September is also considered one of the best times to visit the Hawaiian Islands, as the summer crowds wind down and prices drop. Although this month marks the end of summer, the temperatures continue to soar and remain in the upper 80s and low 90s during the day. Evenings are temperate and comfortable in the lower 70s. September also brings some of the warmest water temperatures of the year.

Labor Day weekend does tend to be crowded in Hawaii. However, after the holiday, crowds dissipate very quickly. September is a great month to visit the Hawaiian Islands to avoid crowds. This is also one of the best times to visit in terms of accommodations and airfare prices. Hotel prices dip well below average at $340 per night, and you can get great deals on airfare during this shoulder season.

Those looking for festivals will love visiting Hawaii in September. The annual Aloha Festival on Oahu runs through September and features unique events. You can enjoy Hawaii’s largest street party, parades, and plenty of cultural food, fun, and music.

Hawaii In October

The rainy season begins each October in Hawaii so bring an umbrella ! But you can absolutely still enjoy the beauty of the islands during this time of year. In Hawaii, rain tends to fall at night and won’t play a huge role in your visit to any of the islands. Keep in mind that the Big Island of Hawaii sees the least rainfall, while Kauai sees the most rain annually. October temperatures are tropical, in the low 80s, with evenings being pleasant in the low 70s.

This is hurricane season in the Pacific, and although Hawaii isn’t affected by hurricanes often, they are still possible. If you want to avoid the summer crowds, then October is a great time to visit Hawaii. For those on a budget, October brings price drops for both accommodations and airfare . Hotel prices average $340 per night and airfare drops below average in October.

Foodies will want to plan their trip to Hawaii during October for the annual Food and Wine Festival . The festival covers multiple islands over the course of three weekends. Each event features master chefs, culinary personalities, and wine and spirits producers. The Coconut Festival on Kauai honors the coconut with artisans, cooking demos, crafters, entertainment, and coconut games. Take part in the coconut pie eating contest, the coconut cook-off, or just enjoy plenty of food featuring the star of the event – the coconut!

Hawaii in November

A visit to Hawaii in November means higher-than-average rainfall and fantastic tropical temperatures. As is the case with other rainy months in Hawaii, most precipitation occurs during evening hours. When rain does happen during the day, it is often sudden and short-lived. Average daytime temperatures are temperate and in the low to mid-80s, and nights are typically chilly, usually in the high 60s. November also brings the end of hurricane season in the Pacific, making it a fairly safe time to visit the Hawaiian Islands.

Besides the busy Thanksgiving holiday weekend, November is a great time to avoid crowds. The lack of visitors comes with a drop in prices in terms of hotel and airfare . You should avoid traveling at the end of the month to dodge the holiday crowds. Hotels typically range from $350 per night at the beginning of the month to $395 per night by the end of the month. Airfare is also lower in November, making it a great month to visit Hawaii for those traveling on a budget.

Coffee lovers should consider visiting the Big Island of Hawaii in November for the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival . This festival takes place over ten days and features celebrations honoring Hawaiian coffee and culture. Make sure to visit the Kona coffee farms to learn about the harvest, history, and growth of Kona coffee.

Hawaii in December

Hawaii has become the go-to holiday vacation spot for those seeking fun in the sun and escaping winter temperatures. With the poinsettia in bloom during December, it’s no wonder people flock to the islands for a tropical getaway. A December day sees daytime temperatures in the low 80s and nighttime temperatures in the upper 60s. December is the rainiest month in Hawaii, but if you are concerned about rain, consider visiting the leeward side of the Big Island of Hawaii or Maui.

December is ideal for water sports lovers to visit the Hawaiian Islands. The beginning of the month sees fewer crowds and offers more tranquility. By the end of the month, visitors are flocking to the Hawaiian Islands to spend their holiday in paradise. The beginning of December provides lower hotel rates, while Christmas week leading up to New Year’s is the most expensive time to visit Hawaii. Hotel rates average $442 per night during the beginning of the month and jump to $465 per night during the peak of the Christmas holiday.

In December, you can find plenty of festive holiday activities and festivals on the Hawaiian Islands. You can experience an authentic Hawaiian Christmas, including exciting luaus, delicious Christmas feasts, or even Christmas Eve dinner cruises. The best time to visit Hawaii for good weather, smaller crowds, deals and more

So you want to visit Hawaii? Understandable — it's a great place.

However, unless you're booking a spontaneous flight deal (and those do happen), you'll probably want to plan to ensure you're traveling at the best time for your particular dream trip.

Whether you're looking for dry, idyllic weather, perfect whale watching season, or the cheapest time to book a Hawaiian hotel room, consider this your definitive guide to planning a perfect trip to Hawaii.

The best time to visit Hawaii for good weather

Generally, the best weather in Hawaii is in June, July and September. This is when travelers can expect the least amount of rain along with warmer water temperatures.

However, Hawaii isn't a true four seasons state and it has pretty great weather year-round. So if traveling during June, July or September isn't in the cards, you're still probably fine as there's really no bad time to go. I just got back from a trip in mid-November and the weather was great. It was warm enough to swim in the ocean without being too hot lying in the sun.

Hawaii has a tropical climate, with temperatures generally staying between 83 and 88 degrees all year long.

You should check local weather, though, as conditions in some parts of the Islands are wetter than others depending on if you are staying on the windward or leeward sides of each island.

Kauai, for instance, gets a lot of rain on the northern side of the island compared to the southern side (which does lead to some pretty great rainbows). Even if the forecast calls for rain, however, the rain tends to come in short bursts and doesn't last long.

Best time to visit Hawaii to avoid crowds

The peak tourism season in Hawaii typically starts in the middle of December and continues until the end of March or mid-April, depending on the timing of spring break for major parts of the U.S.

The less busy season stretches from the middle of April until mid-June, when most schools are out of the summer and then resumes from September until crowds tick up before the holidays. Shoulder season is a great time to visit. The huge crowds are gone, prices are lower and you can have more of the beach to yourself. Even in busy spots like Honolulu, you'll have more breathing room after Labor Day and before Thanksgiving.

July and August, while not considered Hawaii's busiest season, still tend to draw decent crowds — and are especially popular with vacationing families.

Cheapest months to visit Hawaii

Traveling to Hawaii is usually priciest during peak season, so if you want to save, wait until the off-peak or shoulder seasons.

The shoulder seasons in Hawaii run from late March through the beginning of May, and from September until Thanksgiving. However, spring break and the beginning of September can yield high traffic and higher prices, too, so look carefully before booking.

Historical data from the travel booking site Skyscanner shows airfare is at its most expensive during the winter, specifically in January. At this time of year, average long-haul flight prices can exceed $1,400.

However, prices can plummet during the shoulder seasons or times that cushion peak periods, such as late November and early March. This past September, we saw a fare war develop with prices as low as $62 one-way to Hawaii. This is especially true if you are coming from the western half of the U.S. Keep an eye on TPG deal alerts , where we regularly cover sales to Hawaii.

We looked at historical data, and generally, the most expensive month for a room in Honolulu is January, with the least expensive month being April. Analysts tell TPG it's best to book as early as possible for the best rates in the off-season. We're told that many tourists are booking as close in as a week before arrival, and the best deals will be had as far out as possible. It pays to plan ahead.

Of course, you may have more flexibility when you cash in your points and miles — though hotel award rates tend to shift with peak and off-peak seasons, too. Also, award flight availability is often directly tied to demand.

Best time to travel to Hawaii to surf

Only four of the islands in the Hawaiian archipelago are suitable for surfing year-round: Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. As for when and where you'd like to surf, well, that depends entirely on your skill level.

The waves follow a somewhat consistent schedule. In the winter, for example, surfers can find serious swells off an island's north coast, while the south coast experiences calmer seas. During the summer, the opposite is true.

So, for advanced surfers, the winter season, or ho'oilo, which runs from mid-November to early February, is when you should look out for big wave surfing competitions on the North Shore of Oahu, also known as the "Seven Mile Miracle."

On the Big Island, surf enthusiasts should check out La'aloa Bay and Honoli'i Beach Park.

For novice surfers, you'll want to spend more time on the island's southern coasts in the winter. In Maui, beaches in Kaanapali, Lahaina and Kihei deliver just-right waves for beginners to get their feet wet.

Best time for whale watching in Hawaii

The best time to go whale watching

Whales migrate to Hawaii in pods of roughly 1,000 between late December and early April, making Maui and the Kohala Coast of the Big Island two of the best places on Earth to spot the giants. Note that sometimes whales show up as early as November, so you could get lucky if you travel during shoulder season.

The best time to see turtles

If you're interested in spotting Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), they're plentiful year-round in Maui, on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kaui and on Oahu. One of the most famous spots for turtle-spotting is on Ho'okipa Beach in Maui.

Visit in the summer, during nesting season, to increase your odds. You'll even find sea turtles on some hotel grounds. I was able to get up close and personal with turtles on a trip to the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island. At that hotel, they hang out in the hotel's lagoon.

Many vendors sell turtle snorkeling adventures and I've had great luck with two separate snorkeling trips in Hawaii.

A warning, though: please don't get too close. People are asked to give the turtles at least ten feet of space and never touch them. Human touch can spread bacteria to turtles, which can lead to starvation for the creature. Remember that green sea turtles are listed as an endangered species.

Hawaii has five of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, but green sea turtles are the most common.

When to visit Hawaii for events

Summer events.

In the summer, on the third weekend of July, visitors can attend the Prince Lot Hula Festival, Hawaii's largest non-competitive hula event.

Fall events

The Hawaii Food & Wine Festival is a major draw for foodies, featuring an extensive lineup of dinners, parties, cooking classes and more taking place in October and November of 2024 on three different islands – Hawaii, Maui and Oahu.

In September, travelers can attend the Aloha Festivals in Waikiki, which feature arts and crafts, food and performance stages. Don't forget the floral parade.

Winter events

This is prime season for surfing competitions, including the Vans Triple Crown of surfing on the North Shore of Oahu.

Spring events

Heading to Hawaii in the springtime? Consider the Honolulu Festival in March or the Lantern Floating Festival, held on Memorial Day yearly in Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu.

Worst time to visit Hawaii?

This is kind of a trick question, as there is really no bad time to visit Hawaii. You'll find warm weather and sunshine most of the year. Even when it does rain, it is often just for a few minutes.

That said, some locals say December is the worst time of the year because of the extra crowds, extra costs, and the increased rain shower odds. But even with all that, I'd trade Northeast winter weather for that any time of the year.

With year-round sunshine and balmy weather, any time is a great time to visit Hawaii . But while there are no major seasonal changes in the Islands, there are subtle differences in weather, crowds and prices throughout the year.

Most visitors travel during breaks, so summer and mid-spring are busy. But the busiest time in Hawaii is actually winter – specifically the last two weeks of December through early January – as people flee cold climates for sunny beaches and warm weather. During this peak time, prices for airfare and hotels are the highest. You'll find cheaper rates during late spring and fall, before Thanksgiving.

During the summer, the average daytime temperature is 85°F; in the winter, it's 78°F. But summer tends to be drier and hotter; winter is often rainy and wet. For more tips and advice, read on before you plan your next vacation to the Islands . 

June to August is busy, but the weather is perfect

If you want to experience Hawaii at its best, visit during the summer. The days are long and languid, the weather is almost always sunny, and there's so much to do. But schools are out on summer break, making this a peak season for traveling to the Islands. Expect higher prices on airfare and hotels and longer lines at popular attractions. Reservations for things like Hanauma Bay on Oʻahu and sunrise at Haleakalā National Park  on Maui may be harder to nab.

Surf is up on south-facing shores – like Waikiki on Oʻahu and Poʻipu on Kauaʻi – and outdoor events and festivals are happening on every island. June starts with the annual King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade through Waikiki. Every weekend, Japanese temples host bon dances at night, with traditional dancing, music and food. On Maui, there's the annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival ,  Maui AgFest and Maui Film Festival .

Every island has a county fair, with keiki (kids) rides, live entertainment and food booths. And surfing is celebrated at the annual Duke's OceanFest in August, a weeklong festival in honor of the legendary Duke Kahanamoku, with surf contests, surf polo, swimming, stand-up paddling and Hawaii's only dog surfing competition.

Most plumeria trees will be in full bloom, and it's also mango season, so expect lots of mangoes on the menu in restaurants and at farmers markets across the state.

September to October is the cheapest time to visit

Fall is typically the slower season for travel in Hawaii – you'll run into fewer crowds but still enjoy warm temperatures, averaging a high of 88°F. Airfare from the US mainland is usually at its lowest, and finding deals  (and rooms) at hotels will be easier.

Evenings are balmy – perfect for a quiet dinner at an oceanfront restaurant – and the ocean is actually the warmest it will be all year. It's still hurricane season until November, though, with most hurricanes hitting the Islands in late summer and early fall.

November to January is the best time to escape winter — but expect crowds

It's no surprise the winter months are Hawaii's busiest – you can still lounge on the beaches here and bask in the sun. The days start getting shorter in late fall, and November, namely Thanksgiving weekend, signifies the start of Hawaii's busiest travel period. Rooms may be hard to get, so book early if you're planning a trip to Hawaii during this time. This is also the priciest season, though you can sometimes score deals on airfare.

Winter months bring monster surf to the north shores of all islands. Professional surfers flock to Oʻahu's fabled North Shore for contests, including the Triple Crown of Surfing and the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitation – both exciting to watch from shore. (Don't attempt to get in the water when the surf's up.) The Honolulu Marathon happens in December, when thousands of people hit the roads from Waikiki to Hawaiʻi Kai. 

Starting in November, humpback whales – called kohola in the Hawaiian language – start their annual return to Hawaii to breed, birth and nurse calves. An estimated 8000 to 12,000 migrate from Alaska to the Islands' warm, shallow waters from November through April, and the protected marine mammals can be seen from every island.

February and early March are often rainy and slow 

Late winter brings good news for budget travelers and anyone looking for a more relaxing vacation: you can often find discounts on airfare and hotels, and beaches, hiking trails and popular attractions aren't nearly as crowded as during the peak summer and winter seasons.

Winter months tend to be rainier than summer, but the showers are usually localized and don't last that long. This is a great time to hit farmers' markets – every island has them! – as avocados, citrus, lychee and other tropical fruits are still in season.

Mid-March to early April is an ideal time for families

With the exception of spring and Easter breaks, spring is a slower time of year for travel. But when schools are out, it's another peak season. The prices aren't as high as they are in the summer and winter months, though, and the weather is cool and comfortable, not summery hot – perfect for outdoor adventures with kids. 

It's a nice time to walk through zoos – the Honolulu Zoo on Oʻahu is the largest in the state, but the Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens in Hilo is charming, with a great playground and botanical gardens. The ocean is fairly calm during this period, making it great for snorkeling and swimming.

And if it rains, there's plenty to do indoors. Oʻahu has a few indoor playgrounds, including Kids City  in Honolulu and Kapolei, Hawaii Children's Discovery Center in Kakaʻako and the new Keiki Kingdom , with the largest ball pit on the island. This is also a great time to take in a luau, which can often be sold out during busier seasons.

May to June is best for couples 

Hawaii is one of the most romantic places in the world, and heading there during a slower time – fewer visitors, emptier beaches – makes for an even more magical trip for the lovers out there. This is just before the peak-summer travel time, so you'll likely find cheaper flights and accommodations.

Temperatures are in the mid-80s, and the weather isn't as rainy as in early spring, which means it's a great time to hit hiking trails, walk along beaches and explore charming neighborhoods, like Kailua on Oʻahu, Paia on Maui and Hanalei on Kauai. This is also a great time to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park , as it's not as crowded or rainy. (Still, if you're hiking through the park, you should bring rain gear just in case.)

Most Popular Times to Visit Hawaii

With an annual visitor count that regularly approaches 10 million, Hawaii is beloved throughout the year. However, some periods are busier than others. According to the Hawaiian Tourism Authority, the most popular months for tourists are almost always June, July, and December (in some configuration). July usually takes the top spot — as it did in 2022, when it drew more than 919,000 visitors to the islands.

This aligns with the fact that Hawaii is a popular destination for families during school breaks. Summer vacation attracts many travelers, and so does winter break, especially among visitors from cold climates who'd like to spend their holidays singing "Mele Kalikimaka" on a warm, sunny beach .

Spring is another time that can draw considerable crowds. In addition to bringing American spring breakers, spring also draws Japanese travelers celebrating the so-called Golden Week , a stretch in late April and early May when four holidays are celebrated over seven days.

Best Times to Visit Hawaii for Smaller Crowds

Since school breaks are the most popular times in Hawaii, the months when school is in session tend to draw the smallest crowds. February and September consistently rank near the bottom of the tourism board's list of busiest months — in 2022, they saw 630,000 and 703,000 visitors respectively — and the months surrounding them tend to be quiet, too.

Given the holidays that happen in the spring, though, fall is perhaps the best time to plan a trip if you're looking for a long stretch of uncrowded days. There are fun events to be found at this time of year, too, like the Aloha Festivals in September and October's Hawaii Food & Wine Festival.

Best Times to Visit Hawaii for Good Weather

The weather in Hawaii is consistently warm, with temperatures slightly lower in the winter months (November to April) than in the summer (May to October). Hawaii's average daily winter temperature at the beach is 78 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average daily summer temperature is 85 degrees, according to the Hawaiian Tourism Authority . Water temperatures are usually pleasant, too: they average around 74 degrees most of the year but inch up to around 80 degrees in the summer.

Rainfall is at its lowest in Hawaii from April through October, but even the wetter winter months aren't too bad. Rain is most common on the northeastern (or windward) sides of the Hawaiian islands , meaning sunseekers can stick to the leeward southwestern edges for the best chance of clear skies. Hawaiian rain showers are also famous for producing rainbows — so drizzly days have their perks.

The timing of severe weather can sometimes be hard to predict, since tropical storms and cyclones can happen year-round in the Pacific. But the Hawaii Department of Health warns that hurricane season officially runs from June through November.

Best Times to Visit Hawaii for Lower Prices

Hawaiian Airlines reports that traveling to the state is generally cheapest in the shoulder seasons of late spring and early fall — and they should know, considering they operate both nonstop flights to Hawaii from the United States, Asia, and the South Pacific, as well as inter-island flights that can get you from one Hawaiian island to another. For more savings, the airline suggests booking your flights so you're arriving and departing on weekdays, not weekends. Generally speaking, hotel rates soar in Hawaii during the Christmas and New Year holidays in late December and early January, and again during spring break and summer vacation dates. So, if you want to cut costs on both accommodations and airfare, avoid those times of the year.

Another way to visit without worrying about airfare and hotel costs is to hop aboard a Hawaiian cruise . Choose an itinerary that visits outside of the peak tourist seasons, and you'll have great odds of experiencing all that Hawaii has to offer without any exorbitant on-shore costs.

Best Times to Go Surfing in Hawaii

Visitors and locals can surf year-round on Hawaii's famous waves, but there are a few things to keep in mind if you're planning to hang ten . Waves are usually larger during the winter months, says the Hawaiian Tourism Authority, especially on the islands' north-facing shores, so conditions aren't ideal for beginners learning to surf.

If you want to watch the experts tackle some big waves, though, this can be a fun time to visit. Some of the world's greatest surf contests happen in Hawaii during the winter, like the Vans Triple Crown — held on Oahu's North Shore every year since 1983 — and the Eddie Aikau Invitational , held any winter when waves consistently reach 40 feet in height.

Best Times to Go Whale Watching in Hawaii

Humpback whales can be seen off the islands' coasts from December through May, so visitors who come to Hawaii with whale watching in mind will be in luck for much of the year. The peak of the season is generally considered to be January, February, and March — that's when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration calls on the public to help monitor whales and contribute to its annual Sanctuary Ocean Count .

Worst Times to Visit Hawaii

In an environment as beautiful as Hawaii, it's hard to call any season a "bad time" to visit. But if you want to avoid high prices and giant crowds at the islands' most popular destinations , you might consider skipping the busy months of June, July, and December.

No matter when you visit, bear in mind that Hawaii has a unique ecosystem and a vibrant Indigenous culture — both of which have sometimes been put at risk by overtourism. If you travel to the islands, do so responsibly by respecting the locals you meet, keeping a safe distance from wildlife, and patronizing Hawaiian-owned businesses when you can. Be sure, as well, to prepare adequately for any outdoor activities you want to try. There's never a good time to be stuck on a steep mountain trail or stranded in choppy waters!

Despite these near-ideal conditions, April sees far fewer crowds than summer or winter, making it one of the quietest, most affordable months to visit any of the islands.

The best month of the year for your visit depends on your personal preferences. Here is a general overview of what to expect in the Hawaiian islands during seasons throughout the year:

January and February

Tropical flowers are in bloom , the weather is in the low 80s with possibly chilly nights, and there is an increased chance of rain. Crowds are below average and rates for hotels are reasonable. Events include whale migration, golf and surfing tournaments, and Chinese New Year.

March, April, and May

Weather is in the 70s and 80s during the day, with cooler nights and an overall decreased chance of rain. Hotel rates outside of Spring Break and Memorial Day are reasonable. Events include several cultural festivals. 

June, July, and August

These months have higher temperatures in the mid-80s and 90s with warmer nights. Crowds and hotel rates increase with the beginning of summer and peak during the 4th of July. With careful timing, you can experience the Hawaiian Islands during some of the most popular festivals.

September and October

Temperatures in the 80s with the warmest ocean temperatures of the year. Less crowded than in the summer, especially after Labor Day. Hotel prices dip below the yearly average. This is hurricane season, though they rarely make landfall in Hawaii.

November and December

Higher than average rainfall, but warm weather in the 70s and 80s. If you avoid Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, you can experience fewer crowds and cheaper hotel rates. There are still plenty of festivals to enjoy, including Christmas events if you don’t mind the busier time of year.

The best time to visit Hawaii is between March and September. This is when the islands see the highest temperatures and the lowest amount of rain. It’s the perfect time to enjoy the beach or the water.

However, Hawaii’s perennially warm weather makes it a good destination at any time of year, with pleasant temperatures between 73°F and 86°F.

It’s wetter and marginally cooler between October and February, especially at altitude, but you may get the chance to see a tropical beach with a snow-capped volcano as a backdrop. Note that the islands’ west coasts are significantly drier than those in the east.

There are fewer visitors from October to November, lending the islands a tranquil feel. The ocean swells from January to March, bringing professional surfers in search of giant waves.

Visiting Hawaii in January

Outside of New Year, January is a month with some breathing space as the crowds dissipate after Christmas. However, it’s still popular with visitors jetting in from the mainland to escape the winter. This is one of the wetter months, so a longer trip offers a better chance of a good few dry days.

• Humpback whales can be spotted around the island chain from December to May. The best time to see them is from January to March.

Visiting Hawaii in February

Hawaii sits in the path of trade winds, so it's breezy most of the time. But the winds can drop in winter, leading to calm days ideal for taking to the skies above the volcanic terrain in a helicopter. Conversely, the swells roll in from across the Pacific, attracting competition surfers from around the globe looking to test themselves against the waves of Oʻahu's North Shore.

Visiting Hawaii in March

The mercury starts to rise, but March is still prone to the occasional winter storm, and shares the title of being the wettest month with November. Bringing a waterproof jacket and planning activities around showers will pay dividends.

Visiting Hawaii in April

The air heats up noticeably in April: whereas you might have needed a sweater for the evenings in March, it’s usually comfortable to be in short sleeves throughout the following month. The tropical feel extends to the foliage, with riotous displays of flowers dotting the hillsides.

May is an excellent time to enjoy activities on and beside the ocean. The high summer is busier across the archipelago as visitors flock from continental US. But there are still plenty of places to get away from any crowds, and busier places such as Waikīkī Beach are cheerfully exuberant. • Peak Season: Dec 22 - January 3.

Most people wouldn’t consider Hawaii “crowded”, particularly compared to many popular destinations. The exception is Waikiki, by far the most crowded area in Hawaii. On average there are roughly 200,000 tourists on the islands on any given day: 100,000 on Oahu, 48,000 on Maui, 29,000 on the Big Island, and 22,000 on Kauai. Oahu, Maui and Kauai are similar in size but the populations and amount of developed land vary considerably. Oahu has a population of nearly 1,000,000 while Kauai’s is 64,000. The population density is about 1600 per square mile on Oahu versus 100 on Kauai. There are areas of Kauai, like Wailua and Kapaa, which suffer from congestion but Kauai is a clear choice for those wanting more solitude.

From December 22 – January 1st almost all Hotels are at 100% occupancy and the congestion will be noticeable at all the popular resort areas. The best region to visit for a quieter holiday during this period is Kauai’s north shore. The following chart shows the average number of tourists in Hawaii on any given day. The numbers are based on visitor data from 1990 – 2012, so they are lower than today’s averages, but they still give you an idea of how each month compares to the next. For example, July is 29% busier than September. December’s numbers are skewed because most arrive around the 19-24th. The beginning of December is much less crowded.

Is there ever a wrong time to visit Hawaii? Many people would doubt it. But when is the best time to visit Hawaii? Well, it’s not always easy figuring out!

While there are alignments of certain stars and planets that may determine the best time to visit, Hawaii is such a great place to visit any month of the year, and it would be just as magical.

When Should You Visit Hawaii on Vacation?

Many factors go into determining the answer to the question above. Some people will tell you that there’s no wrong time for a visit to Hawaii (and they would be right).

So when should you visit Hawaii on vacation? Here are a few tips:

• Three notable events make good times for those planning a visit to Hawaii in late spring or early fall. The first is May Day (May 1st), which many people know as Lei Day and the celebration of Mahealani Spencer’s birthday.
• The second event is the Last Friday Art Walk – a night when art galleries along Kona’s Front Street remain open until 9:00 PM, and local musicians perform live music on stage all evening long.
• The third event, also held on one weekend in September, is called Aloha Festivals Fireworks Extravaganza. It is a massive community event that draws thousands of people to watch the stunning fireworks display.
• For whale-watching enthusiasts, one of the best times to visit Hawaii is between December and April, when you can experience the annual migration of over 20,000 humpback whales. You’ll see them migrating from their winter feeding grounds in Mexico to their summer breeding grounds near Alaska.
• September has two big schedules for those interested in surfing competitions: The Billabong Pipe Masters Championship and the Quicksilver In Memory Of Eddie Aikau surf contest.

When it comes to the climate, that depends on what island you’re visiting. On the big main islands (Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii), the weather is the same throughout the year. Their climate relies heavily on trade winds to control temperatures for most of the year. 

But each month has its own climate features:

• The warmest month in Hawaii is July, with average high temperatures in the low-mid 90s and lows in the mid 70 degrees.
• Oahu’s climate is chilly during December, January, and February when highs are in the 60s to low 70s, but it can feel cooler because of wind chill. The climate is generally mild in June, August, and September, with high temperatures in the low-mid 80s.
• The climate on Maui and Big Island is a little different from Oahu’s climate. Although the average climate temperature is the same as Oahu’s climate – around 66 degrees during winter – it can feel colder. 

That’s because of fierce winds blowing consistently throughout the year.

• In Hilo, the climate is low to mid-80s from April through September. Temperatures are cooler during the colder months of October and November, averaging around 62 degrees. 

However, the climate starts heating up again by December, averaging a daily high of 78 degrees.

• The climate on Kauai is much like the climate on Oahu, with an average of 66 degrees throughout the year. However, climate temperature can feel more extreme due to dramatic differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures. 

Daytime climate averages 93 degrees in July, while nighttime climate averages 63 degrees.

 That said, let’s face it; while you could visit Hawaii at any time of the year, some months might be better than others for visiting.

At the beginning of January, a lot of people visit Maui for the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival. It’s a celebration of Hawaiian culture through hula dancing, with dancers from across the globe attending and performing. The festival starts around New Year’s Eve and goes on until about mid-January.

For many, January is also when visiting Hawaii has its biggest draw (as mentioned above): whale watching. While it depends on what you want to see while you visit Hawaii, there are plenty of opportunities to visit islands where visitors will see whales during this time of year.

February is a busy month when it comes to visiting Hawaii for two reasons. First, Valentine’s Day celebrations are held across Oahu in February, with restaurants and hotels offering special menus and discounts. It’s the perfect time to visit the island if you want a romantic getaway before or after your visit.

The second draw to visit Hawaii in February is another famous Hawaiian culture festival: the Aloha Festival at Kapiolani Park. It’s a fun way to learn about the history and the culture of Hawaii.

This event is so unique because it offers free hula lessons for everyone who attends the festival.

In late February, visit Hawaii for another spectacular sight: lava viewing. Most of the year, you won’t see any active lava flowing from volcanoes on Big Island. You can visit Kīlauea Caldera or Halema’uma’u crater during these times if you want to experience an active volcano and bubbling lava pits.

Visit Hawaii in March to visit one of the best places on the planet for meteor showers: Mauna Kea. Many people visit Hawaii specifically to witness this natural phenomenon. However, visitors will need to stay at an altitude of over 10,000 feet. 

If you’re not that adventurous, then you may visit Hawaii during another period when they’re visible: mid-July through August.

April is a great time to visit Hawaii for hula hooping. It’s the perfect opportunity for Honolulu residents and visitors who visit Hawaii specifically for this festival.

It’s also a fun time to visit the island because of other festivities throughout the month. For example, Japanese-Americans celebrate their culture in mid-April by showing off their kimonos, dancing, and a traditional drum festival.

May is the month for spectators who visit Hawaii for Polynesian Festival . It’s a fantastic way to learn about Hawaiian culture and check out fun activities like canoe races. There are also plenty of other things to do, such as visiting the doldrums.

May is also a great time to visit Hawaii for people who love shell hunting. The best shells are present during this month and may last through August. Visiting during this time will ensure that you get the perfect souvenir from your visit to Hawaii, not to mention a great tan.

If you love luaus, then June is one of your best months to visit the state. There are plenty of luaus throughout Oahu at resorts and hotels, where visitors can learn about Hawaiian culture while eating poi and drinking some delicious sake. July has plenty of options too.

During this month, visit Hawaii for the Merrie Monarch Festival. The festival started in 1964, and it is held every year at Mailekini heiau on Oahu’s North Shore. It’s a celebration of hula dancing that honors King David Kalakaua, who invented this dance style.

If you love surfing, visit Hawaii in July when the state hosts its most significant event: Triple Crown of Surfing on Oahu’s North Shore. You can visit Waimea Bay or Sunset Beach to check out the competition.

Additionally, visit Hawaii in July for Pineapple Festival, a special event, which takes place at the Dole Plantation. It celebrates this delicious fruit. You can see the plantation to learn more about its history, visit pineapple fields or enjoy a few exotic cocktails made with the fruit mixed in.

August is another great month to visit the island because of two stellar events. First, visit Hawaii in August for a spectacular display of green sea turtles as part of Turtle Week. It’s also a fun time to visit and watch the diving competition at Ka Lae. 

August is also the month to watch the world’s best surfers display their skills on some of Oahu’s most famous breaks at the Ho’okipa Beach Park Pro-Am.

One of the main tourist attractions here in August is Aloha Festivals . This event features three days of live entertainment, cultural demonstrations, fireworks, and hula.

The weather in August on Oahu is just about perfect. The temperature ranges between 73° and 88°. Expect light rain, morning showers, and afternoon sun with light winds of eight to 15 miles an hour from the northwest. That’s a great combination beyond what you find any month of the year.

September is another great visit to Hawaii. Plenty of activities take place throughout the island during this month. For example, visit the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary to learn about its preservation efforts. 

You will also learn how it helps this endangered species through a variety of programs.

Another reason to visit during September is the Great Aloha Run/Walk. This race takes place in Honolulu over the third and fourth weekends of September. However, the date varies by year. The most common times are on the third weekend or a Saturday.

September also features an off-road triathlon, Ironman Oahu 70.3. It begins with a 1.2-mile swim in the ocean. This component is followed by a 56-mile bike ride and finally a 13.1-mile run.

This time is another excellent month for Hawaii visitors. The weather can be a bit cooler, but it’s still warm enough for all the fun activities available in October on Oahu. Visiting during October means you will probably miss summer crowds and get more affordable airfare and hotel rates.

In October, some of the events to look forward to include a half marathon, Honolulu Marathon, and Honolulu Triathlon. This month also marks Makahiki season. During this time, people celebrate the harvest and acknowledge the gods of old Hawaii.

Oahu is one of few places that continue to keep up with its traditions for this festive tradition.

Taking a trip to Hawaii in November means you will have an opportunity to catch the end of the tourist season and get a better deal on airfare. This month is also the perfect time to visit the Kona side of Hawaii for a great surfing experience. 

If you love the rain, you will be in heaven because November is the time for Kona to get plenty of rainfall.

Other fun November events include a massive golf tournament and a famous film festival. This event features an array of independent films, and you may get the chance to see a celebrity or two at the Waimea Film Festival. 

Your great final month to visit Hawaii is December. The weather is usually pretty stable, with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. The island also comes alive with holiday festivities, making December a favorite for many visitors.

This month is also the best time to attend an event at Pearl Harbor that commemorates the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II. You can watch military aircraft flyovers, re-enactments, and live entertainment. 

It’s a very moving experience if you have ties to anyone who served or died in this devastating event.

Visiting Hawaii in December also means you will get to experience the island’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. This presentation takes place at Kapiolani Park on Oahu and is a great family event that includes a parade, entertainment, and Santa Claus.

However, you may have to contend with heavier crowds and higher prices due to Christmas.

Hawaii is not new to hurricanes. The hurricane season here starts in June and runs through November. The worst storms in the history of Hawaii include the Iniki Hurricane in 1992 and the Iwa hurricane in 1982.

Unlike many other popular Caribbean locations, Hawaii’s hurricanes are usually not of the eerie category. Instead, they are typically smaller Category 1 or Category 2 storms with high wind gusts and heavy rainfall that often arrive without much warning.

Hurricane season is an excellent time for evacuation purposes, but it is NOT ideal for visiting Hawaii on vacation.

Thus, if you plan to visit during the hurricane season, make sure you check weather conditions carefully before purchasing your air ticket. And follow weather news just to be on the safe side.

Hawaii’s dry season is during the winter months of December, January, and February. It will significantly increase your risk of wildfires, especially if you plan a trip during this time. 

With the increase of dry brush comes a higher risk of wildfires that can spread quickly and are extremely difficult to contain.

If you are planning a trip to visit Hawaii during this time, be very careful about where you choose to stay, especially if it is near Honolulu.

If you love fishing, the dry season is also a great time to visit the island. That’s because the water has a lot less rainfall, and there’s more visibility in the ocean, and fishing tours are much more productive.

Many people choose to stay in hotels with outdoor Jacuzzis during this time so they can enjoy some fresh air and soak up as much sunshine as they can get. Social events during this time of year are generally smaller gatherings at restaurants or on large hotel terraces.

Rains in Hawaii are expected to begin in May and last through October. Keep in mind that while it does rain during this time, there is always the possibility of experiencing sunny weather. That’s especially true if you visit one of the more southern islands like Kauai or Oahu for your trip.

Reasons as to why most people do not want to travel to Hawaii during the rainy season include: 

1. Clouds reduce visibility on island sightseeing tours such as helicopter rides, parasailing excursions, etc.

2. Hiking is risky during this season as hikers are at risk for contracting leptospirosis. 

3. The high rainfall means that mudslides are common, and thus there is a higher risk of property damage, especially along coastal areas such as Hanauma Bay.

So, what is the best time to visit Hawaii? It’s difficult to say. 

It all depends on what you want to do while in Hawaii and how the climate will affect your trip if you have young children that like the water, visit during the rainy season when there are sunnier days around Waikiki Beach (but do not forget your rain gear).

If you want good visibility for sightseeing tours of the island, consider visiting during the dry season. If you’re planning a romantic getaway to Hawaii with a significant other, avoid end-of-year holidays such as Christmas or New Year’s Eve. The reason for this is because these times can be very crowded, especially in Honolulu, where most of the hotels reside.

We’re often asked: when is the best time to visit Hawaii? There are multiple answers to that question. In our opinion, there’s really not a bad time to go to Hawaii .  Just about any month is a great time to visit Hawaii .

In this article we share loads of great information to help guide you to the ideal time for you to visit Hawaii based on your preferences. However, if you just want the shortest answer…

TLDR : the best months to visit Hawaii are April, May, September and October for the very best rates, weather and the least crowds.

Hawaii Weather

You’ll always be able to find warm, tropical weather in Hawaii . Due to Hawaii’s proximity to the equator, temperatures don’t vary drastically from season to season like they do in North America, Europe, etc. 

In summer months, daytime high temperatures range from mid to upper 80s. In the winter months, daytime highs average in the upper 70s to lower 80s. (For readers who are more familiar with temperatures in Celsius, 78F is about 25.6C and 85F is 29.4C.)

You’ll be able to see lush, green landscapes any time of year that you visit Hawaii. Vibrantly colored tropical flowers bloom throughout the year in Hawaii , even in the winter months . 

Ocean temperatures around Hawaii allow for year-round swimming and ocean sports. Though, you should always check ocean conditions before going out .

Rainfall from season to season varies slightly more than the temperatures do. Summer months tend to be drier while winter months tend to get more rain. We created a graph that shows how average rainfall levels vary month by month.

Even though winter months (November – March) tend to be a tad rainier, chances are you won’t have to contend with much rain throughout your entire trip. We’ve been to Hawaii in all the seasons and very, very rarely has rain caused us to change our plans. We wouldn’t hesitate to hop on a plane to Hawaii any day of the year, even in the wetter wintertime. We make sure we pack quick drying clothes so a passing shower won’t hamper our sightseeing adventures. Usually rain showers are short lived and you are treated to a rainbow afterwards. Hawaii Vacation Crowds

Before we talk about the most “crowded” time in Hawaii, we should mention that Hawaii has never felt very crowded to us, with the exception of the urban paradise of Waikiki in Honolulu, which is Hawaii’s most populated city.

There are certain times per year that are busier than others in Hawaii. They tend to fall around holidays and family summer vacations. Let’s look it the demand in a graph form. The following chart from our Hawaii visitor analysis shows how many visitors arrived to Hawaii per month. Note the yellow line, which is the average monthly number of visitors. Any month that rises above the yellow line indicates higher occupancy on the islands. Likewise, any month below the yellow line indicates a lower occupancy.

Here are the main reasons that March, June, July, August and December draw bigger crowds to Hawaii:

• March – families like to take spring break vacations to Hawaii.
• June – summer (in the Northern Hemisphere) vacation for families begin. Actually early June, before most schools complete there year, is relatively quiet. As the month progresses, more schools finish their year and thus family vacations start.
• July – summer vacation and July 4h holiday.
• August – summer vacations continue in the early part of the month. Towards the end of the month, when children are back in school, the islands are less occupied.
• December – early to mid-December is relatively quiet. It’s the Christmas and New Year’s holidays in Hawaii that draw the crowds.

The best times to visit Hawaii to avoid crowds are the months of January, February, April, May, September, October and November.

Hawaii Vacation Costs

Generally speaking, crowds and rates trend together. When there are lots of visitors to Hawaii, hotels can charge higher rates for the higher demand. In contrast, where there’s low demand, hotel rates tend to be cheaper.

We’ve analyzed the most recent Hawaii hotel rates from 2023 to create the following graph. As you can see there are some rate fluctuations through the year and these tend to be fairly constant year over year. The graph indicates that the months with holidays and summer vacations generate the highest rates of the year. Also, Hawaii hotel rates in the cold months in North America — February and March — are slightly above average. To save money, the best times to vacation in Hawaii are in May, September, October and November .

Holidays can be a particularly expensive time to visit all around. In addition to higher hotel rates, you can also expect to pay more in airfare, too. Even dining, especially holiday dining, can be more expensive.

Putting It All Together – Weather, Prices, Crowds

We’ve developed the following decision matrix that helps you compare all those key factors. We’re going to use Kauai as an example of average high temperatures (F) and average rainfall levels (inches)  so that you can get an idea of overall trends that will generally be true across Hawaii.

*Exceptions in February is around Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day.

**Exception in April is that if Easter falls in April, the weeks around Easter can be higher.

*** Generally high until the week after Labor Day, then low.

**** Exception is the weekend of Thanksgiving.

***** Crowds are very low until approximately December 20th, then very high through the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

From the table, you can see that May and September are optimal times for best weather, least crowds and lowest costs. The end of April and the whole month of  October are also quite good . Another great time to consider is the very beginning of June before kids get out of school in the U.S.

I have a friend who lives in Hawaii. I was asking his advice on visiting in late Oct. He said the weather is nice but the winds were annoying that time of year because they blow ash from The Big Island. He said it can be overcast and rainly at times. What do you think? He said late Sept would be good. Otherwise I was looking into Feb. But according to your chart that is the cold time of the year. Any advice?…Thanks

Anytime of year is a good time to visit Hawaii. I was just there at the end of October and didn’t have any issues with the wind.

I think your friend may be referring to VOG (volcanic gases), and the way the wind blows does impact that, but there’s not many days that the wind blows in the direction that creates VOG problems on the other islands. In general the areas most likely to have VOG problems are on the southern end of Hawaii’s Big Island.

When I originally wrote this article, the economy was stronger. The winter months and summer months are typically the most expensive times to visit Hawaii. That’s not necessarily the case with the present economy. Some of the deals I’ve seen are absolutely tremendous.

Honestly, I wouldn’t hesitate to go Hawaii anywhere or anytime.

Kauai is amazing and would recommend it to anyone looking for a place that isn’t full of tourists. There isn’t a turn on this island that isn’t beautiful. You feel like you’re in another world there. The people and even guides on tours are beyond polite! No one ever seems “put out” to answer any question. I never wanted to leave. We don’t keep track of the typical ocean weather patterns between Hawaii and the U.S. Maybe a travel agent that specializes in cruises could answer that question.

Was planning a vacation for the 2011 holiday time. I was wondering if that is a good time. My 14 yr. old wants to visit pearl harbor and go to the beaches while the rest of us want to see the volcanoes and a ethicnatic laui. Can all that be done during that time frame or would sometime be better.

Deedee – you can certainly do all those things during 2011 holiday time.

Since you mentioned volcanoes, I just wanted to let you know that all the islands are made of volcanoes and the shape of the island really shows that. If you want to see volcanic activity, only one island has an active volcano — Hawaii’s Big Island.

If you want to see Pearl Harbor that’s on Oahu. You can either, split time on your vacatoin between the islands or….another suggestion is that it’s fairly easy to go island hopping for the day either on your own or with an organized tour.

Hello, I am planning on taking my wife and son to Maui, HI for the first time next month. Unfortunately, she has become a little hesitant visiting next month after reading online that June is hurricane season. Is it hurricane season? What do you think about visiting this month? From June, July, August which month do you reccomend?

Daniel – that’s an interesting question you posed. Just from my knowledge of Hawaii, I can recall only one hurricane off the top of my head and that was Iniki back in 1992. So, I did some searching, I found this great Hawaii weather resource: http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/MET/Faculty/businger/poster/hurricane/ Notice that is says that hurricanes in Hawaii are very rare events. That source also says that since 1950, there have only been 5 hurricanes that cause any significant damage in Hawaii.

In terms of the best month of the three you listed, I would recommend June and the earlier the better before summer vacations start to increase. If past history is an indicator of the future, you really don’t need to be concerned with hurricanes in Hawaii.

I’m considering a wedding this November in Maui, it will be our first time to Hawaii. Is mid November a good time for a wedding in Maui? I’m concerned about the weather being rainy, etc… Also, what hotels are kid friendly yet nice as well as affordable? We have a 4 year old so want to make sure he is entertained as well. Ashley – Maui is a very romantic place for a wedding.

November is just on the cusp of Hawaii’s “ranier” season, but definitely not in the peak of it. For a kid-friendly resort, you might want to consider the Marriott in Wailea.

A great thing about going in November is that hotel and airfare rates are usually pretty low. Another plus is that you definitely won’t be dealing with crowds.

Hi, I am looking into planning a vacation this December over Christmas break. I have two daughters ages 9 and 12 and can not decide which island to visit. We like nice beaches with kid friendly activities. Rainfall and crowds are my concern. Any suggestions? Do the islands have a Christmas feel over the holidays?

Kelly — based on what you described, I’d suggest the Wailea area of Maui — plenty of beautiful beaches, plus lots of kid-friendly activities throughout the island of Maui. Wailea is an area that receives approximately 15 inches of rainfall per year, so there’s a good chance you’ll mostly be dry. Although, there are no guarantees, which I’m sure you understand.

All the islands and resorts do have a Christmas feel over the holidays, but with a neat “island-style” theme to it. For example the resort Christmas trees may have shells for ornaments or surfing santas, etc. Most of the resorts will offer lavish Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals, many with all the traditional mainland holiday staples.

Hi we are planing on coming in June 2012 and was wondering what your take on the so call all Inclusive is ?

Cindy – Hawaii doesn’t have many all-inclusive options. The only resort that’s all-inclusive is Travaasa Hana on Maui. Other resorts might offer an all-inclusive meal plan, but that’s about it.

I know that all-inclusives can be nice, but as a frequent visit to Hawaii, I’m glad that there’s not a lot of all-inclusives. There’s so many great activities and restaurants to explore on each island, that I don’t want to be captive to one resort. Plus, the Hawaiian Islands are so safe for exploring, you don’t have to fear being outside of a resort like you have to do in some all-inclusive destinations.

Based on what you described what you like to do, I would recommend Maui and/or Oahu. If you’d be there for two weeks, you could easily do both islands. FYI – Island day trips are easy to do from Oahu. So, you might even consider taking a day island hop over to Kauai and the Big Island, too. You can either do that on your own or go with an organized tour.

Hmmmm…. traveling from NJ with 18 month old twins might be a challenge. Depending on where you go and connections, it can take about 12 to 15 hours in just flying and connecting time. If you’ve flown with your babies and know they do well, then maybe that’s no big deal.

Flights are quite expensive now, unfortunately. We recently purchased tickets to the Big Island for November and they were just under $1100 each. Ouch!

If you want to see the active volcano, you must go to the Big Island of Hawaii as it’s the only island with an active volcano. That being said, you need to be careful about bringing young children around volcanic fumes as they may be harmful.

Good beaches are on every island!

Celina – the weather in May and June is very good. You’ll probably find some better deals and less crowding in May/June versus late August.

Ginger – Lanai and Molokai are two of Hawaii’s least visited islands and very unspoiled and uncrowded.

Lanai has several beaches that are only accessible by 4-wheel drive. Like Polihua Beach that’s something like 2 miles long. Good day. What time of year is best to photograph flowing lava?

When the lava is flowing and you can actually view it. You can never predict where it will be at any given time. It’s nature.

Does anyone know if there are any all inclusive trips to Hawaii?

Most places only offer flight and hotel stay.

Raymond – All-inclusive resorts are very rare in Hawaii. That’s actually a good thing as there are so many great restaurants and activities to explore on each island that you really don’t want to be cooped up to just one resort.

The only resort that I know of that offers an all-inclusive set up is Travaasa Hana on Maui. Here’s my review: https://govisithawaii.com/2011/09/29/experiencing-travaasa-hana/ The price may shock you at first, like it did me, but once you realize it includes a 60 minute spa treatment per person per day, then it doesn’t sound so bad.

There was another all-inclusive on Hawaii’s Big Island, Kona Village, that was damaged in the 2011 tsunami. It’s been closed since then. There are plans to reopen it. The last I heard was that it might reopen in late 2013, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that.

Hi, I’m from Western Australia and I am interested in a 2 – 3 week holiday to Hawaii (would welcome suggestions on whether travel to US is a great idea too as I have a total of 6 weeks.)

My wife and I have a 6 & 2yo and would really like to experience Hawaii. I don’t know much about it and would welcome kid friendly suggestions.

I can understand your concerns about the food allergies. Hawaii uses lots of seafood, macadamia nuts and also sesame. Though, not every dish has them. Also, you’ll find keiki (kid) menus at just about every restaurant.

In my opinion, Maui is probably one of the more kid-friendly islands, though you can find kid-friendly things to do on all the islands.

Aloha! This site is already so helpful in planning our Hawaii trip, and we’ve just started looking! My fiancée and I are from Canada and are planning to get married in Hawaii in 2013! We have two questions. We are wanting to have our wedding either in mid-late April or early June. What do you think would be the best time, considering price of accommodations and such and weather (we want an outdoor wedding and would like to be almost certain that it won’t rain 😉 I know there’s never any guarantee but want to know the most likely). Our second question is, we don’t know Hawaii very well, my fiancée has been only a few times and I have never been, and we are wondering what island you would suggest for an intimate, casual, outdoor beach wedding at a decent price. We will have only about 30 guests so don’t need something huge and we also don’t need something fancy, and would like something affordable 🙂 if you have even suggestions for actual places that would host a small wedding, it would be super amazing!

Hi Eloi – based on the history of rainfall levels, June would be a better choice to avoid rain. If you can go in early June, you have a better chance of avoiding crowds and you might get a better price on accommodations.

As for where to go….you could go almost anywhere in Hawaii for a nice beach wedding. Just one place that came to mind is Kapalua Cliff House in Kapalua on Maui. I think they have a pretty informative facebook page. I believe they can accommodate a wedding the size you’ve mentioned. Kapalua is one of my favorite places in Maui with great views of Molokai and Lanai and crescent shaped beaches flanked by lava rocks.

Ps. I meant to mention, we do not want anything to do with a church for the wedding 🙂

I’d seriously recommend looking at the Kualoa Ranch in Oahu – it may fit your needs and they have a range of areas in which you can find prices/areas including a “secret” beach.

I know my wife and I intend to eventually do a renewal of vows at the ranch sometime in the future.

Definitely March rather than the end of May. By mid to late April, the whales have headed back to Alaska. The best of whale season is between about January and March

We are going to Oahu in March 2013 and were thinking about staying in a little beach house at the North Shore (Waialua). We are living in rainy Belgium, Europe and we are looking for some nice weather and beaches where we can swim and relax. The house we want to rent has also a lanai with ocean view. I’m just worried about the weather in March. Do you know if you could swim in calm waters at the north shore in March? And will it not be raining and lots of wind all the time? Evelien – it’s impossible to predict the weather for March. Take a look at the Oahu section under our Hawaii weather page: https://govisithawaii.com/hawaii-weather/ If you click on the links from there, you can see historical data for temperatures and rainfall. The North Shore of Oahu receives about 30 inches of rain per year. March is not the rainiest month, but it’s not the driest month either.

Ocean conditions are also difficult to predict. The big waves of winter months should probably be calming down by March.

If you’re really worried about the weather, you might want to consider the Ko Olina area that’s one of the driest regions on Oahu. They have 4 man-made, protected lagoons that are ideal for swimming and standup paddle boarding. You can find vacation condos to rent there. Hi, We are off on a cruise March 16th 2013 for my husband and I’s 50th birthday from San Francisco to Hawaii really looking forward to it but am abit worried about the crossing heard it can be rough!! But really looking forward to seeing the Hawaii islands it will be a dream come true, we will be due to stop at first island around 20th/21st march is the weather all ok that time of year.

Generally March is a decent month to visit weather wise. However it is one of those transition-ish months from Hawaii’s tropical, but more rainy winter months to the drier summer.

The humpback whales will still be swimming around the Hawaiian islands in March. So keep your eyes peeled for those amazing creatures.

Hi, I’m just about ready to book my 1st trip to Hawaii hopefully staying on Oahu. I’m thinking Feb 14 & I’ve noticed that the weather isn’t too great in the winter months but to be honest I’m hoping to explore Hawaii in general so weathers not that big an issue but I’d still like it to be @ least not too rainy. Scott — it’s not that the weather “isn’t too great in the winter months” at all. It’s just those aren’t optimal weather months. I’ve just returned from two weeks in Hawaii and we had warm, sunny weather every day.

Hi, Hope you can help. My husband and I have been to Hawaii twice, but many years ago and before the days of the Internet and before Expedia, Travelocity, etc. We used one of those places that specialized in Hawaii vacation travel and don’t even know if they still exist. It was my dream to travel there and I absolutely loved all the islands. We have been to Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii (the big island). It was my dream vacation. Now we would love to take my son and his wife along with my two grandchildren ages 12 and 14. We can’t go until June of 2014 when they get out of school. I don’t have the exact date when that is yet, but they normally finish school the end of the first week of June or early in the 2nd week. We have 3 weeks time to spend. I thought I had plenty of time and have just now started looking and I want to stay in nice hotels. This is going to be a very special vacation for all of us. I have used the normal places such as Expedia, etc. and they all come back that everything has been sold out except for one or two hotels. I am putting in bogus dates, but it doesn’t matter what dates I use I still get the same response. I guess I am surprised since I remember our other trips being booked much closer to the time we were actually going. We all live on the east coast of the US, but in different states about 10 hours apart, which will be even more confusing. When I do my searches I just use my own airport code and figure when I need to really book I can call and ask how to travel from different states. Do you have any recommendations of who I might use to get this trip planned because I am just surprised that each hotel would be sold out so early. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks so much.

That is very odd. I wonder if Expedia may have had a glitch. I can’t imagine that hotels would already be sold out for June 2014.

You could do some online research on TripAdisor and narrow down to the hotels of interest. Then check with TripAdvisor and/or another online travel agency for availability.Additionally, most hotels have their own booking engines on their website so you could check directly with the hotels either online or by phone.

I wish we had a travel agency that we could recommend. One reason I hesitate to recommend a travel agency is that they tend to only sell what they have contracts with. So you may not be presented with all the hotel/car/flight options — only the ones where they earn a commission.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. The strange part is I used Trip Advisor as well as others and it was always the same. Just as an example I did have one hotel I put in and I forget which one came back and said sold out and then just as you suggested I went on the hotel’s website and put in those dates and sure enough they came back with all kinds of availability.

Do you know if it matters if you book your rooms directly with the hotel and do your air and car separately if that ends up costing a lot more? I noticed that even the hotel I was looking at had all kinds of specials, but the time frame had passed for them. Maybe it is just to early and they don’t have anything to offer me. I admit I am puzzled.

I just saw an ad that came up on the side of the site that said Pleasant Holiday Vacations and that name sounds familiar to me. Not sure if I booked with them my first visit or something like that. Are they considered a travel agency or just another place like Expedia, Trip Advisor, Travelocity, etc.? I was going to check the different airlines as well since they offer packages as well and at times have booked with different ones for other vacations.

Sorry to be a pest, but since my grandchildren are 12 and 14 are there hotels that you would recommend that are nice and would be good for the adults as well as them? We stayed at the Waikoloa on the big island when it was brand new and owned by Hyatt on our last visit which was 1989. It was so nice and offered so much that we only left the premises once. Now I understand it is owned by Hilton and I see mixed reviews. I think my grandchildren would enjoy that type of hotel because of the pools, boats, monorail, snorkeling, kayaking, and standup paddle boarding. It is on a golf course which my son would love and my daughter-in-law and son love spas. My hesitation is has it gone down hill and not the beautiful hotel I remember? Are you familiar with it the way it is today or can you recommend something that you would think is comparable to it that might be better all these years later.

I am sorry I have asked you so many questions and appreciate your help. No hurry as I think I have plenty of time before deciding what to do, but my head is spinning reading so many reviews where one person loves a place and another hates it. Our last visit of so many years ago we went with a complete Hyatt package and styed in a Hyatt on each island. In a way it was simpler back then because you didn’t have all these reviews. Sometimes you can get the better deal buying the air, car and hotel separately and sometimes it’s better to package.

You are looking early, which is great for research. However, the airfare experts recommend purchasing airfare 3 to 6 months before your trip. Four months prior is supposed to be the sweet spot. Pleasant Holidays is kind of a hybrid of an online travel agency (like Expedia) and a traditional travel agency. We haven’t personally booked a trip through them, but we have friends that have and they were very pleased with the deal and the vacation. It won’t hurt to call them. From my observation, Pleasant Holidays seems to offer especially good deals with Starwoods properties in Hawaii. Starwoods = Sheratons, Westins and St. Regis.

With three weeks, I think you could safely add a fourth island without feeling too rushed.

I cannot recommend a wedding provider as I don’t have any experience in Hawaii weddings. I have heard through a friend that Aloha Island Weddings does a nice job, however since I don’t have any experience with them, I cannot vouch for their work. I’m sure the wedding planners know best about the best beaches near Waikiki that aren’t busy for a sunset beach wedding.

Me and my fiance are getting married in Kauai on Hanalei Bay this December (on the 17th). While the people handling or wedding package said that the weather would be beautiful during this time, I am getting worried because I have read things online about December being the month with the worst weather and about it raining for 12 hours a day. We are paying for a bunch of pictures that day and we have planned this for over a year and now I am just worried that our day is going to be ruined by the rain. We are getting married at 3pm. I just wanted to get someones opinion (preferably someone who has visited quite often or lives in the area) as to if I should be worried we will be rained out. Thanks

You may want to speak to the photographers and organizers to come up with an alternate plan just in case. Normally if it’s raining on one side of the island, it’s clear on the other side.

My husband and I are planning on celebrating our 5th anniversary in Hawaii this September. I have always wanted to do a ‘trash the dress’ photo shoot and what better place to do so than in Hawaii, right? Hi My husband and I would like to renew our wedding vows in September and are staying on Kauai Island. The travel agents here in England do not really cater for just renewals, more the big wedding.

We want it for us and our 2 guests. We’d like a minister, a place near to the hotel we’re staying to renew/bless, (permit needed we guess) a bouquet of flowers for myself and guest, also two Lei (garland) for my husband and guest. We want it simple and sweet just to validate our marriage to each other. Nothing else needed oh! recommend a place to eat and drink?

Sem – we aren’t travel agents so we don’t have that sort of information. We do know that many hotels throughout Hawaii offer turnkey wedding services and vow renewals too. So, check around with some of the Kauai hotels. Also, it might be helpful to do some online searches for “kauai vow renewal” where you may discover some independent vow renewal services in addition to the hotel-based options.

Throughout the entire year are there still about the same things to do, like snorkeling, and surfing and stuff. Or are there better times to do stuff?

Joanne – for the most part, yes. It all depends on the ocean conditions which are always subject to change. You may not be able to snorkel or surf on one side of the island due to big swells, but usually the opposite side of the island will offer better conditions for surfing or snorkeling. Always, check conditions before you go out in the water no matter what time of year you visit.

Hi Sheila, I’ve been reading all these questions/your replies and links. My dad, sister an I are planning a trip to Hawaii in May . My dad has a Time Share an my sister an I want to stay on Oahu as I’m totally obsessed with the show Hawaii 5-0 an want to go see King Kamehameha which I know is in Honolulu. My question is, my dad has booked us at the Hawaiian Princess Resort. I’ve read the reviews on this, it appears to be completely off the beaten path more or less isolated from all or any shops/attractions/restaurants, can you tell me if this is the case? We definately want to be on the beach which I know this resort is, I’m just a bit concerned that it seems to be an hr or more away from things an we don’t really want to spend the week in the car getting from one place to another. Any insight would be Greatly appreciated!

Yes, the Hawaiian Princess Resort is somewhat isolated and you may be spending more time in the car, however, many Oahu roads offer very scenic drives.

Thank you for your reply. Yup thst’s what I thought about the hotel, I have my dad’s log in info for his timeshare now so I can keep an eye on hotel’s. We are planning on stopping at the Palace when we get in since it’s near the airport. We may seriously have to rethink our choice’s-We want to stay at a hotel ON the beach with an ocean view but not spend the week in the car traveling. Thanks again for you reply an info.

We’re planning a trip to Hawaii this April (mid month). I think Maui is where we wan to go. We’d love a small, quite, simplistically modern type resort on a beach with nice sand and very calm waters. We love good food (though need some flexibility due to allergies) some shopping, nature exploration, but mostly – we’re beach bums. Where do you suggest we go / stay? Thank you!!!

Hi, does anybody have any suggestions of where is the best place for me to see endangered Hawaiian monk seals on Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island (at a safe distance, of course)? I am going to these three islands in December.

I haven’t seen anyone mention Hawaii in November. I would like to visit over Thanksgiving with my family. I was thinking of first going to the Volcano area and then to the other side of the island. Will the rain be too much to enjoy hiking the volcano area, it seems to be the rainiest month,

There’s no way to know if your visit falls over a rainy period or not. Weather is so unpredictable. We have visited the volcano area in January, which is another month with higher than average rainfall. We got to do some great hiking in sunny weather. In fact, I don’t recall any rain at all on that visit.

If you pack quick drying clothes and breathable, waterproof jackets with hoods, that helps you to be prepared in case of rain. If you bring it and end up not using it, that’s a win! We’ve also found that if we keep a positive attitude when it rains, that helps us enjoy the beauty of Hawaii even in soggy times.

November during Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to vacation on Maui. The weather is beautiful, not humid and you may have an occasional shower but nothing to worry about. Rain in Hawaii is liquid sunshine, we have been visting Maui for many years during November and have ever had a bad experience

My wife and I (Canadians) are thinking of taking a seven day cruise around the islands during around March 2019, via one of the big cruise lines. Would probably start/finish in Honolulu as this avoids the 3-4 days of sailing from the U.S. west coast or from Vancouver. As we’re not really ‘lie on the beach’ types would this be a good way to see the major highlights? We would probably stay a few nights in Honolulu before the cruise, and in many cases the ships spend two days in Kahului, and two days in Nawillwill.

You’re ready to book a trip to the Big Island of Hawai’i. Congratulations, that’s an excellent choice and you’re about to have some amazing experiences. But narrowing down when to go can be a bit more difficult than opening your calendar and picking a week. We’ll help you narrow down the absolute best (and the absolute worst) time to visit the Big Island. 

In our opinion, the best time to visit the Big Island is during a shoulder period month: April, May, September, or October. Not only will you enjoy fewer crowds, but you’ll also get to experience lower prices, great weather, and good ocean conditions. 

But there is a little more to consider when picking the right month for your vacation:

The Big Island of Hawai’i Weather by Month

Let’s be honest: one of the big reasons you’re headed to Hawaii is for the weather. The Hawaiian islands are located in the tropics, so they enjoy a pretty temperate climate year round. Yes, you’ll be beach going and jumping in the pool nearly 365 days per year. 

But some months are drier and sunnier than others. Let’s get into the data that will help you understand the weather on the Big Island of Hawaii.

The Big Island of Hawai’i Temperatures by Month

In the summer, the Big Island can get hot, especially if you’re on the Kona or Kohala coast side of the island. If you’re coming for the heat, you’ll be excited to know that the average high temperatures will get above 85 degrees in the summer, and it will feel sweltering on the Kohala coast if you’re out in the middle of one of the black lava fields. In the winter, that side of the island cools down, but just a bit, with average high temperatures above 80 for the entire year. 

The windward side of the island (where Hilo is located) stays cooler and wetter all year long. The average high temperatures will dip down into the high 70’s at some points during the year. Combined with the additional rainfall and you’re looking at a cooler and wetter climate on that side of the island.

The Big Island of Hawaii Rainfall by Month

Weather is one of the most important factors for most people as they decide when to head to Hawaii. You likely want sunshine and little rain, which can be tricky in the winter months. The chart below shows Hilo and the Kailua-Kona area rainfall month by month. 

While the winter months get a little more rain and might be a little cooler, the weather in Kona stays pretty sunny and warm year-round. You’ll find even less rain on the Kohala Coast, but be prepared for some larger winter surf, making swimming and snorkeling even more dangerous and difficult at times.

What is the rainy season on the Big Island?

In Hawaii, there are two seasons: summer and winter. The rainy season on the Big Island is during the winter months, from November through April. During these months, you’ll experience significantly more rain than you will during the summer. But you can avoid a lot of the rain by sticking to the leeward side of the island (Kohala or Kailua-Kona).

Hawaii Ocean Temperatures by Month

One thing that we love about Hawaii is that you can swim comfortably in the ocean year-round. We personally, don’t use wetsuits, though we have utilized a wetsuit top on a long, all-day snorkeling trip. Ocean temperatures tracked by NOAA can range from around 76 degrees fahrenheit, up to 81 degrees in late summer, early fall. 

The Big Island of Hawaii Hurricane Season

Hawaii hurricane season runs June 1 – November 30th . While hurricanes don’t occur or cause damage or destruction every year, it’s something to be aware of as you book your trip. Hurricanes causing destruction in Hawaii are rare. The last three hurricanes that have caused damage on Hawaii are: Hurricane Lane (2018), Hurricane Iniki (1992), and Hurricane Iwa (1982). The majority of the damage from Hurricane was on the Hilo side of the Big Island . 

Even if a hurricane doesn’t cause destruction or harsh weather (many of them veer off the path of Hawaii), it can still be disruptive to your vacation. When you get a hurricane warning while on your trip, you can expect to have things disrupted for a few days until the threat passes. For example, if you have a boat trip planned, it will likely be canceled as they wait for storm warnings to pass.

What is the Best Time to Visit the Big Island of Hawaii?

What is the best time to visit the big island for whale watching.

Each year, thousands of humpback whales migrate from Alaska to Hawaii to mate, birth, and feed their young. Though you can see the occasional whale as early as October or November, whale watching season in Hawaii runs from mid-December into April. But the peak months for the Big Island are January and February. 

Each year, Sanctuary Ocean Count holds a whale count where volunteers count how many whale sightings occur during 15 minute intervals. The average number of whale sightings in January and February is higher on the Big Island of Hawaii than it is for March. So if you’re hoping to visit for some great whale watching, it’s best to plan your trip for January or February.

What is the best time to visit the Big Island for Manta Ray night snorkeling?

Unlike whale watching, you can go manta ray night snorkeling any time of year. There is no “season” as far as seeing these beautiful creatures — they live in Hawaii year round. 

That said, during the winter months the ocean conditions can be rougher so you’ll see a higher number of tours cancelled thanks to dangerous conditions. If you’re planning to visit during the winter months and you want to go manta ray night snorkeling, be sure to book your trip at the beginning of your visit so you can reschedule if it gets cancelled due to bad weather or bad ocean conditions.

What is the best time to visit the Big Island for snorkeling? 

If you’re excited to get to the Big Island for snorkeling, book your trip for the summer months. Visiting from May through September will give you a better chance of experiencing calm ocean conditions. You’ll find excellent snorkeling on the Kohala Coast, but winter swells can make snorkeling here very difficult and dangerous at times.

What is the best time to visit the Big Island for the cheapest costs?

For most people, the largest expense on vacation is lodging. Hotels and vacation rentals in Hawaii can be incredibly expensive, even when you can find good deals on rental cars and flights. 

According to data from the Hawaii Tourism Authority , you’ll find the cheapest hotel rates in May, September, and October. These rates can be down as much as 33% less than the peak rates in December. So planning a trip in May, September, and October will save you a lot of money on your hotel accommodations, which you can put towards some amazing Big Island adventures!

What is the best time to visit the Big Island for the fewest crowds?

If you’re hoping to avoid the crowds, you’ll want to head to the Big Island during February, April, September, October, and November. The table below shows visitor arrivals by month for 2019. Why did we use 2019? It’s the most recent normal year for travel. We’ve also looked at the 2022 and 2021 data and 2021 was weird and 2022 looks in-line with what we saw in 2019 but we don’t have a full year of data for it (yet). 

The data below is based on the comprehensive visitor statistics that are collected and published from the Hawaii Tourism Authority. 

The Big Island experiences a peak number of visitors in March, June, July, and December, so skip those months if you want to avoid the crowds. 

Why do we love traveling when there are fewer crowds? It’s easier to get into restaurants, book activities, and you’ll often find slightly better prices on rental cars and hotels/vacation rentals. 

What is the best time to visit the Big Island for the best weather?

If you’re heading to the Big Island for the best weather — meaning sunshine and warm weather — stick to the summer months, or May through October. Especially on the Kona coast, or the leeward side of the island, you’ll have the best chance for sunny skies and warm temperatures that make you eager to get in the water as soon as you wake up. 

What is the worst time to visit the Big Island of Hawaii?

The worst time to visit the Big Island is subjective. Are you trying to avoid crowds and high costs? December, specifically the time over Christmas and New Years is the worst time to visit because this is when the Big Island sees a surge in visitors as well as a surge in high prices. While there are good things about visiting Hawaii during Christmas , be prepared that there are downsides to visiting during this busy period as well.
