Australia to face India, England more often as International Cricket Council announces men's Future Tours Program

Australia will play India and England more regularly in men's cricket after the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed its Future Tours Program.

Key points:

  • Australia and India will meet in two five-Test series as part of the ICC's program
  • There will be a Test series in India between the two nations in early 2027
  • The ICC's program features England touring Australia for non-Test fixtures

The men's global calendar — running from April 2023 to March 2027 — was released on Wednesday, with Australia signalling its intent for more matches against India and England.

One of the two nations will tour Australia for at least one format in most summers going forward, while Test series against India will extend to five matches.

Australia's five-decade stranglehold on an uninterrupted men’s domestic cricket summer will also end in the 2026-27 season with a January-February Test tour of India.

Australia will host West Indies in back-to-back Test summers in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons due to the ICC's World Test Championship draw.

A winter Test will also return in August 2026 against Afghanistan, while January will now be devoid of Australian men's white-ball internationals to benefit the Big Bash League.

But it is the 2026-27 season where fans will notice the most significant change.

Australia will host New Zealand for a three-Test series over the traditional Christmas-New Year period before heading to India for five Tests in January and February.

The Australians will then return for two Tests against Bangladesh at home in March, which will clash with the start of the major football seasons.

Those matches will be the latest men's Tests played in Australia since 1979, while it will also mark the first time Australia has played a red-ball match overseas in January since 1970.

"This is the potential trade-off because in other years we have an increased level of content against our major [visitors]," Cricket Australia's (CA) head of operations Peter Roach said.

"It would be less complicated if we had four Tests against India because we could have squeezed another two tests in before we left.

"With India, that is the window they identified as their preferred, just as we identify our preferred as December-January.

"We need to commit to reciprocating. It's different, but we also know it's still cricket season.

"When you look at it in totality, it's still a great summer of cricket."

The change will create significant challenges for CA, given there will be a desire from each ground to host in the December-January period rather than March.

But Roach said each of the major venues would now host Tests against India on future tours as one of the chief upsides.

"It will also create some opportunities for cricket to look at itself in a non-traditional way," Roach said.

"This is still cricket season, every cricket competition around the country is still being played in March.

"It is still our season and we will make a fist of making those two tests great."

Meanwhile, Australia has made a commitment to playing more white-ball series against Pakistan and Bangladesh, seeing both as the next big growing cricket economies.

On the whole there are less ODIs for the men, with just 15 scheduled in the next four years in Australia compared to the 12 that were initially set for this upcoming summer alone.

Also of note is the fact there are exactly five Tests in each home summer, meaning the likes of Hobart and Canberra will have to wait some time for their next Tests.

2024/25 Summer of Cricket

Don't take our word for it... See what our clients have to say!

Everything worked perfectly! The hotel was good, it was a short walk down a nearby lane to a tram stop on Collins St, it was a few minutes on the tram to the Jolimont/MCG stop, and then a short walk to the MCG.  Our gate was the first one we came to, entry was a breeze, walked straight onto an escalator and got off near the members area, and then a very short walk to the seats.  As we sat down on the morning of the first day, I was just amazed at how easy it had all been. Great seats, too. Rob

Will definitely do another trip with you guys in the future. Big thumbs up to all CATO staff, accommodation on tour was brilliant, organisation of all the travel was brilliant, guest speakers and functions also brilliant. I will be highly recommending that anyone thinking of a cricket tour do it with CATO. Daryl

Just emailing to pass our compliments about the service we received. My wife has some skin problems in the sun, so I discussed situation with your incredible staff and they went above and beyond to help find some shade for us. Please pass our thanks, I've been all over watching sport and your ladies are the most fantastically caring people I've ever had dealings with. John

We had an amazing time and it was a trip that I will never ever forget. Waking up to my seats on Day 1 and seeing the old pavilion for the first time gave me goose bumps and was incredible. Thanks again for your help with the last minute changes which put me at ease knowing you had that under control. Now that I know what you guys do and how good you are, you can guarantee that I will come back in the coming years to book something in! (I think The Oval in 4 years is on the cards! Steve

Just a short note to recognise the fantastic job you did organising aisle seating at both Headingley and Old Trafford for both myself and my mother. THANK YOU! The seats were fabulous. I appreciate that catering for our needs wouldn’t have been easy. We had a really good holiday made all the better because of people such as yourself. James

Despite those couple of wet days, we had a fantastic time. A great group of people, an excellent tour guide and terrific Tests both at Edgbaston and Lords. We just wish we were there for the Third Test – to see England bowled out for 67. Glenn

It was the experience of a lifetime and a privilege to see Steve Smith. We had great seats thanks to you and they got better each day, culminating in the best seats on the last day. Deborah

The tour was absolutely fantastic. CATO organised a great tour, very professional and nothing was ever a problem to yourselves or our tour director. Thank you for an amazing time. I look forward to travelling with CATO again. Deb

I'd like to pass on my gratitude regarding the most recent Sydney test match. The tickets at the SCG were absolutely fantastic. The Wednesday night function involving Glenn McGrath and company was very engaging and being able to hear from players and commentators both past and present was an absolute highlight. Please keep up the great work. I have done other sports tours in the past and by far this was the absolute smoothest I have ever experienced. Anthony

Thank you very much for organising such wonderful test match packages. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our Ashes experiences. You and your staff have done a great job! We will be using CATO again in the future. Sue

I would like to thank you very much for arranging a fantastic tour. All the Tour Leaders were extremely helpful on all occasions and nothing was ever a problem. The functions, dinners, hotels & transfers were all great. My travelling friend and l met some terrific people on tour and it certainly was a great experience as you promised. We can now cross off the bucket list the dream of watching an Ashes Test at Lords. Thank you again for a fantastic tour. Jeff

The Minnu Mani-led side managed to register their first victory on this tour to Australia, courtesy of a thrashing 171-run victory in the 3rd One Day. The victory would have definitely lifted the morale in the Indian camp ahead of the only four-day, red-ball fixture of this tour.

Tahlia McGrath led the home side in the white-ball formats, however, Charli Knott took over the leadership duties in the red-ball format courtesy of the absence of the Australian vice-captain. The Australian A skipper Charli Knott won the toss and opted to bat first at the Kerrydale Oval, Gold Coast.

The Australian A openers Georgia Voll and Emma de Broughe got their side off to a good start with a solid 56-run opening partnership. Priya Mishra cleaned up Emma de Broughe to provide the first breakthrough for India A. The home side lost a couple of wickets in quick succession, including the wicket of their skipper Charli Knott to bring India A firmly back into the contest.

Tess Flintoff joined Georgia Voll at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 26-run partnership for the 4th wicket to take their side close to the 100-run mark. Australia A suffered a mini collapse as they lost their next three wickets for just 17 runs. Kate Peterson joined Maitlan Brown at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 27-run partnership for the 7th wicket. Skipper Minnu Mani picked up the wicket of Maitlan Brown to provide the 7th breakthrough for India A. Lilly Miles soon followed her back to the pavilion to provide the 8th breakthrough for India A.

Grace Parsons joined Kate Peterson at the crease and the duo stitched another crucial 60-run partnership for the 9th wicket to take their side past the 200-run mark. Skipper Minnu Mani returned and picked up the wicket of Grace Parsons to provide the 9th breakthrough for her side. Australia A were eventually bundled out for 212 runs in 65.6 overs. Georgia Voll (71 off 95 balls), Grace Parsons (35 off 55 balls), Maitlan Brown (30 off 49 balls), and Kate Peterson (26 off 87 balls) were the top performers with the bat for Australia A.

Skipper Minnu Mani (21-2-58-5), Priya Mishra (20.5-3-58-4), and Mannat Kashyap (11-1-35-1) were the top performers with the ball for India A. India A got off to a poor start as they lost the wicket of their opening batter Priya Punia in the 7th over of the innings. Maitlan Brown provided the first breakthrough for Australia A. Shubha Satheesh joined Shweta Sehrawat at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 34-run partnership for the 2nd wicket to take their side close to the 50-run mark.

Kate Peterson picked up the wicket of Shubha Satheesh to provide the 2nd breakthrough for her side. Tejal Hasabnis joined Shweta Sehrawat at the crease and the duo took their side into a solid position with another crucial, unbeaten 53-run partnership to take their side to the 100-run mark. The duo saw the day through with India A trailing by 112 runs at the end of the first day’s play.

Sri Lanka is amazing, so much so Lonely Planet labelled her the number one place to visit in 2019, just before a lowly germ kiboshed that advantage.

Sri Lanka has had a rocky road since, so thankfully we can help them more with another rousing adventure around their beautiful isle.

Two tests are never enough, no matter whom it's against. How is a weaker side going to get better if not being flogged by, or having the opportunity to challenge, a stronger side?

Still, we do our best with the schedules given and 2025 will be no different when we will showcase the best of Sri Lanka in our own unique, inimitable way, with personality and love of cricket & travel.

Join us before the 1st Test as we drive coast to coast across the land or our, thanks to our climb into the hill country, ' Sea-Tea-Sea Road Trip '. After 2 nights on the wild east coast, we will get you to the 1st Test.

After 8 nights at the 1st Test and 8 nights at the 2nd Test, we  Journey To Jaffna and spectacularly raw Northern Province. With 4 nights on the rugged pensinula and neighbouring islands, we get you back to Negombo for 1 night, and your flight home.

As with all Australian Cricket Tours to Sri Lanka , you are welcome to flop in, go to one or both tests and flit home. It's up to you, but we will get you from and to Colombo's Bandaranaike Airport , as the only airport in Sri Lanka you can fly to.

Sri Lanka in Feb is the high season, and with what seems half the populace of Sri Lanka holding a Russian passport, hotel prices are more than triple* what they were in 2022, and sold out.

We can't help pricing nor availability so will have very limited places. If you want to be offered a spot, join our priority list now.

With our 30 Years Anniversary Tour of the West Indies 2025  shortly after Sri Lanka, 2025 is shaping to be one of the best, with two of the best regions to follow the game ready to welcome you.

England to open the summer with historic Zimbabwe Test

West indies series: white-ball action begins in birmingham, blockbuster india test series: five-match leg begins in june, south africa to conclude home summer with limited-overs series, ecb focused on balancing test and white-ball cricket.

  • Summer 2025 schedule

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has unveiled the international cricket schedule for the summer of 2025, featuring a packed lineup of bilateral series. England’s men’s team will face Zimbabwe, West Indies, India, and South Africa in a series of Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and T20 Internationals (T20Is). The summer will conclude with a tour of Ireland.

The English summer kicks off with a historic one-off Test against Zimbabwe , set to be played at Trent Bridge in Nottingham from May 22-25, 2025. This marks Zimbabwe’s return to Test cricket in England after more than 20 years. The encounter will be a significant moment for both nations, with England expected to provide a tough challenge to the developing Zimbabwean side.

Following the Test match against Zimbabwe, England will shift focus to white-ball cricket as they host the West Indies for three ODIs and three T20Is. The series will begin on May 29 at Edgbaston in Birmingham, with subsequent matches taking place across Cardiff, London, Chester-le-Street, Bristol, and Southampton. This series is expected to showcase explosive cricket, with both teams known for their aggressive style in the shorter formats of the game.

One of the highlights of the summer will be the five-match Test series between England and India , beginning on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. The rivalry between these two cricketing giants has produced some memorable moments in the past, and the upcoming series is expected to be another thrilling chapter. Matches will also be played at iconic venues including Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval.

ECB Chief Executive Officer Richard Gould expressed excitement about the India series. In a media release, he stated, “India touring is always a big draw and a highlight of any cricket summer. The last Men’s Test series here was a nail-biter, and I’m sure next year’s clash will be just as exciting.”

The final leg of England’s home summer will see the team take on South Africa in a limited-overs series, featuring three ODIs and three T20Is. The series will run through September, starting with an ODI at Headingley on September 2 and wrapping up with a T20I at Trent Bridge on September 14. Following the conclusion of this series, England will travel to Ireland for a three-match ODI series from September 17-21.

Gould emphasized the importance of supporting Test cricket while also showcasing England’s strength in white-ball formats. He highlighted Zimbabwe’s return to Test cricket and the significance of ensuring the format’s future: “Test cricket is so beloved in this country, and we know that we have an important role to play in supporting developing Test cricketing nations so that this format of the game thrives long into the future.”

Mohammed Shami Not Certain For Australia Tour Too? Jay Shah Says "Decision Will Be Taken After..."

India fast bowler mohammed shami is making significant strides in his recovery from an ankle injury that has kept him out of cricket since the odi world cup last november.

cricket future tours australia

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah said that the decision on pacer Mohammed Shami 's participation in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy away from home later this year will be taken after the report from National Cricket Academy (NCA). India fast bowler Mohammed Shami is making significant strides in his recovery from an ankle injury that has kept him out of cricket since the ODI World Cup last November. The expectation is that he will be ready to participate in India's home season, starting with a Test series against Bangladesh in September. Shami is currently in the final stages of his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

He resumed bowling last month for the first time since his surgery and has been gradually increasing his bowling workload, reporting no pain.

Shah said to ANI, "Shami playing the Australia series or not is a matter of his fitness and a decision will be taken after the NCA report."

Prior to India's departure for the tour of Sri Lanka in July, chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed Shami has started bowling and indicated that the first Test against Bangladesh starting on September 19 in Chennai would be the goal for his comeback.

Ajit Agarkar stated as quoted by ESPNcricinfo, "We more or less know who the guys are, there are some injuries at the moment and hope they will be back up. Shami has started to bowl which is a good sign. September 19 is the first Test and that was always the goal. I do not know if that is his timeline for recovery, will have to ask the guys at the NCA about that."

Shami has a fine Test record in Australia, picking up 31 wickets in eight matches at an average of 32.16, with the best figures of 6/56. He also has two five-wicket hauls on Australian territory in Tests.

Shah also confirmed that former India middle-order batting great VVS Laxman will continue as the head of NCA.

Laxman became the head of the NCA in December 2021 for a period of three years. His contract is set to expire in September this year.

Aussies eyeing Test return to South Africa in 2023

Aussies eyeing Test return to South Africa in 2023

CA's CEO optimistic a window can be found in 2023 for Australia to tour South Africa after this year's campaign was called off

Australia's men's team are eyeing a window in 2023 to reschedule the three-Test tour to South Africa that was called off earlier this year due to COVID-19 related security concerns.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer Nick Hockley said today that despite the global pandemic creating further cramming of an already packed international cricket schedule, there appeared to be opportunity in 2023 for Australia to play their first Tests in South Africa since the infamous 2018 tour.

After the Proteas returned from sporting isolation in 1992, Australia have historically played Test cricket in South Africa during February-March although they did play a pair of November Tests at Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2011.

Through the 1990s and 2000s, the two teams would regularly meet in Tests in Australia over the holiday season before South Africa hosted a reciprocal series on home soil immediately after.

But that arrangement ended after 2009 when the Proteas announced they wanted to play at home over each Christmas period, before agreeing to return to Australia for the traditional Boxing Day and New Year' Tests from 2022-23.

The current iteration of the International Cricket Council's Future Tours Program only extends to the first quarter of 2023, and shows South Africa playing a three-Test series in Australia over Christmas-New Year 2022-23 after which Australia heads to India.

Hockley did not elaborate on when the "window" for the rescheduled Test tour – the first between the teams since the sandpaper incident of March 2018 – might open but claimed the two nations maintained a strong relationship despite Cricket South Africa expressing "immense disappointment" when this year's tour was called off.

"We've been working over recent months to look to reschedule, and we think we've found a window in the calendar in 2023 to reschedule that tour," Hockley told a media conference in the wake of CA's annual general meeting today.

"Our relationships with South Africa are very strong.

"As we said at the time, we were very disappointed and I know our players were extremely disappointed not to be able to go to South Africa.

"So we're pleased we've been able to find a window in 2023 to reschedule that tour."

While Hockley was optimistic about the prospect of securing a place in the calendar for the South Africa tour, he reiterated Australia's planned one-off Test against Afghanistan seems destined to be postponed.

The historic match was to have been played at Hobart's Blundstone Arena next month, but after the Taliban returned to government in Afghanistan, CA announced it had "no alternative" but to withdraw the offer to host the Afghan team due to the Taliban's stated opposition to women playing cricket.

Under the ICC's conditions for Test match status, member nations must host both men's and women's programs although the global governing body has yet to adopt an official stance on Afghanistan, with the men's team due to participate in the T20 World Cup starting later this month.

Hockley confirmed today the next scheduled ICC meetings will not take place until the closing stages of that T20 tournament in the UAE and Oman, but also indicated an official CA decision on the proposed Afghanistan Test in Hobart would be made soon.

"We're working with the Australian Government and also working with the ACB (Afghanistan Cricket Board) on the finer details," he said today.

"We will be looking to confirm the status of the Test match relatively imminently.

"It certainly won't be cancelled, it's more likely it will be postponed until we've got a bit more clarity but we're working through those details at the moment."

Today's AGM was dominated by yesterday's resignation of long-serving director Earl Eddings, who stood down from his position less than a month after he was unanimously endorsed by the CA Board to serve a second term as chair.

Interim chair Richard Freudenstein oversaw today's meeting and confirmed the board's plan to identify and appoint a permanent chair before year's end, although he claimed he had not thought about whether he would consider filling the role full-time.

"We've got a number of very strong candidates on the board who I think could do the job, and we'll go through a very thorough process," Freudenstein said.

"We'll consult widely, and we'll find a fantastic permanent chair for cricket.

"But I'm not even thinking about that.

"I'm thinking about the next two months, and I've got a number of priorities I want to get done.

"One is to support Nick (Hockley) and the team to deliver what is going to be a fantastic summer.

"Secondly, put in place the process of trying to fill the chair.

"And thirdly, to start rebuilding some of the relationships with stakeholders both here and overseas and continue to push forward the strategy review looking at the cost and revenue opportunities for Australian cricket more broadly."

Freudenstein conceded the timing of Eddings' departure, weeks into the Australian season which has already seen completion of a women's multi-format series against India, was "a little bit unfortunate".

However, he did not believe it would adversely impact CA's capacity to deliver a packed summer schedule.

"The board had planned for an orderly transition that would have started with appointing a successor (to Eddings) at the end of the season, and then with that handover happening over the next period of time to help build those relationships," Freudenstein said.

"But we've got an experienced board, an experienced executive team and we will make sure things get done.

"That's just the way cricket works."
