Terracotta Temple ruins at Garpanchkot

Garpanchkot is a historical site that traces its origins to the Singh Deo Dynasty, which ruled over the region in the 16th century AD. The name, Garpanchkot, derives from the word “Garh”, meaning fort, and the hill where the fort was built, called Panchkot or Panchet. The king of Kashipur, a nearby place, constructed a temple on the hilltop. The hill covers an area of 18 sq km and rises to a height of 2100 feet.

Today, only the ruins of the entire kingdom stand as the scattered terracotta temples on the Southern Panchkot foothills, as the fort was destroyed by the combined forces of the Marathas and the Mughals in a fierce battle. Garpanchkot is a place of unforgettable beauty and historical significance.

GARPANCHKOT – AN INTRODUCTION

The name of ‘GARPANCHKOT’ – the unforgettable land – emerged from ‘garh’, which means the fort of the king of Kashipur, who built a temple on the Panchkot hill. The height of the Panchkot or Panchet hill is approximately 2100 feet and occupies an area of 18 sq. Km. This is a marvelous piece of architecture combined with red bricks, stone, concrete, and wood. The region had a rich culture and spiritual past.

THE WEATHER

garpanchkot tourism

The tropical weather makes summer and winter feel distinctly in this region. Avoid the months April, May, and June as the mercury shall simply soar too high for you to venture out in the open air and can make you sweat even under a shade. After the scorching heat in summer, the monsoon brings some relieve here in Garpanchkot when all the flora and fauna becomes life and the lush green vegetation carpet the Panchet hill with magnificent beauty.

Though monsoon has its own charm in Garpanchkot, the tourist influx is least. Winter is pretty charming in Garpanchkot with the temperature between 8 degrees to 14-degree Celsius, which is obvious for kind of touring whether you trek the Panchet hill or loiter around the Panchet and Mython but make sure to pre-book resorts well in advance before arrival.

THE SCATTERED TEMPLE RUINS AT GARPANCHKOT

Garpanchkot is a part of the nearly 1500-year-old history of the Singh Deo dynasty. The only remains of this kingdom are the temple ruins on the southern Panchet foothills. There are scattered ruins of various Terakotta form of temples around Garpanchkot.

The temples belong to different architectural styles like ‘Pancharatna, Jor-Bangla, and Pirha. Panchratna Temple ruins is the most celebrated ones here. The lush greenery, scattered ruins, perennial springs, woods, towering Panchet Hill and the expansive Panchet Lake makes this a heavenly abode.

MUST-SEE SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS

If this place is on your radar for a long time, never think twice for choosing this quick leisure break to brush away all your tensions in this ambiance. This is a place especially for those who want to lie down on the grass and look at the clear sky at night and gaze the glittering stars and spot few comets like a fairy tale during our childhood days.

Apart from the obvious choice of interesting sightseeing and nearby destinations which include the ruins of fort, snake park, the Birinchinath Temple, Biharinath Temple and the Biharinath Hill overlooking the temple, Baranti Lake nearby, one can also pay a visit to the Baghmundi and Ayodhya hills which are about a 3-4 hours drive from the place.

PANCHET DAM

garpanchkot tourism

Panchet Dam is the endmost of the four dams of Damodar Valley Corporation that have been constructed a little above its confluence with the Barakar. While Dhanbad district is on the northern bank of the Panchet reservoir, the Purulia district is on the southern bank. It was inaugurated in 1959. Build across the Damodar River, it has a tallness of 148 ft and a length of 22,235 ft.

It is an earthen dam with a concrete conduit. The reservoir covers an area of 27.92 sq km at dead storage level and 121.81 sq km at maximum conservation level. The two units of 40 MegaWatt has been installed here for power generation.

Due to comparatively poor transportation links, it is less densely populated than Maithon Dam, which is 30 km away. You can walk along the concrete road adjacent to the Panchet dam and enjoy the moist cool breeze hailing from the Damodar River basin. You may even avail the boat ride facility in Panchet dam charging Rs.100 per person.

garpanchkot tourism

Mython dam is located at Mython, in the Jharkhand state. It is 15,713 ft in length and 165 ft high. The dam was specially designed for flood control and generates 60,000 Kilo Watt of electric power. The reservoir is constructed on the Barakar river and is spread over 65 square Kms.

JAI CHANDI HILL

It is a popular tourist attraction in Purulia with a mean elevation of 509 ft. and is 3 Kms away from the sub-divisional town called Raghunathpur in Purulia district. It is located in Purulia- Barakar road and a popular tourist spot for rock climbing.

Do not forget to taste Darbesh – A sweet made of besan and sugar or jaggery acquirable only in Kashipur. Nature lovers normally visit Kapista Garden, where aforestation is put up by the state government to preserve the endangered and other medicinal trees. Drop there at the water spot just before Kapista, to catch a glimpse of some tortoises roaming in the sand of the Riverbank.

Baranti is a little, reposeful and scenic place. Baranti is in the neighborhood of Ramchandrapur Irrigation Project. You can get a grand view of the reservoir from Baranti which is part of the wonderful ‘Rarh’ countryside and fantastic picnic spot.

HOW TO REACH GARPANCHKOT

The best option is to get down at Kumardubi station before Dhanbad if you are on Howrah – Dhanbad line. You may also call the resort manager to arrange a private car from Kumardubi station. You can alternatively come via Asansol or Barakar. The charge would be around Rs. 500 to Rs.600. It’s approximately one hours journey via Panchet via the National Highway 2.

If you are coming from Asansol, turn left from Asansol and take the road leading to Raghunathpur. After reaching the Satbari stop, your destination is few kilometers away by the village path.

Maithon-Garpanchakot: A Blissful Weekend

Photo of Proma Bhattacharya

If you are a resident of Kolkata, planning a short/weekend trip might prove to be challenging at times. Quick trips mostly are limited to the various Bay of Bengal beaches — Digha, Mandarmani, Shankarpur, Chandpur and many other ‘purs’ that tend to become monotonous after a while. The closest hill station is Darjeeling, which is nearly impossible be covered in two days.

So, we decided to go for neither sea not mountain, but something little out of the way. Maithon is a small town in the West Bengal-Jharkhand border. I did not know much about the town except that it has a dam built on the river Damodar, and a huge hydel power station. Truthfully, I was not very excited about seeing a dam and had already pegged the trip as boring.

The Journey

Anyhow, we started had booked the 6:40 pm Agnibina Express from Howrah to Asansol (Kumardhubi is the closest station to Maithon but transportation from there is uncertain). The journey took around 4 hour and was pretty smooth.

When we reached Asansol, it was already around 10. As it was the month of August, we were greeted with light drizzle, which was very refreshing after a hectic week and train journey. Our hotel had arranged for a bus to pick up us from the station.

Asansol to Maithon took about an hour via NH 60. I had never travelled on a national highway at night as it always seemed scary. But this ride was something memorable. The light rain, the smooth road, the gust of chilly air almost made the entire experience surreal.

As we were closing in on our destination, the further from civilization we seemed to go. The signs said we were in Maithon, but the only things we could see at first were trees and lots of trees. The intermittent street lights also seemed dim. After a while the hotels came into view. Oh my my, who had ever though that Maithon would have so many hotels. It was then I realized I might have underestimated the place’s tourist appeal a bit.

Hotel Shantinivas

Our hotel was pretty decent, spread over quite a big area, and the best thing – just next to the dam, which obviously we did not realize just then. The rooms were pretty big, clean and well furnished. After gorging on a homely meal of rotis/rice, chicken/fish, we called it a night, ready to explore nature the next day.

Photo of Maithon-Garpanchakot: A Blissful Weekend 1/2 by Proma Bhattacharya

Maithon Dam

The light drizzle continued the next day as well. This was actually a blessing in disguise as the alternative of heat and humidity would have been a challenge to the day we had planned. After a hearty breakfast of puri and sabji, we went to visit the dam. With the vast stretches of blue water and the surrounding greenery, the dam is beautiful. We walked up to the banks of the river damodar, which was filled to the brim. The river is notorious for its devastating floods and the hundreds of accidents, especially during the monsoons. We could see several boats docked on the sides, but not a single one in action.

Photo of Maithon Dam, Kenjapahar Ist part al, Jharkhand, India by Proma Bhattacharya

Maithon apparently has a number of other tourist attractions. We hired two auto rickshaws for the whole day for the sightseeing. The price was decided 900 per auto. These autos are not like the ones you see in Kolkata or even other states. These are 9 seaters and the people sitting in the back are likely to experience a whole lot of jerking, given the woeful conditions of most of the roads.

Our first stop was the hydel power station. Well, actually a distant view of the station would be more apt. The auto stopped on the road on top of the dam. From there the sluice gates were clearly visible. In the month of August the gates were opened and the force with which the water passes through is truly a sight. There is also a deer park there, tough we did not visit it. We went down a long flight of stairs to take a closer look at the area, but time constraint made us continue our journey.

Maithon Dam Bridge

The next stop was Garparchakot. Though this is not exactly in Maithon, it was supposedly not far. “Nor far” constituted of 60+ minutes of auto ride with numerous lefts and rights, number fields and ponds and unending stretches of trees. We kind of joked nervously that is the auto driver decided to ditch us somewhere here, we would be hopelessly lost.

Finally we reached Garpanchokot around noon. The rain had stopped and the first thing that struck me was the greenery. It is semi-forested area with hillocks creating a picturesque aura. There are a few ruins like watchtowers, temples belonging to the Sen dynasty which tell the tale of long ago. The place also has a resort belonging to West Bengal tourism. There are also modern day watchtowers but we did not climb them. Overall it is a great place to relax.

Gar Panchkot

Photo of Gar Panchkot, West Bengal, India by Proma Bhattacharya

From Garpanchkot we went to a couple of more places like the snake park and the coal mines. We returned to the hotel past 4 pm and had a very late delicious Bengali lunch. We relaxed away the rest of the day.

Our train next day was at 4:30 pm from Asansol junction. So, with some time to spare, some of us went to Kalyaneshwari Temple. The temple is more than 500 years old and attracts thousands of worshippers every day. At 10 am the temple was already immensely crowded. So, we satisfied our devotions by praying from afar and later gorging on delicious kachuri and dal.

The trip taught me that some out of the way destinations can also satisfy the traveler inside you in the most unexpected ways.

Purulia Tour Guide- Detailed Itinerary

Purulia Tour Guide

Purulia is one of the most visited places in West Bengal and this Purulia detailed tour guide will provide you with all the details you need to travel to Purulia. Purulia is also known as "Lal Matir Desh" which means land of red soil in Bengali. Purulia greets travelers with lush green meadows & forests, hills, lakes, and its natural beauty along with rich history. Not known to many Purulia has played an important role to carve the history of Bengal. Purulia is also rich in tribal culture and will keep you mesmerized with its rustic beauty.

When to Visit Purulia?

We traveled to Purulia after staying at home for more than 10 months in the month of December. Winters are the best time to visit Purulia. The tourist season starts in November and ends in March/April for Purulia.

The best time to visit Purulia is from early March when the Palash flowers blooms and Purulia transforms into a different beauty. Purulia is filled with Palash trees and when they bloom the entire land looks reddish in color due to the color of the flower. The trees look as if on fire with their red-colored flowers in full bloom.

How to reach Purulia?

What is the history of purulia.

There is hardly any written history of Purulia however one can find the mention of crushing the Varendra rebellion by Pala King Rampala in the poem Ramacharitram written by court poet Sandhyakar Nandi.

It is also believed that a major trade route passed through Purulia in the 10h -12th Century. One can find the influence of Jainism in Purulia. There was a huge settlement of Jains during this time Purulia and one can find Jain temples in Purulia. which were built in Oriya Deul Style Architecture. The temples were built of stone and bricks.

One of the important areas in the Purulia district is Garpanchkot. The name is derived from two words Gar ( Fort) & Panchkot ( Panchkot Raj). So basically the combination of two words became Garpanchkot which is the fort of the Panchkot kings. We have heard of the river Damodar, which gets its name from king Damodar Sekhar. He established Panchkot Raj during 90 AD along with the help of Sardards of Jhalda. He kept on expanding his kingdom. The name Panchkot comes from the 5 clans of the areas.

How many days are required to Travel to Purulia?

4 Days 3 Nights are enough to cover all major places of the Purulia district. However, if you have a lesser number of days you can choose and pick the places which you want to visit in Purulia.

Purulia Tour Guide - Detailed Itinerary of Purulia

Purulia has two major circuits for traveling. Circuits are basically routes which one can follow to travel. If you ask any tour agent regarding travel to Purulia they will talk about these circuits.

However, during my travel, I didn't follow any of these circuits and made my own route keeping in mind two important things :

a. Important places that depict the true history and natural beauty of Purulia

b. Places which can be covered in 1 day without getting too tiring and which can be covered in 5-6 hours

I created two routes which I followed for two days to cover Purulia and the majority of its tourist and not so touristy places.

Description

Reviews (0).

Garhpanchkot name evolved from the gar or garh (fort) of the king of Kashipur, who constructed a garh and a temple in this hill. The hight of the Panchkot hill (also called Panchet hill) is around 2000 feet.  The Panchet hill is dotted with tropical trees and looks lash green in rainy season. Below the hill flows the Damodar River. Natural splendor of woods and hills with fresh air makes the place an ideal weekend destination. Walk along the forest of Sal (Shorea robusta), Tamal, Sonajhuri (Acacia auriculiformis), Palas(Butea monosperma) – the aroma of the flowers and leaves will refresh you. Due to tropical weather summer and winter can be felt distinctly in this place. The region had a rich culture and religious past. The kings of Panchakot family, who are still surviving had ruled this region uninterrupted from 940-1750 century under the name Garh Panchkot had to shift their fort to Kashipur due to Mughal attacks.

There are scattered ruins of many teracotta style temples around Garpanchkot. The famous is the Panchratna Temple ruins. Panchkot / Panchet dam is a must see place. Whenever i planned to visit Kolkata, I made sure Garpanchkot was a part of it. Though this wasn’t the first time, but I never enjoyed and explored Garpanchkot better than this time. The guides knew the territory like the back of their hand. Thanks to them, I managed to capture some excellent shots of the wildlife. .

I chose Tourist Hub after one of my friends opted for their service and i’m glad. I chose them for my elderly parents and according to them, each member of the Tourist Hub India was attentive. They took care of their parents and made sure they didn't feel uncomfortable.
