cloud Cruises alongside two newer ships, each honoring the traditional seamanship and style of the original.

You won’t find any of Majorie’s antiques on Sea Cloud Spirit . But what the boat lacks in wartime stories to tell, it makes up for in luxuriousness. It’s much larger than the original, with a shining mahogany body and whitewashed exterior, space for 136 guests and 90 crew, glorious double bedrooms with balconies, a large sun deck, indoor and outdoor dining spaces, and a spa with gym.

Seacloud Spirit Cruise

The cabins are surprisingly roomy and tastefully nautical.

I step on board and am shown to my room by friendly host José, who is possibly one of the smiliest people I’ve ever met, and all too willing to help with anything I need. The cabins are striking and surprisingly roomy with plush double beds, suitably nautical artwork, smart carpets and spacious balconies replete with loungers. I especially love the bathrooms, with their shiny taps and statement golden sinks, L’Occitane hair and body products ,and plenty of big fluffy towels.

I help myself to a glass of Champagne from the bottle on the coffee table and ready myself to set sail to distant lands (in this instance, Malaga to Cádiz, and then off to Lisbon ), before heading out to the Lido Deck bar. This is one of the best spots on the boat. Throughout the four days you get to know the staff, and bar manager Anton is one of the cheeriest. He’s an old hand, having worked for Sea Cloud for over a decade, greeting you by name every time and even querying where one of our party was when the seasickness proved too much one evening. Ask him about his Martini tastings—it’s a good way to spend an hour.

There’s plenty of seating on the Lido Deck and having an outside dining spot, something the original ship lacks, means mealtimes with a view and a breath of salty air. The buffet changes daily, with a wealth of salads, quiches, fish, chicken, steaks, and pastas prepared freshly in front of your eyes. It’s a treat watching the chefs work; a highlight was witnessing a giant tuna arrive whole on two men’s shoulders, an apple tucked inside its huge mouth, before sashimi and steaks were expertly whittled out one by one and served up with shavings of fresh wasabi. The inaugural gala dinner in the main dining room provides an opportunity to get dressed up; plates unveiled with a flourish from under a dome and a Champagne top-up never too far away.

The Oldest Country in the World Is This Microstate Tucked Inside Italy

There's no shortage of space to sunbathe on the top deck.

Casting off any comparisons with mega cruise ships, the entertainment on Sea Cloud Spirit all pays homage to a life at sea. On one particularly nice day, we all scrambled onto the lifeboat dinghies to circle the ship in her full glory. A few members of our party got to scale the ropes up to the masts—admittedly, I was jealous when I was not selected for this—and in the evening a handful of staff, including our lovely José, sang sea shanties on the deck.

But the most exciting event is the releasing of the sails. Every morning I headed up to the top deck, pushing open the doors to bobbing seas and blue skies, to watch the sailors work. In my mind, I imagined them billowing down within seconds, like something out of a Pirates of the Caribbean film, unfurling with a flourish before the ship steams off into the distance—but I was wrong.

It’s a long process, with over 10 people diligently winding and unwinding the ropes up in the sails and on the deck, working in tandem to release each individual part of the sail, until they are all finally free. Watching this, I felt like I’d learned something, and that went double after a tour of the engine room and ‘the bridge’, aka the ship’s control centre. Where possible, the boat utilizes wind power from the sails, but an average of 80 tonnes of fuel is used for every four-day trip.

Seacloud Spirit Cruise

The ship is approximately 450 feet, with nearly 5,000 square feet of sail.

There are multiple bookable excursions for days on land, including a variety of food and boozy tastings, and guided tours via foot, e-bike and tuk-tuk. We were shown around pretty Cádiz , culminating in a stop off at a local tapas restaurant for a taste of the local delicacies. This city is famous for its orange trees, which compete with the blossoms to fill the roadsides with brilliant flashes of color. It's from here that Chanel sources the fruit for its fragrances. “People in Cádiz say that when they’ve met the right romantic match, they’ve found the other half of their orange,” says our guide.

In Lisbon, we sidestepped the need to traverse the steep hillsides on foot by shuttling up to the best miradouros (viewpoints, to you and me) by tuk-tuk, then off to a Portuguese wine tasting at a very chic Art Deco museum-come-wine bar. Grazing on olives, cured hams and cheese while an expert talked us through various Portuguese wines was another highlight of the trip.

But as wonderful as days spent exploring can be, the real draw in this instance is the ship itself. Seeing the sun dip below the sea in the evenings while hanging over the railings, watching dolphins leap out of the water from the cabin balcony, the sound of the waves lulling me to sleep—these are my overriding memories from the trip. Even a brief bout of seasickness didn’t spoil the fun (although it certainly gave me some learnings for next time).

Usually the journeying part of traveling is tedious—even the chicest business class cabin feels oppressive after 14 hours—but the time on shore wasn’t half as exciting as that spent on board. I disembarked in Lisbon with a renewed appreciation for what it must have taken to set sail way back when; and a reminder that the journey itself is as important as the destination, in one of the loveliest ways possible.

Welche Kreuzfahrt-Reedereien gibt es? Liste aller Anbieter

Hamburg..

7. AIDA Cruises

Marktanteil : 5,4 Prozent
