Visit Panama City Beach Ironman Florida

November 4, 2023.

One of the most storied North American races, IRONMAN Florida began in November, 1999. It takes place in Panama City Beach with the starting line at the Russell-Fields City Pier. Just as the summer season winds down, it’s the perfect time of year to visit northwest Florida—and the event is as much a destination vacation as it is a race.

The swim takes place in the Gulf of Mexico, where athletes will have a short beach run in between laps. Waters are typically in the mid 70’s, allowing triathletes to wear wetsuits. The two-loop swim course gives spectators a bird’s eye view of the entire course.

After exiting the water, athletes are challenged by a fast, flat, one-loop bicycle course. The terrain pushes the body in a way that most athletes are not accustomed to: the absence of rolling hills or steep inclines forces consistent pacing. Winds are typically light in the morning but become more challenging later in the day. With daylight savings time ending the following day, early sunset reminds athletes that the bicycle cut-off is soon approaching.

The two-loop run course, while flat, has many turns throughout the local neighborhoods. In the spectator-friendly area, thousands of residents and visitors emerge for fall get-togethers while supporting the competitors. The course is filled with breathtaking views of the emerald coast waters along the shoreline. After the second loop, athletes round the last corner for the final quarter-mile to the finish.

The Emerald Coast in Florida is a popular travel destination, and for good reason. With porcelain sandy beaches, emerald waters, and charming communities, who could ask for a better place to vacation? The Emerald coastline faces the stunning Gulf of Mexico, so it is no wonder the towns around are so beautiful. Many of them, such as Santa Rosa Beach, are also near huge wildlife preserves, which are the perfect place to take a hike or go bird watching.

While all the towns on the Emerald Coast are undeniably whimsical, each of them has a different vibe. Rosemary Beach, for example, has an upscale atmosphere, with classy dining experiences and cute boutiques. Alys Beach, on the other hand, has a laid-back atmosphere. Whatever you are looking for in a getaway on the Emerald Coast, there is a town for you. Explore the seven most whimsical towns to visit on Florida's Emerald Coast.

Harborwalk Village sign in Destin, Florida.

Located on the edge of the Continental Shelf , Destin is a Florida paradise for seafood lovers. Commonly referred to as, "the world's luckiest fishing village," Destin is near the gathering place of several fish. Some of the most common fish you will find in the waters here include blackfin tuna, grouper, amberjack, and king mackerel. Besides enjoying the fish, you can spend time relaxing on one of Destin's beaches.

A few beautiful ones include Henderson Beach State Park and O'Steen Public Beach Access. Enjoy views of the fish by snorkeling on the beach with Emerald Coast Scuba. You might catch a glimpse of rays, fish, nurse sharks, or sea turtles. After enjoying the shores of the Destin beaches, head over to HarborWalk Village to enjoy good food and check out local shops.

Rosemary Beach

The rustic Pearl Hotel on Main Street in Rosemary Beach, Florida.

Just east of Destin is a charming town known as Rosemary Beach. If you want to experience elegance on Florida's Emerald Coast, Rosemary Beach is the place to go. The town is full of boutiques and upscale dining experiences. Walking around town, be prepared to enjoy European-inspired architecture with cobblestone streets. For amazing views of the Emerald Coast while you are dining, check out the Pescado Seafood Grill & Rooftop Bar.

If you are a book lover, make sure to stop in at The Hidden Lantern Bookstore. The store has over 12,000 titles of books in different genres. Many of the beaches in Rosemary Beach are private, but there are some that have public access. One is at Camp Helen State Park. The park has one of the largest coastal dune lakes in Florida and is a site to behold. You can enjoy hiking, canoeing, birding, and swimming at Camp Helen State Park.

Park Square Center in Seaside, Florida.

One of the most whimsical towns to visit on Florida's Emerald Coast is Seaside. Movie lovers might recognize the town as the setting of "The Truman Show." Seaside possesses an unparalleled beauty, with pastel-colored cottages, clear, emerald-green water, and white-sand beaches. Enjoy the scenery by biking through town on the 18-mile Timpoochee Trail. Those looking to spend more time exploring the outdoors should pay a visit to Grayton Beach State Park. Just a mile from Seaside, the park has something for everyone. There are trails that go through the coastal forest to explore and a beautiful beach to swim in.

Closer to town, Seaside also has its own beach with public access. For a break from exploring the outdoors, visit the local theater in town, The Repertory Theatre, and see a show.

A walking path with water features and homes in Alys Beach, Florida.

Right on beautiful 30A, Alys Beach is a place known for its graceful architecture and quiet, pristine beaches. This is the perfect town to rent a bike and drive around Florida's stunning 30A area. Unlike many beach towns in the area, Alys Beach has a distinct Mediterranean -style architecture. Walk around with your camera, ready to take stunning photos of beautiful homes and buildings. Some unique landmarks in the town are the Alys Beach Tower and the Caliza Pool.

The architecture adds to the upscale, graceful atmosphere of the town. Around Alys Beach, there are cute cafes and boutiques. A popular café is Fonville Press Market and Cafe. The café has a charming outdoor patio with green and white striped umbrellas, and nearby there are beautiful beaches with porcelain sands to enjoy.

Aerial view of Navarre Beach Florida Water Tower on the Gulf of Mexico on a sunny summer day

The filming spot of the famous Jaws II , Navarre, is home to a tranquil coastline. This town is the perfect spot to snorkel in an artificial reef, go for a hike, or swim in the crystal clear waters. Just a short drive from Navarre's beach is the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refugee. The nonprofit works towards helping animals in the area and operates an educational program. Navarre Beach also has a Sea Turtle Conservation Center. The center has interactive exhibits so people can learn more about sea turtle conservation.

For those looking to explore local cuisine, the Navarre Seafood Market is an opportunity to sample the region's most popular cuisine. If you would rather go straight to the restaurant, check out Juana’s Pagodas and Sailors’ Grill.

Santa Rosa Beach

Aerial view of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, showcasing the town, beach, and ocean.

The magic of Florida's town, Santa Rosa Beach, is in its laid-back vibe and charming community. The town is near many parks and nature preserves that span thousands of acres. Topsail Hill Preserve State Park is one of the most unique parks near Santa Rosa Beach. Named for its Coastal dunes , the park has a rare coastal ecosystem of freshwater dune lakes. This is a great spot for hiking because of the variety of ecosystems.

Expect to see beautiful emerald waters, old-growth pine forests, sandy scrubland, dunes, and wetlands. Another great park to visit in town is Point Washington State Forest. To learn the local history and enjoy the outdoors pay a visit to Eden Gardens State Park, and afterward explore the historic Wesley House mansion and gardens.

Panama City Beach

View of Front Beach Road, Panama City Beach, Florida.

Some of Florida's most beautiful beaches are in Panama City Beach . The town has almost 100 public beach accesses and 27 miles of beach. If you find the beaches too loud, visit Shell Island. This is a seven-mile island that has no development and can only be accessed by boat. Nearby, St Andrews State Park also has undeveloped beaches.

The town is also known for its shopping and nightlife. The Pier Park hub is a 900,000+ square-foot Florida shopping center to enjoy. Whether you are looking to relax or have an adventure, you will have a great time in Panama City Beach.

Plan Your Visit

The Emerald Coast has undeniably beautiful white sandy shores and emerald waters. However, the coast also has whimsical towns full of opportunities for adventure and relaxation. In Santa Rosa Beach, you can take a trip to Topsail Hill State Park and see coastal dunes. And in Alys Beach, you can enjoy unique architecture, pristine beaches, and cute cafes. Whatever adventure you are looking for, there is something for everyone in these whimsical towns on Florida's Emerald Coast.

Mexico under caution warning from U.S. for spring break. 5 Florida beach towns to go to instead

Fort lauderdale, panama city and daytona beach not the only florida spring break destinations.

Portrait of C. A. Bridges

College students and families planning a spring break in Mexico may want to reconsider, according to an advisory issued by the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico.

The advisory , posted Monday, says that while many thousands of people travel through Mexico safely, Mexico-bound visitors should be aware of high levels of crime (particularly in the downtown areas of popular spring break destinations Cancún. , Playa Del Carmen and Tulum), sexual assault, counterfeit or ineffective prescription drugs, unregulated alcohol, high-priced hospitals and strict laws against drunk and disorderly behavior, possession of drugs, guns or ammunition, along with natural dangers such as dangerous beaches without lifeguards or warnings.

Well, if you're looking for a new spring break vacation location, the party did start in Florida.

Ever since a New York university swim coach took his team down to Florida one spring for some early training in the 1930s, the idea of spending a week or two in the warm has been a powerful motivator, building up to hundreds of thousands of bathing-suit-clad students bringing their volleyballs and fake IDs to Fort Lauderdale, Panama City Beach and Daytona Beach in the 1980s. Crackdowns on public behavior and stricter alcohol laws calmed the parties down a bit, and famed party town Miami Beach is pushing back hard against spring break this year.

But Florida still remains a top destination for people wanting a break from the cold, with March temps projected in the 70s.

If you're avoiding Mexico this year and don't want to bother with a passport, Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach are still top places to relax, unwind and enjoy yourself. But the Sunshine State has other locations to consider besides those annual favorites.

‘You are going to pay the price:’ DeSantis sends more cops to Florida spring break hot spots. Here’s where

1. TripAdvisor names Siesta Beach one of the best in the world

If you want the best, head to the west. Siesta Beach in Siesta Key, west of Sarasota on the state's west coast, regularly makes TripAdvisor's list of best beaches based on user reviews. Currently listed at No. 2 in the United States and No. 9 worldwide , the site praises the snow-white sand and small-town feel.

"Whether you want to relax or fill your day with activities, Siesta Beach delivers," Tripadvisor said on its website.

"Kick back on the white sand, go swimming in the clear water, play some outdoor sports, or simply admire the sunset — it's up to you. The family-friendly beach is easy to get to via public transportation, offers wheelchair access, and has plenty of parking, restrooms, and a small concession stand. There are a variety of shops and lively restaurants nearby, too."

Siesta Key, on the brilliant green waters of the Gulf of Mexico, is close to lots of restaurants and bars, a thriving arts community, and one of the largest state parks in Florida, Myakka River State Park.

Take that, Hawaii! : This Florida beach tops Dr. Beach's Top 10 list for 2023

2. Delray Beach a small-town spot with plenty of attraction

Delray Beach , a 15-square-mile city in Palm Beach County, was awarded the prestigious international Blue Flag designation last year, one of only two in the entire U.S., after meeting 33 stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria.

But what visitors will probably be interested in is the vibrant downtown area, huge number of unique restaurants, and, of course, the 7,000 feet of beach with a mile of it blessedly free from looming high-rise condos. Surf, sail, or just hit the water at the beach that "Travel Holiday" magazine named the best public beach in the Southeast for swimming. Or, for some less crowded sand time, head to nearby Atlantic Dunes Park, which features 450 feet of guarded beach.

When the sun goes down or you've just had enough for one day, Delray's Atlantic Avenue is a 20-minute walk from the shore with a staggering assortment of restaurants, bars, art galleries, clothing boutiques and antique stores. A few miles away, Delray Marketplace offers even more. Delray is also convenient to several other excellent beaches and attractions.

3. New Smyrna Beach is Daytona without the crowds, mostly

Daytona Beach is famed for its 26 miles of hard-packed beach and its worldwide tradition of unbridled spring break madness, but if you want a somewhat calmer version just head a bit south to New Smyrna Beach.

Students (and their families) congregate at the beach and hit the charming shops and restaurants on Flagler Avenue for a relaxing week of sand and surf, within easy driving distance of Daytona Beach, Orlando and Cocoa Beach.

However, keep in mind that the city imposed a youth curfew last year to cut down on disruptions, trash and drunk driving so it's likely there'll be one again this year.

4. Key West is still a party town

There's an amazing laid-back party scene year-round in Key West, so why not have your spring break there? The southernmost tip of the continental U.S. is just four miles long by one mile wide so once you get there transportation isn't a problem and live music and great food is never very far away.

Plus Key West may have the most activities to do when you're not actually lying on the beach. Swim, dive down to the coral reefs, fish, take one of the many boat tours or sunset sails, jetski, visit some astounding art galleries, watch the performers at the sunset celebration at Mallory Square, visit Ernest Hemingway's house and pet the descendants of his six-toed cats, eat at some fantastic restaurants, or just cruise Duval Street for colorful nightlife.

If Key West gets too crowded there are wonderful beaches and places to visit on the other Keys, and Key Largo is the diving capital of Florida.

5. Naples is a great family Florida spring break vacation place

Naples in Southwest Florida on the Gulf Coast doesn't get the spring break crowds that nearby Fort Myers does, which may make it more attractive to visitors seeking a more peaceful destination. TripAdvisor calls it a "polished, culture-packed city fringed by blue bays and sugar-sand beaches."

Packed with upscale shopping, parks, art festivals and museums, Naples also boasts nine miles of pristine beaches where you can enjoy the sun, watch for dolphins from Naples Pier (which shoots out 1,000 feet into the Gulf of Mexico) and get extremely fresh seafood at one of the many beachside restaurants .

But really, there are dozens of Florida beachside cities and towns that make great spring break destinations.

Check out the place named best beach town in the nation , or this one Reader's Digest included in their " 15 Best Beaches in Florida Locals Want to Keep Secret " list, or the other beaches TripAdvisor named the best , or the places Florida students go , or the Florida shores that Dr. Beach recommends , or the list of "hottest" spring break beaches .

Florida has 825 miles of sandy beaches. If you want a beach holiday, it's hard to miss here.

Bahama, Jamaica also under travel advisories

The U.S. Department of State issued a travel advisory for Mexico last year, with various levels of travel warnings including a   Level 2 advisory for Cancún for violent crime. Travel advisories have been issued for the Bahamas and Jamaica as well.

The State Dept. has listed 20 locations around the world under Level 3 advisories, meaning visitors should avoid them and reconsider, and 21 Level 4 places they say Americans should not go to at all.
