Norway Cruise Report & Planning Guide

disney cruise norway 2024

If you’re planning to set sail on the Disney Magic for one of its Norwegian Fjords or Norway itineraries, this guide offers some tips and info to make the most of your Disney Cruise Line trip! In it, we will offer general tips for cruising through Norway and share suggestions for some of the ports of call included on Disney’s Norwegian cruises.

Basically, this post serves as an alternative to reading our 7-Night Norwegian Fjords Disney Cruise Report, with all of the planning information from those posts pulled out and presented here. If you’ve already read that, skip this–it’s over 90% redundant. If you have a surplus of spare time, you can read the full report via the links below:

  • Day 1: Transportation Woes & Coppenhagen Arrival
  • Day 2: Day at Sea
  • Day 3: Stavanger
  • Day 4: Ã…lesund
  • Day 5: Geiranger/Impromptu Day at Sea
  • Day 6: Bergen
  • Day 7: Day at Sea

Note that our 7-Night Norwegian Fjords cruise itinerary will likely differ from future years. For instance, I know that next year, Disney Cruise Line is going to Oslo, Norway and one of them is even overnighting in Iceland (color me jealous!). So, while some port info might be inapplicable, general tips and info about taking a cruise to Norway should remain instructive.

General Tips for Norway

disney cruise norway 2024

The first thing you should know about Norway is that it’s an incredibly expensive place to visit. Of the places we’ve visited, Norway is right up there with Switzerland as the most expensive. Everything from fast food to transportation to fuel and even alcohol costs significantly more money in Norway. Even a meal at a place like McDonald’s will give you some sticker shock in Norway.

This is something we realized while initially planning a non-Disney Cruise Line visit to Norway. Originally, our plan was to go in late November or early December, with the aim of seeing Scandinavia’s wonderful Christmas markets, the countries blanketed in snow, and perhaps even the Northern Lights. We found airfare from Los Angeles to Oslo that was absurdly low (~$250) that time of year, and also saw low prices on hotels (since it’s the off-season; during the summer, hotels are just as expensive as everything else).

After finding the airfare deal, I had done a ton of research into the Norway in a Nutshell tour, and also how to incorporate Stockholm and Copenhagen into our itinerary. We had held off booking that trip, primarily due to some hesitations about the amount of daylight, cold weather, and other potential schedule conflicts. Then, we stumbled upon a deal on Disney Cruise Line’s Norwegian Fjords itinerary that we couldn’t pass up.

A big selling point with the cruise was the included transportation, food, and (floating) hotel. Although Disney Cruise Line commands premium pricing, when comparing the costs of the entire DCL itinerary to what we’d pay to do it ourselves in Norway, it actually worked to our advantage to do the cruise. This is a definite selling point for Disney’s Norway itineraries, from our perspective.

We did quite a bit of research for this trip, reading a ton of blog posts and checking out several books from the library (the best ones were Rick Steves Snapshot Norway and Eyewitness Guides Norway ). Learning a few Norwegian pleasantries can be useful and polite, but most Norwegians know at least a functional amount of English.

disney cruise norway 2024

We’d highly recommend consulting those books for generalized background about Norway (Rick Steves also has a few episodes of his PBS show that we’d recommend watching), but the amount of generalized planning you’ll need to do for Norway is limited. Transportation, dining, and hotels are all non-factors when taking a cruise.

A couple of things that we do think are important pertain to packing. First, you’ll absolutely want a pair of water-resistant or (ideally) waterproof shoes. We both packed our hiking shoes, and we’d recommend doing something similar even if you don’t plan on hiking. Norway is a very wet country, and just walking around the cities can be unpleasant without waterproof gear (it rained for about 60-70% of our trip).

We’d also highly recommend packing an array of layers. You’ll definitely need a waterproof & windproof outer layer, an insulating layer (think a down jacket), and a moisture-wicking base layer. We’d recommend packing multiple moisture-wicking shirts, as well as socks. These items are essential for a cruise like this.

My recommendation for the outer layer is something GORE-TEX. It can be very expensive, but it’s made to last, and most brands that use GORE-TEX have generous repair policies. (I had my last GORE-TEX jacket for ~10 years and sent it in to have holes repaired twice…before I was finally “advised” that it looked “very 1990s.”)

In terms of general planning for Norway, that’s about all we have to offer if you’re doing a cruise. Now, let’s turn to port-by-port planning…

Port Tips: Stavanger

disney cruise norway 2024

In 1969, the first Norwegian oil field was discovered at Ekofisk south in the North Sea, which made the Stavanger region a key player in the Norwegian economy. The oil industry in the region has made locals and Norway quite wealthy in the process (Norway’s wealth management and fiscal policies are themselves fascinating, albeit beyond the scope of this report).

Today, Stavanger seems to be a blend of old and new, with a small town university feel and also features modern and old world charm.

disney cruise norway 2024

My top things were the Norwegian Petroleum Museum (yes, really–it sounds really fascinating!), Norwegian Canning Museum , Old Stavanger , and hike to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) .

Based upon my research, we could do both museums and Old Stavanger, or Pulpit Rock and nothing else. While the museums sound fascinating, Pulpit Rock was the clear winner for me.

disney cruise norway 2024

Instead, I did some research and found what appeared to be a relatively easy way to do this hike on your own via public transit. That’s what we ended up doing, and if you’re visiting Stavanger on a future cruise, I’d highly recommend it.

Hiking to Pulpit Rock is a moderately intense, 4.4-mile hike with an elevation gain of ~1,000 feet. Despite Disney Cruise Line requiring guests be 12 years or older, the hike is appropriate for people of all ages who are physically fit to a reasonable degree. You will need hiking shoes, and I’d also recommend athletic attire and a hydration pack.

disney cruise norway 2024

From the ferry, Tide has buses that are synchronized, so it’s a simple matter of stepping off the ferry and lining up for the bus. All told, the ferry and bus take around 70 minutes to get you to the Pulpit Rock trailhead. From there, the hike is roughly 4 to 4.5 hours roundtrip (about the same amount of time up as down, albeit less intense down), plus however long you want to spend up at Pulpit Rock.

Due to the above time constraints and transportation schedules, it’s advised that you begin the descent from Pulpit Rock by 12:30 p.m. in order to make the last bus. Tide is one of two bus services operating at the trailhead–if you’re tight on time, you may have to purchase a ticket for the other bus. No big deal.

disney cruise norway 2024

These hypotheticals are unlikely. You should have an adequate window to make it up there whether you’re on the first or second ferry, so long as you’re in reasonably good shape.

Ultimately, I would highly recommend the hike to Pulpit Rock to anyone visiting Stavanger, Norway. I love to hike, and have done some incredible hikes in the Canadian Rockies, Yosemite National Park, Swiss Alps, and many other locations. I would put the hike to Pulpit Rock among the top 5 hikes I have ever done.

disney cruise norway 2024

Pulpit Rock was stunning. The view from the top was breathtaking, with a panorama of mountains ahead and Lysefjord snaking past the mountain plateau. It was one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever witnessed, and it’s easy to see why this is such a popular hike.

The hike back down was not nearly as pleasant as the hike up. If you’re hiking alone and are relatively sure-footed, this wouldn’t be such a problem because you could pretty easily bounce around, but that’s not simple when you’re with a group. If you had an empty trail, I could see a fit individual making it down in a little over an hour.

Actually, although I indicated the hike would take ~4 hours above, that was a conservative estimate. If you’re in good shape and it’s a dry day, I could easily see making the hike in 3 hours flat. Add in the transportation, and it could be a bit of a tight day, but we had ample time to do a few other things after we arrived back in Stavanger.

disney cruise norway 2024

Instead, we wandered through the city, before stopping at the Norrøna store, which was about 5 minutes from the ship. After that, we headed to Godt Brød Bakery nearby (also about 5 minutes from port) to get some school bread…

disney cruise norway 2024

Port Tips: Ã…lesund

disney cruise norway 2024

Following the fire, German Kaiser Wilhelm II sent emergency assistance, and dozens of out-of-work architects descended upon the city. Art Nouveau was the international flavor of the time, and the vast majority of the city was rebuilt in a Norwegian flavor of Art Nouveau. Ã…lesund now stands as something of a case study in the style, with it dominating much of the city-center.

Aside from just wandering around taking in this unique city (and also visiting the Art Nouveau Centre ( Jugendstilsenteret ) to learn more about it), we had a few goals for this port. First, Sunnmøre Museum . This is an open air museum with 55 old houses allowing visitors to step back in time as it showcases bygone culture and building styles. Oh, and it also has viking ships.

disney cruise norway 2024

Second, Aksla Viewpoint . Also going by the name Fjellstua Viewpoint, this is the #1 thing to do in Ã…lesund per TripAdvisor reviews. It’s easy to see why, as the photos I had seen from this location were stunning…and it’s free!

To accomplish the first and second items, we debated purchasing a City SightSeeing Hop-on Hop-off bus ticket. This company operates in most (all?) of the port cities, and we never ended up using them. We were dissuaded by some tepid reviews complaining of too few buses, but ultimately we learned that these are all very walkable cities. I’m glad we didn’t buy tickets for this bus, but your mileage may vary on that.

Third, the Majestic Island of Glorious Puffins. Officially known as Runde Island , I had read about the experience of taking a RIB Wildlife Sea Safari out to see these little birds . Doing a RIB (rugged inflatable boat) tour was on our list of things to do in Norway, but this ultimately did not make the cut for Ã…lesund due to a combination of cost (over $100), time, and alternatives.

disney cruise norway 2024

A ‘mountain drive’ might not sound particularly appealing, but there’s a good chance you’ve unknowingly seen photos of this–it’s breathtaking.

disney cruise norway 2024

I tried to rent a car in Ã…lesund so we could do the Path of Trolls ourselves. Not only would it be cheaper, but we could do it more efficiently and not have to wait for a group. Unfortunately, the Avis rental car agency in Ã…lesund was sold out by the time we booked the cruise.

Instead, we did the Disney Port Adventure, which we’d highly recommend. We’re both incredibly glad that we did the Path of Trolls. The tour was pretty efficient and our guide was knowledgeable and had a subtly wry sense of humor that was engaging.

disney cruise norway 2024

I’d avoid the version with lunch, but if you have no option, having lunch provided is not the end of the world. The buffet was surprisingly good, and–so long as you like salmon–you get decent value by Norwegian standards.

disney cruise norway 2024

The next stop was somewhere in Valldal valley along the waterfront, which was basically a stop for some photos, and a chance to get refreshments at a nearby cafe.

disney cruise norway 2024

After a meandering through Reinheimen National Park, we arrived at what I guess is the “peak” of Trollstigen, a visitor area known as Stigrøra. This area offers a sweeping view down on the “Troll Ladder,” its 11 hairpin bends, and the mountains in the distance.

disney cruise norway 2024

According to VisitNorway.com , it also houses a restaurant and the Trollstigen Road Museum exhibiting photos, models and hand tools from its construction. Our Stigrøra stop was only 30 minutes, which was a disproportionately low amount of time as compared to other stops and to the quality of this location.

disney cruise norway 2024

The view is unbeatable, and this is the place from where all the “iconic” photos on Pinterest, etc., are shot. This is one of the most dramatic mountain views I’ve ever seen, and is far superior to the lower viewpoint.

After this stop, we began our descent through the 11 hairpin turns of the Path of Trolls (or Troll’s Ladder)…

disney cruise norway 2024

Despite those tight turns, the Path of Trolls itself was incredible. I’ve done some of the best drives in the United States, including Going to the Sun Road, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Park Loop Road in Acadia, etc., and none of them compare to this. It was stunning.

disney cruise norway 2024

We continued on, with the next stop being at Troll Wall…

disney cruise norway 2024

After that, we began the 2-hour bus ride back to Alesund. It’s a scenic ride back, but after already seeing so much scenery, it might be better-used as some rest time.

disney cruise norway 2024

We vastly overestimated how long it would take to climb ~400 stairs, but it actually was only like a 10 minute commitment. It looks way worse from the ground. Gorgeous view–I just wish the sky were clear.

After that, we spent the rest of our time in port wandering around the city, mostly looking at the Art Nouveau architecture.

Port Tips: Geiranger

disney cruise norway 2024

Instead, we’ll share what we intended to do. The main thing to do in Geiranger was get back out on the water to get up close to waterfalls and go into narrower areas of the fjord. In other words, a scenic cruise that passes all of the famous waterfalls, De syv søstrene (“the Seven Sisters”), Friaren (“the Suitor”), and Brudesløret (“the Bridal Veil”).

The two main options, from what we saw, were kayak tours/rentals or RIB tours. We planned upon doing a kayak rental because that looked like the cheapest option, but had not booked this in advance for a couple of reasons.

First, a lot of the reviews indicated the rental companies would just cancel on you if they were able to fill their slots with official excursions booked through the cruise companies. Second, our top (morning) priority was hiking, and we weren’t sure when we’d be done with that.

disney cruise norway 2024

There were a handful of museums and other options in Geiranger, but nothing else that really piqued our interest. From our research, the highlight of Geiranger was the fjord, not the quaint village/town. To be perfectly honest, this was probably the port I was least enthused about before the trip.

Port Tips: Bergen

disney cruise norway 2024

Bergen was the city about which I was most certain when making our itinerary. Even though Bergen has a lot to offer, there was no real conflict or hard decisions that had to be made. I was pretty sure we’d be able to do everything we wanted to do in Bergen.

The first thing to do in Bergen is Mount Floyen and the Funicular . Literally, the first thing. “Rope drop” this; be one of the first people to get off of the ship and walk directly to the funicular.

Alternatively, if you end up sleeping in, you’re likely better off saving it until late afternoon.

disney cruise norway 2024

While up at Mount Floyen, be sure to do the short “hiking” loop that takes you out to the small lake. It’s a lovely, goat-filled trail. We spent around an hour up at Mount Floyen, but you could easily experience it in 30 to 45 minutes. Don’t just go up to see the view and immediately leave.

On your way there, you’ll pass by one of the other must-dos: the Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf. This picturesque series of vibrant, old-world buildings is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you’ll want to spend time there later, particularly in the Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene .

disney cruise norway 2024

The Norwegian Fisheries Museum is exceptional, and provides a ton of insight into one of Norway’s largest industries. It’s not a huge museum, but features a diverse group of exhibits making it worthwhile for all ages.

disney cruise norway 2024

Our next recommendation is visiting Old Bergen. This is an under the radar location, and the only reason we went is because a friend told us that part of Spirit of Norway was filmed here. Officially called the Old Bergen Museum , it’s really more of a village than a museum.

It features 50 wooden houses dating from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries all reconstructed to form a small town representative of life in Bergen. We walked to Old Bergen from the Norwegian Fisheries Museum, but taking public transit would be more efficient. It’s not a pretty walk.

disney cruise norway 2024

We did this because (to us) a stave church is iconic to Norway due to years of seeing one at Epcot. This one is definitely neat, and in a cool wooded location, but it does take some effort to get there. It was rebuilt in the 1990s, so it doesn’t have the history of some stave churches in Norway, but it’s the only one we could see on the cruise.

disney cruise norway 2024

We also dined at BarBarista , to try Norwegian waffles. This spot is highly recommended for both its eclectic decor and it’s amazing waffles. Make a point of eating here. Once again, we also stopped at Godt Brød, the bakery where we bought school bread earlier in the trip. We had school bread here again, and it was fantastic.

One thing you might want to consider is the Bergen Card 24 Hours . This provides free or discounted admission to a number of points of interest (including some above), plus unlimited public transit. It didn’t quite work out for us, but if we tweaked our itinerary just a bit, it would have.

We made this recommendation before, but it bears repeating: skip the CitySightseeing Tour Bus. Bergen is easily walkable, and part of the experience is strolling past the storefronts and absorbing the old world charm. The hop-on, hop-off might seem convenient, but really, it’s just a waste of money.

disney cruise norway 2024

The Norway in a Nutshell “tour” is a self-guided itinerary consisting of various forms of trains, buses, and ferries that takes you through the mountains and fjords. This is how we were originally planning to see Norway, and when I had planned it out that way, we were expecting to spend around 5 days doing this tour.

The frenetic pace of doing the Norway in a Nutshell tour in a single port day was what caused us to quickly rule this out. Plus, we still hadn’t spent much time just wandering around any of the port cities, and this itinerary would’ve been another port day almost entirely consumed by one activity. By this point in the trip, we were already contemplating a return trip to Norway, and it made more sense to do it then.

disney cruise norway 2024

I’m not even remotely disappointed by our itinerary–we had an excellent day in Bergen. I think it’s more of a hindsight is 20/20 type of thing. I just mention those other locations to provide you with some additional options if you’re planning your own visit. Those tips for Bergen wrap up our Guide to Norway Aboard Disney Cruise Line; as we mentioned at the top of the post, your itinerary might have different ports, but hopefully at least some of this was useful to you, nonetheless!

We flew Wow Air in 2015 from Baltimore-Washington (BWI) to London. There were 7 of us (myself, my wife, 3 young boys, and my in-laws). I thought WOW was fantastic. We paid for a carry-on bag for each and because we needed to make sure we sat with our boys we paid to choose our seats. All the employees were very nice. On our return flight we were delayed for a while because of a lightning storm over BWI and the flight attendants handed out complimentary snacks and drinks (normally you pay for everything). You have to factor the entire cost (baggage each way, seats, etc) to decide if it is worth it, but since we had to buy 5 tickets (now 6!) we could not have gone to the UK without WOW. They were the best budget airline I have flown. We just went to California and flew Southwest and I would say the WOW plane was superior (although I like Southwest’s baggage policies better). Hope that helps.

Thank you for this, and Merry Christmas! We are doing the Norway/Iceland/Scotland cruise next summer. We got super cheap flights on WOW ($300 RT pp) to Iceland, then doing connecting flights to Copenhagen / London (which were also pretty cheap). Wondering if you have flown with them?

We have not, and we are slightly weary as the reviews are a bit hit or miss. It looks like if you pack lightly, you can save a lot of money, though!

Complete 2024 Disney Magic Cruise Schedule

  • If you are interested in booking a 2024 cruise on the Disney Magic , we recommend either Small World Vacations or Undercover Tourist . We have worked with both companies for over 15 years and can recommend them wholeheartedly. It’s really a question of whether you prefer full-service booking or self booking. These staterooms often sell out fast, so if you see one you like, snag it quickly.

Interested in booking a cruise for a date or itinerary that hasn’t been announced yet? You can submit a booking request for a Disney cruise, even before Disney Cruise Line releases the schedule. Save yourself some stress and fill out the Small World Vacations Wait List form in advance and they’ll book your preferred cruise the first day you are eligible, at no cost to you! Plus, you can get up to $1000 in FREE onboard credit  courtesy of Small World Vacations! (All staterooms and cruises are subject to availability at the time of booking.)

Disney Cruise Line announces their cruise dates and itineraries for only a few months at a time: January through April, then May through September and finally, September through December. Once the new itineraries come out, booking begins just a day or two later, first to Castaway Club members (people who’ve been on a previous Disney cruise) and then to the general public.

The people who book earliest almost always get the lowest possible price . Sometimes there will be last-minute deals via the restricted guarantee fares or Florida Resident fares , but only a small percentage of cruises ever have those fares, and those fares aren’t always cheaper than opening day fares. In addition, early bookers get first dibs on staterooms, making it the best way to land one of the hardest-to-get staterooms like the Secret Porthole and Secret Verandah rooms. Lots of people know about these advantages, so on the days the new itineraries become available for booking, both the phone lines and website get slammed.

There’s an easy way to avoid the scramble to book on the first day the bookings open:  submit a request to Small World Vacations now. You just need basic information like where you want to go (Caribbean, Alaska, Norway, Europe, etc.), the date range you want, the kind of stateroom you want (inside, outside, verandah) and the names and ages of the people going. Let them know if you are a Castaway Club Member by including your Member Number and Level (Platinum, Gold or Silver). You can add other preferences or priorities as needed – early dining, lower deck, upper deck, not over a nightclub – whatever is important to you.  Their agents will review your request, contact you to confirm they understand your priorities, and then you can relax and let your personal agent book your cruise when the time comes. Your agent will provide their email and direct phone number, so you can discuss your options and preferences.

On the day the itineraries become available for your Castaway Club level, your agent will be up bright and early while you sleep in (or go about your usual day). If Disney releases a cruise that fits your criteria, your agent will typically go ahead and put a hold in place, thus reserving your stateroom(s), then email you with your cruise details and deposit information. You’ll be able to have your choice of room type and location and will lock in the opening day price. If later on you decide to change rooms on the same sailing, Disney will give you the opening day price on the new room , even if the price has gone up in the intervening days or months.

Even if you aren’t 100% sure whether you’re going to be able to go, there’s no real risk in getting a cruise booked early . Disney Cruise Line deposits for any stateroom types other than Concierge are fully refundable up to the Payment In Full date, which is 120-75 days before sailing, depending on the specific cruise and time of year. You have lots of time to figure out whether that cruise will work for you. If it doesn’t, you can get the deposit back or just transfer it to a different sailing date that works better.

The agents who handle cruise bookings for Small World Vacations have collectively sailed on more than 400 Disney cruises, and know a truly astonishing amount about all four ships, the various Disney ports of call, shore excursions and all the common itineraries (and many uncommon ones). Many of them are Platinum members of Disney’s Castaway Club, meaning that they have personally been on 10 or more Disney cruises! They’re happy to share their firsthand experience with the kids’ clubs, dining, character meets, entertainment, transportation, etc. In our experience, the travel agents at Small World Vacations are great at finding the best fares. They know all the tricks that will save you money, and they know the Disney Cruise Line inside and out. We’re confident that once you work with a really great travel agent, you’ll never want to book a cruise any other way. Read more about why we recommend using Small World Vacations to book your cruise!

  • If you are interested in booking a cruise that hasn’t been announced yet , fill out the Small World Vacations Wait List form and get on their Early Booking List!
  • Small World Vacations offers onboard credit of $50-$1000 per booking, good toward most onboard activities and extras such as spa treatments, shore excursions or even your bar tab. Small World Vacations also gives you full service, including a personal travel agent you can contact by email or direct phone number. Best of all, it costs you nothing to use them! • Double Dip Cruises

Repositioning Cruises

Unique cruises, adventures by disney cruise packages, disney vacation club cruises, independence day, halloween on the high seas, thanksgiving, very merrytime cruises (christmas).

New Year’s Eve

On sailings that include July 4th, there is usually a special celebration with characters dressed in red, white and blue outfits. There has not been a special fireworks show in the past, but sometimes on sailings in the Caribbean or Bahamas they move pirate night to July 4th so they will have fireworks on Independence Day. (There is no pirate night or fireworks on sailings outside the Caribbean and Bahamas.)

During this period there will be special Halloween events onboard, including Halloween-themed parties, storytellings, movies and elaborate décor, including The Pumpkin Tree, which magically transforms throughout the cruise. You will also find characters dressed in Halloween costumes, as well as a costume party for families and, just for adults, a costume contest and a Villainous Takeover on the dance floor in the nighttime entertainment district.

In the past there has not been any special menu for Halloween night itself, over and above what they do on all the Halloween themed cruises during the whole period, but there will be some special Halloween-themed treats.

Halloween on the High Seas takes place on the following sail dates:

  • Disney Dream : (Not yet announced)
  • Disney Fantasy : September 14 – October 26
  • Disney Magic : September 9 – October 31
  • Disney Wish: September 13 – October 28
  • Disney Wonder :  (Not yet announced)

In the past there has been a special menu on Thanksgiving Day, and pictures with Pilgrim Mickey and Minnie. The Christmas decorations will be fully up by Thanksgiving, and there will be a full set of holiday activities and events.

The following sailings include Thanksgiving Day (November 28, 2024).

  • Disney Dream : 5-Night Bahamian on November 27
  • Disney Fantasy : 7-Night Eastern Caribbean on November 23
  • Disney Magic : 6-Night Western Caribbean on November 25
  • Disney Wish: 4-Night Bahamian on November 25
  • Disney Wonder : 5-Night Australian on November 24 ( note: since New Zealand & Australia don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, we don’t know if there will be a Thanksgiving Menu. )

Typically, Christmas decorations will be up from early November through the final New Year’s sailing, and there will be special holiday events during that whole period, including meet and greets with Santa Claus and with Disney characters in special Christmas outfits. Some of the more elaborate Christmas decorations, including a huge, real gingerbread house or other gingerbread decoration, will not be up until later in November.

Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island, will be transformed with “snow” flurries, a Christmas tree and more. Be on the lookout for Mr. and Mrs. Snowman, dressed in their island attire. Plus, the island’s tram is decorated to resemble a reindeer, complete with antlers and a tail.

Very Merrytime Christmas-themed cruises will be offered on sailings departing between the following dates:

  • Disney Dream: November 14 – December 21
  • Disney Fantasy: November 10 – December 22
  • Disney Magic: November 21 – December 23
  • Disney Wish: November 4 – December 23
  • Disney Wonder: see Holidays at Sea below

There are unique special events and a special menu on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The following sailings include Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (December 24-25, 2024).

  • Disney Dream : 5-Night Western Caribbean on December 21
  • Disney Fantasy : 4-Night Bahamian on December 22

Holidays at Sea (Australian & New Zealand cruises only)

On select sailings from Australia and New Zealand on the Disney Wonder there will be holiday-themed entertainment and festive décor in the atrium.

On sailings from 24th November through 28th December, there will be a Christmas tree lighting with Mickey and Minnie. You can also take photos with Disney characters in their holiday attire.

On the 24th December sailing departing Sydney, Santa Claus will make an appearance on the ship.

There is a special party with countdown and balloon drop on New Year’s Eve.

The following sailings include New Year’s Eve (December 31, 2024).

  • Disney Fantasy : 7-Night Eastern Caribbean on December 29
  • Disney Magic : 4-Night Western Caribbean on December 29

Pixar Day at Sea

Marvel day at sea, star wars day at sea.

Pixar Day at Sea includes a Pixar film festival; photo opportunities with Pixar characters; a character breakfast with Woody, Jesse and Bullseye; a theatrical performance based on Coco ; a Pixar-themed dinner; a dance party with Pixar characters; and a nighttime spectacular featuring the Incredibles.

Pixar Day at Sea will take place on select Disney Fantasy 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral in early 2024. The Eastern Caribbean cruises are January 6, 20; February 3, 17 and March 2. The Western Caribbean cruises are January 13, 27; February 10 and 24.

Marvel Day at Sea is a special all-day celebration of the Marvel Universe. Special features include multiple Marvel character meet-and-greets, Marvel-themed activities for families, Marvel movie screenings, a costume party, special merchandise and food, and an exclusive Marvel deck party. There is also an adults-only dance party with Star-Lord and Gamora.

Marvel Day at Sea will take place on select Disney Dream 5-night Western Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale on January 7, 12, 21, 26; February 4, 9, 18, 23; March 3 and 8.

Star Wars Day at Sea cruises generally feature a full day of Star Wars celebrations, including a deck party, meet-and-greets with favorite characters, Star Wars -themed youth activities, at-sea screenings of Star Wars films, unique food and beverage offerings, and special merchandise. The night before Star Wars Day at Sea, Darth Vader and Stormtroopers march into the ship’s atrium for an Imperial takeover.

Guests are encouraged to bring their costumes and participate in the costume celebration held in the ship’s atrium. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique offers special makeovers on Star Wars Day at Sea. Kids ages 3-12 can transform into Rey, Kylo Ren, Leia and Poe. Adults and teens, can get a Rey makeover that includes a stylish dress, makeup and hair style or choose from one of four Star Wars-themed T-shirt options. All come with a personalized name tag, lanyard with medallion and magnet set.

No Star Wars Day at Sea dates have been announced for 2024. Star Wars Day at Sea appears to have been replaced with Pixar Day at Sea, but DCL has not made an official announcement one way or the other.

  • If you are interested in booking a themed Disney cruise , we recommend either Small World Vacations or Undercover Tourist . We have worked with both companies for over 15 years and can recommend them wholeheartedly. It’s really a question of whether you prefer full-service booking or self booking. These staterooms often sell out fast, so if you see one you like, snag it quickly.

Double Dip Cruises

A “Double Dip” sailing is one that visits Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay twice on the same cruise, or goes to both of them on the same cruise. Many people (including us) feel the day at one of Disney’s private beaches is the highlight of a Bahamian or Caribbean cruise, and this gives you a double dose! Both days follow the typical Castaway Cay & Lookout Cay schedule: off the ship at 8:30 am (depending on sea conditions), and all aboard at 4:45 pm. The same excursions and activities will be available both days, though if you want to do the same activity or book a cabana for both days, you’ll need to book each day separately. If you are going to Castaway Cay twice, you can run the Castaway Cay 5K twice!

In the rare event that the ship visits Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay two days in a row, the ship will not stay docked overnight. It will leave the island at the usual time on the first day and come back the next morning.

Repositioning is when a cruise starts in one port and finishes in another. These cruises can be a good deal, as they usually are cheaper per night than conventional round-trip cruises. They also tend to go to more unusual locations. The longest repositioning cruises are the Panama Canal and Transatlantic cruises, which are almost always the cheapest cruises (per night) of the whole year.

Unique cruises have an itinerary that is different from other cruise itineraries that particular ship is sailing around that time. They either visit an unusual location or locations or visit a unique combination of common locations. Repositioning cruises are all unique as well.

  • If you are interested in booking a specialty Disney cruise , we recommend either Small World Vacations or Undercover Tourist . We have worked with both companies for over 15 years and can recommend them wholeheartedly. It’s really a question of whether you prefer full-service booking or self booking. These staterooms often sell out fast, so if you see one you like, snag it quickly.

2024 Adventures by Disney Cruise Packages have not yet been announced.

The Adventures by Disney Cruise Packages include 2 Adventures by Disney guides available onboard and in port; special VIP privileges; private onboard receptions; unique onshore activities; early debarkation at each port; all meals, snacks and water while in port; a photo CD with all ship photographer pictures, all Adventures by Disney guide photos and an Adventures by Disney slideshow.

  • If you are interested in booking an Adventures by Disney Cruise Package , we recommend filling out a quote form with Small World Vacations . They give you full service, including a personal travel agent you can contact by email or direct phone number and we recommend them wholeheartedly ! Best of all, it costs you nothing to use them, PLUS they give you FREE onboard credit for any Disney Cruise Line booking of over $1000 total fare, good toward most onboard activities and extras such as spa treatments, shore excursions or even your bar tab.

DVC member cruises are only open to Disney Vacation Club members who have purchased at least some of their vacation points directly from Disney (rather than from another member via resale). Members can use their vacation points to book the cruise or can pay cash rates. Typically DVC cruises are significantly more expensive than similar cruises for the general public, but guests will be given a wide variety of DVC special gifts and will get to experience some exclusive member events including talks by special guests including artists, imagineers and/or actors from classic Disney movies.

Whether the DVC member cruise is worth booking is a personal judgment call. The extra events are difficult or impossible to experience any other way. The various DVC gifts are usually a mix of the usual kinds of tote bags, pens, and so forth you can get by attending a DVC meeting or buying a new DVC contract, plus at least a few special and unique items. Some people love the DVC member cruises and try to go on each one. Others go once and feel it’s not worth the extra money.

Disney Cruise Line has announced two Disney Vacation Club (DVC) member cruises for 2024:

  • May 18: 7-night Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona on Disney Dream
  • June 14: 5-night “triple dip” Bahamian cruise with two visits to Lookout Cay and one visit to Castaway Cay on Disney Magic

Adventure by Disney Pre- and Post-Cruise Escape Packages take place before and after select Disney Cruise Line sailings. These 2- to 3-night Escapes include 2 Adventure by Disney guides; hotel accommodations; multiple, daily excursions; special VIP privileges; all transportation during the trip and a photo CD with all the Adventure by Disney guide photos.

  • If you are interested in booking an Adventures by Disney Pre- or Post-Cruise Escape Package , we recommend filling out a quote form with Small World Vacations . They give you full service, including a personal travel agent you can contact by email or direct phone number and we recommend them wholeheartedly ! Best of all, it costs you nothing to use them, PLUS you could save up to $1,000!  Read more about the Small World Vacations savings offer here .

Witness Norway’s Incredible Fjords on These 8 Scenic Cruises

From more eco-friendly sailings to immersive journeys that will get you deeper into the culture and nature of the region, these cruise itineraries will bring you along norway’s beautiful coastline in comfort..

The country’s more than 1,000 scenic fjords, idyllic mountains, and imposing glaciers are among the many awe-inspiring landscapes you will see on a cruise in Norway . Add sightings of the aurora borealis in the dark winter months, cultural attractions in the cities and towns along the way, plus abundant adventure-filled outings, such as kayaking, mountain biking, dog-sledding, and cross-country skiing, and it’s clear why Norway is such a sought-after cruise destination.

Years ago, on a cruise in Norway, I met a fellow passenger who complained about the sheer number of fjords, saying that he would have preferred more variety of landscape. To me, as a frequent cruiser, these striking vistas are a must-see experience on the world map. Sailing into Trollfjord in the Lofoten Islands, you might even imagine that you see those elusive and fanciful trolls as your ship glides along shimmering water through the 328-foot opening of a passage flanked by towering cliffs.

Most Norway sailings operate between May and September, with the height of the season running from June through August. That said, you can cruise Norway year-round.

It’s worth noting that in 2018, the Norwegian Parliament adopted a resolution that will limit access to only those ships able to sail emissions-free in the UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord in western Norway; it will go into effect by 2026. While it’s not yet totally clear how exactly the regulation will play out, this could potentially impact which ships sail to Geiranger and Flam in the near future.

What you’ll see on a Norway cruise

Nature and culture are the star attractions on cruises exploring the western coast of Norway. Passengers will have dramatic views as they glide into fjords dotted with scenic mountain-backed villages and colorful homes.

Note that most Norway cruises do not visit the capital city of Oslo, so if that’s on your wish list you’ll want to select your itinerary carefully.

As for other itinerary highlights, the historic Hanseatic city of Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, is a must for history lovers, home to the old wharf area of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its dozens of 14th- to 16th-century wooden houses. Bergen also has a bustling fish market and some of the best arts attractions in the country, including the home of composer Edvard Grieg.

If your cruise goes above the Arctic Circle , you’ll be able to see the Northern Lights Cathedral in Tromso, which claims status as a Northern Lights capital based on its position on the so-called aurora oval, improving your chances of seeing the aurora borealis there. Less-visited Alta, also on the aurora oval, has such winter attractions as Northern Lights viewing while spending the night in a teepee at a Sami dogsledding camp—an experience offered by some cruise lines. In North Cape, you can stand at the northernmost edge of the European continent.

Geiranger, at the head of the UNESCO-recognized Geirangerfjord, stuns with waterfalls that include the 1,000-foot Seven Sisters. From Stavanger, visit Pulpit Rock for more cliff and waterfall drama or stay in town and visit the fascinating sardine canning museum, wood houses, and shops in the old town.

Flam has the star attraction of the UNESCO World Heritage Nærøyfjord, viewable on a one-hour steep ascent on the antique trains of the Flam Railway. Aesund is a pretty fishing village known for art nouveau architecture, while Olden boasts access to glaciers and glacial-fed waterfalls and lakes. Viking history is a draw in Trondheim, founded in 997 by Viking King Olav Tryggvason and known today for its culinary scene.

Best for comprehensive itinerary

The 684-passenger Azamara Onward will sail Norway in July 2024 on a 17-night itinerary from Oslo to Copenhagen. The ship will call at 13 ports along Norway’s western coast, including heading far north to Tromso, Alta, and Honingsvag, and will sail around the Lofoton Islands to Trollfjord. Less-visited places will include the small northern city of Bodo. The ship is designed as a floating boutique hotel at sea, with seven restaurants, including a well-regarded steakhouse.

Best for a classic ocean liner experience

Cunard’s 3,000-passenger Queen Anne debuts in May 2024, and during its first summer it will head to Norway on three seven-night cruises, round trip from Southampton, U.K. You can do two bucket list experiences at once— sailing on a real ocean liner (a vessel custom built for long voyages) and visiting the Norwegian fjords. The line’s classes of service will be in play, with suites guests gaining access to dine on exclusive menus in the Princess Grill or top-tier Queens Grill. There’s the Britannia dining room or upgraded Britannia Club for everyone else.

Disney Cruise Line

Best for families

Disney Cruise Line does select itineraries in Norway, inspired by the popular Nordic-themed Frozen franchise. The 2,500-passenger Disney Dream will sail to the Norwegian fjords in 2024, with Elsa and Anna likely to make appearances. Family-friendly shore excursions include boat making and seafood cooking classes, with reduced prices for passengers age three to nine. Onboard the ship, there’s a water coaster, Disney-centric Broadway shows, first-run movies, and the opportunity to send the kids to Disney’s Oceaneer Club so you can spend time in the adults-only Quiet Cove pool.

To book: 7-night round-trip sailing from Southampton, U.K., on August 5, 2024, fares from $2,772 per person (with reduced rates for children nine and under); disneycruise.disney.go.com

Cruise in Norway with a local operator—Havila Voyages—that is aiming to create a model for sustainable sailings in the region.

Havila Voyages Best eco-friendly sailings

Norwegian-owned Havila Voyages operates four new environmentally friendlier coastal cruise ships that carry both people and cargo between Bergen and Kirkenes, year-round. The hybrid ships run on liquified natural gas (LNG) and, for up to four hours, on 86-ton battery packs, for emissions-free sailing (the packs can be charged in ports with clean electricity). Done up in decor inspired by Norwegian landscapes, they carry up to 468 overnighting cruise passengers, plus locals, to 34 ports. Shore excursions allow you to leave the ship and rejoin at a later port to get to key attractions.

HMS “Gåssten”

Most intimate Norwegian cruise

Chartering the nine-passenger HMS Gåssten is not for the faint of pocketbook, but it will be an experience to write home about. Built in 1973, the small blue and white wooden boat started life as a Swedish navy minesweeper. Today, the boat boasts four comfortable cabins and an oak-lined salon. Sailings are from the colorful fishing village of Henningsvær and explore the Lofoton archipelago, known for its dramatic scenery, including soaring mountains. Hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and kayaking are among the activities offered. (In March and April there are sailings featuring remote ski touring from mountain peaks down to shoreline.)

Hurtigruten

Best for local experience

Sailing with Hurtigruten is a classic Norwegian experience. The company has been operating regular service up and down the west coast of Norway year-round for 130 years. The Norwegian Coastal Express ships stop at 34 ports, delivering mail and cargo and serving as transport for locals while carrying international travelers in cruise ship accommodations. The sailings are between Bergen and Kirkenes, up near the Russia and Finland border. You can book 5- or 6-night one-way north or south sailings, or 11-night round-trip cruises that do the whole 2,500-mile circuit. Since some stops are for less than an hour, a key is to also book optional shore excursions, which leave the ship and reboard further down the line.

To book: 11-night fares from $2,309; 6-night from $1,600 per person, hurtigruten.com

Best upscale expedition experience

French cruise line Ponant has expedition ships exploring the Norwegian fjords in summer and winter. In July, the 184-passenger Le Champlain sails between Bergen and Oslo, bringing guests to nature attractions and tracing Viking history with port calls that include Arendal in the south, a popular water sports spot, and sailing up the coast as far as Alesund, and including Olden. There’s also a stop at the historic Swedish city of Goteborg. One sailing, sold by Smithsonian Journeys, adds experts on Scandinavia as lecturers. When you’re not out exploring by inflatable Zodiac, there’s the bonus of an underwater observatory/bar, known as Blue Eye.

There’s been heavy miscommunication regarding Norway’s attitude towards fuel-powered cruise ships. So, let’s get this straight – is Norway banning cruise ships from 2026? The answer is both yes and no. Here’s the lowdown

Norway is more than the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund. There’s more to the Norwegian mantra than a functional social democratic system. It’s not all Vikings, Teslas and brown cheese. Norway also happens to have the greatest landscapes known to man, and it’s causing a problem. The country’s imposing fjords, soaring mountains and dramatic coastal landscapes aren’t just home to people, but also to vibrant marine ecosystems – not to mention the seemingly-permanent presence of cruise ships. You don’t need to be Sylvia Earle to understand that the latter don’t really mix. That’s why the Norwegian authorities have taken significant steps to tighten regulations. Some headlines incorrectly state that Norway is banning cruise ships altogether, but the reality is less extreme. When 2026 rolls on round, access will become tightly controlled, rather than dishing out immediate bans. Ships that don’t meet stringent emission regulations will be prohibited from the glacial waters that envelop Norway’s celebrated fjords, but there are plenty of cruise ships that will remain unaffected.

You can hardly blame the Norwegian authorities for taking such measures. It’s in their interest to protect the country’s natural treasures. While Norway’s grand status as a bucket-list destination draws millions of cruisegoers each year, the surging cruise traffic has brought environmental challenges that threaten those landscapes that make Norway so attractive. Yet, it’s a balancing act. Cruise tourism remains a big part of the economy , and banishing all cruise itineraries firmly into the history books would devastate local areas. The strict regulations set for 2026 onwards will, therefore, not evict all cruise ships from these ports. However - it will severely limit the number of recreational vessels permitted into Norwegian waters. If your ship doesn’t adhere to the new emissions policy, then you’ll likely be escorted by scary military types until you reach international waters. Chances are, you’ll be lucky to escape with only light bruising. Besides reducing the environmental impact, this action will preserve the delicate ecosystems, and promote sustainable tourism practices. Let’s not forget, the fjords are UNESCO-registered. And you wouldn’t drive a fleet of Range Rovers across Skara Brae , or use the Acropolis of Athens as an airport runway. So, what’s the deal? Does all this mean that the big cruise companies will cease to visit come January 1, 2026? Not exactly. It's time to dig deep and establish exactly what is going on.

Why Norway has environmental concerns

Norway’s fjords are not just scenic wonders. The fjords are sensitive ecosystems that support a rich variety of marine life; from fish and seabirds, to whales and seals. The influx of large cruise ships has raised a plethora of environmental concerns, primarily due to air and water pollution, noise disturbances, and physical impacts on the marine environment.

One of the main issues is air pollution caused by the emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx) , nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter from the heavy-fuel oils used by many large cruise ships. These pollutants contribute to poor air quality, which affects both the health of local communities and the natural environment. In fact, cruise ships account for almost 3% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Another critical issue is the discharge of waste, including sewage, foodstuffs, and ballast water, which can introduce harmful substances and invasive species into the fjords. The noise generated by cruise ships also disrupts marine life, particularly whales and other sea mammals, which rely on sound for communication and navigation.

To address these problems, Norway is enacting some of the world’s toughest environmental standards for cruise ships, especially those operating in its World Heritage fjords. The first set of regulatory changes will arrive in January 2026, with a complete ban on fuel-powered cruise ships expected in 2032 .

New regulations for 2026

The new regulations aim to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of cruise tourism in Norway. Key measures include the introduction of stringent NOx emission standards, limitations on the size and number of cruise ships allowed into certain fjords, and a cap on the number of passengers that can disembark in specific ports. It may sound untoward, but Amsterdam has already taken similar steps.

Perhaps the most ambitious regulation is Norway’s plan to ban all non-zero-emission ships from entering its World Heritage fjords by 2032 . This means that only ships that run on cleaner technologies, such as electric or hybrid propulsion, will be permitted to operate in these sensitive areas. The original all-out cruise ship ban was to start in 2026, but the proscription has been delayed by six years to allow development of new vessels for the affected cruise lines. The ruling will still apply to tourist ships and ferries under 10,000 tonnes come January 1, 2026.

These measures are part of Norway’s broader commitment to becoming a world leader in sustainable tourism. The country is pushing for innovations in green technology, encouraging cruise lines to invest in cleaner fuels, advanced emission control systems and other environmentally friendly solutions.

By setting these high standards, Norwegian authorities hope to inspire global shipping and tourism industries to adopt more sustainable practices.

Ambassador Cruise Line: Leading the way

Amid these stringent regulations, Ambassador Cruise Line stands out as a company that has adapted to Norway’s environmental demands, allowing it to continue operating in these stunning waters.

Ambassador is relatively new to the cruise industry but has quickly made a name for itself by prioritising sustainability and environmental stewardship. The line operates smaller, more efficient ships designed to minimise their impact on the environment, making them ideal for navigating Norway’s fjords.

The cruise line’s commitment to eco-friendly travel has been showcased by the technology used on MS Ambience and MS Ambition . The fleet is equipped with advanced emission control systems that meet Norway’s NOx requirements, reducing harmful air pollutants significantly compared to traditional cruise ships.

Ambience and Ambition also feature energy-efficient designs to reduce fuel consumption, and systems that manage waste more sustainably. These innovations enable Ambassador to comply with Norway’s current and upcoming environmental standards, positioning it as a leader in sustainable cruising.

2026: Cruise lines till sailing to Norway

While Ambassador Cruise Line is a prominent example of a company successfully meeting Norway’s environmental standards, it is not the only one. Other cruise lines that have adapted to the new regulations in Norway include Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages, both of which have been pioneers in sustainable cruising.

Hurtigruten is widely recognized for its innovative approach to reducing the environmental impact of its fleet. The company operates hybrid-powered ships that use a combination of traditional marine gas-oil and battery packs to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Hurtigruten has also made significant investments in cutting-edge technologies like LNG (liquefied natural gas) and shore power connections, further minimising the environmental impact of its operations in Norwegian waters.

P&O, Princess, Fred Olsen, Scenic, Cunard and Atlas Ocean Voyages are also permitted to cruise the area, to name only a few. For almost all the larger cruise providers, it's very much business as normal for now.

The future of cruise tourism in Norway

As Norway continues to enforce stricter regulations on cruise ships, the landscape of cruise tourism in the country is evolving. The emphasis on sustainability is reshaping the industry, pushing cruise lines to innovate and adopt greener technologies.

This shift presents an opportunity to lead the way in eco-friendly cruising, offering travelers the chance to experience Norway’s natural beauty without contributing to its degradation. By prioritising sustainability, Norway is not only preserving its own landscapes, but also influencing the future of cruising worldwide.

As for the all-out ban proposed for 2032? Well, between now and then, expect to see a new era of alternative-energy cruise ships being announced. Cruising to Norway will never cease, but the way we currently go about it will.
