Joyful Journey Hot Springs – Moffat
Formerly known as the Mineral Hot Springs, Joyful Journey makes a great stop while passing through central Colorado. It’s located in a beautiful part of the San Luis Valley, about 30 miles south of Salida in Moffat, Colo.
The views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range east of the hot springs are remarkable. Year-round you can soak in a number of hot springs pools at Joyful Journey. They also have lodging on-site, ranging from motel rooms to furnished and heated yurts.
Mineral Hot Spring Pools
There are three pools of varying sizes and temperatures filled with hot mineral water. Temperatures range from 98° to 108° F. All of the pools are gravity fed with artesian water. The mineral water comes from deep within the earth and reaches the ground at 120 – 140° F.
Guests can choose between soaking in the cool pool, the medium pool also called the tower pool, or the view pool, which are 98° F, 104° F, and 108° F. There are also two jacuzzis on-site as well as private indoor soaking pools that can be rented for 90 minutes.
The natural mineral water that flows from Joyful Journey Hot Springs is some of the clearest and hottest in the state. Minerals in the water include boron, calcium, lithium, magnesium, and more naturally occurring minerals that benefit the body. There are changing rooms with lockers, toilets, and showers. Towel, robe, and bathing suit rentals are also available.
Lodging and Camping
Lodging is available at Joyful Journey Hot Springs. There are several types of rooms to rent in the hotel as well as yurts and tipis options. With four overnight options as well as having RV sites and camping available, no matter your party’s size, there will be something for you. It should be mentioned that the RV sites do not have water or sewer hookups.
While some units are pet-friendly, it’s best to check online in advance before making reservations. Overnight options include:
- The Lodge | Comes with a double queen, king room, or king suite
- The Casita | A private two-bedroom, fully-furnished home
- Yurts | Private, fully furnished and heated with a range of bed options
- Tipis | Available April – October

Love the view and non crowds like a lot of the CO hotsprings. The sans is a perfect cap off to the soak! I wish I could have gotten more answers on food, I have allergies and was not sure of my choices, when asked the answer was not very reassuring I'd have any options offered. I still say amazing place but wish I could get clear answer on food options so I could stay there.
We came for just the day, to soak. I had my 18 month old, which is awesome, because they are family friendly! There are buckets and baby pools near the soaking pools that you can pull water from to then put into the baby pool for the littles. They offer 4 different spring fed pools, and a few hot tubs, all with varying temperatures. There is also pool noodles for you to use, plenty of seating and lounge chairs available. There is a dry sauna and towels available for rent. The view alone was worth it, to just soak and take in the view of the San Juan Mountains. Wow. So healing! The noise level was manageable, I think people were respectful of the signs. The hottest pool does say quiet zone, and I had no issues with people not respecting this. There are water coolers if you need to refill your bottle, and cups available. The changing room was clean, lockers available and showers too. We packed a picnic, after our soak, we ate our lunch near the campsites, then made our way back to Lake City. Staff were super friendly.
Beautiful setting Clean pools w different temps available. Extremely chill. Not fancy. But perfectly comfortable. Rooms are clean and comfy. W really sweet back patios. Coffee in room is a bonus. Meals were really good!!! Loved the salads. OH! and my massage from Louise was beautiful!!

I had an OK experience here. The staff here were really sweet and kind. I took off two stars because it was hard to unwind and relax when the quiet policy was not honored by the other guests. The other guests were talking incredibly loudly during my entire 2 hours here, and I was really irritated at this. The natural mineral pools felt a bit artificial, with the swimming pool structure. I would say I couldn't really feel much of a difference before and after. My feedback would be to incorporate a quiet zone policy to allow all guests to enjoy quiet and silence while they are soaking, Crestone is a long way off from other places and people journey here to introspect and relax.
This hot spring/ spa is amazing! You can stay overnight in a yurt/teepee or camp or just come for the day and soak which was $15/person. There are 3 hot springs pools and 2 hot tubs which vary in temperature. The hottest I think was around 104/106 and it was my favorite. There was an amazing view of the San Juan mountains and it was a beautiful sunny day! I came on a Saturday so it was relatively busy, but not too bad. There's also a sauna which was full, so I didn't get to try it, and they offer some services like massage. I thought it said they had a restaurant online but I think it might be closed. They did offer chips and other snacks as well as some cold drinks! I really enjoyed this hot spring and it is worth checking out!

We are hot springs rats. We have been to hot springs around the world and the U.S. We enjoyed Joyful Journey Hot Springs. Pros- our room was clean. Nice landscaping and the hanging flower baskets were a nice touch. Springs were good temps. Cold water and cups for drinking available out by each soaking area. We enjoyed our complimentary meal. It was delicious. Friendly staff. The views! We enjoyed being able to walk inside the greenhouse. Cons- some if the area around the pools needed light maintenance-like there were some places where stucco was missing on columns by one of the pools and decking could have used a fresh stain. Of course, this is an arid environment which I'm sure is tough on exteriors. Some of the guests were loud and that detracted from the relaxation we were trying to achieve. Overall a great place. Will definitely visit again.

We drive hours to get here and it's been a great experience every time. My family and I have visited in both the winter and summer and it's truly a beautiful place. We have never stayed overnight but definitely considering it. The pools are SMALL and INTIMATE! Not like the public dirty pool vibes the other springs have to offer. It's around $15 a person to soak and it's so worth it! It's really nice in the winter because your eyelashes freeze. Thank you for always being friendly and accommodating. They have icecream too!
We found joyful online looking for yoga classes in the area! We just could not believe our eyes that we could do Yoga, eat breakfast and get an all day pass to the Hot Springs for only $28!! A quick call to the resort we spoke with a very friendly knowledgable receptionist. There was a little bit of a drive but well worth it to be in the San Luis Valley with a view of the Sangre de Cristo mountains! Breathtaking! Our yoga instructor Nancy was very welcoming, so nice & opened our eyes to a different asana yoga! We laid our mats in a beautiful room with a fireplace and proceeded to do a different kind of yoga, but suited to our needs and we laughed a lot and felt amazing!! After we were delighted with healthy options for breakfast, including an amazing gluten-free huevos rancheros. With our bodies and bellies happy we walked over to the hot springs. What a wonderful selection of temperatures. There are three main pools, two hot tubs, sauna and a cold plunge. We enjoyed every single amenity and loved it! The mineral content at these Hot Springs is phenomenal! Highly recommend!!! Thank you Nancy and Joyful Journey Hot Springs for a wonderful experience. We will be back! ;)

Hot Springs
Tucked away in the northern gateway of the stunning San Luis Valley, Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa is a sanctuary for the soul.
With panoramic views of the Sangre De Cristo mountain range, this oasis of tranquility provides an unmatched setting for relaxation and healing.
But this serene destination is more than just a picturesque location; it’s a holistic experience for mind, body, and soul.
From the mineral-rich waters of its hot springs to the numerous activities and wellness services offered, Joyful Journey promises a rejuvenating retreat.
A Glimpse into the Past
The history of Joyful Journey Hot Springs dates back to the early 1900s when it was a significant health resort accommodating up to 1,500 visitors.
With the cessation of railroad services in the San Luis Valley, the springs closed down.
However, it received a new lease of life in the 1980s when the Blumenheins purchased the property. Restorations began, including the construction of pools, bathhouses, and decking. Renamed as Joyful Journey Hot Springs and Spa in 1989, today it stands as an emblem of peace, wellness, and communal harmony.
A Sanctuary of Waters
The hot springs are the heart and soul of Joyful Journey. Arising from travertine springs at temperatures between 120°F and 145°F, the water is cooled and maintained between 98°F and 108°F in the pools.
Lacking the usual sulfur odor often found in other hot springs, Joyful Journey’s water is a sodium bicarbonate type and rich in beneficial minerals such as boron, calcium, lithium, and magnesium.
- The 98°F Cool Pool is tailored for those with low tolerance for hot water.
- The 104°F Tower Pool offers a comfortable middle temperature.
- The 108°F View Pool is reserved for quiet soaking, ideal for people with joint and muscle pains.
Accommodations: Where Comfort Meets Experience
The accommodation choices are as varied as they are comfortable. Hotel rooms feature private bathrooms and aspen-wood furniture.
For an earthier experience, native Tipis and all-season Yurts are also available. For those who prefer the life of the outdoors, RV and camping sites offer a more rugged option.
Pricing and Entry Information
Entry to Joyful Journey is affordably priced:
- Adults : $15
- Children ages 5-14 : $12
- Seniors : $12
- Day Passes and Membership Packages are also available for frequent visitors.
More than Just Hot Springs
Spa services.
Beyond the pools, spa services range from facials to deep tissue massages, starting at just $50.
Activities and Events
For those looking to add a bit more to their visit, the hot springs offer various activities and events, including yoga sessions, healing programs, and hiking among others. They even have a unique $10 Tuesday offer for day-long soaking.
The Grow Dome
While not a conventional tourist spot, the Grow Dome provides an intimate connection with nature.
Group Retreats
Whether it’s a yoga retreat, a family reunion, or a small wedding, Joyful Journey can host it. Their facilities can accommodate up to 100 people, making it perfect for events.

Joyful Journey Hotsprings Spa
Peaceful luxury.
We all hope, for ourselves, and everyone else, for a joy-filled journey through life. However, recognizing the unreality of a smooth road without bumps and potholes, or life's unexpected twists and turns, it is nice to know that places exist for us to pursue some of our joys over which we have control.
One more of the hot spots for hot springs in the San Luis Valley, where Mother Nature makes her warm and wonderful waters available, is the Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa located 50 miles north of Alamosa just south of the junctions of highways 285 and 17. As with the other hot springs in the SLV, the water requires no purification. Mother Nature takes care of that too!
WHAT'S THERE - Two artesian wells are the source for the water. One well is at 145 degrees and the other at 120. They are cooled and supply the soaking tubs at 108, 103, and 98 degrees Fahrenheit to satisfy the heat preferences of soakers.
On the grounds of the cozy surroundings of Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa is the spa building with a number of rooms for a variety of massages and treatments. There is also a dry sauna. An adjacent 11-room hotel with upscale rooms is attached to a small conference center/ yoga room surrounding a quiet courtyard. Nearby are six yurts, three tipis, RV sites and tent camping with a bath house, a guest kitchen, and a small geodesic dome green house for growing vegetables and other plants in this high-desert location. Guests are welcome to step inside and see how it works. Of course I did! What's not there is a restaurant/lounge or store so bring supplies. Events/meetings can be catered. Unique restaurants and a small, but well stocked grocery store are located in Crestone, 25 miles away. Check for seasonal closures.
A common question/expression "What are you made of?" (though grammatically incorrect as sentences should never end with prepositions) is generally a question that challenges our intestinal fortitude to overcome dangers and our own fears to complete a task in life. But has anyone considered the make up of the human body and asked "From what are we actually made?" in reference to the elements from the periodic table. Many people know the main elements - hydrogen and oxygen in large quantities as we are mostly water. Calcium, sodium, carbon, and nitrogen may be also on the list of common knowledge. And those would also be correct. But the rest?
"I am made from the dust of the stars, and the oceans flow in my veins." - from the song Presto - by RUSH
Ah, but what elements are in star dust and the ocean with which we share common 'stuff'? To complete the list - phosphorous, potassium, sulfur, magnesium, copper, zinc, selenium, molybdenum, fluorine, chlorine, iodine, manganese, cobalt, iron, lithium, strontium, aluminum, silicon, lead, vanadium, arsenic, and bromine. Surprised by some of these? Me too! These elements are all in varying quantities and all have unique functions to keep our bodies maintained as fine-tuned machines.
Now, compare this list to the elements and minerals found in the spring waters at Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa. The JJHSS list - arsenic, nitrogen, phosphates, boron, potassium, iron, selenium, calcium, silica, sulfur, sodium, flouride, lithium, zinc, magnesium, manganese. Sort of like soaking in a vitamin and mineral supplement! Short of this becoming a lesson in physiology and biochemistry, please visit http://www.joyfuljourneyhotsprings.com/minerals.htm for information about the beneficial properties of these elements for the human body.
Mother Nature runs a constant showtime that can be seen from anywhere in the valley. Sometimes the atmosphere is so dry during the day that the sky is a beautiful blue and only the sun moving west offers a show of light on the mountains as it sets. My favorite days are when, with lots of moisture in the atmosphere, the mountains become cloud builders. Small clouds develop in the morning and become larger cotton ball cumulus as they grow. They turn into larger clouds to which I refer to as large heads of 'Colorado cauliflower.' These begin roiling and boiling and their bottoms become blue black in color and rain veils begin to fall from these towering thunderheads. Lightning bolts and rolls of rumbling thunder complete the show over the mountains while most likely the valley will remain dry and sunny. Look for the rainbows! And the lightning show may continue well past sunset in all directions.
At night, be sure and have binoculars or a telescope. The stars are as brilliant as they can possibly be in the night sky. The high altitude valley and lack of light source pollution nearby make this an optimum spot for soaking and star gazing. Or, see the moon in one of its phases. The sky of the San Luis Valley provides meteors streaking across the beautiful darkness. Satellites orbiting the earth can be located and tracked until they disappear on the horizon. Airplanes are on their journeys somewhere and the Milky Way Galaxy (yes, the galaxy in which we reside) is quite visible with so many fuzzy stars in one of the spirals across the night sky that it is often mistaken for a thin cloud. Whoa! What was that? Oh, just a UFO on its nightly romp across the heavens ... joyfuljourneyhotsprings.com

Unwind at the Joyful Journey Hot Springs
Moffat, Colorado
Description
Added by LJ Dawson
Remote Colorado hot springs completely surrounded by mountains in the San Luis Valley, the world's highest alpine valley. Beautiful mountain views and mineral rich waters purify and restore.
Joyful Journey hot springs offers the full hotel and spa treatment, but in a valley where most people live off the grid, we chose the more rugged experience.
The yurts gather together like penguins huddling not far from the springs. The wooden slates offer welcome relief from the frigid valley weather. The dogs snuggled into the yurt, and we bundled off to the hot springs.
The three pools range from 98 to 110 degrees. We walked quickly out into the sub-zero air and hopped into the warm waters. The full moon hung high in the sky, turning the San de Cristo Mountains silver in the night.
The hot water washes away the stress of life. We reluctantly dragged our bodies out of the water into the cold, before bundling up and returning to the Yurts.
This hot springs stands as a well established but isolated soak in a magnificent alpine valley. It is a nice addition or home base for adventures from skiing to the Great Sand Dunes.

An oasis in the San Luis Valley
Joyful Journey is the perfect place to unwind after a weekend of camping, sandboarding, and mountain biking in the San Luis Valley! The three pools can hold about 10 people each comfortably. It wasn't too crowded even on a Saturday night over Easter weekend. Worth the $15 entry fee to relax sore tired muscles.

The health journey continues.
This marks a year since I celebrated losing 100 pounds by writing about my journey to good health. Find that post here: HOW I LOST 100 POUNDS
I wasn't sure I wanted to write about such a personal thing but was ultimately glad I did as many wrote me to ask more questions, tell me they were inspired, and to share their own success.
A year later I am officially down 111 pounds from the high of 256. My current weight of 145 is perfect for me. Good clothes fit well, sizes small to medium, 8-10, just right. My doctor is pleased with all my numbers. I am happy and healthy.
The other day I walked past a house I pass just about every day. The woman who lives there was watering flowers at her mailbox. As I passed she said "Your transformation is astonishing. I've been watching you and hoped to talk to you." Then she asked the usual questions, how much weight, how far do you walk, what do you eat? I gave her my business card so she could check out these few posts about my Health Journey if she was interested. I thanked her for her kind words and walked on. Her words resonated with me--my transformation IS astonishing to me too. Other than earning the title United States Marine, this is the accomplishment of which I am most proud. And that's saying something at this point in my life. And it only took 70 years!
A year ago there was one bit of advice I left out. I call it the "10% plan". When I explain it to people who ask me how they can lose a lot of weight, they all say "that makes sense". So I will share it today.
It would have been impossible for me to say "I am going to lose 100 pounds" when I was 256. But I did say "I am going to lose 10% of my weight". I tracked everything I ate in My Fitness Pal and still do, every meal, every day. And I walked around the block once and hoped I could get home. I started.
256 - 26 = 230 Goal #1. I made it and said "Now for the next 10%".
230 - 23 = 207 Goal #2. OK, now I am close to being in "One-derland", go for it.
207 - 21 = 186 Goal #3. I hadn't been this small in 20 years. Can I do another 10%? Let's see.
186 - 19 = 167 Goal #4. Wow, just 11 more pounds and I can say "I Lost 100 pounds." Let's go for that.
167 - 11 = 156 Goal #5 I was not sure I could get lower than that and felt great. It was 26 years since I weighed 156: October 25, 1997, I remember it so well and what I was wearing. And how I felt.
156 - 11 = 145 GOAL #6, Last and Final. Body Mass Index says I am "normal" weight. And the last time I weighed this I was 24 years old wearing my United States Marine Corps uniform.
There is a 5 pound "buffer" to being 150. When I eat out or travel for a week or more, I am often up 5 pounds. I get right back on track and in a few days I am where I am supposed to be.
It was FUN to use my 10% plan. I am a "numbers person", so this appealed to me. I set no deadlines, I just took it one day at a time.
It seems important to show that a year later I am still fit and healthy. I have not regained those "lost" pounds. By the way, they weren't "LOST", I worked them off every day with a healthy diet and lots of exercise. I pounded them into the pavement!
I still walk at least 1-2 hours a day, 7 days a week. Three days a week I work with free weights to build muscle. In hot weather I look like this:
I workout at hotels when I travel:
Recipes have been shared over the years. Find all of them under the RECIPES tab above. Some are holiday sweets, many are healthier fare. I eat smart and healthy 99% of the time. That's enough.
A few posts about my weight loss journey have been posted over the past year. For convenience, they are all available under the HEALTH JOURNEY tab above.
Photos tell the story best.
Here are my 4 appearances as Guest Artist on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims:
My FAVORITE PHOTO and my least favorite photo combined:
A year from now I will do another update on my Journey to Good Health. Come along with me. You can do it. Just start. It's never too late to change your life. If you want your life to be better a year from now, it starts with what you do today.
My motto remains: BE STRONG, BE PATIENT, BE HAPPY.
Feel free to share this with anyone who might want to hear it:

While i'm away.
I am just returning from a glorious CRUISE to Alaska where I taught 60 amazing students a great quilt. It will take a few days to get unpacked and write the blog all about it.
In the meantime, here are a few of my favorite posts from years gone by you may have missed. Enjoy!

Half square triangles two ways.
Half Square Triangles (HST) are important building blocks for many quilt blocks and designs. I use them a LOT and I bet you do too.
This latest project has a pieced border of HST, all from the same two fabrics:

Tiny stars two ways.
A recent quilt project had me making a LOT of tiny stars, 4" each. Known as the Evening Star or the Morning Star, I chose to make it from Flying Geese units, 1" x 2" finished. I have a TUTORIAL for making Four Flying Geese at Once.

Salida to Joyful Journey Mineral Hot Springs
Published with permission from the guide book: The Local’s Adventure Guide to Singletrack & Tarmac – Mountain Bike Trails and Road Rides in the Upper Arkansas River Valley by Nathan Ward .
- Featuring 36 Mountain Bike Trails and 18 Road Rides in and around Buena Vista & Salida, Colorado – beginner to expert, town to summit, smooth tarmac to extreme singletrack.
- Maps and Elevation Profiles for each ride, including altitude gain and loss.
- Local Advice on riding areas and seasons, where to sleep, where to soak, where to find the best pizza, the best coffee and the best bars in Buena Vista & Salida, Colorado.
Salida to Joyful Journey Mineral Hot Springs starts in downtown Salida, climbs over Poncha Pass and descends into the San Luis Valley to Joyful Journey Mineral Hot Springs, one of the best soaking spots in Colorado. It’s a fun ride with the challenge of a small mountain pass along the way. Once you’re over the pass, it’s a ruler straight slightly downhill ride to the hot springs. This is also the only ride in the book that heads south into the stunning and spiritual San Luis Valley, one of the last undiscovered gems of Colorado. The riding is great, the soaking superb, especially with a blood red sunset on the peaks.
Options: Take an extra day and make this ride into an overnight trip – sleep in one of the yurts next to the hot springs. They’re decked out for sleeping, but bring your own food because there is nothing nearby unless you like sagebrush and can chase down a jack rabbit. www.joyfuljourneyhotsprings.com
Trailhead Access: This ride requires a shuttle. Follow the ride description and drop a car at Joyful Journey Mineral Hot Springs – the shuttle takes about 70 minutes round-trip from downtown Salida. Drive back and park at the AHRA headquarters at the corner of Sackett and G Streets or in the public lot immediately west of Safeway at the corner of 3 rd and H Streets. The ride starts from the corner of Sackett and G Streets.
Location: Salida Distance: 33.0 Miles – One Way Riding Time: 3.5 Hours or More Riding Surface: Good Pavement Shoulder: Excellent Traffic: Medium, but Heavy on Holiday Weekends Aerobic Level: Intermediate to Difficult Elevation in Feet: Low 7,031; High 9,041; Climbs 2,071, Descends 1,346
Notes: In the summer, Poncha Pass can be hot in the middle of the day. Ride early or late to avoid the heat. After Poncha Pass, the only food and toilets on this ride are in Villa Grove. Only microwave food available at the hot springs.

Ride with care.
Bicycle riding is a physically strenuous activity with many risks and dangers. Hazards, natural or man made, whether noted in this book or not, can be encountered at any time under any situation. As a cyclist, we assume you know your personal abilities and limitations. This book represents nothing more than a guide to the trails and roads and is not meant to replace your common sense, your ability to navigate in the wilderness or in traffic, or your ability to ride a bicycle safely.
In addition, the mileages and routes listed in this text are only suggestions. There may be variances and you may get lost. We recommend everyone uses a GPS and topographical map to navigate. Most routes in this text are located on public land, but some trails pass through or adjacent to private land. Respect the land owner’s rights and obey all signs regarding trail use. The same goes for wilderness areas which prohibit mountain bike riding. Neither the author, nor the publisher, nor anyone else mentioned in this book are responsible or liable in any way for any accident, injury or any action brought against anyone traveling any route listed in this book. All cyclists and their companions assume responsibility for themselves. Ride at your own risk.
