India is the largest democracy in the world, with a population of more than 1.3 billion people. It’s also one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, with a GDP that reached an estimated $2.4 trillion in 2019.

If you’re interested in experiencing a large, diverse country, with bustling cities and rural villages, then India is worth considering as a destination.

The Government of India has announced that, with effect from April 1, 2021, all international travelers, except those coming from Nepal and Bhutan, will need to possess a negative COVID-19 test report before undertaking their journey to India.

The test report must have been obtained within 72 hours prior to the commencement of travel.

All passengers will also be required to mandatorily fill up and submit self-declaration forms on the online portal prior to their departure.

Apart from the above, all travelers from USA will need to obtain a tourist visa before undertaking their journey to India. The process for obtaining a tourist visa is as follows:

1. Applicants will need to fill out an online application form available on the website of the Embassy of India in Washington D.C.

2. Along with the completed application form, applicants will need to submit their passport (valid for at least six months from the date of travel), two recent passport-size photographs, and the applicable visa fee .

3. Applicants will also need to furnish proof of their onward and return journey tickets, as well as hotel reservations for their stay in India.

4. Once the application is complete, it can be submitted online or in person at the Embassy of India in Washington D.C.

5. The processing time for tourist visas is typically about four to five days. However, it is advisable to apply for the visa well in advance of the planned travel date to avoid any last-minute delays.

Indian visa requirements for tourists from USA are not onerous, and the process for obtaining a visa is relatively straightforward.

However, it is important to note that all travelers from USA will need to possess a negative COVID-19 test report before undertaking their journey to India.

Tips for traveling to India from the USA

Assuming you are traveling from the USA to India , there are a few things you should keep in mind to make your trip as smooth as possible.

1. Get your visa well in advance.

You can apply for an e-visa up to 60 days before your travel date, and it is recommended that you do so to avoid any last-minute hiccups.

2. Keep your passport and other important documents handy.

You will need these when going through immigration , so make sure you have them easily accessible.

3. Make sure you have all the necessary vaccinations.

India is a country with a variety of diseases, so it is important to be up-to-date on your vaccinations.

4. Pack light.

You will be doing a lot of walking, and the heat can be unbearable at times, so pack accordingly.

5. Have a loose plan.

India is a vast country with a lot to see and do. It is impossible to see everything in one trip, so it is best to have a general idea of what you want to do and see, and then go with the flow.

6. Be prepared for culture shock.

India is a very different place from the USA, and you will likely experience culture shock at some point. Be patient and open-minded, and you will have a great time.

7. Bargaining is a way of life.

In India, bargaining is expected when buying anything from souvenirs to taxi rides. Don’t be afraid to haggle a bit to get the best price.

8. Be aware of scams.

Unfortunately, there are many scams in India, so it is important to be aware of them. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

9. Drink plenty of water.

India is a hot country, and you will need to stay hydrated. Drink bottled water whenever possible, and carry a water bottle with you to stay hydrated throughout the day.

10. Have fun!

India is an amazing country with so much to see and do. Relax, go with the flow, and enjoy your trip.

What to Expect When Arriving in India

Assuming that the tourist is arriving in India for the first time, there are a few things that they should expect.

India is a vast and varied country, so it is difficult to make sweeping statements about the entire nation.

However, there are some generalizations that can be made.

First and foremost, India is a very populous country.

With over 1.3 billion people, it is the second most populous country in the world after China. This means that there will be a lot of people everywhere the tourist goes.

Another thing to expect is the heat. India is a tropical country, so the temperatures can be quite high, especially during the summer months.

The humidity can also be quite intense, so the tourist should make sure to stay hydrated.

The food in India is also quite different from what the tourist is probably used to. Indian cuisine is very spicy, so the tourist should be prepared for that. There are also a lot of vegetarian and vegan options available, as many Indians do not eat meat.

Finally, the tourist should be prepared for the poverty that they will see in India. While there are some very wealthy people in the country, there is also a large population that lives in poverty.

The tourist should not take photos of people living in poverty without their permission, as this can be seen as disrespectful.

I actually have a question about travel times and dates. If I need to arrive in Chennai, India, for an event beginning on August 4 (including one day of rest before the event), on what day should I schedule my departure? I’m a bit confused about change of time zones and duration of flights. Thank you so much.

Hi Patty, I’d say you need to travel in the last week of July. Not sure how long your flight is but assuming it’s the longest one with ab out 24+ hours, you’d need to be in Chennai atleast on the 2nd of August (which is the 1st of August in US). To be safe, I’d recommend booking the flight on 30th or 31st of July.

The U.S. will start restricting travel from India on Tuesday, the White House says.

“The policy will be implemented in light of extraordinarily high Covid-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating in India,” said Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, who noted the move was done on the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The White House, citing guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced Friday that it would begin restricting travel from India to the United States next week, a major new test of the Biden administration’s pandemic response.

The decision was one of the most significant steps yet taken by the White House in response to the crush of new infections in India , where over 3,000 people are dying each day as citizens gasp for air on the streets. The country recorded almost 400,000 new coronavirus cases on Thursday alone.

The White House press secretary, Jen Psaki, said the policy would go into effect on Tuesday. The travel restrictions will not apply to citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States, their spouses or minor children or siblings, or to the parents of citizens or lawful permanent residents who are under 21. People who are exempt from the ban must still abide by the guidance the United States has already put in place for international travelers, including a negative test for the virus before traveling and again upon entering the country from India, and they must quarantine if they are not vaccinated.

Doctors and news reports in India have cited anecdotal — but inconclusive — evidence to suggest that a homegrown variant called B.1.617 is driving the country’s outbreak and that people who have been fully vaccinated are getting sick.

As federal health officials, including Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, the C.D.C. director, and Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, discussed the possible move in recent days with White House officials, they emphasized that there was little known about how coronavirus vaccines respond to that variant.

One U.S. official said the travel restrictions could be modified once there was more data on vaccine response.

Researchers say that data so far suggests that another variant that has spread widely in Britain and the U.S., the highly contagious B.1.1.7, may also be a significant factor.

In the past 24 hours, U.S. military cargo planes began the first deliveries of emergency supplies promised to India by the Biden administration, with shipments of small oxygen cylinders, large oxygen cylinders, regulators, pulse oximeters, about 184,000 rapid diagnostic tests, and about 84,000 N-95 masks, Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, said on Friday.

After President Biden spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, the Biden administration announced Monday that it intended to make up to 60 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine available to other countries, so long as federal regulators deem the doses safe. It was a significant, albeit limited, shift for the White House, which had been reluctant to export excess vaccine s in large amounts.

As hospitals face shortages of intensive-care beds, relatives of the sick are broadcasting desperate pleas on social media for oxygen, medicine and other scarce supplies . Many Indians say they do not know if they are infected with the coronavirus because overwhelmed labs have stopped processing tests.

Several Indian states said they could not fulfill the government’s directive to expand vaccinations to all adults beginning on Saturday because they lacked doses . Only a small fraction of the country has been vaccinated so far.

USA-India Air Travel in 2021: Latest Updates from Nonstop Connectivity to Digital Health Passport

Airlines to introduce digital health passport for hassle-free travel

A travel pass or digital health passport is gaining momentum as a key to unlock air travel across geographies. The travel between USA and India won’t be an exception to this in 2021. In the second half of 2020, IATA called for a digital heath passport as a global solution to facilitate air travel amid country-specific entry requirements, visa restrictions, border closure, etc. The IATA Travel Pass is all set for a pilot trial with the objective of “informing travelers on what tests, vaccines and other measures they need prior to travel, enabling them to share their test results and vaccination reports in a verifiable, safe manner and giving governments the confidence to reopen the borders.”

Reportedly, Etihad Airways and Emirates Airlines are the first carriers to use the IATA Travel Pass in order to collect their passengers’ COVID test results or vaccination reports and verify their eligibility for hassle-free travel on select routes initially . On successful completion of the trial, the Gulf airlines will roll out IATA’s travel app across their global networks. Emirates Airlines plans to launch a trial of the app in April. The IATA Travel Pass will help airlines share their passengers’ COVID health status and eligibility information with destination countries’ airport authorities.

With effect from January 23, American Airlines requires its international passengers to use a digital health passport, VeriFLY app, to provide a proof of their negative COVID health status and check whether they meet other travel requirements for entry to the US or other countries.

Emirates resumes suspended operations in USA

Emirates Airlines’ operations for Seattle, San Francisco, Orlando, Dallas, and New York JFK have remained suspended for months. Starting this February, the airline will revive the suspended routes in a phased manner . In Emirates Airlines’ USA network, Seattle and New York are the first to see the resumption of Emirates flights on February 1, 2021. Emirates will connect Seattle to India with weekly four flights via Dubai. From February 1, Emirates Airlines will not only resume flying to but also increase the frequency of its operations to New York JFK Airport. Of all the airlines operating flights between New York and India, Emirates will fly to New York JFK twice a day.

The next phase of resumption starting on March 2, 2021 will see Emirates flights back to Dallas and San Francisco. The frequency of Emirates flights to DFW International Airport, Texas will be four times a week and the airline will be flying to SFO Airport three times a week. Emirates flights to Los Angeles will become daily with effect on February 1. It means Indians in California will be able to travel on Emirates’ LAX to India flights via Dubai seven days a week.

Alaska Airlines and JetBlue will seamlessly connect travelers on Emirates flights from major 10 destinations in the United States this summer.

Delhi IGI Airport automates immigration clearance

Immigration clearance at New Delhi Indira Gandhi Airport was an ordeal, at times, due to a huge rush of international arrivals on VBM and air bubble flights. Therefore, the airport has installed e-gates that completely automates the immigration clearance process and makes it contactless both for inbound and outbound travelers. New Delhi International Airport’s e-gates make faster passenger identity and document verification possible without human intervention, thereby eliminating the nuances of boarding long-haul flights in the last minute and particularly when the immigration checkpoint is staffed with limited manpower. The fast, automated, contactless immigration clearance process at India’s biggest and busiest airport will be operational in March 2021.

Seattle gets more connectivity to India in 2021

On the west coast, Seattle and San Francisco are the only cities to get better connected to India with both one-stop and nonstop flights. American Airlines’ nonstop flights from Seattle to Bengaluru , which was postponed from 2020 to 2021 due to the pandemic, will possibly be launched later this year . It is one of the most awaited routes between the USA and India in 2021. Seattle to Doha and Seattle to London Heathrow are the two new routes adding to the connectivity between India and the West Coast of USA.

From January 29, 2021, Qatar Airways’ four weekly services to Seattle will provide seamless one-stop connections to the airline’s destinations in India via Doha. By the end of March 2021, American Airlines will start flying from Seattle to London Heathrow – which will connect to India on British Airways’ codeshare flights. Currently, Seattle is served by Lufthansa and British Airways.

New train service connects BLR Airport and Bengaluru City

Traveling from Kempegowda Airport to Bengaluru City is faster, easier and a lot cheaper than before, with a train serving connecting the airport to the city. The end of 2020 saw the connection between Bengaluru International Airport and Bengaluru Railway Station, which makes commute to and from the city many times more cost-effective than other modes of transport. The new Kempegowda International Airport Halt Station (KIAD) is located near the airport and only 45 km away from the city.

Using the train service to and from BLR Airport, passengers traveling alone can avoid the vehicular traffic chaos in Bengaluru, ‘the most traffic congested city in the world’ as per a report published by The Economic Times in June 2020.

Air India increases frequency between Chicago and Delhi

Starting on January 15, Air India enhanced the weekly frequency of its Chicago to Delhi nonstop flights . The airline started an additional flight on this route every Friday taking the frequency to 6 times a week. Besides, January 2021 saw the airline adding two new routes – SFO to BLR and ORD to HYD – to its nonstop services between USA and India.

Hello, my husband (having US passport) is flying from Washington Dulles ->Delhi ->Trivandrum this week on AirIndia. What are the formalities that need to be completed? Does he need to register in Air Suvidha? Anything else that need to be done?

Hi Lekha! Air Suvidha registration within 72 hours before taking the international flight from Washington Dulles is mandatory. If he is fully vaccinated, he must upload a copy of his vaccine card/certificate on Air Suvidha and fill out a self-declaration form on Air Suvidha. He should also carry the original vaccine card and a few color printouts of the filled form that he would receive in PDF format to his email inbox.

Top 5 airlines flying to India

I have a very good experience flighting with emirates. All my expectations were fit well.

Emirates is good airlines. But there plane seats were very small and congested. Need to little good and big seats in economy class.

Meals were delicious, however I got hungry between dinner and breakfast.

Very good!! If at all, the business class chair/bed was bit small!! It’s because of older plane- as was told!

Very good ..nice comfort..crew service was good..and no delays in time ..they always on time..

We did not fly and our agent has been uncilling and uncooperative to help us rebook flight. We will never use Kayak ever again to book our flights, and we will let our network of friends know that using Kayak is equal to losing $$$$$.

The experience of the flight. The food options have definitely gone down

I am vegan. The food was balanced, tasty and enough. I enjoyed the ride. The crew was very friendly and went out of their way to please the passengers.

Food service must be faster and make vegetarian food in good quality

On time take off and early arrival, what else can one want

The overall flight experience between Doha and Kolkata was satisfactory. The staff onboard were notably engaged, responsive, and enthusiastic, providing a level of service that stood out, especially when compared to the less attentive crew on the earlier leg from Heathrow to Doha. Their eagerness to assist made the journey more pleasant. Additionally, the time spent at the Silver Lounge in Doha contributed positively to the experience. The lounge offered a comfortable and relaxing environment, with adequate amenities and attentive staff. Overall, both the flight and the lounge experience in Doha met expectations, making for a smooth and satisfactory travel experience.

Delayed my flights and no communication. We end up spending 6 hrs in Doha. No food or any concern from the airline. Terrible

Check in desk people constrained by fear. Obvious typo on Uganda visa, even though approved, caused loss of flight. Something is definitely wrong with this system.

Being a platinum member, no attention given. No towel or tissue provided.

Between Air India and Qatar my luggage was lost for three days. I eventually found my own luggage location using the Apple Air Tag. Air India used a paper form to report my lost luggage. I could never get past getting past luggage personnel with my report number before they would hang up on me. Only after them specifically telling Air India at Chandigarh airport where my luggage was located which was right under their noses did they react. After three days I finally received my luggage. The Air India luggage folks didn’t seem proactive in finding the luggage’s rightful owner.

Besides the flight cancellation, everything else was prefect. Kudos to Malaysian Airlines.

Operated by American Airlines. Very chaotic and the crew was bit rough responding any enquiries. Restricted leg space.. Qatar would have been better

No towels or tissue and chocolate and mint provided before arrival

Qatar airways from Doha to guangzhau was excellent big bird Boeing 777 more room and smoothly flight, I Love it

It was good no problems made it on time for the next flight overseas!

This flight was a dreamliner so I think the space was ok for the legs, but the option for food was again limited and the crew was same.

Boarding was efficient, had to check in cabin luggage. Seats were narrow, food was more in quantity, received cabin luggage on the luggage belt which was fine.

Bad. Flight was very uncomfortable with narrow and shallow seats, very little food and water. I will not fly etihad again.

Needs better seat for business class. My seat was falling apart. Also no WiFi on that flight

Boarding catastrophic let alone have to claimb the plain rather than using jetway. 5.5 hr delay leaving had to do stop in Lgw for a new crew which further compounded the delay. Connecting flight would not wait and had to pend a night in a hotel. Curiously my seat would not go full flat.

Good. The food was very bad. Except for the chicken rice, rest of the dish went to trash.

Only 1 time food and drinks together was offered, for total 5 hours duration drinks and snacks was never offered. For some people food choice was not available, only veg was available. No entertainment option was there. Crew members were mostly back of the flight asking each other for KitKat and chips to share between them.

Etihad flight sector is a local . .give the same quality upto destination

Long way to improve. Toilets not working. Bad handling when flight was canceled

Lovely crew - comfortable journey despite it being an older plane.

I asked for antibacterial wipes three times and each time I was told they will bring it to me right away with nothing delivered. I finally went to the galley and was told you did not have it. In a post COVID world that is just wrong. The crew was very non compassionate to passengers asking basic questions about food. Very disappointing and makes me reconsider my routing for the future trips.

It was a very full flight, makes it harder for flight crew.

I was extremely stressed out with the delay of our flight, not because of the delay per se, but we weren’t getting any responses from the staff/crew as to what was going to happen with our connecting flights. I think if they were better informed, and in turn we were informed, we would be more at ease. Also, at the Newark security area, the scan machine detected something “foreign” in my crotch and behind area, I cannot believe that in 2024, these machines cannot differentiate between a sanitary pad and a dangerous object. The security officer who conducted the body search was really sweet and apologetic, and asked me if I would like to move to a private area and conducted the search thoroughly without making me uncomfortable, but it is clear that these machines need an upgrade for such issues.

Flight crew was among the best I’ve ever seen

Problems checking in. Charged for bag which was to be included. Repeated trials with in line check in process

Boarding was easy and well organized, Breakfast was not very good.

The flight was cold, no enough blanket and the crew said that they can’t change it. I got very sick in the flight . Most of the kids were coughing.

Sitting in a hotel in Chicago because I was rebooked due to a missed connection. Very frustrating.

Good flight. Entertainment equipment was sub-par - old-style 2-prong jack headphones that don't fir ears well. Entertainment software interface was slow and glitchy to navigate.

Very disappointed. None of the bags from Newark & Toronto flight were loaded onto connecting flight to Mumbai. And yet, no announcement during the flight. No placard near the luggage carousel in Mumbai. Absolute mayhem at Lufthansa lost & found counter. Each agent taking 20 minutes to record each incident. Stood in line for more than 1 hour, after suffering through a 8 hour flight.

Food not of any international or even Indian standard. We have many cuisine available but only paneer & sundry items. Improve & provide some good indian items. Entertainment website or channel out of order.

First and the foremost I was shocked to see airindia standards have come down so low . The food was horrible . They served us 3 meals for vegetarian and all the was paneer . The orange juice was not at all cold it was smelly . After you take this heavy price air India should learn from other air lines . I at one point felt like throwing up . After all this when we landed we were not given landing slip . We had to wait for 45 min at the immigration just because no one was given landing slip . To top it all we were 3 passengers and had checked in 4 check in luggage . Out of which 3 have not yet arrived . Basically status says the loaded it in our flight ( this was a direct fight ) and it never reached . We are still waiting . There is nothing great to tell about our flight . The he only good thing was the crew were very helpful .

Lay out shows 1st row and second row given after taking payment. It's a fraud

The seats were extremely uncomfortable. Air India seats used to be very comfortable . with sufficient legroom. In this aircraft there was no legroom. It is a shame that for your profit margins you are trying to pack people like cattle on these long haul flights. The food was terrible. The bread was hard like a rock. Mr CEO of Air India, why don’t you take a flight in economy from India to USA and experience the hardships first hand. It is utter disgrace

Absolutely nothing. Cold and unpleasant airline staff, and to top it all, the entertainment system was broken. Really harrowing experience.

BAD experience. Entertainment system was not working and most of the passengers had this issue. Staff was not helpful. Meal was yuck. Bad old flights.

Overall good experience. I got first row seats with extra legroom. It does make a difference. Entertainment system was working. However, they kept serving me a VEGAN meal instead of a VEGETERIAN meal. I asked them and showed my tickets that Vegeterian meal is selected but the staff didn't care. VEGAN meal was medicore and not enough to fill tummy. Also unhealthy with butter made from palm oil.

Communication was terrible. Flight was delayed for 4-5 hours in DC (on the front end, and also after we boarded, we had to get off - some issue with fueling the old plane correctly). There was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Once we reach Delhi airspace, apparently there was weather that caused us not to land - we were actually near the ground, saw the run way, and lifted back up to the sky after being sooo close. Then we circled for about 30 minutes, and they decided to go to Jaipur to land until the weather cleared and to refuel. Again, once we landed in Jaipur (wrong city), there was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Then we heard that the crew was reaching their 24 hours. We sat on the place, on the tarmac for another 3 HOURS, with no food and not enough water for everyone on the flight. Then, they kicked us off the plane with no plan, in the wrong city. We went thru customs, got our bags (thank goodness), and had to ask a bunch of staff what was happening and what to do. Eventually, their soltuion was to bus people back to Delhi (like 6 hours we were told) but not everyone would fit on the bus, and unknown timing on when it would leave. At this point it was 9PM (we were scheduled to arrive in Delhi at 11AM...). My husband and I decided to risk it and take a cab that we had to pay ourselves (about $200 US dollars) to get to Delhi (about 5 hour drive). We both had terrible trips back to the US as well - almost missed connecting flight, forced to pay for carry-on luggage (a small back pack!) and duty-free goods by the Air India staff last minute. Just terrible experience all around. Never again with AI! The ONLY good thing was the air hostesses were kind and patient - example: they made sure people with food allergies got their correct.

It would have been perfect if there was onboard entertainment.

Food was unfit even for prisoners. larger front seats are terribly uncomfortable, which is ironic. Thorough need to upgrade aircraft on such a long route.

The 7 tallest peaks in the United States

TRAVEL TRENDS , UNITED STATES Created : Sep 20, 2024, 00:00 IST

usa travel india

You will find all the mountains in the list in Alaska, and this is because that one state has the maximum number of the tallest mountains in the United States. With 14 major mountain ranges, Alaska is home to the majority of the country’s highest peaks, while Colorado and California also boast of towering giants, but cannot compete with Alaska in that case. So, here are 7 tallest peaks of the United States that are all in Alaska.

Denali - 20,310 ft

Denali is the highest mountain in the USA that attracts around 1,200 climbers annually. Located in Denali National Park, it is also the third most isolated peak on Earth, following Mount Everest and Aconcagua. It needs to be noted that the mountain’s height remains a topic of debate, with some suggesting that it may be even taller than the accepted 20,310 ft.

Mount Saint Elias - 18,008 ft

Straddling the border between Alaska and the Yukon Territory, this mountain is part of the Saint Elias Mountains. Named after the biblical prophet by Russian explorer Vitus Bering in 1741, it’s dotted with extensive ice fields and glaciers. The first successful ascent was led by the Duke of Abruzzi after several failed attempts in 1897.

Mount Foraker - 17,400 ft

Often called Denali's sister peak, Mount Foraker is situated just 14 miles southwest of Denali in the Alaska Range. Its rugged terrain and challenging climbing routes make it a favourite among experienced climbers. The peak is named after Joseph B. Foraker, who advocated for the establishment of Mount McKinley National Park.

Mount Bona - 16,550 ft

Located in the Saint Elias Mountains, this is another mountain that is notable for its massive size, with a base diameter of 25 miles. Named after a racing yacht by the Duke of Abruzzi, Mount Bona is one of the largest volcanoes in the world and remains active. Its geology includes rocks over 300 million years old.

Mount Blackburn - 16,390 ft

Part of the Wrangell Mountains, Mount Blackburn features one of North America’s largest icefalls descending from its summit. The mountain, named after Senator Joseph Clay Stiles Blackburn, is surrounded by numerous glaciers, including the expansive Kennicott Glacier.

Mount Sanford - 16,237 ft

Mount Sanford, the sixth-highest peak in the USA, is a shield volcano in the Wrangell Volcanic Field. Its massive caldera spans over 6 miles in diameter. Named by Lieutenant Henry T. Allen in 1885, it was first climbed in 1938.

Mount Fairweather - 15,325 ft

Located on the border of Alaska and British Columbia, Mount Fairweather is the highest peak in British Columbia. Despite most of the mountain lying in Alaska, it is only 20 km from the Pacific Ocean. Captain James Cook named it in 1778, impressed by its stunning symmetry.

After the medical exam

When your examination is completed, the doctor will either provide you with exam results in a sealed envelope or send them directly to the U.S. Consulate. IF GIVEN AN ENVELOPE TO CARRY TO YOUR INTERVIEW,  DO NOT OPEN THIS ENVELOPE . Instead, bring it to your visa interview.

Any x-rays will be given to you on a CD-ROM. You DO NOT need to bring the x-rays to your visa interview unless you suffer from tuberculosis. However, you must carry the CD-ROM with you when you travel to the United States for the first time. The medical report must be less than six (6) months old when you enter the United States as an immigrant.

Pre-Interview checklist

Please use the list below to determine the items that every applicant must bring to the immigrant visa interview.

IMPORTANT! All documents that are not in English must be accompanied by a notarized English translation :

A copy of your NVC interview letter (does not apply to Diversity Visa, fiancé(e), adoptive, or asylee/refugee applicants).

Unexpired passport valid for eight (8) months beyond your intended date of entry to the United States.

Two (2) color photographs of each person applying for a visa (5 cm x 5 cm). Please review our online photo requirements.  You must schedule an appointment to have your photograph and fingerprints captured at one of the five Visa Application Centers in India. Please visit ustraveldocs.com/in for information.

Confirmation page from the Form DS-260 Application for an Immigrant Visa you submitted online at ceac.state.gov/iv.

Your original birth certificate and a photocopy. If you do not have a birth certificate or your birth certificate is missing your name, your date of birth, or the names of your parents, submit the following secondary evidence:

  • A notarized affidavit executed by a parent, if living, or another close relative older than you. This affidavit should clearly state the relationship between the relative and you, how well the relative knows you, the date and place of your birth, the names of both your parents, and any other related facts; OR
  • School-leaving certificate, matriculation certificate or Certificate of Recognized Board from the school you last attended; OR
  • Your baptismal certificate from a church

Medical examination results in a sealed envelope (if the physician gives you these results) .

Original or certified copies of birth certificates for all children of the principal applicant (even if he or she is not accompanying) .

Applicants who fall into any category listed in italics below should bring these additional documents:

For family-based visa applications:

The appropriate Form I-864 Affidavit of Support for each financial sponsor along with:

  • NOTE: The IRS tax transcript is not the same as a tax return;
  • NOTE: NVC strongly recommends the submission of tax transcripts since they typically provide the information necessary for an evaluation of completeness of the Affidavit of Support and result in more efficient processing.
  • If you are unable to submit the IRS tax transcript, you may alternatively submit a photocopy of both the sponsor’s (1) most recent U.S. federal income tax return, and (2) all W-2s documenting the income reflected on the federal income tax return.
  • If applicable, you must also include an I-864A for each household member contributing income to meet the financial support requirement;
  • NOTE!  Incomplete or incorrect Affidavit of Support documentation is the most common cause for delay in visa issuance after the consular interview. Please review instructions from USCIS and prepare your Affidavit of Support documents carefully: Affidavit of Support | USCIS .
  • Proof of your U.S. petitioner’s status and domicile in the United States (photocopy of a U.S. passport, naturalization certificate, or lawful permanent resident card).
  • Evidence of the relationship between the petitioner and visa applicant (such as photographs, letters, or emails).
  • You are older than 16 years;
  • The police certificate you submitted to NVC is more than two years old; and
  • You still live in the country that issued the police certificate.

If you are registered with the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO), obtain a police clearance certificate from them.

If you are a foreigner residing in India but are not registered with the FRRO, obtain a police clearance certificate from your District Police Station.

If you are married :  Your original marriage certificate and a photocopy.

If you were previously married:  Your original divorce or spouse’s death certificate and a photocopy.

  • Divorce between Hindus and Christians must be documented by a court order (divorce decree), not a deed of divorce.
  • Divorce between Muslims must be documented by a certificate from the Kazi or head of the Jamaat.

If you have ever been arrested or convicted of a crime: Court and criminal records and a photocopy.

If you have had any U.S. immigration violations: All documents relating to those violations.

If you have served in any country’s military: Military records and a photocopy.

If you are adopted: Adoption papers or custody documents and a photocopy.

If you are the petitioner’s stepchild: The original marriage certificate of the petitioner and your biological parent and a photocopy along with divorce records for any previous marriages of either parent.

For employment-based visa applications:  Letter from your U.S. employer dated less than one month ago.

Interview Guidelines

Sending documents to the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai

If your application requires additional documentation, you may submit the documents to any of our 11 document drop-off locations . Do not send documents to the consulate by mail.

If you are requested to personally return to the consulate with additional documents or information, you must schedule a new appointment online at ustraveldocs.com (please select the “Embassy/Consulate Appointments” option).

Rescheduling or cancelling your interview

If you are unable to attend your appointment, please email [email protected] . There may be a significant wait before the next available appointment, so please attempt to attend the date already assigned.

  • For some family-based and employment preference visa categories, a visa became available within the month you have been scheduled by NVC.
  • DV applicants should be aware that visas are numerically limited and must be issued by September 30 of the program year. There is no guarantee that a visa will still be available on the date of your rescheduled interview. Please carefully consult the Visa Bulletin before you request to reschedule your interview.

Please note: You need to register your original NVC/KCC appointment online before you can reschedule it. Rescheduling is only possible on a date after your assigned appointment.

Security screening procedures

All visitors to the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai must follow certain security procedures. To avoid delaying your entry and that of those in line behind you, please bring only what is required for your interview in an unsealed plastic bag or folder. Mobile phones and most purses/bags are not permitted. We do not provide a facility for storage of any other items.

Accompanying persons

Attorneys are not permitted to accompany clients into the waiting room or to their interview. The following persons may accompany a visa applicant to their interview:

  • Special Needs Visitors: Applicants may bring ONE person to help if they are elderly, disabled, or a minor child (under age 18).

Immigrant visa fees

If you have not paid all required fees to either the National Visa Center or via the appointment website, please be prepared to pay these fees on the day of your interview.

Fees may be paid by submitting a rupee bank draft drawn on a national or foreign bank. The bank draft must be issued in the name of “U.S. Consulate General Mumbai” and be payable in Mumbai. Please note that if you are found ineligible to receive a visa, the application fee cannot be refunded. A complete list of fees can be found via  travel.state.gov .

Do not make travel plans outside of India

If your visa is approved, the consulate will keep your passport while we print the visa.

Receiving your passport:

  • If you choose to receive your passport through Premium Delivery, you will receive an SMS and email when your passport is dispatched.
  • If you choose to retrieve your passport from a pick-up location, you will receive an SMS and email when your passport is ready to be collected. You must bring an original government-issued photo ID and a photocopy of the ID to collect your visa at the pick-up location you selected online at ustraveldocs.com  (see Step 1 ).

After Your Visa Interview

A consular officer can make a decision on a visa application only after reviewing the formal application and interviewing the applicant. There is no guarantee that you will receive a visa. Do not sell your house, car or property, resign from your job or make non-refundable flight or other travel arrangements until you have received your immigrant visa.

If more information is needed

Sometimes a consular officer is unable to make a decision on a visa application because they need to review additional documents or the case requires further administrative processing. When additional documents are requested, the consular officer will give you a refusal letter that asks you to submit additional documents or take certain actions. The letter will include instructions on how to send those documents to the consulate.

Administrative processing takes additional time after the interview. Most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days. However, the timing varies based on the circumstances of each case. Before inquiring about the status of administrative processing, please wait at least 60 days after your interview.

What happens after visa approval

Passport, Visa, and Sealed Immigrant Packet – We will print your immigrant visa on a page in your passport. Please review your visa to make sure there are no spelling errors.

  • In some cases, we will also give you a sealed envelope containing documents that you must give to U.S. immigration authorities when you arrive in the United States for the first time. Do not open this envelope. You must carry it with you; do not put it in your checked luggage. If you receive X-rays during your medical examination, carry those with you and give them to the U.S. immigration authorities.

USCIS Immigrant Fee – All individuals who are issued immigrant visas overseas must pay an Immigrant Fee to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) prior to traveling to the United States. This fee is for processing your residency status and printing your Permanent Resident Card. The only people exempt from paying this fee are: children entering the United States under the Hague Process, returning residents, and people traveling on a K visa.

When You Should Travel – You must enter the United States before the expiration date on your visa, which is usually six months from the date of printing. Your visa cannot be extended and all fees are nonrefundable. The principal applicant must enter before or at the same time as other family members with visas. Unless they are eligible for benefits under the Child Status Protection Act, children who are issued a visa before turning 21 years of age must enter the United States before their 21st birthday to avoid losing their immigrant status.

Getting a Green Card – Your Form I-551 Permanent Resident Card, also known as a green card, will be automatically mailed to the address in the United States that you write in your visa application form. This is a very important document that proves you have permission to reside in the United States. If you plan to travel outside the U.S. before your green card arrives: Please consult USCIS’s and CBP’s websites for rules about what documents you need to re-enter the country. We also recommend you check with the airline to ensure you are in compliance with their rules. Once your card is issued, you should not stay outside of the United States for more than one year. If you do, you will lose your status as a Lawful Permanent Resident.

Children’s Issues – In the United States, children are required to have certain vaccinations before they can enroll in school. We recommend that you bring your child’s complete vaccination records with you to the United States. If your child is adopted, you have full custody because of a divorce, or you share custody with another parent, you should bring a copy of all applicable adoption or custody papers from the authoritative court in your home country. You will need these papers (translated into English) for issues such as school enrollment, medical care, and eventual citizenship.

Information for New Immigrants – Please visit the USCIS web page for helpful information on moving to the United States. You can read their publication “Welcome to the United States: A Guide for New Immigrants” online.

Diversity Visa Applicants - Additional Information

If you are interviewing for a Diversity Visa (DV), all the above instructions apply to you. Please schedule and attend a medical examination prior to your visa interview; enroll in the required courier service; and gather the required documents.

Below are additional instructions that apply only to DV applicants.

Bring to your interview

In addition to the documents listed on the Pre-Interview Checklist in this package, DV applicants should also bring the following items to your visa interview:

  • Appointment information printed from the “Entrant Status Check” on the E-DV website.
  • Documents showing that you have either a qualifying high school education OR two (2) years of qualifying work experience in the five (5) years immediately prior to application (for the principal applicant only; more information is available via  travel.state.gov ).
  • Payment in cash of the $330 Diversity Visa Application Fee for each visa applicant.

Review your DV Lottery entry

Prior to your visa interview, we recommend that you review the data on your initial E-DV entry. On your initial E-DV application, you must have correctly entered your marital status. If you are legally married you must have listed your spouse, even if you are currently separated from him/her (unless your spouse is a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident).

Additionally, you must have listed ALL of your living children who are unmarried and under 21 years old. This includes your natural children, your spouse’s children, or children you have formally adopted in accordance with the laws of your country.

Failure to have listed an existing spouse or children at the time of your entry in the Diversity Visa lottery will result in the denial of your visa and visas for your family. Any fees paid to the U.S. government in support of your visa application(s) are nonrefundable. If you failed to include a child who had already been born, or a spouse to whom you were married when you entered the lottery, you should not proceed with the visa application. You can review the eligibility requirements online .
