How to Pack A Minimalist Travel Makeup Kit

I lost my bag the first time coming back from Europe to Canada and have since made it a challenge to always pack carry on and take less each time. One section on my packing list remains the same efficient size, though, and that is beauty.

I don’t like taking inferior products out of pure convenience due to size or portability, and I hate leaving my favorites out, too. Not to mention I have crazy sensitive skin and need to only use products that are nice to my face.

Not too big, not too small

I need/want different brushes for my go to look.

Too many products means disorganization.

First you need a multi pocket and compact cosmetic bag that will keep you organized. I use one from Sephora which I received as a gift with purchase. I keep my face products in one zipper, eyes in another, and tools in the front zipper pouch. The size doesn’t allow you to over pack and is sufficient for full face kit.

You also can wrap your makeup bag in clothing and add to your  packing cube  in your suitcase to better protect it.

Double ended makeup brushes. I am a woman obsessed and own more brushes than I know what to do with. Luckily, I can maximize my use of space with eye shadow brushes with a flat and fluffy end like the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette brush .

BH Cosmetics makes a great inexpensive and complete set of eye brushes which you can can choose a couple to throw in your kit. Dual ended face brushes are also widely available in many makeup stores and brands like Sephora , Tarte , and in the more inexpensive line from Sonia Kashuck at Target .

Search “depotting” makeup in YouTube or Google and you will find that it’s a craze sweeping the beauty world. I like Z-palettes, or if you fancy a cute custom made pallet from Etsy, there are many to choose from.

There are tons of tutorials on YouTube and blogs on how to make your own palette for as little as a few dollars with supplies from around your home or the craft store.

Use travel containers like these that are smaller than “travel size” for your foundation, lipstick, or other liquids!

My bulky glass bottle of foundation is taking up precious room in my approved one liter carry on plastic bag.

Swapping out liquid products for a powder or a solid. I love Jane Iredale’s Amazing Base SPF 17 loose mineral foundation to replace my coveted liquid foundation when I am on the road. Pricey at $52, but this lasted ages, had great coverage, and I did not have to bring an additional setting powder.

If you are wary about products with sifters, this one is very fine and not spill, or if you prefer a solid and cheaper option, NYX’s Stay Matte But Not Flat pressed foundation is available in many shades. Try to use a powder or solid where you can in place of any liquids.

I will simply perish without my favorite eye shadow primer/mascara/lip gloss, ect.

Samples are your best friend. Tiny things are cute and desirable in your carry on one liter bag. Things like primers and mascara, and BB creams obviously only come in liquid form, but they don’t have to be full size. Go miniature when you can.

If you want to be extra frugal, go to your local makeup counter and ask for a sample of the product in one of the tiny pots they provide.

Super helpful hearing how you organize things! My frequent travel requires makeup for performances (I’m a touring musician), but while I don’t use much makeup in real life, I also haven’t gotten my kit compact enough that it doesn’t drive me crazy for all the space it takes! I think getting the right bag for it will be important too…. Thanks for the ideas!

I found your site searching for pants for an upcoming trip to Iceland. We travel quite frequently. I had spent quite a bit of time researching z-palettes when I ran across a hack that’s less expensive. Below is a link to the Artbin magnetic needle case (range in price from $4.99 to $9.99 depending on sale). I just purchased 3 for what I could have bought a z-palette for. It’s a nice size. I’m pretty minimalist in my make up to begin with. But in one case I can put my eye shadows, cream blush, eye shadow brushes and eye/lip pencils . Let me know what you think. Oh, and the pans that are aluminum I purchased 30 of the adhesive metal bottoms for the z-palette from Ulta for $6.00

Here’s my own tricks for packing a travel makeup kit: *Invest in a selection of mini containers from the…container store. They come in a variety of sizes, very inexpensive & you can decant/repot your products there. *I personally use contact lens cases (brand new or thoroughly rewashed/sterilized!) to store moisturizer with SPF on one side & then concealer or liquid foundation on the other. *Limit lip products to 3: 1. A lipbalm (better yet, bring a multi-use product that can act as a lip balm, skin soother, cuticle balm, etc. like a Papaw ointment or salve) 2. A “your lips but better” lipstick/lipgloss 3. A more dramatic lipstick/lipgloss for dinners/night outs

Picture this: I'm diving into the concealer universe, searching for that magic wand to jazz up my sleep-deprived peepers. The container's as slim as a secret agent, and the wand's like my trusty sidekick—thin and small, but hey, size doesn't matter, right? Now, I went for Rose Ivory, thinking it's my summer shade, but whoops, it's a tad too light for my sunshine glow. The texture? It's like makeup silk, but the coverage plays hide and seek with my blemishes. Still, it's a cute contender in my makeup game, even if it won't join the winners' circle.

Ever since the pandemic, I’ve been relieving more on concealers and less on foundations . Somehow, I can’t stand to overwhelm my face anymore.

Of course, I still use foundation now and then, on special occasions. But, these days, my to-go product is an excellent concealer to cover the signs of my poor sleep. Hence, I’ve created this L’Oreal True Match concealer review because this product has caught my attention lately.

I’ve heard many of my friends praising its texture, and I wanted to see if it also works for me. Below, you’ll find the concealer’s consistency, durability, and other features, together with how I used it and the results I got.

It’s a decent (not impressive) concealer. I like its lightweight texture, but I dislike its sticky sensation on my skin right after I apply the product.

After a while, my face feels a bit smoother, but the most important downside of L’Oreal True Match is its light coverage power. This product won’t cover acne scars or very dark under-eye circles completely. On the bright side, I like its non-fragrance formula . But I don’t believe I will repurchase this concealer.

L’Oreal True Match Concealer Key Features

I’ll start by talking about some of the essential characteristics of this makeup product.

This concealer looks like a lip gloss to me because of its container’s shape. It’s slim and relatively small for my taste. I expected it to come in a larger tube since all the other concealers I’ve tried so far were bigger. Besides being intrigued by the concealer’s thinness, the wand-like applicator is also quite thin and small. But the size of the applicator doesn’t bother me at all.

Size and shape aside, wand concealers are my favorites since they’re easier to take out of the container and apply to my skin. It’s the same kind I’ve used so far, with just a few exceptions.

While the packaging and label design look nice, don’t expect them to be anything out of the ordinary. These elements are basic and simple. However, the product is easy to apply, and to me, that’s more important than how it looks.

One thing I don’t like is the shape of the wand applicator’s tip, which is too flat. The concealer I used previously had a more rounded-shaped tip; I liked that one better. But, that’s nothing to worry about because if one side of the wand is left without the concealer, all I have to do is use the product that’s left on the applicator’s other side.

My chosen shade for this purchase was Rose Ivory , but I think I should’ve opted for a darker hue since my face is slightly tanned in the summer.

Perhaps this lighter color works better in winter when my complexion lightens up even more. Also, I noticed that if I apply too much product under my eyes, it looks a bit white once I start to blend it. For that reason, I only use a small amount of concealer and build up from there, if necessary.

The good news is that there are many available shades, including vanilla rose, beige, ivory, golden beige, amber, honey, cocoa, caramel, and mahogany.

When I tested this concealer on my hand, I noticed its light and thin consistency. I enjoy using lightweight makeup products, but L’Oreal True Match felt too watery. Emollient textures are pleasant but not very effective in terms of coverage.

I must say that this part of the testing process worried me about how my makeup would look and if I could cover my pimples adequately. Next time I try another concealer, I hope to get the best of both worlds: a lightweight product that provides better coverage. I hope there is one like that out there, and it’s not just a utopia.

This L’Oreal concealer offers light coverage which got me disappointed. But, I like that I don’t have to use too much product on one application. There’s no need for a second dip since the first one is more than enough to cover my under-eye areas, the tip of my nose, and a couple of pimples I occasionally get.

On my red pimple, I applied a bit of the product a couple of times, but as soon as I blended it, the pimple appeared on the surface again. So at least part of the redness was covered.

It’s tricky to say whether or not this concealer is durable because of its lightweight texture and coverage. I’ve applied setting powder on top of it, so maybe that’s why it lasted longer than expected. But, I don’t see this product as long-lasting, especially on acne signs and during hot summer days when I tend to sweat a lot.

At the same time, I have sensitive skin, and I can’t stand heavy makeup items that clog my pores during summer. So, this concealer plus a setting powder could be the ideal combo on a warm summer day.

Besides feeling very lightweight on my skin, the concealer’s blendability is the item’s second most appealing trait. It’s highly buildable and blendable. But, to achieve the best possible results, you should start with a tiny amount of product, blend it into your skin, and apply some more, if necessary.

L’Oreal True Match’s watery consistency makes it easy to glide and slide on your bare skin. But, if you apply it on top of a primer or moisturizing cream, the gliding becomes significantly simpler.

My Experience with L’Oreal True Match Concealer

Before trying this L’Oreal concealer, I first applied a moisturizing cream all over my face. That way, all other makeup products blend easier and glide effortlessly over my skin. For today’s review, I didn’t use foundation on my whole face to see the concealer’s results without the help of other covering products.

Application Before and After

I’ve tested this makeup product on my arm and face for this review. On my face, I applied it under my eyes to cover dark circles. I’ve also tried to conceal a pretty large pimple that appeared around my chin area and has been bugging me for a couple of days.

First, I tested the product on my arm. And, it seemed like a great fit and blendable product. My arm is lighter than my face and has no noticeable imperfections. So, the concealer blended impeccably in this area. Still, considering this was only the first step of the process, I was nervous about how it would blend and cover my under-eye dark circles.

One thing that worried me was the effect I achieved on my arm. It looked like I wasn’t wearing any makeup product, as the concealer had disappeared altogether. That could also be a plus, based on how you view it.

My dark under-eye circles represent my biggest issue. No matter how well I sleep or do, I never seem to get rid of them. So, what I need is a high-quality concealer with excellent coverage. Another problem my face has from time to time is small acne breakouts with red pimples. Therefore, I focused on these two situations today when I tested L’Oreal True Match.

This L’Oreal concealer is a decent product with light coverage for my under-eye area. That could work for a daytime makeup idea. As you can see, it managed to cover part of my dark circles, and I didn’t have to apply too much product. Regarding its color, it looked a bit translucent, like the layer I used was too thin, which, believe me, wasn’t the case.

Another minor issue is how this concealer felt after blending it under my eyes. It felt a tad sticky, but that sensation went away when I applied setting powder. After that, my skin felt smoother.

Concealing my pimple was harder to do with this product. It offers light coverage which isn’t enough to fade my red pimple. You can see in the photo above that L’Oreal True Match concealed some of the pimple’s redness, but I could still see it after blending the product. That was a bit disappointing. If I could, I would boost the product’s coverage power.

On the other hand, after blending the concealer, my skin felt significantly softer, especially after applying the setting powder to mattify the moisturizer and concealer.

After trying this concealer on my skin without other products like primers or foundations, I’ve included it in my daily makeup routine to see how well it works and blends with my other makeup items. So, I applied a moisturizing cream on my face before using the L’Oreal concealer under my eyes, nose, and pimple.

After blending the concealer, I used a setting powder from Too Faced and a tiny amount of foundation to cover my pimple better. Again, I was pleased with the result, although I’ve used more effective concealers that provided better coverage in the past. With this one, without foundation, my face looks too light.

Price & Where to Buy

This concealer is affordable and can be found at numerous online shops. If you go on L’Oreal’s official website and search for this item, you’ll receive a list of e-shops that sell True Match concealer. I bought it from a local online selling platform. I paid around $9 for it. The tube I ordered contained approximately 0.23 fluid ounces.

You’ll find it at Amazon , Boots.com, and Chemist Warehouse retailers. I saw that the price varies between $9 and $11.5.

I also made a list of some other popular L’Oreal concealers.

1. L’Oreal Paris Infallible Concealer

The Infallible concealer is waterproof and provides full coverage. Moreover, it’s long-lasting, holding up to 24 hours. Full-coverage concealers are my favorite type of covering product. The finish is matte and flawless, and there are over 20 available shades to opt from. In addition, I love the product’s versatility since I can use it as a concealer, contouring item, or shaping product.

It’s a non-greasy formula that’s also transfer-resistant.

This L’Oreal crayon concealer allows you to create customizable coverage. You can choose from six available shades: light, medium, deep, and fair. Although I’m not a big fan of solid concealers, this one is buildable and blends nicely on your skin.

It works when applied on your blemishes, acne scars, and other imperfections. Unfortunately, there are only six available shades. It gives you a natural look, but there are some complaints regarding the company’s formula update.

Conceal it all, big to small. True Match Super-Blendable Crayon Concealer offers customizable coverage from the tiniest of blemishes to larger areas of imperfections.

The Age Perfect concealer is formulated with a hydrating serum perfect for dry skin. It’s a bit more expensive than the other alternatives mentioned above, but it brightens up your complexion and nourishes mature skin. Moreover, it comes in numerous beautiful shades and minimizes dark circles. Still, it may crease if you have deeper wrinkles. However, I like the applicator and how it covers dark spots in a very precise manner.

Finally, makeup specially designed for mature skin. Age Perfect by L'Oreal Paris, radiant concealer is formulated with hydrating serum and glycerin to illuminate and hydrate mature skin.

Alternatives to L’Oreal True Match Concealer

Here are some other great concealer brands to consider.

Before trying L’Oreal True Match, I had been using Best Skin Ever by Sephora for a long time. I’m a fan of these products, even after they rebranded the product and changed the name and shades. So it’s useless to say how confused and angry I was initially. But, the concealer offers great coverage, even though, at times, it can crease inside fine lines or wrinkles.

What it is: A medium-coverage, natural-finish foundation with a long-wearing, anti-pollution formula that hydrates skin for up to 12 hours and is infused with skincare benefits.

I’m not a fan of stick concealers, but Dermablend Quick Fix has many fantastic perks. The Dermablend stick concealer resists smudges and doesn’t make your face look cakey. Moreover, it’s a vegan formula; you can also use it as a contouring product.

On the downside, this concealer is quite expensive, and because of its solid form, you might have to spend a few moments blending it properly.

Long-wearing, full coverage makeup concealer stick provides a natural finish. Flawless coverage for a range of skin imperfections: acne scars, blemishes, dark spots, dark circles and bruises. Sensitive Skin Tested.

Question: How Should I Choose the Correct L’Oreal Concealer Shade?

Answer: You must determine your complexion color. That consists of two components: your skin color and its undertone. Skin colors range between fair and deep, while undertones can be cool, neutral, or warm. Next, look at your veins’ color. If yours are green, you have warm-toned skin, while blue and purple veins indicate cold-toned skin. I’m looking at my veins right now, and I’m unsure of their color. It seems a mixed combo, so maybe my skin is neutral.

Question: Does L’Oreal True Match Contain Oils?

Answer: Nope; the True Match concealer is lightweight and oil-free. It provides light coverage, and the formula is excellent for sensitive skin, being non-comedogenic.

Answer: Well, this is a tricky one. It depends on your skin type, your desired coverage level, and the type of finish you want to achieve with the concealer. For example, true Match provides a glossy finish and lightweight coverage. So, it’s better for those with dry skin. Meanwhile, L’Oreal Infallible helps those with oily skin to achieve a matte finish. I love makeup products that offer a matte finish since my skin is mixed, and my forehead and nose tend to get oily.

L’Oreal True Match Concealer Review: Bottom Line

L’Oreal True Match is a decent and affordable concealer with a blendable consistency. However, its coverage power lacks strength, and there’s a high chance you might order the wrong color because the way it looks in the photos differs a bit from how it appears when applied to your skin.

Therefore, I don’t think I will use this concealer on its own. Instead, I will include it in my daytime makeup routine, together with foundation and other products. I believe this product is a great choice for those with great skin and fewer skin issues. This product might work effectively if you don’t have acne scars, pimples, and dark under-eye circles.

What is Balayage?

In French, the word Balayage means to sweep. Balayage highlights are typically painted onto the hair using a brush – applying where you think will look best. The goal is to leave your hair with naturally blended highlights and dimension.

What is the difference between Highlights and Balayage?

Balayage is a freehand technique whereas Highlights traditionally use foiling or cap techniques. With Balayage, the result is more natural and with foils, you get a more uniform finish.

How long does Balayage last?

Since the nature of Balayage is achieving naturally blended highlights, the process results in a more natural-looking grow out. Because of this, your Balayage can last up to 6 months, excluding any additional lightening or cutting.

How can I maintain my Balayage?
