Karli and bri.

Joining Travel Guides on the road for the first time are Karly and Bri, two besties who met while filming  Beauty and the Geek  for Nine a couple of years ago and have been inseparable ever since.

“We were roommates on the show, so we had no choice but to be friends,” Bri told our sister site TV WEEK. “We were like the love story from  Beauty And The Geek … we walked out best of friends.”

“We bring a different dynamic to the show, and I think people will be pleasantly surprised by us. We might look a certain way on the outside – we like to dress up and look nice – but we also give everything a crack. We are tomboys at heart.”

Matt and Brett

Bona fide travel addicts Matt and Brett joined the show in season four, hailing from Newcastle in New South Wales.

The married couple, who have been together for 20 years now, describe themselves as ‘high-end travellers’ who also love a bargain.

While Matt is organised, and packs his outfits into plastic bags via the suitcase, Brett is much happier going along for the ride, leading to a delightful Bert-and-Ernie energy that makes for great TV.

They’re also hilarious, giving biting commentary, and always making the audience laugh.

The Fren Family

The delightful Fren family have been regulars since season one, bringing immediate joy to the show with their upbeat nature.

Dad Mark is upbeat and forthright, with a knack for negotiating room upgrades. He’s been married to his wife Cathy for over 30 years, and their two kids, Victoria and Jonathan, are always along for the journey.

Their family grew in 2023, with Jonathan marrying his long-term partner, Danielle Clarke.

Other members of the Travel Guides cast Matt, Brett, Kevin, Janetta, Mel, and Stack were all in attendance – too cute!

kevin-janetta-travel-guides

Kevin and Janetta

‘Holiday snobs’ Kevin and Janetta always bring the laughs.

The pair, who are in their 60s, are passionate wine enthusiasts and seasoned travellers. They’re also avid researchers when it comes to their holidays, making sure they have the best possible experience, so being thrown into strange situations on the show always makes for a good laugh.

They also won’t hesitate to ask for the manager, which has earned them the catchphrase, “We don’t suffer in silence”.

New to the block are Matt and Brett, who have been together for 18 years and married for seven.

Matt, 45, works for the local council while Brett, 51, is a primary school teacher, and the two love to travel – meaning they have a lot of opinions on how holidays should be.

The difference between the two is that while Matt loves to organise everything, do everything and eat out for every meal, Brett is happy to go along for the ride.

They are quick with biting commentary on everything around them but are generous, kind and love a laugh.

travel guides fren family

Fren family

The Frens are well equipped to cope with stressful family situations and can always find the funny side of any holiday disaster.

Mark, 59, is the upbeat and forthright dad, so when on holiday he loves to negotiate hotel room upgrades.

For more than 30 years he has been happily married to Cathy, 57, whose quirky sense of humour and distinctive laugh is contagious.

Together they have two kids, Victoria, 27, who is always ready to voice an opinion, and Jonathon, 29, who is the more reserved one of the bunch.

The Frens are unafraid to give anything a go, which often leads them into unpredictable situations.

travel guides kev dorian teng

Kev, Dorian, and Teng

This trio, made up of Kev, Dorian and Teng, are all good mates who share a love of junk food, computer games, music and movies.

Kev, 28, is the sensible pop-culture expert with an arts degree, while Dorian, 24, is laidback, polite and studying to become a teacher.

As for Teng, 25, he’s the risk-taker who has deferred uni for the last three years and is always looking for a good time.

All are Australian-born and their combined Chinese, Greek and Vietnamese heritage gives them a unique take on the world.

Despite Dorian’s Greek heritage, they often refer to themselves as “the three Asian boys” who are fearless and willing to give anything a go.

travel guides kevin janetta

Kevin and Janetta

Kevin, 63, and Janetta, 69, describe themselves as ‘holiday snobs’, as they want the best of the best for everything.

The pair, who have been married for over three decades, don’t have children, and are passionate wine enthusiasts.

They also love exploring big cities, but before hitting the road, they make sure they do their research to ensure they experience the best holiday.

And if the quality or service isn’t up to scratch they will not hesitate to make a complaint – earning them the “we don’t suffer in silence” catchphrase.

travel guides stack mel

Stack and Mel

Identical twin cowgirls, Stack and Mel, are still relatively new to the travel game, and are a little wary when venturing anywhere beyond the Outback. Even so, they are willing to give anything a crack.

The girls, 31, are big on the rodeo scene, competing together and against each other in roping events. They have travelled extensively around country Australia for competitions.

Having spent most of their lives in the bush, they are blissfully unaware of other cultures, languages and customs – but this doesn’t stop them voicing an opinion.

They are used to roughing it and are not easily impressed by fancy holidays, and would much rather camp outdoors with their horses and dogs rather than stay in the city.

Steves, 69, said his doctors told him there is “no sign of it having spread.”

“There is a clear path forward to getting healthy, and this fall, I’ll be in the hospital for a few days to have prostate surgery,” Steves wrote in a post to X .

“I’m looking forward to many more years of happy travels, exciting collaborations, and beautiful friendships,” Steves said. “Thank you for your love and support (and any ‘travel tips’ you may have for me as I set off on this journey).”

In addition to “Rick Steves’ Europe,” Steves is a writer and author of his own travel blog , as well as and host of radio show “Travel with Rick Steves.”

TV travel guide Rick Steves reveals he has prostate cancer

Travel guide Rick Steves speaks during an interview in 2014.

Popular television travel guide Rick Steves has revealed he has prostate cancer.

The 69-year-old shared the news in a post on Facebook , but seemed optimistic about his prognosis.

“I’d like to take a moment to share some important news. I have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. My doctor assures me that, if you’re going to get cancer, this is a good kind to get, and careful scans show no sign of it having spread,” Steves said. “There is a clear path forward to getting healthy, and this fall, I’ll be in the hospital for a few days having prostate surgery.”

Steves said his doctor took no issue with him filming two new television shows in France over the next three weeks. He will then return to his home in Edmonds, Washington.

Steves said he will likely undergo surgery in late September and spend about a month recovering.

“God willing, [I’ll] be cancer-free and back at it by the end of October,” Steves said.

The travel host will receive treatment at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, and said he has great trust in his doctor and the facility.

Amid his diagnosis, Steves said he is not taking things for granted.

"I feel good about my positive attitude — and I expect to take home some delightful, if intangible, souvenirs like: appreciating and seeing a vibrancy in the little things; appreciating the goodness in people and the treasure of friends and family; being wowed by modern medicine and the army of amazing, smart, and dedicated people that make it possible; appreciating what a blessing life, health, and this world to enjoy is; and — just in general — being more thankful,” said Steves.

“I’m looking forward to many more years of happy travels, exciting collaborations, and beautiful friendships. Thank you for your love and support (and any 'travel tips' you may have for me as I set off on this journey),” he wrote.

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is a disease affecting the male reproductive system in which the cells of the prostate grow out of control, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

The prostate is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum.

While most men with prostate cancer don’t notice any symptoms, they may experience difficulty starting urination, weak flow of urine, frequent urination, pain while urinating, painful ejaculation, or pain in the back, hips, or pelvis that doesn’t go away, the CDC says. But other conditions can also cause these symptoms.

The main way to diagnose prostate cancer is with a biopsy, the CDC says. After a positive diagnosis, further testing determines if cancer cells have spread within the prostate or to other parts of the body.

Screenings through blood tests can also help detect prostate cancer before symptoms appear.

The greatest risk factor for prostate cancer is age, says the CDC. The older the man, the higher his chances of developing the disease. African American men are also more likely than other men to get prostate cancer.

About 13 out of every 100 men will get prostate cancer during their lifetime, and about 2 to 3 will die from it, according to the CDC.

Rick Steves, TV Travel Guide, Says He Has Prostate Cancer

Mr. Steves said the cancer had not spread and he will travel to France for work before having surgery next month.

A man wearing a blazer and jeans sits on steps.

By John Yoon

Rick Steves, a travel writer who has built an empire of guidebooks, radio shows and television programs that focus on Europe, said on Wednesday that he had recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Mr. Steves, 69, has written dozens of guidebooks over four decades and hosted programs like “ Rick Steves’ Europe ,” a series that began in 2000 and has now aired for 12 seasons on public television in the United States. He also hosts a radio show and podcast called “ Travel with Rick Steves .” He announced the diagnosis in a social media post on Wednesday.

He said, in an interview from his home in Seattle on Wednesday, that his years of travel had taught him to seek experiences that broaden his perspectives, including culture shock, and his cancer diagnosis was not very different.

“You learn a lot more about your home sometimes by leaving it and looking at it from a distance,” he said by phone.

“When you’re having a trip, it’s leaving your comfort zone, it’s leaving your home — and for me, a hospital is a very foreign place,” he added. “The experience is, I’m meeting wonderful people, I’m gaining an appreciation of things I wouldn’t have gained otherwise, and I’m being reminded of what’s important in life.”

Mr. Steves said that he had received the diagnosis a few weeks ago after his new doctor suggested he take a blood test. Even though he was not having any symptoms, he agreed, making a decision that he said his doctor would later say saved his life.

“It’s much better to check things in advance than to find out about them when it’s too late,” he said.

Scans showed the cancer had not spread, so he had a clear path to recovery. But he said it had led to an uncomfortable yet novel experience, forcing him to confront the fragility of health. Prostate cancer is a fairly common cancer in men and is the second leading cause of cancer death among American men. But the disease usually progresses slowly.

“Statistically, all the odds are in my favor,” he said. “But I’m going into it with eyes open — I mean, I’ve got cancer. That’s a serious thing.”

After the diagnosis, he said, he gained a new appreciation for modern medicine and medical technologies. He also said he encountered the strains on the health care system and the unequal ways cancer can upend lives among those who cannot pay for treatment.

“It should not be just something that privileged people can do,” he said.

Until his surgery late September in Seattle, Mr. Steves plans to be in France for a few weeks to film a one-hour special about sights in Paris and a half-hour show about the cuisine and barges of Burgundy. He is also scheduled to appear with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra in Cincinnati.

“And then I’m going to go get the surgery,” he said, “and I’ll be shuffling around in my home in my pajamas for a couple of weeks.”

TV travel guide Rick Steves announces he has prostate cancer

Rick Steves portrait

TV travel guide Rick Steves announced Wednesday that he has cancer, saying on social media that he expects to emerge from the saga all the more grateful and wise.

He said he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will undergo surgery at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center-Seattle next month, but not before he films two episodes of his PBS mainstay "Rick Steves' Europe" in France in the next three weeks.

Afterward, he plans to return for the procedure, rest for a month and be back to his work routine by late October, according to his announcement, posted to Facebook , X and Instagram .

He explained why he doesn't seem too worried about the diagnosis:

"While the statistics tell me I should be just fine, I’ve been fortunate to have never spent a night in a hospital — and I find myself going into this adventure almost like it’s some amazing, really important trip. I feel good about my positive attitude — and I expect to take home some delightful, if intangible, souvenirs like: appreciating and seeing a vibrancy in the little things; appreciating the goodness in people and the treasure of friends and family; being wowed by modern medicine and the army of amazing, smart, and dedicated people that make it possible; appreciating what a blessing life, health, and this world to enjoy is; and — just in general — being more thankful."

Steves is an industry based in Edmonds, Washington, near Seattle, though he spends a third of every year in Europe creating new content and honing the PBS show, printed guides and guided tours that make up his enterprise. He also guides visitors with his “Travel with Rick Steves” radio show, available via public radio airwaves and through commercial radio juggernaut iHeartRadio’s podcasting platforms.

"There's a clear path forward to getting healthy," he said Wednesday, as though his diagnosis is a road map for a new adventure.

Pachinko S02E01 Ending Explained & Recap: Do Hansu & Sunja Reunite? Pachinko Season 2 Episode 1 ending

Pachinko S02E01 Ending Explained & Recap: Do Hansu & Sunja Reunite?

By Tamal Kundu

Pachinko has returned with the second season on Apple TV Plus, and the viewers want to know how the season premiere ends and whether Hansu and Sunja reunite . The plot encapsulates four generations of the Baek family, Korean immigrants who make a home in Japan only to face recurrent discrimination and racism throughout the years. In Season 2 Episode 1 , Hansu returns to Osaka as World War II continues to unfold. Noa and Mozasu, despite their young age, begin to realize the uglier aspects of the society they live in. Meanwhile, in the late 80s, Solomon struggles to set up his business. Here is the Pachinko Season 2 Episode 1 ending explained featuring spoilers.

tv 2 travel guides

What happens at the end of Pachinko Season 2 Episode 1?

Sunja, her children, and Kyunghee struggle to make ends meet as Japan slowly loses the war. Noa and Mozasu attend school, where they constantly face snide remarks about their food. Although they use Japanese aliases, it appears that some of the other students, especially those who are in the same class as Noa, have some inclinations about who they are. Mozasu, despite being the younger sibling, makes sure that his classmates will never again say such things, while Noa stays silent against the onslaught of mockery, even though rage begins to bubble up within him.

In 1989, Solomon’s attempts to raise funds for his business lead him nowhere. Although he convinces his friend Tetsuya to invest, his old boss intervenes, and those plans fall apart. At one point in the episode, the older Mozasu and Sunja hand him a check for $700,000, but Solomon tears it apart following a confrontation with a racist baker.

Do Hansu and Sunja reunite in Pachinko Season 2 Episode 1?

Sunja gets arrested for making and selling illegal rice wine, but much to her surprise, she is soon released. Mr. Kim, a regular customer of hers, arrives and takes her to a luxurious home, where she reunites with Hansu for the first time in years. Hansu reveals that Mr. Kim has been keeping an eye on her and the children for him. He urges her to go to the countryside with the children, as he knows that Americans can arrive at any moment and drop bombs indiscriminately. Although she sees the life that Hansu has been leading all this time, Sunja refuses, declaring that she will not leave without her husband, Isak, who has been in prison for several years. As the episode nears its end, Hansu realizes, perhaps for the first time, that Sunja deeply cares for Isak.
