Although large checked smart suitcases exist, this type of luggage typically comes in carry-on or backpack form, as the smart features are most useful on an airplane and while walking through the terminal. We tested the Solgaard Lifepack and were thoroughly impressed by how much fit inside the spacious interior. In addition to the main compartment, there's a front section with various pouches and pockets for stashing small items you want easy access to, plus two side pockets and a laptop sleeve.

What stood out the most was the solar panel, which allows you to charge your smartphone and other mobile devices using energy from the sun. This backpack has an integrated USB port in one of the side pockets that gets its power from the solar panel. We found it comfortable to wear, too, thanks to the padded shoulder straps and chest strap. The Solgaard Lifepack is also eco-friendly, as it's made with recycled plastic sourced from ocean-bound bottles.

Best Checked With Built-in Scale

Beyond the handy weight indicator, this checked suitcase has a huge capacity while still being notably lightweight and easy to maneuver.

The handle only extends to one height, and the lighter colors will show scuff marks.

We tried the Béis Large Check-in Roller ourselves and were blown away by its absolutely huge capacity. This suitcase has lots of pockets and comes with a laundry bag and multiple shoe pouches. Everything on our packing list fit without a fuss — in fact, we could have fit twice as much stuff. It's even expandable, which adds another 3 inches to the depth. And despite the massive size, it's notably lightweight (roughly 10 pounds when empty).

This checked suitcase has a weight indicator that tells you if you've exceeded the weight limit for your airline. Though the handle only extends to one height, it's a breeze to push, pull, and turn on the four smooth-gliding spinner wheels. The polycarbonate shell stood up to our bat-hitting and shoving tests. Bear in mind the lighter colors are prone to show scuff marks, which are all but guaranteed with time spent on a conveyor belt and in a plane's cargo hold, but you should be able to buff them off with a damp cloth.

It doesn't have an expander, and lighter colors may show scuffs.

July's carry-on has a surprisingly spacious capacity, considering its compact design. Although it doesn't have an expander, we had no problem fitting everything on our packing list. There are two internal compartments, one with a zippered mesh closure and the other with an adjustable compression pad. This suitcase also has a convenient USB port that can charge your phone and laptop at the same time. The battery is approved for all major airlines, and it ejects, so you can power it up anywhere or leave it out if you decide to check your bag .

It proved durable during our tests, resisting dents and sustaining only a few minor scuffs you can buff out if needed. Lifting it overhead into an overhead compartment is also easy, thanks to the lightweight design. This carry-on also rolls smoothly on its spinner wheels and takes turns like a champ. Considering the high-quality design, we think the price is justified.

This carry-on has built-in charging ports and a hidden power bank compartment, plus it's sleek, durable, and easy to maneuver.

It doesn't have many pockets, and the expander could make it too large to fit in an overhead bin.

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-on has a decent capacity, though we had to use the expander to fit everything on our packing list . Depending on the airline, this could make it harder to fit into an overhead bin. We appreciate the mesh zippered compartments, which help compress your items and allow you to fit more, but a few smaller pockets would be nice.

This suitcase has built-in USB-A and USB-C ports for recharging your phone, tablet, and laptop. It features a hidden battery pocket, but you'll need to buy a powerbank for it separately. We love the sleek appearance of the Platinum Elite. The polycarbonate shell showed no signs of damage from our durability tests. With a comfortable handle and self-aligning wheels, it maneuvers well on hard floors and turns on a dime, though it takes slightly more effort to push on carpet when packed full.

Tips for Buying Smart Luggage

Prioritize smart features you'll actually use.

Smart luggage often has the allure of being fancy and innovative, but you may not actually need (or use) all the features. A self-driving design with auto-follow technology or a suitcase that doubles as an electric scooter certainly might come in handy, though, realistically, not everyone will be comfortable using these. Plus, the motors and electrical components can make these options substantially heavier. More universally useful features include built-in USB ports with a power bank pocket or ejectable battery included.

Check with your airline before traveling

Always check your airline's luggage rules and restrictions before bringing (or even buying) a smart suitcase, as some smart features may not be allowed onboard. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also has rules about lithium batteries . Devices with built-in batteries — like smartphones, laptops, tablets, and cameras — should generally go in carry-on luggage.

Consumer testers then wheel the luggage through the course and rate the luggage on factors like ease of using the handles, comfort when pulling, sturdiness, wheel performance and maneuverability.

What to look for when shopping for the best smart luggage brands

First and foremost, smart luggage needs to be high quality and durable, because no tech features will be helpful if your suitcase doesn't last. Additionally, look for features that match your preferences.

✔️ Portable charger: Some smart luggage includes a portable charger while others do not and just have a USB port. If you already have a portable charger you like, you can usually save a few bucks by choosing a style without one included. Our picks with portable chargers feature high-quality chargers that are great to use with the suitcase and without.

Do airlines allow smart luggage?

Yes, smart luggage is allowed on airplanes, but there are limitations that depend on the airline. Airlines do not want lithium-powered portable chargers in the cargo hold, so they ask that all portable chargers are removed from the suitcase before boarding and carried in hand. Even if you plan on carrying on your bag, you must remove that battery before boarding in case your suitcase gets checked at the gate. Because of this rule, smart luggage with a built-in charger or battery that is not removable may not be allowed on the plane. Airwheel SE3 is a smart rideable suitcase. It’s got two modes – a pull mode and a ride mode. When it’s in pull mode, it functions just like any other suitcase that you maneuver on your own. But when you switch it to ride mode, you can sit on top of the luggage, press a button on the wheel handle, and just glide around the airport.

It’s a really convenient feature for getting around the airport fast, and a useful one to have if you’re always running around trying to make it to the connecting flight. But such convenience doesn’t come without a few downsides, most notably the weight of the luggage. The Airhweel suitcase weighs around 20 lbs empty, so it already exceeds the carry-on weight limits of some airlines even without any clothes inside.

Also, the suitcase has a pretty small capacity that makes it suitable only for short trips. If you often go away on business for two to three days at a time, you might be able to make this work. But if you want a proper carry-on that can get you through trips of 5-7 days, I’m afraid this isn’t it.

This luggage also features a TSA-friendly lock and a removable battery that doubles as a charger for your devices. One thing I must mention is that the TPU wheels on this luggage are great. They’ll perform really well on cobblestone and uneven terrain, whether you’re pulling the luggage or riding it.

Forward X Ovis Auto-follow Suitcase

Forward X Ovis is the smartest luggage money can buy – in theory, that is. This suitcase has built-in AI that allows it to follow you, so you don’t have to maneuver it. There’s a small camera in the wheel handle as well as loads of sensors on the body of the suitcase, and it’s capable of rolling itself alongside you. It sounds amazing, but things aren’t quite as simple in practice.

For one, the luggage is very fragile. There are so many sensitive technical parts inside it that you need to be careful when handling the case. Also, the follow function works great in open spaces, but not so much in crowded airports. The suitcase gets a little confused when there are huge crowds, and it will bump into other people, so you’ll have to maneuver it manually.

If you disregard the smart feature for a moment, it’s actually a decent suitcase. It’s made from durable polycarbonate with double-spinner wheels, a TSA-friendly lock, and a single-barrel wheel handle.

The interior of the luggage is also great. It’s fully lined with two height-adjustable dividers and a total of three pockets inside. The organizational features are awesome, plus the battery that powers the luggage can easily charge your electronic devices.

It’s also worth noting that you can connect your phone to the suitcase and access the camera if you want to take some really interesting photos.

Samsara Luggage is known for innovative features and this carry-on is no different. The suitcase has a dedicated spot for an Apple Air Tag, so you can easily keep track of its whereabouts. It’s certainly a convenient feature, but is it the only reason why you should buy this luggage? I don’t think so.

Keep in mind that every suitcase is compatible with an Air Tag, even if it doesn’t have a dedicated spot for it. An Air Tag is very small and takes up virtually no space, so you can easily just keep it inside the main compartment of the suitcase if you want to be aware of its whereabouts.

Unfortunately, the Samsara suitcase doesn’t have other smart luggage options. It’s got a flat top design that allows you to use the suitcase as a workstation, but that’s it. It is made from polycarbonate with an aluminum frame, so it’s a very durable piece of luggage that you’ll be able to use for years to come.

Other features of this smart luggage include double spinner wheels, TSA-friendly latch locks, and a height-adjustable wheel handle. The interior is fully lined and equipped with cross-straps and a full-panel divider, but you don’t really get pockets in this luggage. That’s because Samsara sells optional packing cubes, which are a great addition to any of their luggage but also cost an additional $25.

I think it’s great that the manufacturer included a USB type-C port because most of our charging cables are USB type-C and you won’t need an adapter to use the feature.

The suitcase is made from polycarbonate for excellent durability and impact resistance. It’s lightweight and features double spinner wheels, a TSA-friendly combination lock, and a height-adjustable wheel handle.

It’s important to note that this is a bigger carry-on measuring 23” tall with wheels and handles, so it’s a good option only for domestic flights in the US. Most international airlines will not accept a suitcase this big inside the cabin.

The interior of the luggage features an anti-microbial lining and two internal pockets. There’s a full-panel divider in one compartment and tie-down straps in the other, plus you get a laundry bag and two shoe bags with every piece of luggage.

On top of that, this suitcase has an external hardside pocket for laptop storage. It’s a really good piece of luggage and if you’re okay with the higher price tag, you should definitely consider getting it.

I know this technically isn’t a suitcase, but it’s still a great carry-on bag for travel. And it opens up suitcase-style, so that has to count! Honestly, the Vibe is a better option than many proper suitcases because it features a smaller body than most (under 20”), a capacity of 40 liters, and some of the best organizational features.

It’s also an excellent anti-theft backpack, with features like an RFID-blocking technology pocket, slash-proof fabric, puncture-resistant zippers, and a built-in lock. The RFID pocket is the smartest of all features on this carry-on backpack.

What I like the most about this luggage is that it has a very generous capacity but it’s still small enough to be accepted as a carry-on even on international flights. You can easily pack for trips up to a week in this bag, and you’ll be able to keep everything neatly organized thanks to the abundance of pockets. Also, it’s a lot easier to travel with a backpack than a suitcase, and I just had to include one option.

The Vibe will also be very comfortable to wear thanks to the padded and ventilated back panel and shoulder straps. It has a sternum strap and a hip belt to help distribute the load of the pack more evenly so that you’re not in pain even if you’re wearing a fully packed backpack.

This suitcase has built-in Bluetooth and it can connect to your phone. When you’re connected, you can see the weight of your luggage in the Heys app, you can activate a proximity sensor that will send alerts to your phone if you get too far away from your luggage, and you can use the phone to lock and unlock the case.

The luggage uses two AAA batteries that are TSA-friendly and don’t have to be removed before flights.

It’s important to note that the lock is TSA-friendly, so security agents can still open your luggage safely. On top of that, the suitcase is made from durable polycarbonate with double spinner wheels and a height-adjustable wheel handle.

The packing compartments are fully lined with tie-down straps at the bottom and a full-panel zippered divider at the top. You also get to pockets inside the luggage, for maximum packing convenience. Wrangler 20" Smart Spinner Carry-On Luggage

The Wrangler Smart Spinner is one of the most affordable options for smart luggage. The carry-on retails for about $65 and you can get a set of three suitcases for around $200, which is really good value for money. They are ABS plastic suitcases though, so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend the larger sizes of this luggage because of subpar durability.

The carry-on is amazing though, mostly because of its versatile cup holder in the back. It can hold a cup of coffee or a water bottle, plus it doubles as a smartphone stand. There’s also a USB port for charging behind the cup holder, which is the main smart feature of this suitcase.

But if you were to remove the USB port and the cup holder, this would be a very basic carry-on. It’s got spinner wheels, a telescopic wheel handle, and an expandable capacity. There are no locks on this luggage, which is one of the main downsides.

The interior of the luggage is fully lined, but the lining isn’t great quality. There’s also just one small pocket inside, so the luggage doesn’t have the best organizational features. But you get a full-panel zippered divider in one compartment and a pair of elastic cross straps in the other.

It’s also a zipperless suitcase with latch-lock closure. Better security is the main advantage of this design, but the downside is the lack of expandable capacity and generally less packing space. The latch locks are TSA-friendly, but it’s worth noting that they’re not combination locks like on most suitcases. Instead, you’ll get keys for the locks.

The Weight Watcher suitcase also features double spinner wheels and a telescopic wheel handle, as well as grab handles on the top and side. The interior of the luggage is fully lined and features two spacious packing compartments with adjustable dividers.

There are five zippered pockets total on the dividers, which is excellent for keeping the luggage contents organized. I’m not a huge fan of the lining because the print makes it harder to notice if it gets dirty, but I can easily overlook the one fault because of all the other awesome features.

The bag has two in-line skate wheels and a telescopic wheel handle for easy maneuvering, as well as a low-profile grab handle at the top. The Samsonite case also features an external zippered pocket for items you want to keep easily accessible, as well as a trolley sleeve in the back that lets you mount it on top of a larger suitcase.

Plus, some of these options come with other useful features like hidden compartments and GPS trackers so that you’ll know where your luggage is even when the airline doesn’t. There are even some that can follow you around or double as a motorized scooter. And, you thought the future wasn’t here yet… Even if the more esoteric features aren’t as of interest to you, the best smart suitcases are a benefit for travel from keeping your smartphone charged to ensuring that your laptop along with all your other personal items are safe.

So-called smart luggage includes cases and bags designed to keep your gadgets charged while you travel. 

At their most basic, they’ll include a rechargeable battery pack that can be used to power your devices on the go, and at their most advanced they may include a GPS luggage tracker, putting your mind at ease as to the location of your baggage as it travels alongside you. 

Some brands, such as Horizn Studios even include a personalised travel service, managing bookings and reservations on your behalf. 

While not strictly tech-infused, gadget-friendly backpacks and rucksacks can also be a lifesaver when travelling, with secret pockets for valuables and dedicated pouches putting gadgets easily within reach when you’re rushing through security.

Travel restrictions

However, the rise of smart luggage has not been a straightforward one. With airports on high alert due to never ending terrorism threats and passenger safety paramount, some earlier attempts at smart luggage have been banned on flights.

Remember the exploding Samsung Galaxy Note 7 debacle ? Or flaming hoverboards? They’re to blame – with airlines unable to verify the safety of onboard batteries, luggage that contained lithium-ion batteries were banned from the hold – and in the case of some airlines, from being taken onboard as hand luggage too. 

Major airlines like American Airlines, Delta and Alaska Airlines have all put restrictions on smart luggage. But all is not lost, provided you know what you’re travelling with.

So what can, and can’t, you take on board? Essentially, if you buy a suitcase that has a removable battery pack onboard, you should be fine – they’re allowed in the cabin and, so long as you eject the battery before check in, they can be stored in the hold, too. 

However, some airlines are still a little touchy about cases with battery compartments built in, so just to be on the safe side, eject your battery pack before you go through security even if you’re taking it as carry on luggage.

What you definitely shouldn’t do is buy a case with a battery pack built in that can’t be removed. This is a sure-fire way to get you held up at the gate, where you and your belongings will be stranded unless you purchase a new, dumb case.

If you’re after the best of the best smart luggage, the best we've tried so far would be the cases built by Away . It makes smart cases in a range of sizes, including two different carry-on capacities, and a kid friendly case too.

The Carry-On with Pocket is our pick of the bunch. Capacious with a 38L main compartment, and lightweight at 3.8kg when empty, it comes complete with an ejectable 10,000mAh battery tucked under the slide-out handle with two power-out ports for charging a pair of gadgets at once.

Its polycarbonate shell is tough while still having enough give to overstuff the bag in a pinch, and 360-degree Hinomoto wheels let you glide around the airport concourse. 

A dedicated pocket at the front also lets you slip a laptop or tablet in and out in seconds to help a speedy sprint through security. 

An inner compression system maximises the amount of clothes you can fit inside, while a TSA-approved combination lock keeps your valuables safe while also letting authorities safely open your bag if required without resorting to tearing the the thing apart. 

Alternatively, if you're looking for a second option, we also like July's Carry On travel luggage. It's a tiny bit more expensive than Away and a smidge heavier, but it comes with a 10,000mAh battery and offers a good number of dividers and pockets. 

In a recent trip to New York, July's case felt incredibly light and maneuverable despite being loaded with tech and travel essentials, and the carbon fiber shell did a great job holding strong against bumps and scrapes.

For security features, you've got two separate combination locks that can be set independently from one another and a TSA key so that the security agency can get in and out of the bag without causing a fuss.

If you’re after a rucksack we’d suggest trying wares by ModernistLook and Horizn Studios. We've not tried these ourselves, but from our research these look by far the most sensibly-designed, with all the elements we're looking for.

The more tech-savvy of the two is the ModernistLook Smart Pro. Large enough to house a 15-inch laptop, it has an integrated USB port to which you can connect up any portable charging pack on the inside. 

Then, it’s just a matter of plugging your depleted device into the port on the outside of your device to charge while on the go. With a hidden rear pocket for valuables against your back and a luggage strap for hooking your bag onto your suitcase, it’s feature rich.

ModernistLook Smart Pro - smart rucksack with built-in USB charging port and water resistant coating: £105 / $132

The Smart Pro isn’t the best looking bag we’ve seen. If you’re feeling fashion conscious, and don’t mind losing out on the USB port, check out the Horizn Studios Gion, which has a classier pod-like look, ample easy-access storage space and water resistance.

Lightspeed luggage – the cases of the future

The future of luggage? It's looking like it'll be hands-off, and ride-on. With GPS trackers mastered and onboard charging as standard, the future suitcase will look to do the really hard work for us – wandering aimlessly through cookie-cutter departure gates while dragging our stuff behind us.

Take for instance the forward-thinking Modobag , as seen in the video above. Not only is it a vessel for your vestments, it also doubles up as a 6mph motorised scooter, turning a trip to the airport lounge into a makeshift Mario Kart track. Though released in 2016, there's still little out there yet to match it.

Or how about Xiaomi's Puppy 1 Smart Suitcase? Remote control powered with a secure finger print lock, it'll follow its owner around, complete with a parking brake and bi-directional steering, with sensors allowing it to adjust to different inclines and adapt its center of gravity accordingly to avoid tipping over.

And what about if you want to be buddies with your luggage? The Panasonic Personal Porter Robot concept was shown off in late 2018, and features facial recognition tech which lets it lock its contents off to anyone but its owner, whom it'll follow around like a faithful dog. While it's intended more for a trip to the shops than an overseas jaunt, its mere existence makes it easier to imagine a future where we've all got our own personal luggage-bot to carry our belongings around for us. Let the AI worry about your passport and dirty laundry while you hope off the plane and find the nearest beach.

With research and development teams optimising the travel experience at every turn with the launch of impressive smart travel gadgets , a new type of luggage has emerged that does a lot more than just carry your clothes.

From frequent business travelling to mini getaways, we’ve got the details on some of the most exciting smart luggage available right now.

So what does smart luggage actually mean?

Many features that define these newly developed products include power banks that charge your electronic devices, electronic baggage tags, GPS tracking and TSA-approved locks.

The TSA (Transport Security Administration) is a US agency with strict guidelines that stipulate any suitcase can be opened and searched for security purposes, including the forced opening of any non-compliant locks. So if you’re travelling stateside and want to secure your luggage you’ll need an update on your lock. However, due to the tech-minded approach of smart luggage, companies are now making TSA-compatible locks which can be opened using a special TSA master key. Some particularly smart locks include a function that will turn a small light on the lock red, indicating a master key was used.

This being said, regulations have been placed on these new forms of luggage based in part on the lithium battery included in many. Smart suitcases with non-removable batteries are banned and you are unable to check in luggage that contains these lithium batteries.

Would You Buy This Suitcase That Follows You Around?

Sick and tired of dragging your luggage behind you, or hauling around a cumbersome duffel?

ForwardX Robotics recently debuted their Ovis smart carry-on, which uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to recognize its owner, and follow him or her around (at a leisurely speed of up to 6.2 miles per hour).

"Originally, I was inspired by a robotics competition and realized that we could build a personal robot like R2-D2," ForwardX Robotics CEO, Nicolas Chee, told The Points Guy.

"We decided to build the technology for an intelligent rolling robot [that] customers could get access to immediately in the form of a self-driving suitcase," Chee said.

Unlike other smart suitcases that promise to follow their owners (yes, there are multiple) Ovis can analyze its owner's face and specific dimensions — as well as the surrounding environment — so it knows precisely who to follow, even in crowded airports.

Ovis (in Latin, that means sheep) can follow behind you and right alongside you: no wristband or remote control required. A ForwardX spokesperson claimed that while other prototypes have touted similar tracking capabilities, Ovis is the first suitcase of its kind to go to market with truly autonomous side-follow functionality.

During two separate demos in New York City, the TPG team got to play with the straight-out-of-sci-fi suitcase. The results? It's still a bit finicky.

The current prototype sometimes struggles to keep up and has a habit of zipping off in the wrong direction. On more than one occasion, it also bumped clumsily into the person it was supposed to be following.

If the Forward X Robotics team is able to keep Ovis from getting confused, it could be a smart solution for travelers who struggle with carrying heavy bags through the airport, or parents with young kids who want their hands free. And I suspect my father, who loves new technology even when it's more gimmick than marvel (sorry, Dad) would get a kick out of Ovis, too.

Ovis has plenty of other useful features, including a GPS tracker and weight sensor — important, considering it weighs just shy of 10 pounds empty. And despite the recent fall of major smart bag makers , Ovis is doubling down with its FAA-approved lithium-ion battery. Removable, of course.

If having a suitcase that follows you around sounds way more cool than creepy, it's available for pre-order from Indiegogo for $399 . It's not expected to ship out until December 2018, however, so the Forward X team still has time to improve the technology and get Ovis airport-ready.
