Indian Army Tata Safari Storme with 165 hp, 400 Nm torque! 1500 vehicles included

The Indian Army recently recruited the Tata Safari SUV into their fleet to replace the ageing Maruti Suzuki Gypsy ’. After months of rigorous testing, Tata Motors bagged a contract that was limited to 3192 Safari Storme GS800 SUVs. Deliveries of the specially manufactured Indian Army Tata Safari Storme began a couple of months ago. Tata Motors has now reached the halfway mark having built 1500 of these special Safaris for the Indian Army. The 1500th vehicle which is a milestone delivery for the company was ceremonially flagged off by Dr Subhash Bhamre, MoS, Defence, Government of India along with Mr Vernon Noronha, Vice President, Defence & Government Business, Tata Motors, at its Pune facility. Thus far, however, Tata has only delivered 1300 but we can assume that the next two hundred are ready to roll out to various defence agencies across the country.

Tata Motors said that the vehicle has been indigenously designed to meet the requirements of the Indian Army with a contemporary, highly reliable and sturdier Diesel SUV. According to new information from Tata Motors, the engine of Tata Safari Storme GS800 has been modified too and produces 70% more power and 200% more torque than the standard. It will have an 800 Kg payload capbility. Tata Motors revealed the soft-top Safari Storme GS800 (General Service 800) at this year’s Defence Expo in Chennai. The soft-top GS800 is based on the five-door Army-spec Safari Storme. Here are a couple of new images that show the new vehicle in all its glory.

The regular Army-spec Safari Storme looks much like the five-door hard-top SUV that you can buy from an authorized Tata Motors dealership. The soft-top GS800, on the other hand, has only three doors and comes with a 2+3 seating layout. The 5-door hard-top GS800 has a payload capacity of 800 KGs but the three-door version boasts an 825 KGs payload capacity. The soft-top GS800 is equipped with features like a Mobile Emergency Communication system or MECS. This sophisticated communication system comprises of an antenna and a mast to enable one- and two-way communications in emergency situations. The system can also be converted into an LTE base station by plugging in an NIB (Network in a Box). Tata Motors claims that this advanced system can be deployed within 15 minutes.

Other features of this SUV include recovery hooks, a jerrycan, aircon, and mobile charging points. Akin to the Army-spec five-door model, the Safari Storme GS800 gets its juice from a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged engine that comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. 4×4 is standard and the motor outputs 140 bhp.  The Safari Storme GS800 soft-top version has a single cab design. It has a flatbed at the rear for carrying equipment. The 4X4 transfer case comes from Borg Warner and features the shift-on-the-fly function.

As for the vehicle itself, the Tata Safari Storme GS800 has been specially designed to meet the requirement of the Indian Army, and it comes with a payload capacity of 800 kg, 60 per cent more than the standard model. Tata Motors claims that the SUV was subjected to extensive testing across different terrains in India, for fifteen months, undergoing both off-road and on-road trials. Tata has also equipped the vehicle with special features such as ABS, recovery hooks, jerry can and fog lamps to suit army requirement during missions. The vehicle's engine specs haven't been announced, but we believe it's the existing 2.2-litre diesel engine, however, the company did mention that the vehicle now offers 70 per cent more power and over 200 per cent of additional torque.

Visually, the Safari Storme GS800 comes with the signature matte grille colour used by the India Army, along with a hardtop roof. All the chrome bits from the regular Safari Storme are blacked out or painted green. The headlamps project a horizontal beam of light in order to avoid detection of the SUVs by the enemy forces at night. The cabin, of course, is equipped with bucket seats, mobile charging point, Air Conditioning (AC), heating, demisting, power windows and ample space inside the cabin to accommodate six crew members comfortably.

Tata Safari Storme 2019 Verdict

The Safari has always been known for its presence and mighty demeanour and continues to do the same despite its design being decades old now. It is a spacious vehicle that will take a whole family of five with all their luggage without having to worry about broken roads or bad patches. But it feels too old now especially when compared to its modern competition.

Tata Safari Storme GS800 for Indian Army with Matte Green Paint: 1500th Unit Rolled-Out

The Army Spec Tata Safari Storme 4x4 SUV will replace the ageing Maruti Suzuki Gypsy SUVs.

Tata Motors has rolled-out 1500th unit of Safari Storme GS800 (General Service 800) made for the Indian Armed Forces from the company's manufacturing plant in Pune, Maharashtra. Earlier, Tata Motors bagged an order to supply 3192 Safari Stormes to the Indian Army to replace the ageing Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, that has been serving the Army for long now. So far, 1300 units of the 4x4 SUV made to tackle harsh terrains has been delivered and the Indian auto major is nearing 50 per cent of its delivery target.

Commenting on the roll-out of the 1500th Tata GS800 Safari Storme, Vernon Noronha, Vice President, Defence & Government Business, Tata Motors Limited said, "We, at Tata Motors, take immense pride to roll-out the 1500th GS800 Safari Storme of the 3192 order for the Indian Army. This modern SUV - Tata GS800 is specially customized to meet the requirements of the Indian Armed Forces. The continued faith bestowed by the country's security forces in Tata Motors is a reflection of our pedigree & aspiration to serve the nations challenging requirements on the front

lines."

A proud moment for Tata Motors today as we celebrate the rollout of our 1500th Tata GS800 Safari Storme for the Indian Armed Forces. #ConnectingAspirations pic.twitter.com/lC6tLeGqTs — Tata Motors (@TataMotors) August 25, 2018

The criteria set by the Indian Army for the vehicle selection were - hard top, 800 kg payload capacity and air conditioning and the Tata Safari Storme with a cool matte green paintjob successfully met all the conditions set by one of the largest armies of the world.

The Indian Army version of the Tata Safari Storme comes with a few differences as compared to the standard road

going model. Apart from the matte paintjob, there are black out lamps mounted on the front and rear bumper that projects a horizontal light beam. All these changes add to the stealth value of the Safari Storme.

The chrome bits like the grille, exhaust tips, etc. have been blacked out to avoid reflection. There’s also a large hook at the rear to mount a trailer and a canister mount on the rear fenders. The military version of the Tata Safari Storme also gets a radio antenna on the bonnet.

Apart from the visual changes, Tata Motors has made some minor mechanical changes to the car, including better underbody protection and beefier suspension. The engine remains the same 2.2-litre diesel unit that makes 154 bhp of peak power and 400 Nm of peak torque. All the army versions will come standard with four wheel drive and with both a low range and a high range option along with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

  11. Spotted this beautiful Safari Storme 4x4 GS800 in Bangalore today

The folks who wrote the article calculated it with storme as the baseline and magically arrived at 800 nm . The varicor 400 does produce 200% more torque than the OG safari . Now if someone multiplies 400 *2 and says it's 800 nm in the GS800 then that's just a badly researched article . The 800 in GS 800 means it can carry 800 kg payload.
