The golden age of flying — when travelers dressed in their finest as flight attendants manned carving stations in the aisles — is long gone. Nowadays, it’s more often about enduring cartoonishly cramped conditions without so much as a meal included in some à la carte tickets.

These circumstances make it all the more important to prepare adequately for a long-haul flight and bring your own comforts and conveniences because you can’t always count on airline-issued perks. However, packing and dressing in anticipation of how you’ll feel at hour 10 takes careful planning.

Packing Checklist for a Long-haul Flight

Here's a list of things to pack for a long-haul flight including supplies to strategically carry stuff, picks for grooming and cleaning mid-flight, and other items to help you get shut-eye or generally stay comfortable in the air. Long gone are the days of dressing up to fly. Now, especially under no-frills coach-class conditions, comfort is the name of the game. Dress for relaxation, warmth, and versatility on and off the plane. Layers are key for unpredictable temperature changes mid-flight, too.

Best Lounge Set

Spanx airessentials crew.

While comfort is a top priority when traveling for hours in the air, who says you can't look cute, too? With this Spanx crewneck and matching wide-leg pant set, you can have the best of both worlds thanks to the sleek, airbrushed fabric and effortlessly stylish loose-fit design. There are tons of different muted and bold colors that can be mixed and matched with other tops or bottoms from the AirEssentials Collection .

Best Leggings

Elastique athletics l'original leggings.

These might look like a typical pair of leggings, but the interior fabric has a beaded lining designed to promote circulation and stimulate the lymphatic system (which can often cause swelling after sitting on an airplane for a while.) The brand's MicroPerle beads compress and massage the skin, so these are ideal for post-flight recovery or after a workout, too.

Best Cozy Socks

Comrad knee-high compression socks.

To combat swelling during a flight, a pair of compression socks from Comrad will do the trick. Besides the benefits of compression socks , this pair is far more stylish than a typical set you would find at the drugstore thanks to the colorful striped pattern that comes in small to extra-large size options for an optimal fit.

Best Slip-ons

Naturalizer marianne slip-on loafer.

Travel + Leisure editors have tested a lot of slip-on shoes , and this pair from Naturalizer is easy to dress up or down. They're perfect for going through security worry-free, and they offer plenty of support and cushioning when you're on your feet. When you arrive at your destination, the shoes can be paired with jeans or a dress, offering superior versatility.

Best Slippers

Bearpaw super shorty.

Whether or not you think it's acceptable to take off your shoes on a flight , bringing a pair of slippers is probably the best solution. Once you're up in the air, you can slip off your shoes and slide into this pair of plush booties from Bearpaw. Made with a thick sole, these slippers can also be worn off the plane as a regular pair of shoes if needed.

Best Wearable Wrap

White+warren cashmere travel wrap.

Travel blanket , scarf, or shawl are just a few of the ways to style this gorgeous cashmere wrap from White + Warren. When you're on the plane, the wrap is ideal for keeping you warm and cozy while getting some shut-eye, but it's also nice enough to wear as a shawl on a chilly night out. Opt for a muted color like sand and camel or go bold with fondant pink and bright tangerine color options.

Sleeping on long-haul flights requires preparation. Dress comfortably, in layers, and bring along gear that supports the pursuit: a travel blanket, pillow, ear plugs, and an eye mask. Avoid caffeine and choose a window seat, if it’s feasible, to avoid neighbors tapping to wake you up when they need to use the loo.

Best Travel Pillow

Cabeau tne s3 travel pillow.

Make your coach-class seat more tolerable for a long-haul flight with a neck pillow to support your head for shuteye. This ergonomic memory-foam one even attaches to the back of the seat for added in-flight comfort, and features a compression carrying bag and fully washable cover for afterwards, too. We tested this pillow on a long international trip and found that, despite its size, it was quite easy to roll it up into its compact carrying case for easy transport.

Best Ear Plugs

Loop quiet earplugs.

After testing a slew of earplugs , this pair from Loop were the best option for travelers looking for a stylish and reusable set of plugs. To get the most comfortable fit for each individual, the plugs come with various ear tip sizes ranging from extra small to large.

Best Sleep Mask

Manta sleep mask pro.

A sleep mask is a must to facilitate shuteye on a long-haul flight. And this one is next-level: it provides true blackout light protection and it’s fully customizable to fit your head and face. The carved out c-shaped eye cups also put no pressure on lids or lashes (so you can, say, keep that new set of lash extensions looking flawless throughout your trip). The mask comes with a case and wash bag; it’s also fully machine washable.

Best Travel Blanket

Away the travel blanket.

Gone are the days when you could depend on an airline-issued blanket in coach. Bring your own to cozy up and get some sleep on a long-haul flight. This one from Away is lightweight and made for travel, with an interior kangaroo pocket for keeping essentials safe, as well as a foot pocket for comfort and warmth.

Customize your toiletry and grooming kit for a long-haul flight: Think hand sanitizing spray and/or wipes, pain killer, lip balm, moisturizing cream, and hair ties. If looking fresh-faced directly upon arrival is a concern, a lightweight tinted moisturizer makes a great alternative to foundation. Don’t forget a toothbrush and paste to brush up after a long night in flight. A few bottles carrying key skin care products can help maintain a sense of self-care. While not essential per se, additions like hydrating eye masks and refreshing facial mist can feel downright luxurious after a night in the air.

Best Lip Balm

Eos organic lip balm 4-pack.

Flying can be super dehydrating, so be sure to pack a few sticks of lip balm to keep your lips moisturized throughout a trip. Made with natural ingredients and finished with a mint flavor, this lip balm will leave your lips feeling relieved and refreshed. This pack of four lip balms from Eos is the best way to get a bang for your buck at a little over $3 each, and you can have a backup or two in case one gets lost in transit.

Best Under-eye Mask

Révive instant de-puffing gel eye mask.

Designed to de-puff and brighten the eyes in 15 minutes, this cooling gel mask from RéVive is the perfect way to make your long-haul flight a little more luxurious. Made with ingredients like brown seaweed and an anti-oxidant fruit blend, the mask targets puffiness, wrinkles, and dehydration. After you take off the eye mask, all you have to do is rub in the remaining gel and throw away the mask for a hassle-free spa treatment en route to your destination.

Best Hand Cream

Weleda ultra-rich cream.

The air on planes can be so drying — as can the repeated hand washing and sanitizing that goes along with travel-day vigilance. Use this fan-favorite, ultra-hydrating cream from century-old company Weleda not just on hands, but on elbows, feet, and even faces, too. The 2.5-ounce size is fully TSA compliant.

Best Dental Kit

Kulusion dental travel kit.

It’s hard enough to shake off a long-haul flight and move into the world with any sense of alertness; it’s even harder when you can’t brush your teeth because you didn’t think about bringing a toothbrush in your carry-on. Handle your business with this travel set, which comes with two foldable travel toothbrushes, each with a built-in, refillable toothpaste container.

Best Hand Sanitizer

Touchland power mist hand sanitizer.

Hand sanitizer is essential for keeping your hands clean (and for your peace of mind) on a long-haul flight. This mist version comes in mood-boosting scents, like lemon-lime spritz, frosted mint, and citrus grove. Each bottle contains 500 sprays in a moisturizing aloe vera formula.

Best Facial Mist

Mario badescu facial spray collection.

A facial spray is a great way not just to hydrate the skin but to refresh when you’re feeling bleary. This travel-sized set of four two-ounce sprays comes with one of each calming or invigorating fragrance: aloe, herbs and rose water; cucumber and green tea; chamomile and lavender; and sage and orange blossom.

You’ll need a range of gear from analog (a pen for filling out customs documents) to high-tech (devices, headphones, and chargers). Don’t forget snacks and a water bottle to stay hydrated and nourished, especially if you’re traveling overnight without consistent food and drink service.

Best Portable Charger

Anker slim 10000 portable charger.

Hell is finding yourself on an interminably long flight with a dead battery separating you from your movies, podcasts, or audiobooks, which is why you need to pack a portable charger, especially for international trips . Stay charged up in flight with a portable charger like this slim and lightweight 10,000mAh version.

Best Airplane Footrest

Everlasting comfort airplane footrest.

You know the inner scream you emit when you walk past all those lie-flat business class seats on your way to coach for a long-haul flight? Mitigate the pain by bringing your own footrest. This hammock-style memory foam rest installs over the tray table in front of you and rolls into a travel pouch when not in use.

Best Headphones

Bose noise cancelling headphones.

Noise-canceling headphones can make all the difference both for sleep and entertainment on a long flight. This top-quality, editor-loved pair has a lightweight and compact stainless steel headband. Get up to 20 hours of Bluetooth listening on a single charge — that’s enough to cover any single long-haul flight and then some.

Best Phone Mount

Perilogics universal in-flight plane holder mount.

Use this universal clip to clamp your phone to the tray table to watch hours of your preferred movies or shows on your own device. Dual joints rotate 360 degrees so you can watch horizontally or vertically at just the right angle for comfort.

Best eReader

Kobo libra 2 ereader.

The Kobo Libra 2 is the easiest way to bring a library of books while traveling without having to schlep heavy hardcovers through an airport. This eReader saves you space in luggage and provides access to thousands of audio and ebooks so you can start another book right away. Plus, it's glare-proof and has a dark mode to read at your designed brightness and color background.

Best Reusable Water Bottle

Thermoflask stainless steel water bottle.

Stay hydrated (and environmentally conscious) by traveling with your own refillable water bottle. This one is easy to carry, keeps water cold for hours, and has a truly leak-proof lid.

You’ll want to have what you need nearby during a long-haul flight; that is, your most frequently used essentials should be stowed right at your seat. Consider traveling with an underseat tote or backpack, as well as a smaller pouch — like a waist pack — to compartmentalize your most valuable essentials and keep them close.

Best Carry-on

July carry on.

T+L editors are big fans of July luggage after testing the brand's most popular bags in the lab. The July carry-on proved to be the best cabin-friendly bag for storing essentials you wouldn't want to place in a checked bag in case it gets lost. Lightweight, spacious, and easy to maneuver, what more could we ask for in a carry-on?

Best Underseat Bag

Calpak luka duffel bag.

If you do opt to check a bag or can bring a personal item on the flight, the Calpak Luka Duffel is the perfect carry-all bag for in-flight must-haves. It can easily fit an extra pair of clothes, toiletry bag, pill or jewelry case, tech organizer, or any other item you want to have at your disposal during a long flight. Plus, the puffer material is stylish and protective.

Best Backpack

Everlane renew transit backpack.

Keep everything handy and organized for a long-haul flight with a thoughtfully designed stylish travel backpack . This one has a 15-inch laptop pocket on the outside for easy TSA access, zip pockets for essentials like passports, an interior slip pocket, two water bottle holders, a magnetic closure, and a trolley strap for rolling luggage. It’s also made from 100-percent recycled polyester.

MZ Wallace Deluxe Tote

A tote bag is a versatile piece of luggage to bring on a trip, especially a stylish one like this MZ Medium Deluxe Tote. It's large enough to store carry-on essentials, but it can also be used as a laptop bag for business trips or to carry everyday items you'll need for sightseeing like a collapsible water bottle , snacks, or an extra jacket. We found this bag to be incredibly lightweight during travel, and loved the added convenience of the trolley sleeve which made toting it around the airport a breeze.

Best Fanny Pack

Dagne dover ace fanny pack.

Like the brand’s other travel luggage staples, this Dagne Dover fanny pack is brilliantly designed for maximum function. Neoprene gives it water resistance plus a sleek look, and four pockets keep everything tidy and well-organized. Plus, it’s made from recycled polyester derived from 100-percent post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.

Tips for Packing for a Long-haul Flight

Keep what you need close at hand.

When you’re flying for hours upon hours, you’ll want an array of comforts and conveniences. But they’ll be no use to you if they’re in your checked luggage — or even if they’re in the overhead bin when the seatbelt sign is on. Make sure you have what you need close at hand, under your seat and in the seatback pocket.

To help sort your most essential items from the rest, consider packing a smaller travel pouch to compartmentalize these and keep them close. A tiny keychain flashlight — or even the flashlight on your smartphone — can help you search for small but vital things when the cabin lights are off.

Prioritize versatility and comfort

When you’re getting dressed for a long-haul flight — fresh, rested, alert — it can be hard to imagine how you’ll feel 12 hours into the journey. But try to channel that feeling when you’re choosing clothes: they should be comfortable enough to spend many hours wearing, and ideally to sleep in, too. You should also choose a wardrobe and gear that is versatile enough to wear awake and asleep, on the plane and in the airport, and even as a multitasking item upon arrival. For instance, a drapey layering piece can also serve as a blanket and/or pillow when needed.

Plan for sleep and awake time

Pack items you’ll want for restful sleep such as an eye mask and ear plugs, and bring what you need to make your seat as cozy as possible (like a blanket and pillow). But equally consider the time you’ll spend awake: Have enough entertainment (like movies, books, or games) to keep you busy and allow you to enjoy — as well as just pass — the wakeful time.

For a long-haul flight, dressing for comfort should be top priority. A coordinating loungewear set is an easy, versatile pick as it's something you’re equally comfortable wearing while awake and asleep, in the airport and on the plane. Opting for a good pair of travel pants is another great way to ensure comfort without looking like you just flew for 12 hours. And dress in layers: Airplane cabins can be unpredictably cold or warm, and any layers you’re not wearing can double as blankets or pillows, too.

Getting sleep on a long-haul flight will be key to feeling alert on arrival — and it sure helps pass the time, too. Set yourself up for sleep success by dressing in non-constricting clothing. Pack comforts like a travel pillow and blanket, as well as an eye mask to block out light and distractions, and ear plugs (or noise-canceling headphones) to banish cabin sounds. And avoid caffeinated beverages as well as alcohol as these can disrupt sleep (tempting though they may be).

Cabeau neck pillow

The Cabeau travel pillow has been traveling with us since 2017. Becca wears it during all of the flights and long bus rides that we take together. She’s much better at being able to sleep on flights than I am.

airplane travel kit

We like this pillow because you can wash the zippered fabric cover, and the design is much more sturdy than any of the other pillows that we’ve used before. It’s also one of Becca’s recommended travel products for women .

airplane travel kit

The Cabeau neck pillow is designed to provide optimal neck support and comfort during long travel hours.

Travel day fanny pack

I don’t know how Becca (or I) would travel without her fanny pack. Because Becca has quite a few that she likes and uses them during our travel days, I’ll usually keep important things like my passport and maybe some money with her.

Check out the best-selling lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag 1L , which is a great choice for a travel day waist pack.

I go more in depth in this lululemon belt bag review .

airplane travel kit

Becca keeps everything in her fanny pack, like tissues, pens (for filling customs forms), plastic silverware (this has come in SO handy), her phone, her (and my) passport and a tiny bottle of hand cream for curing the dry hands you get when you fly. She has tried quite a few fanny packs throughout the years, and listed the best fanny packs for travel, here .

Fanny packs, or waist packs/hip packs/belt bags (whatever you want to call them) help give you quick access to your most important and valuable items so you don’t have to have them too far from you, like under the seat in front of you or overhead.

This is crucial because you can have the fanny pack on your person during an entire long-haul flight (just loosen the strap around your waist), and have all your top valuables in plain sight.

lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag

The lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag combines vibrant style and practicality, making it the perfect companion for travel days.

Peak Design Tech Pouch

Because I travel with a lot of cords, cables and dongles, something like the Peak Design field pouch or the Peak Design tech pouch is a great way to stay organized and have quick access to everything that you need. I recommend both in my list of my favorite tech pouches for travelers .

airplane travel kit

Instead of throwing my phone cable, headphone wires, audio splitter, power bank, pens, my passport (when Becca doesn’t have it in her travel fanny pack ) and everything else into the bottom of my bag, I’ll organize it all with a tech pouch. You can check out more at my Peak Design Tech Pouch review .

The Peak Design Tech Pouch is a highly-organized, efficient, and compact storage pouch designed for carrying your tech accessories. It's an excellent accessory for travelers, photographers, or anyone who carries a lot of small tech gear and wants to keep everything organized.

Travel Blanket

Some flights now make you pay for blankets, and having one of your own is a great way to save money while traveling . A blanket is a nice way to help keep you more comfortable as you try to sleep on a long-haul flight.

Also, I’m pretty sure that airlines don’t wash those blankets (ew) and that they reseal them (can someone let me know if this is true?). Traveling with our own blanket ensures that it’s our blanket, and we know where it came from.

Traveling with my own travel blanket can also be useful for the travels at my final destination; it can be a better option than using comforters at hotels, or better than guest blankets (these are definitely never washed) anywhere else.

If you’re looking for other options, I would look into this travel blanket and this one from Cabeau .

airplane travel kit

Ultrasoft Compression Travel Socks

I learned that compression socks, when worn on flights, increase comfort when flying. On a flight, you don’t move around much and your circulation naturally slows down. So, it’s helpful that compression socks help transport blood from extremities to your heart and help you avoid blood clots when you’re sitting in a cramped space.

airplane travel kit

A solid pair of travel compression socks can be preventative for post-flight swelling as well. Becca tried a pair during our flight from New York to Vancouver . She thought they were so comfy.

Becca also took them as one of her essentials for flying while pregnant . See more ideas at our list of the best socks for travel .

Merino Wool Travel Hoodie

I started bringing a travel hoodie with me, and it’s been a good way to stay comfortable in cold airports and on cold flights.

During all times of the year, airports are typically cold. Flights can be really cold, too. Having a lightweight hoodie that packs away in your carry-on is a perfect addition to your flight kit, and the Aviator travel hoodie that I have has cool features like an oversized hood that helps become a sleep mask.

Becca and I have both worn the Aviator travel hoodies, and they became our favorite travel sweatshirts. See more at our Aviator hoodie review .

Priority Pass membership

We’ve mentioned this must-have in other parts of our site like all about our lounge experience in our airport lounge how-to guide . Our Priority Pass memberships have pretty much changed our travel experiences from “not so great” to “pretty awesome.”

If you have a long flight, and then if you have anywhere from a two-hour to a twenty-hour layover (also, don’t confuse these two, because that’s how I wound up with an unexpected night in Japan…) you will want airport lounge access.

For us, gone are the days when we sit around looking for outlets with which to charge our phones next to uncomfortable chairs near the gate of a departing flight. Also gone are the days when we buy a $5 water bottle and a $15 egg sandwich because we’re desperate for some food.

airplane travel kit

Priority Pass is a membership that gets us into airport lounges all over the world. We’ve enjoyed Priority Pass lounges during layovers in Lisbon en route to the Canary Islands , and in Hong Kong before the longest flight we’ve ever taken, which is HKG to NYC (16.5 hours — that is a LONG flight!).

Eating well, charging up and relaxing at an airport lounge puts us in a good mood before stepping on a flight. It also helps us reset in between long flights.

Again, Priority Pass is not quite a physical accessory, but it’s something you may like to have in your stock of “long flight essentials” in order to have the best trip.

For times when you want to sleep on flights, but the lights are still on, a good sleep mask is crucial. Becca claims that a sleep mask is the #1 way for how to get better sleep during travel .

I like this sleep mask because it has memory foam and doesn’t put any pressure on your eyes. It creates a solid seal to let in as little light as possible.

Travel in comfort and bring on the darkness with this sleep mask, designed to ensure restful sleep anywhere, anytime.

These Sony noise-canceling headphones are currently my top pick for headphones. On flights, they are the best because they block out a lot of noise from the airplane and other passengers.

When you have them on with the noise cancellation mode, it’s truly amazing how much of the plane’s white noise the headphones will block out. And, what’s the opposite of white noise? Is it black noise? These headphones help me block out the sounds of people snoring next to me, people having loud conversations, people who insist on talking on the phone before the flight takes off and more.

airplane travel kit

They come with a convenient carrying case, so you can make sure they stay in great shape while you transport them and take them in and out of your carry-on luggage.

Noise-canceling Headphones

Enjoy serene, uninterrupted audio with these noise-canceling headphones, a must-have for travelers and audiophiles alike.

AirFly Wireless Headphone Adapter

One thing that we wish we had much sooner was the Twelve South AirFly . It’s a device that you can plug into the headphone hack on the airplane media console and pair your own bluetooth headphones to it. This is amazing, for anyone whose flight experience could be elevated with this!

airplane travel kit

This is great for times when you have your AirPods, but don’t have a way to connect them to the airplane media console. We have it and we’re always excited to take it on flights with us!

AirFly by Twelve South

Enjoy wireless freedom with the AirFly by Twelve South, turning any wired audio jack into a Bluetooth connection.

Headphone Jack Splitter

If you’re traveling with a significant other , family member or friend, a headphone splitter is one of the best and smallest things that you can carry with you to enhance your flight. We recommend this in our guide for how to fly with multiple kids because it’s crucial for watching movies and videos together as an activity!

You can plug a headphone splitter into the arm rest to watch a movie with someone. You can also split the audio out of an iPad or a phone to watch something downloaded on any of your favorite streaming services. iPhone users will need this dongle and most other phones can use this dongle .

Headphone jack splitter

Share your tunes easily with this headphone jack splitter, a simple solution to simultaneous audio sharing.

Ear Plugs & Ear Plug Alternatives

I can’t seem to fall asleep on flights (nor anywhere) without blocking out annoying noises, conversations and any sounds that aren’t ambient. When the flight staff turns down the lights to try to simulate nighttime, it’s a perfect time to put in my ear plugs to block out noise from other passengers.

I’m currently using the Flare Calmer ear plugs , which reduce annoying sounds, but also don’t block everything completely so that you’re only blocking out what bothers you.

The “Calmer” ear plugs are great for busy places (while traveling), audio annoyances during flights or transport and any sounds that may trigger you in a stressful way. For smaller ears, there’s the Flare Calmer Pro Mini ! For sleeping, I use the SLEEEP line of ear plugs from Flare Audio.

See my full Flare Audio ear plugs review to see what they’ve done for me in my travels.

airplane travel kit

You can check them out on Amazon or directly on the Flare Audio website .

Block out the world and focus on rest with these ear plugs, your compact solution for peaceful sleep during travel.

Battery Backup pack or Power Bank

Some of the newer airplanes have power chargers under the seats. Aside from them being super hard to locate, your plug can often fall out, especially when you’re least expecting it.

It’s more on the rare side that the flights I’ve taken recently have these power outlets.

airplane travel kit

I like traveling with a power bank on long flights because I can charge my phone, iPad or headphones before they run out of batteries. For flights over the five-hour mark, this is important so that I can arrive at my destination with a fully-charged phone.

Battery back up

Stay prepared with a battery back-up, ensuring your devices remain powered during your travels.

Reusable Water Bottle

Water bottles are a must for me while being in an airport and on an airplane for an extended amount of time.

Airport water is expensive, and can sometimes be $4 or $5! It seems crazy to spend that when almost every airport I’ve been to has a water refilling station. But the catch is, you need your own bottle. When I’ve been traveling for super cheap , I’ve gotten the cheapest bottle of water so that I can reuse the plastic bottle!

To be a sustainable traveler , ask the flight attendants on your flight to fill your bottle instead of drinking several of those tiny water cups. You also want to make sure you’re drinking a lot of water, because it’s easy to get dehydrated on flights. We like to stay healthy while traveling !

I realized that the day after traveling a long distance, I never felt great, and I think that is because I never drank enough water on longer flights.

Black water bottle

These days, I like to sit on the aisle so that I can get up, stretch my legs and have an easy exit to the bathroom if I need one.

Stay hydrated with a reusable water bottle, an eco-friendly solution for your hydration needs.

It’s typical for some types of airplanes to not have any entertainment on the backs of the seats. Or, if you get really unlucky, your entertainment center might not work.

On a recent flight that I took, the touch capability on the in-flight entertainment screen stopped working, and I couldn’t change the brightness of the screen. When my movie finished, I wasn’t able to watch anything new!

Luckily, I had my phone, and I was able to watch something on it because I had downloaded some videos. I wish I traveled with my iPad because it would have been much more enjoyable to watch something on a larger screen.

Also, if you are traveling with toddlers or kids, an iPad is a great way to keep them entertained. For times when flights do have entertainment on the seats, having an iPad with kids is still a good idea so that children aren’t bumping and tapping too hard on the seat neighbor.

airplane travel kit

I’ve found that this iPad stand is the best lightweight stand to travel with and prop a tablet or phone on the airplane tray table.

Experience technology at your fingertips with the Apple iPad, the perfect blend of productivity, entertainment, and portability.

For the readers in the group, a Kindle is a great way to travel with all of your books, but without carrying any of the weight.

On my most recent flight, I opted not to bring a book because I had no room in my carry-on. I did have room for a Kindle, though.

airplane travel kit

If you travel with a Kindle, be sure not to bring it to the beach during your trip and sit on it. I had a friend who did that, and she was pretty upset. Kindles do happen to be more ‘breakable’ than paperback books.

Amazon Kindle

Enjoy a vast library of books in a compact form with the Amazon Kindle, making reading on the go a breeze.

Audiobooks (via Audible)

Audiobooks with Audible are great. I am not a big text reader, but I really do enjoy listening to audiobooks as much as I can. Long flights are the perfect opportunity to catch up on all of your books and make a big dent into your queue.

As a free alternative, look into how you can rent books from your local library!

Apple AirTags

We have Apple’s AirTags (the 4 pack) for putting on our checked baggage. For those who don’t know, Apple AirTags are like tracking devices for your things. While traveling, they’re nice to attach to your overhead or checked bag, as well as backpacks (which will also save your day if something gets stolen).

They work by using other iPhones to help locate your bag, so they work the best in crowded areas where other iPhones are around.

airplane travel kit

In the rare event that there is a mix-up with your bag and someone else takes it by accident, you can see and track where your bag is, using your AirTags. A lot of friends have recommended putting AirTags on checked luggage, backpacks and the like.

For crowded flights, where your bag might be stored in a different part of the airplane, this can give you peace of mind that you can track down who took your bag in the event of that rare occurrence.

Regardless of whether you checked bags or not, having Apple AirTags can help put your mind at ease about being able to track your belongings and luggage. Take it from me: I once had my favorite book stolen from under my nose during a flight that wasn’t even so long.

What I’m saying is even if you doze off for 15 minutes and if there are dishonest passengers lurking in your plane, anything from your water bottle to your wallet could get quietly snatched.

Track your most valuable possessions with Apple AirTags, Apple's newest product for protecting against theft during travel.

Comfy socks

It took me a while to figure out that something as simple as comfy socks could make a huge difference in your flight experience.

Because you can be sitting for a long period of time, a good pair of socks can help your feet breathe, keep them warm and keep them cozy during those “nighttime” flight hours when people are supposed to be sleeping.

airplane travel kit

I’ve gotten to know the Swiftwick brand and recommend them for this reason! Check out the collection here .

Keep your feet warm and cozy with this selection of comfy socks, designed to cushion your feet at every step.

Travel locks

When traveling to different parts of the world, keeping an extra eye on your things is always a good idea. Becca once had a Lonely Planet China book stolen during a flight because she got up to go to the bathroom, and that’s pretty crazy. Travel locks are a default and are especially one of the best products for backpacking trips .

If I am traveling with my camera and my laptop, I like to put a small lock on my bag to give me extra security that no one can easily open and snoop around my bags, getting into all my mildly-expensive camera accessories .

If you’re sleeping, or if you’re not near your bags on a flight, it’s really easy for someone to open the overhead and grab something from your bag. Locks make it hard for someone to get in there without you knowing.

Ensure your belongings are secure with these travel locks, providing peace of mind on your adventures.

Comfy pants

After so many flights, I really wish I was wearing something more comfortable than jeans or shorts. Sitting for a long period of time isn’t always the most comfortable. Finding a good pair of pants to wear during a flight can make a huge difference in your comfort levels.

We have an article that talks in much more detail about the best travel pants .

We recommend joggers, as they have pockets, and look decent, but they feel soft, comfy and stretchy like savvy sweatpants.

airplane travel kit

Passport holders ( wallet or pouch )

A passport case doesn’t really help you travel, but it does help protect your passport from spills or accidents that happen inside of your bag or around you while you have your passport out.

airplane travel kit

Having a passport wallet is also a great way to stay organized and keep any additional travel documents, like connection flight tickets , visa information and other IDs all in one place. We keep entry papers, vaccine cards, boarding passes and other documents all inside a shared passport case.

airplane travel kit

Fun story: Becca was once in Laos during the spring new year festival when everyone throws water on each other, and her passport almost got soaked. A passport case or protective sleeve would’ve helped out with the stress of the constant water everywhere.

Our Harber London passport wallet is a travel security product that has spots for bills and cards, and also has RFID protection. It has a magnetic closure, which adds a luxurious touch. This passport wallet is the crème de la crème when it comes to how to safeguard your passport in a stylish way.

airplane travel kit

We also started using the Tortuga Passport Pouch , which is made of durable waterproof material and has an L-shaped zipper you can see here. If you want to really keep your passport dry and secure, opt for this one. You can see a few more photos in my Tortuga brand review .

Travel Pillow

I actually have trouble with travel neck pillows . I’ve tried Becca’s Cabeau and never sleep comfortably with it. I usually want a real pillow and try to scrunch up whatever neck pillow I have to make it into a real pillow. Or, I’ll end up using a jacket or sweatshirt.

A pillow is generally a good idea to travel with. It comes in handy if you have any type of bus travel the roads are smooth enough to take a nap. Also, having a spare pillow is great if your accommodation has really flat pillows.

I would take a look at some of the camping pillows that Sea to Summit makes. They have a selection of inflatable and packable pillows that will pair nicely with travel as well.

Enhance your sleep during travel with a travel pillow, your ultimate travel companion.

Mini Massage gun from TheraGun

I’m always really sore after long flights and I’ll typically stretch, to try and stay loose. It’s been really nice to have access to a travel-sized massage gun to help with stubborn knots that are hard to get to with stretching.

I run a lot when I travel and this mini version of the original massage gun has been a great addition to help reduce injury. You can see above how the size compares to a passport. It can even fit in my personal item on the flight. I think it’s one of the best travel-sized fitness products for being able to work out during a trip .

Collapsible/nestable Tupperware or travel food storage

I started bringing my own food to the airport, and it’s been a game-changer. One time, I brought a sandwich to the airport to bypass needing to spend a lot of money on airport food. I put the sandwich inside of my bag, and lucky me, the sandwich got a little soggy and got my hoodie a little wet. Yikes.

I wish I had a sandwich box or some other more secure bags to keep my sandwich in, and something collapsible and foldable would’ve been amazing.

Becca brought one of our Tupperware containers from home with some nuts and dried fruit. She had a great experience with that, except once the snack was over, the empty Tupperware took up a bit of room in her bag.

Collapsible Tupperware and dining storage is a great solution for being able to bring your own food without needing to carry a lot of bulky food containers with you.

airplane travel kit

Nesting stainless steel snack containers might also work well if you want something more sturdy. We like the EcoLunchbox nesting snack containers because they have no-leak lids and are impossible to break.

Collapsible Food Storage Containers

Maximize space and maintain freshness with these collapsible food storage containers, ideal for meals on the go.

Why should you trust us?

We’ve been traveling the world, both separately and apart, and that has involved some VERY long flights!

Both Becca and I have been on flights from NYC to Hong Kong (that is a really long flight) as well as flights to Africa, India, the Middle East and Argentina, between the two of us. Having trusty gear to get you through those types of flights is crucial.

Becca prioritizes accessories that help her sleep, whereas I prioritize accessories that help me listen to and watch entertainment. Different aspects of flying are important to each of us, which is why this list reflects our preferences. Maybe you enjoy a little bit of both these ends of the spectrum!

For us both, we like flying to feel like an experience, even though the flight is simply the journey that gets you from “here” to “there.” Whether you plan to pack in as many movies as you can, or as many hours of sleep as humanly possible, we hope this list of travel accessories for long flights does the trick!

Long Haul Flight Essentials: 20 Best Travel Accessories for Long Flights

Living in New Zealand means whenever I travel it takes a long time to get there so I know how to survive a long flight . I’ve done eight 12 hour flights just in the last seven months, so take it from me, these 20 items are long flight essentials.

Neck pillow

After sleeping so well in economy on a recent flight from Auckland to LAX, I’m convinced that a travel neck pillow is among the best travel accessories for international travel. Getting a decent block of sleep on a long haul flight is invaluable and having a neck pillow that keeps you comfortable and stops your head from slipping is absolutely key to this.

One of the best travel neck pillow for long flights is the Cabeau Memory Foam Evolution pillow because it’s soft, supportive and comfortable. It also folds up easily. You can check prices on it here .

Compression socks

If you are flying long haul you really need to wear compression socks. They do wonders to stop your legs feeling tired, achey and swollen from spending a long time sitting down.  Here’s a link to the Wanderlust Air Travel Compression Socks above.   Read my full guide to choosing compression socks and why you should use them here.

Regular socks

In addition to compression socks, one of my top long flight accessories is just a regular pair of socks. My feet are often cold on planes, even with compression socks on (which are more a stocking material).

Also, if you’ve been traveling a lot and have stinky feet, it’s kinder to your fellow passengers to put a fresh pair of socks on once you board the plane and kick of your shoes to get comfy. Seriously, I get stinky feet and I’m so conscious of the smell. I also wrap my sneakers in the plastic bag that they give out the blankets in so that people can’t smell them!

Hand sanitiser.

Airplanes and airports can be disgusting and the longer you have to spend in them, the more gross stuff you have to touch. Hand santiser is one of my must haves for long flights.

A small tube of hand cream is one of my long flight travel essentials. I always find the plane very drying to my skin. Using hand sanitser also really drys out my hands so I like to use it throughout the flight and travel days.  This is my favorite hand cream by l’Occitane . It’s such a small tube so it’s great for travel but a little goes a long way!

If someone asks me what to bring on long flight, one of my first answers is always lip balm. The air filtration and conditioning systems on a plane can make your lips feel very dry. Lip balm is one of my top airplane essentials for long flights.

airplane travel kit

Facial mist

Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist is life! This is one of the best beauty products for long haul flights. It refreshes your face and keeps you feeling hydrated and clean.  Here is a link to Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist on Amazon but note this is a 100ml bottle which is fine for travel internationally (go metric system!) but if you’re in the US TSA says 3 oz so this is slightly too big. You can decant it into a small travel-sized spray bottle like this if you don’t want to risk it.

Baby wipes are totally a travel essentials for long haul flights for me… and not just because I travel with kids. Baby wipes are essential for staying fresh and clean on a long flight.

Wipe of your make up once you’re settled in for the long haul and your skin will thank you for it for the next few days. It’s also worth wiping down your tray table, control pad and arm rest as they are often dirty.

I always freshen up in the bathroom when I wake up on a night flight so I feel fresh before we land. Doing a quick “wash” with a couple of baby wipes helps me feel semi-decent especially if I have to go sit in the airport and wait for a connecting flight.

Hazel waiting to board another long flight, Auckland to Tokyo on Air New Zealand

It’s easy to forget about this but one of my most important things to take on a long flight is deodorant. Once you’ve wiped yourself down in the bathroom, put on a fresh layer of deodorant.  A baby wipe off and slick of deodorant can make you feel good as new!

Folding toothbrush and travel sized toothpaste

And while you’re at it, brush your teeth! It’s amazing how good cleaning your teeth can make you feel! I always carry a folding toothbrush and a small tube of toothpaste in my bag of long haul travel essentials.

Small packing cube

For more info on using packing cubes to help you pack like a pro, read this post.

Change of clothes

If I’ve checked a bag, I usually carry a change of clothing in my carry on. Having a fresh pair of underwear or a clean t-shirt is the best travel gear for long flights. You never know when turbulence is going to knock a sticky drink on your lap or when your child is going to pee their pants. If you’re one hour into a 12 hour flight, trust me, you will want to change your clothes!

If I’m traveling with only carry on luggage, I always put a fresh pair of underwear in my small packing cube with my toiletries that I mention above. This way I don’t have to dig through my carry on suitcase and can just quickly whip out my small packing cube, go to the bathroom and change my underwear when I clean up and get ready to disembark at the end of the flight.

Onboard our long flight from LAX to Fiji, Hazel bought her own snacks of course!

Onboard our long flight from LAX to Fiji, Hazel bought her own snacks of course! We flew Las Vegas to LAX to Fiji to Christchurch all in one go so it was a long travel day. Everyone got a wipe down with baby wipes and a change of clothes before the overnight flight though.

Honestly, don’t trust that the food on board your flight will be remotely edible. On our recent flight from Shanghai to Auckland we figured that the food would be good considering it was Air New Zealand but what we were served for both dinner and breakfast was basically inedible.

If you or your kids are fussy eaters or have specific dietary requirements like vegan or gluten free, you should definitely pack your own snacks for a long flight. Even if you’ve ordered a special meal, there is a chance that it won’t be loaded on the plane. Always bring your own snacks!

Herbal tea bags

One of my personal in flight essentials for long haul flight is a few herbal tea bags. I like to drink a cup of peppermint tea after meals to help digestion. Steering clear of tea and coffee with caffeine in them will also help you stay hydrated on the flight.

If you’re a real coffee snob then I would suggesting bringing your own coffee sachets on the plane, like a Starbuck VIA, because in general the airplane coffee is awful. If you are fussy about the coffee you drink then this will be one of your best long haul flight accessories.

Melatonin is the best sleep aid for long flights. If you’re not familiar with it, Melatonin is a hormone that the brain releases to signal sleep. You can buy Melatonin tablets, drops or even gummies and chocolates to help you get to sleep on a flight and also combat the effects of jetlag when you arrive at your destination.  You can read more about melatonin here.

Please note I’m not a medical professional and this is simply my opinion on the best sleep aid for flying. You should consult your doctor before taking Melatonin.

38 Best Long Haul Flight Essentials + Insider Tips

As someone who moved to the other side of the world, Long Haul Flights very quickly became part of my regular routine.

I am not one to fly for business, so I do not have the perks of free upgrades and you will find me in the back of a plane in economy!

Unfortunately, there is no “secret hack” to turning your economy flight into a first class flight.

However, you can pack some “long haul flight essentials” to make your flight much more bearable.

From my very first flight to London, where my not-so-polite seat neighbour told me to stop crying (dude, I don’t know when I’m going to see my family again!), I have become a pro at packing and preparing for my long haul flights and coming up with the best list of essentials for long flights.

Lucky for you…. I am share some of my long flight essentials (always pack a blanket scarf) and general tips with you to hopefully make your next flight a little less…..sucky?

Hey There……there is a very good chance that this post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through them, we may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Table of Contents

Pack your Long Haul Flight Essentials Kit

These are the items that are going to transform your economy flight into a first-class flight….. who am I kidding?

These items will not make it a first-class flight, but they will make your economy flight a little more comfortable.

1. Baby wipes

I used to travel with cleanser but I have found that baby wipes are little easier to travel with and because they have a few uses they are one of the best items for long haul flights.

I love to wipe my face and neck as soon as I get on the plane. It helps to replicate my night time routine and get me ready to relax.

I also like to wipe down my surroundings, I know that plans are cleaned but like to make sure!

Baby wipes are great for that mid flight shower – remember, we’re in economy not first class!! I also like to have a bit of a “wash” before arriving in my destination.

Baby wipes are the number one long air travel must haves if you like feeling clean on a long haul flight.

2. Deodorant

This plane travel essential is more for your seat neighbours! I always panic that I am going to be stinky on my flight, so I am constantly using deodorant throughout my flights. I love the fresh coconut scent of this deodorant !

3. Lip Balm

Lip Balm is a definite essential because airplanes are super dehydrating. There is nothing worse than being dehydrated when you are trying to sleep!!

A green building in front of snow capped mountains

4. Moisturiser

Moisturiser is another LONG haul flight essential. I moisturise several times through out the flight so I don’t look 100 years old when I arrive in my destination.

I either use a regular moisturiser or if I can’t be bothered constantly applying moisturiser , I take a thick mask with me (just remember to put it into a travel container!)

5. Travel Bottles

Remember when travelling on long haul international flights your liquids and gels need to be under 100mL. This is where travel bottles will come in handy.

You can pour (or scoop) your larger bottles and containers into your small travel bottles . This will ensure you’re not getting into trouble at security and that you aren’t wasting product.

An airplane tray table folded down with a 7-up can next to a cup with 7-up, a straw and a lemon in it behind a packet of pretzels

On most long haul flights, you will get some food. It just might not be as often as you like it or the kind of food that you feel like in the middle of the night so I suggest you pack your own food!

7. Travel Cup

I always get bored at airports and buy drinks just for the sake of it. When ever possible I would much rather use a reusable cup to help do my bit for the environment. Reusable cups are great as a general travel essential so I highly recommend you get one!

8. Reusable water bottle

Reusable water bottle in case you didn’t read earlier, airplanes are very hydrating places and water bottles in the airport are VERY expensive (and bad for the environment). I always take a water bottle with me and ask the flight attendants (very politely) if I they will fill it up for me. I love collapsible water bottles because when they are empty they don’t take much space.

I always bring gum with me, it helps if you can’t find a toothbrush and it can help your ears when your flight is taking off or landing.

10. Hair Ties

When moving around airports my hair always gets in the way, so I like to have a few hair ties handy. I prefer to use the silk scrunchies because they’re much kinder to my hair.

11. Toothbrush

I think this one is self explanatory but something can be easily forgotten. I always buy a new tooth brush and pack in my hand luggage so I can’t forget to pack it on the day I leave.

12. Head phone splitter

If you’re travelling with a partner or a friend and using a laptop or iPad for entertainment you will want to grab a head phone splitter !

airplane travel kit

13. Noise cancelling Head phones

Noise cancelling headphones are perfect to block out the noisy sounds of the plane, babies crying or the snoring passenger next to you.

I love these headphones as they allow me to sink into a movie and the time flies by (pardon the pun!) and are definitely must haves for long haul flights.

14. Travel Pillow

Your long haul flight essentials kit is not complete without a travel pillow . Inflatable travel pillows are great options because you can add as much (or as little) air as you like and when you’re not using them they’re easy to fold away in your bag.

15. Eye Mask and Ear Plugs

Eye mask and ear plugs are perfect for being able to block out the world on a long haul flight, especially if it is a night time flight.

16. Blanket Scarf

This essential item has so many uses but I find airplanes so cold and I the blankets on the planes are pretty thin so I love bringing a blanket scarf. These can be bulky but I am always so grateful for it when ever I use it!

17. Warm socks

I find warm fluffy socks really improve my flight experience more than you could imagine. Not only do I hate having a cold feet but I also find that any time I’m getting comfortable at home, I put on some warm fluffy socks. So why not use them on a long haul flight as well?

18. Compression Socks

If your feet or legs swell when you’re flying it is a great idea to grab a pair of compression socks . Compression socks can also help with deep vein thrombose when travelling, but make sure you are moving around during your long haul flight.

19. A change of clothes and spare underwear

There are a million reasons why you should always bring a change of clothes and spare underwear with you on the plane. Lost luggage? At least you have some fresh clothes for the first 24 hours of your trip. Flying from a hot country and to a cold country? Or maybe you’re just like me and you like to have fresh clothes on when you land!

A change of clothes is one of the top carry-on essentials for long flights. So don’t forget your change of underwear, a t shirt and a cardigan or jumper.

21. Slides or flip flops

As mentioned above, I love wearing socks during my flight but I never go to the toilet in just socks, is that water on the floor? I find slides are perfect for wearing over my socks to the toilet or just around in the plane in general.

22. Face mask

These days no body goes any where without a face mask but it is particularly important when travelling. To keep yourself and everybody else safe, please make sure you carry a mask with you next time you are on a plane.

23. Hand sanitizer

Along with a face mask, hand sanitizer can be found every where these days. It is something I have always travelled with but never used as much as I should. I love this hand sanitizer because it is cruelty free and not harsh on your skin.

A little squirt of hand sanitizer before you eat or touch a communal space can help keep us all safe and travelling.

24. Disinfectant wipes

Planes have always been known as not always being the cleanest places and airlines are saying that since 2020 they are cleaning the planes more thoroughly.

However, since I began taking long haul flights I have always wiped down my tray table, in flight entertainment unit (if there is one) and my arm rests I cannot recommend highly enough that you do this every time you fly.

They are an essential item for long flights. Disinfectant wipes don’t take up much room and they can make your flight more enjoyable knowing that you have cleaned your area.

25. Sunscreen

Not only is sunscreen essential for when you arrive in your destination but it is also one of the best travel essentials.

Even though you are at high altitudes if you are sitting on the window you can still be exposed to UVA. I always apply sunscreen before every flight and as I’m landing, even if its just a stop over.

26. Rain jacket

There is nothing worse than landing at London Heathrow after a 24 hour flight from Australia and it is pouring rain when you’re trying to get to your accommodation.

Ever since my first flight to London, I have always packed a light weight rain jacket in my carry on. It is much easier to access than if it is in your main luggage and you never know when you might need it.

27. Travel purse

Along with my carry on back pack, I always have a small purse that I have across my body. In this small bag I carry my passport, iPhone, credit cards, cash, spare sim card, tickets and really anything that is valuable to me.

These are things that are expensive, hard to replace or would make my travels very difficult if they got stolen.

Whenever I am on the plan I “wear” this bag or I have it sitting next to me on my seat. As it is so small it doesn’t count toward your carry on luggage and it gives me piece of mind that if I go to sleep my important things won’t get stolen.

I bought my travel purse in the leather markets in Florence (I highly recommend a visit when you’re in Florence ) but this one is quite similar .

The malmo castle in malmo

I highly recommend converting some of your home currency to the local currency of your first destination.

Depending on where you are going it can be quite hard to get money when you first land. You always need money at the airport, whether it is for the bus, a taxi or a transfer, you will need to pay for this.

I don’t like get stuck with only a card so I exchange about $100AUD so I am covered when I first get there.

I also always have about $100AUD on me at all times that I can change if I find I am stuck without any money.

Pro Tip: I never suggest carrying 100s of dollars in any currency just in case something happens and its gets stolen!

29. Notebook

I never travel with out a notebook . I sometimes write a diary during my travels but it is handy for noting down the places you want to see during your trip, you can write down directions for getting to your first nights accommodations as soon as you leave the airport.

It also provides you with some entertainment on the flight!

What use is a notebook if you don’t have a pen? Aside from being able to to write in your notebook, a pen is useful for filling out departure or arrival cards you need to fill in. You can’t always rely on flight attendants or fellow passengers to lend you a pen.

31. Entertainment

Someone hold green, red and blue uno cards with uno cards in a pile on a table next to a green passport case and a can of soft drink in the background. Uno cards are a must for entertainment on a long haul flight.

Most Long Haul Flights these days have inflight entertainment that includes music, movies, eBooks, TV shows and games.

However, sometimes you end up sitting in a seat where the entertainment is broken. Or you are on an older flight that doesn’t have the entertainment units.

Be prepared and bring your own entertainment. I like to pack a book because I am old school and like physical books but I also download podcasts before the flight leaves or bring my laptop with movies downloaded.

Entertainment is also very important if you end up stuck in an airport a lot longer than you thought, it is definitely one of the top must haves on a long flight.

I once booked a 17 hours lay over in the Middle East and I didn’t realise until I arrived. Let’s just say, I learnt every single corner of the airport!!

32. Universal Adapter

Universal adapters are one of the best travel accessories for long flights as they help you charge your devices no matter where you are in the world!

It takes away some of the preplanning you have to do and prevents you from having a hundred different adapters for countries you might only visit once.

33. USB cord

USB cords are definitely must haves for long flights! Whether you are using the USB socket on the plane or your portable charger, you will want to make sure you have a fully charged phone when you land!

34. Packing cubes

Packing cubes are not necessarily on the top of your “things to bring for long flights” list but, I hate trying to rummage around in my bag to find my socks at the very bottom of the bag, so I use packing cubes .

I use these in main luggage and my carry on to keep everything super organized.

I only started using packing cubes before my latest four month trip around Europe and I have no idea how I ever survived without them before!

35. Copy of your passport

A can of Maeloc Cider on a table next to glass filled with cider and ice and an Australian passport in front of the drinks

When travelling overseas I am always worried something will happen to my passport.

It is my life line when I’m travelling, it proves my identity but in a crisis it will also help if I turn up to the Australian Consulate any where.

Whilst nothing beats actually having your passport (it is a must have for international flights) if something goes wrong and you lose your passport or it gets stolen having a copy of it can help you get your new passport processed and to prove your identify without the actual passport.

I find a paper is sometimes more useful than having it stored on your phone incase you don’t have reception or battery.

36. Extra passport photo

As with the one above, carry a passport photo can help you get your new passport processed faster if you carry a spare passport photo with you.

37. Make sure you are covered

While this one is not a long haul flight essential in the fact that it fits in a kit, it is an essential in that you cannot leave home with out. Yes, I am talking about travel insurance.

What happens if you get sick abroad and need to go to hospital? What happens if you lose your luggage? What happens if you trip is cancelled? What happens if your accommodation is cancelled?

Someone lying in a hammock in an open living area

Fingers crossed, none of the above happen to you but you have to be covered if they do happen.

Especially, if it is a medical emergency. This is a situation that cannot be ignored and needs to be attended to straight away.

However, if you do not have travel insurance, these can be very expensive.

You should always, always, always, purchase travel insurance as soon as you have booked or paid for something related to your trip.

38. Don’t fight over the outlets

An iphone plugged into a power outlet

It seems that airports never have enough outlets and if they do, there is already a hundred travellers (okay, I may be slight exaggerating) crowded around it.

I find a Long Haul Flight Essential is having a fully charged phone and after travelling for 14 hours (and only being two thirds of the way) my phone is usually dying.

So, I have found a couple of “tricks”, that aren’t really tricks, to avoid the fight over the power outlets.

Away Carry On luggage – if you have purchased the Away luggage, you will have your handy power pack built in to your luggage. Just don’t forget to charge your luggage before your long haul flight.

Portable Power Pack – adding a portable power pack to your airplane essentials is pretty easy.

It doesn’t take up too much space and it will take away the stress of arriving in your destination with a flat battery and no idea how to get to your accommodation.

I love this power pack because it will charge my phone fully FIVE times and it charges very quickly.

Power Board – packing a power board will help when there are a quite a few people fighting over the same outlet.

These are also fantastic for hostels or if you travel with a few different electronics that need charging.

If you are using a Power Board, make sure it suits the plugs from your home country and bring your universal power adapte r so you can plug into any plug!

Preparing for your trip

The arc de triomphe

If you are like me, you’re constantly on pinterest before each long haul flight looking up things like “how to survive a long haul flight, long haul flight essentials, what to pack for a long haul flight, things to bring for a long flight, getting a free upgrade to business”

I won’t lie, you are not going to find the magic hack and your chances of getting upgrade to premium economy, let alone, business class (or first class) are very slim. However, it is important to start preparing for your long haul flight before you get to the airport.

Decide on your carry on luggage

Unless you are flying on a big international airline , most airlines will charge for luggage and will make you check in your carry on bag if it two grams over your allowance!

So make sure your carry on luggage meets the requirements .

When it comes to luggage, any kind of luggage, you need to think of it as an investment. You do not want to be half way through your trip and have your zipper break or your handle fall off.

You want to make sure that you have quality luggage that will last you for many years.

As a rough guide, your luggage should last you 8 – 10 years. This comes from someone who doesn’t exactly look after their luggage!!

I use my luggage as a seat, I drag it through airports, roll it down stairs – so don’t be like me…..look after your luggage and it will last you a long time!

Some of my luggage recommendations are:

The Away Roller Bags: These suitcases are beautiful! They are hard shelled cases with a built in laundry bag with compressor so it doesn’t become super bulky before you can find a laundry.

One side of the case is made for soft items such as clothing and the other side is for harder items such as shoes and toiletries.

I recommend the suitcase with the built in battery pack to help charge your electronics on the go.

Two away suitcases outside with a dog in the doorway

The Tortuga Outbreaker Backpack: If you prefer a backpack to a suitcase then the Outbreaker is the one for you.

It packs like a suitcase and carry’s like a backpack. The best thing about this pack is that is opens like a suitcase so you don’t have to pull everything out of your bag to find your hair tie that is all the way at the bottom!!

Make sure you’re covered with travel insurance

Don’t even think about skipping travel insurance when you book your trip.

Airlines usually won’t cover mishaps like delayed flights, lost luggage, or unexpected medical needs.

Trust me, I learned this the hard way: a jellyfish in Corfu left me not just in pain, but with a massive doctors bill.

Now, I get insured the second I book anything for a trip. If you can’t afford insurance, you can’t afford to travel, period

Top Tip: Make sure you check the policy you plan on purchasing because it will tell you exactly what you are covered for, so there are no nasty surprises.

Your Ultimate Guide to Essential Items for Airplane Travel: Pack Like a Pro for a Smooth Journey

According to a survey conducted by SmarterTravel, a whopping 94% of travelers regard their smartphone as the most essential item for airplane travel. But what about the other items that can make your flight not just bearable, but enjoyable?

  • Discover the must-have items for a hassle-free flight
  • Learn how to pack smart and comply with FAA regulations
  • Explore personal travel tips from seasoned travelers like Brian Kelly
  • Leverage technology for a smooth travel experience

The Essential Airplane Travel Kit

Technology is your best travel companion.

Fact: 94% of travelers consider their smartphone as the most essential item for airplane travel.

Smartphones can store your boarding pass, itinerary, hotel information, and more. Don't forget your charger or power bank to keep your device fueled up. E-readers or tablets can also keep you entertained during the flight.

Abide by the Liquids Rule

Fact: The FAA allows passengers to carry on board a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes, each container being 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less.

Airlines enforce this rule strictly . Make sure your toiletries conform to these limits. Miniature versions of your favorite products or travel-sized containers can be lifesavers.

Comfort Essentials

A good flight is a comfortable one. Brian Kelly , the founder of The Points Guy, quotes: "I always pack my travel essentials: a comfortable eye mask, noise-canceling headphones, and a soft, thick scarf that doubles as a blanket." These items, along with a neck pillow and compression socks, can make even the longest flights comfortable.

Snacks and Hydration

Airplane food may not always hit the spot. Pack some healthy snacks like nuts or protein bars. A collapsible water bottle will keep you hydrated throughout your journey.

Dress for Comfort

Layering is the key to airplane comfort. As temperatures may vary from the airport, the plane, to your destination, dressing in layers can ensure comfort at every stage. Easy to slip on-off shoes also aid the security check process.

Health Essentials

Air travel can take a toll on your health. Packing a small first-aid kit with essentials such as band-aids, pain relievers, motion sickness medication, and any prescription drugs you take is always a smart move. Don't forget your hand sanitizer and a pack of disinfecting wipes.

Entertainment Essentials

Long-haul flights can get boring, so make sure to bring your own entertainment. Load your device with ebooks, music, movies, or games that can function offline. A good book or a crossword puzzle can also be great companions.

Personal Insights and Secret Tips

Organize your essentials in a small bag or pouch for easy access. Remember, space is limited on planes. An organized packer is a happy traveler!

Also, keep a copy of your documents such as your passport and driver's license on your phone - they can be real lifesavers.

Maximizing the Tech Advantage

As our dependency on technology deepens, there's no denying that it can offer tremendous benefits to the savvy traveler. Use travel apps like Google Maps, TripAdvisor, and Duolingo to navigate, find local attractions, or even learn a few phrases of the local language. Wi-Fi can be unpredictable, so remember to download offline maps, movies, or music.

What are some essential items for airplane travel? These include a smartphone, charger, toiletries in appropriate sizes, comfort items like an eye mask or neck pillow, snacks, and a water bottle.

Can I bring full-sized toiletries on the plane? No, according to FAA regulations, each container must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less.

What items do frequent travelers recommend? Items like a comfortable eye mask, noise-canceling headphones, a soft scarf that doubles as a blanket, and a neck pillow are often recommended.

Is it necessary to carry a physical copy of my boarding pass? While it's not necessary, it's recommended to have a backup. Most travelers now use their smartphones for boarding passes, but technology can sometimes fail us.

What kind of snacks can I bring on a plane? Dry snacks like nuts, protein bars, or crackers are recommended. Note that there might be restrictions depending on your destination due to customs regulations.

What are some ways to make a long flight more comfortable? Items such as a neck pillow, eye mask, earplugs or noise-canceling headphones, and a blanket or warm scarf can contribute significantly to comfort during long flights. Also, regular movement and hydration are vital.

What should I wear for a long-haul flight? Wear breathable, loose-fitting clothes. Layering is recommended as it allows for adjustments according to varying temperatures. Slip-on shoes are also recommended for ease during security checks.

What health essentials should I carry? A basic first aid kit, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and prescription medications are all important. Remember to carry any necessary health-related documents as well.

How can I entertain myself during long flights? Books, music, movies, games, or learning apps are great options. Make sure they're downloaded and accessible offline.

Traveling doesn't have to be stressful. With the right essentials and a bit of planning, your journey can be as enjoyable as your destination.

Being prepared can take a lot of the stress out of travel. By taking the time to pack wisely, you'll ensure that you have everything you need for a comfortable, enjoyable flight. So, start your journey on the right foot by packing these essential items for airplane travel.

Holding 0.3oz of product, this tube is the perfect size to hold your favorite beauty products. The small size makes these balm containers perfect for carrying as part of your airplane essentials.

One reader says, “I love these for everything from a tinted moisturizer, sunscreen, hair gel, to medicated ointments, you name it. I bought a label maker just to keep them all identified.” Another adds, “I have these as well! I use these for most of my creams. They seem small but they hold enough for several weeks.”

We recommend reusable travel containers that you can use for toiletries for in-flight or general travel use!

Anker Portable Charger

Keep Connected with this Airplane Essential

While in-seat electrical plugs are becoming more common on airplanes, not all of them come equipped with one. So why take a chance?

This handy  Anker Portable Battery Charger is SUPER popular with readers! It’ll keep everything charged while on-the-go, which is a must while traveling and is especially useful in situations where a changing station isn’t readily available. It’s slim, lightweight, and works with all kinds of phones.

If you’re an iPhone user, you’ll love the iWalk portable charger . This reader fave is super convenient, as it plugs straight into an iPhone, no extra cords needed!

When it comes to packing my airplane travel kit, I like to pack a portable charger, especially in cases where I bring entertainment that might need a charge!

We round up some of the best portable chargers !

Hydro Flask Wide Mouth Straw Lid

Stay Hydrated on Your Long Haul Flight

You can’t bring a water bottle through TSA, and purchasing water, especially at the airport, is quite expensive. What do you do? A must-have in my travel essentials of what to bring on a long flight is a reusable water container!

When you’re looking for a water container, you’ll want quality. That typically means easy to use, portable, reusable, and BPA-free! The Hydro Flask Wide Mouth Straw Lid has all of those things and more! It’s reusable, portable, flexible, and dishwasher-safe. Plus, it comes in some pretty cute color choices.

Staying hydrated is essential for feeling fresh after a long haul flight , and that means having regular, easy access to water during your flight.

Yes, they serve water on the flight. But you often have to wait a while after take off for them to come by with it. Then you have to wait a while for them to come back again! But if you have a reusable water container in your airplane travel kit, all you have to do is fill it up before you board, and voila, you’ve got water!

MZOO Contoured Cup Sleeping Mask with Ear Plugs

Shut the World Out on a Long Flight

If you’re lucky enough to fly in a Boeing 787 Dreamliner that has optimal lighting — this probably doesn’t pertain to you. But for the rest of us, bringing along a sleep mask and earplugs is a plane essential!

If you’re hoping to get any sleep at all on the plane, an eye mask and ear plugs is one of the long haul flight essentials. An eye mask helps you control the lighting in the airplane, without disturbing anyone else. And earplugs help to shut out unwanted noises, especially if you’re a particularly sensitive sleeper.

These are especially important if you’re headed on a long haul flight and don’t want your first day to be completely lost to sleep and time adjustments. Plus these aren’t restricted to use on a plane. You can use them during your trip so that you’re ready to take on whatever sleeping accommodations you end up at!

I highly recommend adding a sleep mask and a set of earplugs to your airplane travel kit, so you can arrive at your destination well-rested!

These are the best eye masks for long-haul flights!

Bombas Compression Socks

Wear Compression Socks

Compression socks can help reduce the risk of blood clots in your legs and help you avoid that restless leg feeling when you’re trying to relax. One reader says, “I fly from Australia to the UK almost every year (a 24-hour flight) and I used to get really sore, aching legs until I discovered compression socks.” This could easily be the number one piece of advice on how to survive long international flights.

Along with socks, wear comfy clothing you can easily move around in, like leggings or loose pants, plus a t-shirt and layers in case it gets cold.

Find out how compression socks helped bring my toes back to life!

Bose QuietComfort 45 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones

Take Noise Canceling Headphones

Between the normal plane sounds and loud children, planes can be so noisy, which is awful when you’re trying to sleep or watch a movie.

So many readers recommend taking noise canceling headphones . We love over the ear headphones for comfort, but some prefer earbuds.

One reader says, “They are worth every penny,” while another says, “Noise canceling headphones help immensely on long flights. We bought Bose and they are definitely worth the investment.”

Here’s more tips on the best noise canceling headphones !

Purell Hand Sanitizing Travel Wipes

Things to Bring on a Long Flight: Antibacterial Wipes

My plane essentials ALWAYS include antibacterial wipes. The first thing I do when I get on the plane is wipe down my armrest and table tray — yes, I know they clean the plane before you get on, but they’re on a time crunch, so you never really know!

These Purell have an antibacterial formula, are hypoallergenic, and made with skin-conditioning aloe. They’re portable, convenient, and totally not greasy. Plus, unlike hand sanitizers, wipes actually remove dirt and grime (not just rub it in). I personally like the individually packed ones because they don’t dry out as quickly.

As an added bonus, having a pack of these around can be a lifesaver if you drop a spot of something on your blouse or brush your pant leg on dirt. Just wipe the mess down with one of these wipes, and you’ll be set!

These Wet Ones are definitely a must-have in your airplane travel kit, regardless of whether you’re on a long haul flight for a short trip!

Pack like a pro with my minimalist packing list !

Emergen-C Dietary Supplement Drink

What to Bring on a Long Flight: Vitamin C

Speaking of germs, even the thought of “cabin air” screams germs! That’s why one of my airplane essentials is vitamin C. Vitamin C helps keep my immune system up, to prevent any colds from taking hold in my body while I’m traveling to my destination.

These bad boys are chocked full of vitamins to keep your immune system in tip-top shape, without any of that sugar or other additives that you don’t want. These packets are caffeine-free (so it does not replace your morning coffee, should you have one), and the açai berry is the best flavor.

Keep in mind that these are actually a drink mix powder, not a pre-made drink. So you’ll need some water (which you should get after going through TSA so you can keep it) to mix it with on the plane. They are quick to dissolve packets, so you should have your fizzy vitamin C drink in no time.

No one wants to arrive at her destination and spend the next few days sick in bed, recovering from something she caught on the plane. So make sure your airplane travel kit includes something that helps your immune system, so you can explore your destination to its fullest potential!

PUR Sugarfree Chewing Gum

Avoid Ear Pressure with Mints or Gum

While the ear pressure that develops during take-off and landing is normal on a plane, it can be really uncomfortable. I’ve found one of the things to bring on a long flight is chewing gum or mints to avoid ear pressure pain, so I always make sure to bring a pack along in my airplane travel kit.

PUR Sugarfree Chewing Gum in many flavors help with that uncomfortable pop. Providing you 8 flavors, these are definitely a go-to. They have just the right amount of kick — Sugar Free + Aspartame Free + Gluten Free, Vegan & Keto Friendly

Whatever you choose to go with, something like this should definitely be considered a travel necessity, whether you’re on a long flight or not!

Mer Sea Travel Wrap

Long Haul Flight Essentials: Scarf to Keep You Warm

Is it just me, or do airplanes often feel a little on the cold side? They always tend to be colder than I’d like, which is never really welcome, but especially not on those long-haul flights. Since I can never seem to get the airplane temperature just as I like, I always bring along a scarf in my airplane travel kit to keep me warm, an awesome stylish addition to your travel capsule wardrobe .

A scarf like this Mer Sea Travel Wrap  is great because, as the name would suggest, it not only acts like a scarf but can double as a blanket. It’s cozy and portable. I like this one, in particular, because it’s not only cute but incredibly soft because of its cashmere and silk blend.

Really though, any scarf will do for your airplane essentials. Just make sure to pack one — or wear one — especially if you don’t like the idea of airline blankets!

Lessen the bulk in your suitcase by adding a light, stylish travel wrap to moderate and hot destinations!

Fire HD 10 Tablet with Alexa

What to Bring on a Long Flight: Entertainment

Your flight essentials must include entertainment, especially if you are on a long haul — you can only read the in-flight magazine and SkyMall catalog so many times (no, you do not need an electric egg cooker!).

I personally recommend a tablet like the Fire HD 10 , because it provides a host of entertainment options. Instead of having your bag stuffed with two books, five of your favorite magazines, an adult coloring book, and a notebook to pen your next bestseller (I don’t know what I’m going to want to do on the flight), you take one tablet.

What can you do on a tablet? Download television shows and films from Netflix, Prime Video, or Hulu for your flight. Read an e-book — if you’re looking to keep costs low, check and see if your local library has an e-book program — magazine, or “save for later” offline articles. Play a game, write a book, solve a puzzle, or even color. The options are endless!

If entertainment is not on your airplane travel kit, it’s going to be a really long flight.

Laptop or tablet ? Which to choose for travel?

TSA Approved Clear Travel Toiletry Bag

Keep Your Airplane Essentials in a Carrying Pouch

As a general rule, once I stow my carry-on luggage in the overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of me, it stays there. I don’t touch my luggage until I get off the plane. Instead of rummaging through my carry-on, I pack my airplane travel kit into one of these carrying pouches .

These TSA-approved bags are small and see-through. They fit into the seat pocket in front of you, so you’re not spreading out all over your fellow passengers. The pouch’s dimensions are 2 by 5 by 7 inches, making it perfect for carrying all your airplane essentials — except maybe your tablet, but you can just put that into your seat pocket on its own!

It might be an odd item in the what to bring on a long flight list of airplane must-haves, but it’s a time saver that will keep you organized because you don’t have to dig through your carry-on luggage. All your travel necessities will be easily accessible in the travel pouch!

I really needed to update my in-flight game. Thanks for the tips!

Mickey

This will be my first trip abroad. I have been concerned about the long flight. These tips are so helpful and will help with my anxiety. Thank you.

Jodie Beach

This is such a lifesaver – thank you! I am going to send this information to mu mother-in-law.

Lottie88

Ever since I got a seat with a broken reading light on a 12hr flight (overnight so cabin lights were off for most of it) I always ensure a small torch or book light in my carry-on.

Naomi

I absolutely love the empty lip gloss container idea for traveling with creams and lotions. Especially handy if you are only going for a weekend / short trip…even some of the “travel size” containers are still too big for a short trip. I’m going to use this idea!

Mercedes Fletcher

Thank you so much for the amazing tips…my wallet doesn’t thank you but my piece of mind does!

Jessica

Agree with and love everything listed…and:

1. Small bottle of my favourite leave-in conditioner to freshen hair and fight static. 2. Crossword/sudoku puzzles from local newspapers so you can share with person sitting beside you, rest your eyes from screen time, and then dispose when completed 3. Take photo of passport and boarding pass on my phone so I don’t have to dig through my purse to fill out the landing cards.

Hi Jessica, so pleased you enjoyed the article!! Thank you for sharing your essentials for making your flights more bearable with us. ✈️

Kathy

They sell those exact wet ones at the “dollar Tree” near my home. New York area chain Store. They have an online shop.

Hi Kathy, thank you for sharing this with us. Happy travels! ?

Christine Taylor

I’ve recently flown on the 787 Dreamliner in Ecconomy Plus with United, it was an amazing experience.

Hi Christine, thank you for sharing your experiences of your recent flight, so pleased your had an amazing time!! 🙂

Cassie

What was amazing? Would love to know.

Cathy Blackwell

This is a great list much of which I follow already! I’m curious, what do you include in the carrying pouch? I seem to be unable to do without my backpack being easily accessible from my seat. In addition to a change of clothes I also have my kindle, toiletries (lip balm, hand lotion, face cream, toothbrush & paste), Boise headphones, ipod, blanket-scarf, water bottle, ipad or laptop, extra battery, camera, all the electronic cords, medicines, trip paperwork, passport, credit cards, money …. I think that about covers it! Other than the change of clothes I don’t think I can do without any of this stuff at my seat! Help !!!!!!

alex

The carrying pouches are for the things I want to be easily accessible during the flight, like headphones, etc. A lot of the things you’ve listed don’t need to be at your seat with you. Medicine, for example, can go in the overhead! Happy travels!

Jennifer Bradley

Have to also have my toothbrush and paste, and some makeup for when I arrive. And a couple of books – all my flights are v. long so I need a lot of reading material – my Kindle is a godsend.

alex

ah yes, must have those in my day bag and ready to go 🙂

Heather

I love a Turkish Towel! They are huge, but fold up tiny, and dry fast. I use mine for everything; as a blanket on the plane, as an extra wrap if needed, to protect fragile souvenirs. I also love that the tight weave means they don’t collect sand if I use it as a beach towel.

Long haul flights are a source of angst for many travelers. However, with the right essentials for a long-haul flight, even a 15-hour plane ride can be pleasant – or, dare I say, fun . We love long flights (and actually prefer them over short stints in the air), but only because when we board the plane, we are armed with our Long-Haul Flights Essentials that makes traveling by plane a breeze!

Why Long Haul Flight Essentials are a Travel Necessity

Preparing for Australia: Spending the entire day at the airport isn't so bad with passes to the Club and views of the planes

Any plane journey over 6 hours is considered a long haul flight – and 6-plus hours is a long time to sit in a seat surrounded by strangers. While first class seats are, without a doubt, the most comfortable way to travel, the high price is a hindrance for most passengers.

Don’t fret! Travelers can experience comfort in economy seating by packing the essentials for a long haul flight.

We are covering the details of our Long Flight Essentials List that covers everything from clothing to entertainment – and even a few little luxuries – that will make the experience just a touch better.

Creating a List of Travel Essentials for Long-Haul Flights

To be honest, it took me some time to hone my skills to create a master list of essentials for long haul flights. On my first plane ride from the United States to Europe, I had made no effort to seek out long-haul flight tips…and I was woefully unprepared. It was a miserable plane trip – and when we landed in Paris I was grumpy and jet-lagged.

Determined not to make that mistake again, on subsequent plane trips I sought out the best long-haul flight tips and refined my list of flight essentials. The more we flew, the better prepared I was.

Now, as a full-time traveler, I don’t even think about how to survive a long-haul flight. With my travel hacks for long flights, I only look forward to enjoying the ride.

How To Survive Long Haul Flights

Sunrise on Leg 3 of our Epic Travel Day

Surviving a long-haul flight is not a difficult task if you have the right travel essentials for long flights. What I have learned in my travels is that long haul flight survival is not just limited to what you bring on long flights. It is equally important to consider what to wear on a long-haul flight.

It is these 2 things together – what to wear and what to bring – that ultimately make up our list of Long-Haul Flights Essentials.

Our list highlights the long haul essentials that you will want for your plane trip. Want a printed list? Get your FREE Printable Long Haul Flight Essentials list here !

Pro Tip: With only a few variations, this list can be used for long haul bus travel as well!

LONG HAUL FLIGHT: WHAT TO WEAR

Deciding what to wear on a long-haul flight is one of the key elements to enjoying the journey – so before we get to our list of Must Haves for Long Flights, let’s talk about clothing first.

Comfort Clothing: Long Flights Essentials

As you prepare for your plane journey, above all, your long-haul flight outfit must be comfortable. That said, outfits for long haul flights can be stylish – but comfort comes first (and, if you are most comfy wearing pajamas on a red-eye flight, some airlines provide them in First Class!).

Outfit Tips for Long Haul Flight

Because what you wear has such a big impact on your comfort, we have quite a few outfit tips for a long haul flight.

#1 Wear Layers

Wearing layers is one of the top tips on how to survive long flights in economy – or in any seat on the plane, to be truthful! Planes can be hot…and planes can be cold, and then hot again. And you, as a passenger, have no control over the thermostat.

Therefore, one of the best travel hacks for long flights is to wear layered clothing so that you are able to stay comfortable regardless of the stifling heat or cold air con.

#2 Elastic Waistband or Loose Dress Tips for Long Flights

It is common for most people to experience some swelling while flying – especially on long haul flights – so it is best to combat the swelling by wearing loose-fitting clothing or pants that offer a little stretch.

I prefer dresses on airplanes – over shirts and pants – because they are not binding. However, if you wear pants, I recommend that your long-haul flight pants have an elastic waistband for more comfort.

#3 Long Flight Hack for Women: Dress and Leggings Combo

One of the best Long Flight Hacks for outfits for women is to wear a loose dress – and leggings under the dress. The stretchy material of leggings makes it easy to move around the plane, stow luggage in the overhead compartment and get situated in your seat.

Furthermore, wearing leggings under a dress can help to keep you warm if the plane is frigidly cold…but if it gets too hot on the plane (which is often does during a flight), you can remove your leggings layer (possibly without even getting up from your seat!) to help you regulate your body temperature.

#4 Wear Things for a Long Flight that Add Style

An easy way to create a stylish long-haul flight outfit without sacrificing comfort is to add a simple accessory. Dress up your casual clothing with a colorful scarf or jewelry (but avoid rings that may feel too tight with swelling).

BONUS TIP: My Best Outfit for Long Haul Flight

I, personally, like to wear a loose-fitting dress as my long-haul travel outfit. Typically, when I fly I wear a loose casual dress (preferably with short sleeves). To complete my outfit, I layer it with leggings under the dress, a thin hoodie over the dress and sandals or slip on shoes.

WHAT TO TAKE ON LONG HAUL FLIGHT

Qantas Long Flight Airplane, Brisbane, AU

Now that you know what to wear, let’s chat about long flight carry on essentials. These are all of the long-haul flight accessories that you will want to pack in your hand luggage – things that will make surviving long-haul flights a lot easier!

Additional Clothes for Long Haul Flight

We already discussed the best outfits for long-haul flights, but there are a few more clothing items you should bring on your flight. In addition to the clothes that I wear as my outfit for long haul flight, I also pack a wrap, clean underwear and compression socks in my luggage that goes under the seat in front of me.

#5 Top Tips for Long Haul Flight Clothes: Bring a Wrap

My wrap is one of the most versatile items I travel with – and it is one of my must-haves for long haul flights. In flight, I can use it as a pillow, blanket, scarf, head cover or seat cover. It is one of the favorite items on my Packing List !

#6 What To Pack for a Long Haul Flight: Underwear

Packing clean underwear in a long-haul flight carry on is one of the hacks I picked up as a novice traveler. If you are going to check luggage (and the majority of your clothing), then packing a pair of underwear into your carry on luggage assures that you will have a clean pair…even if your checked luggage gets lost by the airline.

However, I often change into the clean pair of underwear in the plane bathroom before touching down (or in the airport bathroom on arrival). It just feels so much cleaner to start off in a city with a fresh pair!

Pro Travel Tips: Use my Packing Hacks for tips on the best way to pack – and get our top advice on ensuring your luggage doesn’t get lost by the airline!

#7 Extra Outfit: Best Long Flight Hacks

While a fresh pair of panties is one of my carry on essentials for long flights, for ultra long flights that are 12+ hour journeys, I like to pack a complete outfit change.

Donning a clean shirt, pants and undergarments feels so much better at the end of a long flight! I also advise freshening up – and I share my list of essential toiletries for long-haul flights a bit later in the article.

#8 Compression Socks are Long Flight Must Haves

It makes sense to pack socks for long haul flights for when cabin temperatures are too cold. However, regardless of the temperature, I think wearing compression socks is a necessity.

As unattractive as the long-haul flight socks may be, they have substantial health benefits, like reducing swelling and preventing blood clots (both of which can more easily occur on long haul flights). Plus, they will keep your feet warm.

Pro Tip: I wait to put my compression socks on until right before I board the plane. This way, I am wearing a clean pair of socks for the journey – and I even use a wet wipe (more about those later) to clean my toes before I put the clean socks on my feet.

#9 What To Take on Long Flights: Slippers

I think slippers are one of the Ultra Long Haul Flight Must Haves. Cozy plane slippers that have a rubber sole and are machine washable are ideal.

This way, you can keep your feet warm while on the plane – and you can still get up and walk around in the slippers during the flight. Plus, because of the rubber sole, you can wear them into the plane bathroom.

Airplane Essentials for Long Flights to Stay Healthy

Let me start off by saying that I am not a doctor, it is best to seek health advice for long haul flights from your medical provider. Bearing that in mind, there are a few things that I do for the benefit of my personal health while traveling on airplanes (and when traveling, in general).

Hand sanitizer, anti-bacterial wipes and a small medical kit are items that are in my long-haul flight hand luggage (and I use the wipes before I even sit in my seat!). Disposable toothbrushes come in handy on flights to keep your teeth and mouth clean as well.

Additionally, even though most planes are equipped with HEPA air filters that are tested to be 99% effective against viruses, a face covering may still be required for travel, so it’s a good idea to pack at least one (but it’s better to have two).

Top Tip: Find out more in our article, How To Stay Healthy While Traveling .

#10 What To Take on Long Flights: Antibacterial Sanitizer and Wipes

Traveling with antibacterial sanitizer and wipes just makes good sense – and it is one of our top Long Haul Flight Health Tips, too.

In fact, anti-bacterial hand sanitizer and wipes are plane essentials for long flights.

We have always used wet wipes to clean and disinfect our seats. Not only do we wipe down the entire seat and head rest, but we make sure to clean the arm rests, seat buckles, touch screen, seat back pocket and the tray table.

Pro Tip : Invest in a Long Flight Survival Kit that includes everything you need! An airplane germ-fighting kit is a great gift for travelers who will be taking long flights. For more travel gift tips, use our Top Unique Gifts for Travelers !

#11 Mini First Aid Kit is a Must Have for Long Haul Flights

A small med kit is also part of our long-haul carry on essentials. In our kit, we carry travel-size tums (for Jet Bloat), anti-diarrheal (just in case), pain relievers (like aspirin) and a few Band-aids – because, in general, these are just good items to have on hand.

A few other items that might make your Just In Case list of long flight necessities are tissues , nose saline and eye drops.

Pro Tip: I used to wear contacts – and quickly learned that bringing a pair of glasses on board is one of the long haul flight travel essentials for contact wearers! In fact, it might be best to take your contacts out prior to boarding and plan on wearing your glasses for the duration of the long flight.

#12 Disposable Toothbrushes are Good Things to Take on a Long Flight

Keeping my teeth and mouth clean during a flight is important! That said, taking a toothbrush and toothpaste into a germ-filled plane bathroom is not ideal (and the water is usually not potable!).

Instead, I use a convenient disposable toothbrush – which is designed as a one-time use toothbrush to be used without water, so I can brush and toss. If my only row mate is my husband, I can even brush my teeth right in my seat!

Because I like my mouth to feel fresh, I use several throughout the flight (after meals, before I fall asleep, when I wake up and before I disembark).

Additionally, flossers are good things to bring on a long flight so that you can even better clean in between your teeth.

Long Haul Flight Beauty Essentials

Having a beauty regime on a flight is one of the best tips for long haul flights…one that your skin will thank you for! My top beauty essentials for long haul flights are simple: lip balm and moisturizer. I think they are the two best items for long flights to help your skin. That said, there are many beauty essentials for a long flight and I highlight those, as well.

#13 Long Haul Flight Tips for Skincare: Lip Balm and Moisturizer

The dry air on airplanes can wreak havoc on skin, which is why lip balm and moisturizer are necessities. I carry a small hand moisturizer that can be used on my face, too – and I apply both the lotion and the lip balm liberally throughout the flight.

#14 Hydration Beauty Travel Essentials Long Flight

A hydrating face mist – like the one by Mario Badescu – can help your skin feel fantastic, even on a long flight. The facial spray is infused with aloe, herbs and rosewater to aid in rejuvenating your skin.

Another popular facial mist is the Evian Water Spritz . The micro-droplet mist hydrates your skin with pure Evian water. As with all liquid products that you take on a plane, be sure to bring the TSA approved travel size!

Dry sheet face masks (like the 111Skin Rose Gold Brightening Facial Mask ) or the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Face Mask cream are other long-haul flight skin care products that travelers use in-flight.

#15 Long Airplane Trip Essentials for Freshening Up

Some of the best items for long haul flights are the ones that revive and refresh you – even after a long redeye flight. We already talked about brushing teeth, but there are a few more things you can do to feel refreshed.

Waterless cleansing wipes ( like these !), underarm deodorant wipes and travel sized deodorant are freshening-up necessities for long flights.

Wondering what to bring on a long haul flight for your hair? Try a Dry Shampoo that will absorb oils and grease for a fresh-washed look.

Bonus Travel Beauty Tips Long Flights: No Make Up

One of the top long-haul flight beauty tips that some travelers find difficult to get on board with is to fly without wearing makeup. But, trust me, your skin will appreciate it! A made-up face will not likely last the duration of the long flight anyway.

Rather than wearing any makeup in-flight, I stop at the airport bathroom on arrival and – after I change into fresh underwear and clothes – I can wash my face and apply minimal makeup (so be sure to keep that in your carry on luggage, too!)

How To Survive Long Haul Flights in Economy Comfortably

Everyone knows that economy seats on a long flight are a bit uncomfortable (okay, maybe more than ‘a bit’). However, with the right economy essentials for a long haul flight, the ride can be so much more pleasant. As full-time travelers – with limited luggage space – these are not items that we personally use. However, I have to admit that when I notice my row mates using them, I am panged with jealousy.

#16 Airplane Hacks for Long Flights in Economy: A Seat Cushion

A memory foam seat cushion can make all the difference in a standard economy plane seat. This seat cushion is designed with travelers in mind – and is not only comfortable and supportive, by breathable and compact.

The Therm-a-Rest self-inflating seat cushion can also be used for long plane journeys – and it weights just 4 ounces.

#17 Best Travel Items for Long Flights for Comfort: Foot Hammock

Riding in economy on long-haul flights can by a struggle. That said, there are a few travel hacks – like the tray table foot hammock – that can exponentially increase your chances of surviving a long-haul flight in economy.

An on-board foot hammock helps to elevate your feet for a more comfortable flight…even in cramped spaces. The foot sling is also designed to prevent swelling.

#18 Fun Things for Long Flights

Want a first-class experience in economy seating? Upgrade your flying experience with a fun in-flight cocktail kit (these contain no alcohol and you must follow your airline’s on-board rules!).

The mini portable kits allow you to create a tasty cocktail so that you can enjoy an exceptional drink (in a much less expensive seat).

Long Plane Ride Essentials for Sleeping

Sleeping on a plane can be difficult, but not if you are prepared with the best long-haul flight accessories! For us, the best way to get sleep on an airplane is to eliminate light and noise – and we do so by using sleep masks and ear plugs – but we have several sleepy time travel tips for long flights.

#19 Long Haul Flying Tips for Sleeping In-Flight: Wear an Eye Mask

When it comes to sleeping masks, there are thousands to choose from. That said, for airplane sleeping masks, contoured sleeping masks that block out 100% of the light are ideal. The PrettyCare Sleep Mask comes in a set of two, is affordable and gets rave reviews from fellow travelers.

#20 Ear Plugs are the Best Things for Long Flights

We usually use cheap earplugs on flights – but light sleepers may benefit from noise canceling silicone sleeping ear plugs, like these .

Additionally, when my allergies cause congestion, I like to use Earplanes . Not only do they reduce cabin noise, but they are specially designed to relive air pressure and the resulting discomfort.

#21 What To Take on a Long Haul Flight: Travel Pillows

Most airlines offer pillows (and blankets) to all passengers – even those in economy – for longer flights, so you don’t necessarily need to bring your own pillow for plane travel. That said, a good travel pillow can be the difference between peacefully sleeping on a plane and struggling to fall asleep.

Luckily, I can sleep anywhere – so flight pillows for long haul flights are not an item we carry.

However, if you are looking for a long-haul flight pillow, there are a few the come highly rated by fellow travelers – like the trtl Pillow that earns rave reviews.

#22 Sleep Remedy Long Flight Tips

Many travelers sing the praises of taking a sleep remedy in order to get a little shut eye on a long haul flight.

A natural sleep remedy, like melatonin, or prescribed pills by your doctor might help you get the sleep you need on a plane. Before deciding to take anything on a flight, however, check with your doctor first. And, never try taking any remedy for the first time on an airplane.

Pro Tip : Lavender essential oil aromatherapy is also highly touted to help people get a few zzz’s on a flight – but, like with any fragrance on a plane, consider your neighboring passengers.

#23 White Noise or Meditation Apps for Long Distance Flight

Meditation and white noise apps are must haves for long plane rides – especially if you are a light sleeper! Coupled with a good pair of headphones (which we get to in the next section), you can enjoy pure bliss on your flight.

We recommend finding the right app long before your scheduled flight – and even try it out a few times to ensure it will help lull you to sleep. Make sure the app is downloaded to your phone and ready to go before your flight.

Long Flight Travel Essentials for Entertainment

Landing at SFO Airport, CA, USA

When it comes to long haul travel essentials, on-board entertainment is the thing that passes the time. Kris is happily entertained if he has a window seat, but I need something more directly engaging.

Thankfully, most long-haul airplanes are fitted with Seat Back Entertainment – thousands of movies and television shows at the touch of the screen. Utilizing the provided in-flight entertainment is an obvious choice when it comes to being entertained on a flight – but I never solely rely on it because it is not guaranteed.

Not all airlines offer seat-back entertainment – and a few low-cost carriers charge to use it. Sometimes the movie selection is not to my liking. And, in one case, my screen was broken (and – of course – it was on a totally full flight when there were no open seats I could switch to).

Therefore, it is essential to be prepared with things to do on long haul flights that don’t involve the provided in-flight entertainment.

#24 Long Haul Travel Tips for Entertainment: Noise Canceling Headphones

Earphones are travel essentials for long haul flights. In fact, I always bring two pairs…just in case one breaks or somehow gets lost.

Noise reducing headphones are an absolute dream on planes and definitely worth the upgrade if you don’t already have them. If you use wireless headphones , remember to bring the charger (and a back up wired pair, too, as you may need them to utilize the seat back entertainment options).

#25 Best Apps for Long-Haul Flights

We already covered using apps to help you sleep on flights, but there are a few other apps that we think are long plane trip essentials.

Two fantastic apps that should be downloaded and set up prior to take off are Audible (for audiobooks) and Spotify (for music).

That said, perhaps the very best apps for long flights are for the airline carrier you are flying. When you download the free flight carrier app, you typically have access to all of the movies and other digital entertainment options offered by the airline while in flight. Plus, you will have access to other pertinent flight information – like time left in flight, route maps and meal info.

#26 What To Bring on Long Flight: Power Bank and Chargers

One of the absolute essentials for long haul flights is fully charged devices. You do not want to board a flight without fully charged phones, tablets or laptops.

Even with a full charge, however, power cords are long haul plane essentials. Many seats now have USB ports where you can charge your device. (Check on SeatGuru to see if your seat has one, but keep in mind that things – planes and seats – can always change).

Just in case, however, we recommend bringing a portable charger on board, too (it’s not supposed to be in your checked luggage anyway).

As we already mentioned, make sure you download any music, books or apps that you will want to use in-flight prior to arriving at the airport.

#27 Non-Digital Hacks for Long Flights

Non-electronic entertainment is another one of our long-haul essentials. I usually have a book (an actual, paper book) that I can read, but sometimes I will opt for a newspaper or magazine. ( Love with a Chance of Drowning and The Yellow Envelope are two excellent travel books!)

Puzzle books – like Word Search, Crosswords and Sudoku – can provide hours of entertainment. For the sake of space, we recommend buying an all-in-one activity book that includes a variety of puzzles.

The quiet time on a plane also provides an excellent opportunity to journal, sketch or draw. As I always carry a notebook and pen, sometimes I write or jot down notes about my trip (but these cool travel journals are good for trips, too).

If you have travel companions, playing cards are good for long-haul flight entertainment, too. War and Rummy are two easy card games to play in flight – and, if you are flying solo, you can always play a game of Solitaire.

Playing cards are an everyday item that we recommend travelers pack for their trip. Find more tips for Everyday Items for Travel !

Long Haul Flight Snacks and Water

Food is one of my long-haul flight must-haves! Regardless of whether the airline serves included meals during the flight, I bring my own snacks and a water bottle on the plane.

#28 Long Haul Flying Tips: Food that is Healthy

While I am not a traveler that snubs my nose at plane food (I actually usually like it!), there are some instances where the offered dish is not to my liking…or simply not filling enough. To stave off any hunger pangs during the trip, I bring a few healthy snacks in my carryon.

Almonds, apples and granola bars are my go-to things to bring on long flights, as they are easy to pack and more filling than greasy, salty chips. (That said, some airlines do provide snacks – check what is available in the galley.)

#29 Best Hacks for Long Flights: Candies and Gum

Gum, mints and hard candies are something else we carry with us on flights. Chewing gum and sucking on hard candy can help to equalize the pressure in your ears (because swallowing opens the Eustachian Tubes) – so we like to have a piece of gum or candy on the descent.

Furthermore, gum and mints can help freshen your breath after a long flight!

#30 Water is a Must Have for Long Flights

Staying hydrated can help make plane travel a lot more comfortable (both during the flight and especially after!).

Drinking water is available to passengers throughout the flight (although some budget airlines might charge for it!) – but I still prefer to bring my own water bottle.

Having a closed container of water is much more preferable to the tiny cups of water many airlines provide (as I can tuck it into the seat back pocket). A collapsible water bottle is great for travelers! Once through security, fill up your bottle before you board your flight. Throughout the flight, you can ask the flight attendant for refills, too.

Flying over Indonesia on Malaysia Airlines during our Epic Travel Day

Now that you have your travel outfit selected, your list of things to bring for long flights and advice for what to do on a long-haul flight, we have a few more long-haul flight tips and tricks!

What Bag To Pack for Long Flight

Our tips for a long-haul flight include the best items that will make plane travel more comfortable and pleasant. However, when determining what to pack for a long haul flight, it is just as important to consider your actual packing strategy – as in, what bag to stow at your feet and how to pack it.

The items that we listed as long flight essentials should be within reach – even when the seatbelt sign is illuminated. Because they need to be easily accessible, it is best to pack these items in a good day bag that is stowed at your feet under the seat in front of you.

Carry On for Long Haul Flight Tips

With all of the cords and gadgets for long haul flights, carry on luggage can get messy…and things can get lost.

Because space is limited, it is best to use a bag that can easily be organized with multiple compartments and pockets.

We recommend that you organize your belongings with a Grid It Organizer so that you can easily find what you need in your bag during the flight.

Pro Traveler Tip: Want more luggage tips? Find out why love Packing Cubes and prefer traveling with a Backpack vs Suitcase !

Make a Personalized Flight Essentials Kit

Packing for a long-haul flight can be a daunting task. However, if you have a pre-packed long-haul flight survival kit, it will make the chore of packing an absolute breeze. To create your long-haul travel kit, start with your long-haul flight checklist (or get ours here !).

Identify all of the items on your list that you can leave packed in the long-haul flight kit (things like earplugs, sleep mask, water bottle, extra charging cords, etc). Gather them in a bag or storage box and check those off your list. Then, as your next trip approaches, all you need to do is grab the items already set to go from your long-haul flight travel kit – and then gather and pack the remaining items from your list.

Long Flight Tips for Exercise

Long haul flight exercises are a good way to fend off the unfortunate side effects of long-haul flights.

One of the best exercises for long haul flights is to simply get up and walk around. But you can also do easy in-seat exercises – like rolling your ankles, wrists, shoulders and neck – for better circulation.

Money Advice for Long-Haul Flights

While most commercial airlines include food, beverage and seat-back entertainment in the price of the ticket, low cost carriers that fly long-haul routes do not. If you are flying with a budget airline, cash and credit cards is one of the things to bring for a long flight!

What To Do on Long Flights to Avoid Jet Lag

It is likely that your long haul flight will cross time zones – which often results in dreaded jet lag on arrival. However, there are a few ways to avoid it!

Stay hydrated and avoid drinking alcohol on the flight. Before you start to snooze, adjust your sleep cycle to coincide with your arrival city. You can use an app, like Timeshifter, to help time out your sleep schedule.

Herbal remedies, like No Jet Lag pills , can also help – but talk to your doctor first.

Travel Insurance

Whether taking a long haul flight or making a short trip to the state next door, trip insurance can come in handy if things go awry. If you haven’t already booked travel insurance for your next vacation, check the affordable rates and robust coverage at World Nomads .

Long Flight Essentials: 20 Carry On Essentials For Long Flights

Posted on Last updated: March 14, 2023

Looking for all the carry-on essentials you will need on your next long flight? You’ve come to the right place!

As a full time travel blogger and part time tour leader I fly a lot. It’s part of my job description.

After countless 12+ hours cramped in a tiny airplane seat wishing I’d either downloaded a new book on my Kindle, or wishing I’d charged my laptop, or that I hadn’t forgotten my travel pillow, you can say I’ve learnt from experience and am kind of an expert on what carry on essentials you should always bring on long flights.

In this guide I’ve listed all the top long flight essentials you should always remember to pack in your carry on.

So learn from my mistakes, and read on to discover the carry on essentials for long flights that you always need!

  • 1.1 Travel pillow
  • 1.2 Sleeping mask
  • 1.3 Ear-plugs
  • 1.4 A pair of socks
  • 2.1 Noise cancelling headphones
  • 2.3 Laptop & camera
  • 3.1 Hand sanitiser
  • 3.2 Lip balm & moisturiser
  • 3.3 Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • 3.4 Clear cosmetics case for toiletries
  • 3.5 Chewing gum

  • 4.2 Collapsible water bottle
  • 4.3 Portable power bank
  • 4.4 Outfit change

Carry on essentials for sleeping on long flights

Travel pillow.

For years I refused to use a travel pillow. I would walk past them in airport shops and think they looked bulky, uncomfortable to carry around and they made you look ridiculous when you wear them.

After all I’ve always been able to sleep on planes without one so why bother.

However age catches up with all of us and when I started waking up from sleeping on planes with neck pains I figured it was time to give it a go. I have a Trtl travel pillow and love it.

It’s fairly small so it’s not too inconvenient to carry around, I usually strap it on the outside of my backpack so it doesn’t take up any space at all. It doesn’t look too ridiculous as far as travel pillows go and it’s super comfy, a win all round!

Now whether it’s a long flight, bus, train or car journey I always take it with me, a real carry on essential!

Purchase your Trtl travel pillow here!

Sleeping mask

If you’re trying to sleep on a plane and it’s not an overnight flight you might struggle with the lights turned on, it’s a good idea to pack a sleeping mask so you can cover your eyes.

Even if it’s an overnight flight and your number insists on having the light turned on you can still be in the dark and get some rest.

Click here to purchase your sleeping mask!

Similarly to the sleeping mask, whether it’s a night or day flight it’s always good to pack ear-plugs to help you sleep. You don’t want to find yourself next to a crying baby that will keep you awake for the whole flight.

A pair of socks

If you’re anything like me one of the first things you do when you get on a plane is removing your shoes. After all if I’m going to be sat there for hours, I want to be comfortable.

Especially if the seats next to me are free and I’m going to lie down to sleep, I don’t want to put my shoes on the seat.

However it’s also very inconvenient trying to shuffle your shoes back on in the dark whenever you want to go for a walk or to the toilet.

I always pack a pair of thick socks to wear on the plane so I can be comfortable while sat down and can walk easily around.

Find the perfect travel socks for you here!

Long flight essentials for entertainment

Noise cancelling headphones.

I like bringing my own headphones because let’s be real, the ones they give you on planes are always a bit rubbish.

I’ve also been on long flights where they didn’t provide headphones and my Kindle was out of battery so I found myself having to watch Kong with subtitles.

Let me tell you, despite the best efforts of whoever write subtitles, those explosions and fight scenes are not quite the same without audio.

Bring your own noise cancelling headphones and you’re sure to have your share of movies and music for your next long flight without disturbances!

Purchase your noise cancelling headphones here!

Long flight essentials to pack in your carry on bag

I love reading. I also love really long descriptive fantasy sagas like Lord of the Rings, which can be fairly inconvenient to take with you travelling if you have the “real book” paper copy.

Hard core book fans will tell you it’s not the same thing, you don’t have the pleasure of flicking the pages, the smell of a new book etcetera etcetera. As someone who can easily get through a book a day, I call bullshit.

Especially if you’re going on a long flight or on a long trip, you don’t want to be taking multiple heavy books with you. I made the switch to Kindle years ago and would never turn back.

The new ones also have an inbuilt light so you don’t even have to turn on the big overhead light during a flight and disturb all your neighbours (top that paper books!) Just remember to download enough books for your flight!

I also found that over the years it has saved me loads of money because there are lots of free books for Kindle, and the Kindle version is always cheaper than its paper equivalent.

Purchase your Kindle here!

Carry on essentials for long flights

Laptop & camera

I always pack my laptop and camera in my carry on, not necessarily because I will use them but more because I don’t want to risk them getting ruined or lost in the hold.

Plus if it’s the end of the trip you can entertain yourself looking back on your photos on your camera or you can do some work on your laptop.

You can also download movies on your laptop if you’re not sure you will like any of the movies in the inflight entertainment.

Health & beauty travel essentials for long flights

Hand sanitiser.

Moving on from essentials to help you sleep and fun essentials, it’s time to look at health and beauty essentials that will ensure you are feeling fabulous when you land at destination.

Number one long flight essential is a good hand sanitiser . With so many people coughing, sneezing, and even just breathing in a contained space for an extended period of time, planes are the perfect gathering location for germs.

Especially if you’re flying with children, you will want to add this to your family flying essentials . If you’re flying with a baby, you will also need an airplane bassinet , but don’t worry, as airlines will usually provide this (just remember to request it beforehand!)

Purchase your hand sanitiser for long flights here!

What to pack in your carry-on for long flights

Lip balm & moisturiser

Planes are not only packed with germs, they’re also incredibly dry. All that aircon might feel nice when you board in a hot country but it will dehydrate you really quickly.

Especially if you’re on a long flight make sure to pack some moisturiser and lip balm to keep your skin and lips hydrated.

Purchase your lip balm and moisturiser for your carry-on here!

Toothbrush & toothpaste

If you’re flying overnight or planning on sleeping on the plane, you should bring a small travel toothbrush and toothpaste with you. You will feel so much better after using it and you will land a fresh and new person.

Long flight essentials

Clear cosmetics case for toiletries

You will want to pack all these toiletry essential in a transparent case, so that when you pass through security at the airport you don’t have to unpack it every time and put the liquids in the transparent plastic bags.

You can get a TSA approved cosmetics case so they don’t have to stop you at security to go through your bag. You can also get tiny 100ml travel bottles to pour your liquids instead of having to buy new ones every time.

Purchase your TSA approved clear cosmetics case here!

Cala Corsara on the island of Spargi in Sardinia, Italy

Cala Corsara on the island of Spargi in Sardinia in August (a bit too many boats!)

Chewing gum

Chewing gum has a double use on flights; it makes your breath smell nicer if you can’t be bothered to get up and brush your teeth after sleeping on a plane, and it also helps with equalizing the pressure and avoids annoying pain in your ears.

First aid kit / essential medicines

Similarly to the laptop and camera, I always pack these in my carry-on not because I think I will need them (I really hope not!) but to avoid the off chance of them getting lost in the hold.

If you are taking any essential medicines you should always keep them in your carry-on, imagine if your luggage is lost and arrives a couple days later, you wouldn’t want to be without your medicines for that long!

Given that the incubation period of some diseases is quite long, you might board a plane feeling fine but suddenly feel unwell during the flight, you’ll be glad to have paracetamol and other basics available immediately.

Travel essentials to pack in your carry on bag for long flights

Other airplane essentials for long flights

Scarf or shawl.

Like I said before, planes always have strong air conditioning turned on. I always take a scarf, shawl or sarong with me to wear around my shoulders or as an additional blanket when I’m cold.

Collapsible water bottle

I know they serve water on planes and you can ask for it whenever you want, but I often find it easier to have my own bottle on me on top of that so I don’t have to disturb anyone during the flight if I’m thirsty.

I like the collapsible ones because once you’re done with it you can fold it over and it doesn’t take up as much space in your carry-on.

Purchase a collapsible water bottle here!

Long flight essentials

Portable power bank

I’ve been on a couple fancy new planes that have a USB port to charge your phone, but most airlines sadly don’t have this feature yet.

After running out of battery on my phone or Kindle at the most inconvenient times I now always take a portable power bank with me on flights.

It doesn’t take up much space and ensures my electronics are always charged when I need them to.

Long flight essentials

Outfit change

Especially if you’re going to a country with a very different climate from the one you set off from, you might want to keep an outfit change in your carry-on so that you can change into more appropriate clothes even before you land.

If you’re on a long flight chances are you’re going somewhere where you’ll have to fill in a landing card. I like to always carry a pen so I don’t have to ask other people or waiting around at passport control to fill in my details.

Best travel items for long flights

Last but not least, don’t forget to bring some food with you!

Yes airlines will give you food on a plane but it’s usually limited at meal times (eg. on a long overnight flight you usually get dinner and breakfast) but let’s be real, the food is never great or particularly abundant.

Plus even if you do eat everything you might still get hungry in between meals. I always pack some nut or cereal bars with me to keep me going.

17 Kits For Under $25K

Building economically can be done, but you’re going to be part of the cost savings.

airplane travel kit

It’s tempting for us to follow what’s new and get sucked toward the high end of our sport, but with markets reeling and everyone looking to do more with fewer dollars, we felt it would be smart to reassess the less costly end of the spectrum. So the thought experiment arrived as a completed idea: What kit can you buy for $25,000 or less? Now, before you begin thinking that this is, already, a wholly too large sum for the start of your project, consider that the average vehicle (statistically, a Ford pickup truck) costs around $37,000. Sure, that F-150 can take you to Home Depot, but can it take you flying? Not more than once, anyway.

airplane travel kit

A few things before you begin to flip to our survey. First, in order to get under the limit, some designs are in their “base” configuration, meaning no quickbuild components, no factory-sourced common parts (like wheels and brakes) and, for the most part, no engine, prop, electrical, avionics, interior or paint. Traditional thinking has the completed price of an Experimental/Amateur-Built aircraft at roughly three times the base kit cost, putting our bogey at $75,000 complete at the high end of this range. It doesn’t have to be.

Next, consider your aircraft needs. For some builders, the desire to move toward the most sophisticated, capable end of the spectrum piles on cost, complexity and build time. Instead, at this price level for a new kitbuilt, we’re talking basic, fun airplanes meant for good-weather flying. Sometimes not very far from home. But, if you think about it, that’s where many of us started, making a light, simple airplane a welcome bit of homecoming for experienced pilots. The key here is to keep the endpoint of the project in mind—what does the design want to be? Avoiding mission creep is the only way to stay within a modest budget.

There are other benefits to maintaining simplicity. A smaller engine needs less fuel, and therefore needs less fuel capacity; that gives you payload and performance. A carburetor will be cheaper to own in the long run than fuel injection—simply from the parts count, to say nothing of the possibility of finding what you need in the used-equipment bin—and a fixed-pitch prop will exchange more limited performance for—again—low weight and cost. Every one of these decisions in the simple-versus-complex thought process brings follow-on effects, some that are merely additive, some exponential.

A lighter, simpler airplane also means easier shopping in the avionics aisle. Gyro system? Forget it. Multiple nav/coms? Um, no. ADS-B ? Depends on where you’re based and where you want to fly. The trick to building a low-cost airplane is to actively scrutinize every line item. And then spend where safety depends on it: proper hardware, a solid (even if used) engine, proper restraints and thoughtful assembly.

Some of the company names you’re familiar with may not be here—even some that show up in our aircraft directory as currently in production. For this story, we once again reached out to check on the health of the suppliers and found some of them to be unresponsive. That doesn’t mean that they’re gone—we were in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, after all—but what it does suggest is that extreme caution is warranted before starting a design supported by them. The unfortunate truth is that creating kits for homebuilt aircraft rarely is lucrative. You may need a side business to support the fun side or, like Van’s, Zenith and a few others, do it at a scale that is profitable. We’re going to redouble our efforts to verify business condition as we set about updating our kit guide for 2021. (Prices listed are current as of April 2020.)

And last, you may notice some companies that we know are vital that are simply not represented. Kitfox has discontinued the Model IV, which was its only offering with a kit base at or below $25K. Same for RANS, which recently trimmed its model offerings, putting all of its models above the threshold. What does this really tell us? That constant improvement in basic kits—including more and doing more of the work at the factory, which the market has definitely responded to—has raised the price floor. With more builders demanding quickbuild options and willing to pay for them, you can hardly blame them.

Ace Aircraft Baby Ace

The Baby Ace, a long-distance cousin of the original Corben designs of the late 1920s, is in many ways the quintessential early homebuilt. This parasol-wing, open-cockpit “flivver” mounts a Continental C-85 up front, though several variants of Continental’s popular flat-four up to 120 hp will go, and provides a breezy 100-mph cruise. Top speed is just 10 mph greater, but it probably feels like a lot more with the wind rushing by your ears. With a gross weight of just 950 pounds, the Baby Ace is LSA legal. Three versions, the B, C and D are differentiated by landing-gear design and the shape of the tail.

Construction is a combination of CNC-cut steel-tube fuselage, some wood in the wings and otherwise conventional fabric covering. While the Baby Ace looks right as a taildragger, it can actually be built with a nosewheel. The options list is extensive, including your choice of fully welded fuselage shell, a pile of CNC-cut tubes or tack-welded tubes that you finish; the same choices exist for the tail feathers. You can also choose from a single 17-gallon fuselage tank or wing tanks totaling 23 gallons.

Aero Adventure Aventura HP

In the world of Experimental/Amateur-Built aircraft, there has always been a bit of crossover to ultralights. After all, our world didn’t start with the Lancair IV or the RV-10. And while the very light end of the market isn’t as robust as it once was, there are still some great options. The Aventura HP is among them. With the airframe kit starting at $22,000, the HP offers a choice of engines well suited to this modest point of entry: the Italian MZ 201 twin-cylinder, two-stroke of 45 hp; the MZ 202 of 60 hp; or the Rotax 582 of 64 hp. There are other Aventura models intended for the Rotax 912 or the AeroMomentum engine, but they’re more expensive kits.

This single-place, Dacron-covered amphib has a max-gross weight of just 750 pounds, which makes the most of the 60-ish horsepower on board. A 90-mph cruise speed will be sufficient to drop into local lakes or check out the nearby grass strip. The HP has a host of options available, including a carbon-fiber hull, a $2800 upcharge that still gets the whole airframe kit in under $25K.

Aeromarine-LSA Merlin

If you truly believe light is right, simpler is better and you have no need to take passengers along, the Merlin should be on your radar. The Czech design is largely conventional aluminum, with a cantilevered wing, single-seat cockpit and the option of either a Rotax 582 or the new Aeromarine 800cc V-twin engine with 60 hp. Performance is listed as 90–120 in cruise, variable by installed engine power. Max-gross weight is just 715 pounds, so it should not take much power to get the Merlin off the ground quickly.

Our own Paul Dye flew the airplane in 2016 and concluded that the “Merlin is what we think a Light Sport Aircraft should be—easy to maintain and fun to fly. With good handling qualities, it challenges the pilot to perfect their short landing technique, but in a friendly way that is low risk. The rugged construction should make it tolerant to the occasional mistake, and the cockpit layout is first-rate.”

airplane travel kit

Airdrome Aeroplanes Sopwith Camel

We chose the Sopwith Camel for this exercise but most of Airdrome’s replicas could meet our under-$25K kit cost criteria. They follow the classic simpler-is-better approach but the designs, while appearing quite anachronistic, have more than a bit of ultralight in them. For example, the major structure is made up of aluminum tube riveted together via gussets. It’s covered with conventional, lightweight Dacron.

Three years ago, Sam Buchanan chronicled the build of an Airdrome Fokker, and his experience suggests these aircraft are really best aimed at those with previous building experience and the willingness to improvise as you go. (Kind of like the roots of homebuilding, if you think about it.) There’s a strong support group, but these are definitely not paint-by-numbers aircraft.

Performance is modest. We’re talking airplanes whose cues come from the very earliest days of aviation. With the big Rotec radial, the full-sized Camel is good for 93 mph. Another option is a large VW-based engine, which does help keep the overall costs down. You can build any of the Airdrome designs for relatively little money and you’re almost certain to have the only one of its kind on your airport.

CGS Hawk Aviation Hawk Plus

It may seem incongruous for ultralight designs to need more baggage capacity, but it’s less unusual than you might think. We as a society like to take our stuff with us. Like camping gear. A big cooler of Mountain Dew. It’s your call.  With the Hawk Plus, what you get is basically a single-seat version of the twin-seat Hawk Arrow. With a base kit price around $15,000, it may be possible to build a complete Hawk Plus for near our kit-only cutoff point.

To do so, you’ll want to stick to the lower end of the Plus’s power spectrum, which runs from the 40-hp Rotax 447 all the way to the 65-hp HKS 700E four-stroke at the top; the Rotax 503 (50 hp) and Rotax 582 (65 hp) are also options. At 350 pounds empty against an 800-pound maximum-gross weight, the Hawk Plus has good payload. Cruise speed is listed as between 60 and 80 mph, so whatever it is you’re carrying in the back won’t need to get there too quickly. But, then again, when your only goal is simple aviating, speed is not always the prime concern.

Fisher Flying Products Dakota Hawk

As with Airdrome Aeroplanes, Fisher could well take over most of the spots on this list—at least 14 of the 17! The two-place Dakota Hawk is one of those friendly, high-utility aircraft that’s quite human sized; in fact, it’s the largest of the Fisher designs. You get a wing of 128 square feet on an airplane with a gross weight of just 1150 pounds, which affords strong climb performance and short takeoff and landing rolls. What you want in a utility design.

The Dakota Hawk can use a number of popular engines, from the stalwart Continental C-90/O-200 family to the Rotax 912 and 912S, on up to the Jabiru 3300. On the 80-hp 912, the Dakota Hawk’s performance is listed as 90–100 mph cruise and a climb rate of 800 to 1000 fpm. Stall speed is listed as 35 mph, no surprise given the wing loading. And speaking of wings, the Dakota Hawk has the option of folding feathers. The airplane is primarily wood but comes with Dacron fabric and Stewart adhesives in base form. Quickbuild components are also an option.

Hummel Aviation H5

Morry Hummel’s designs have always been about elegant minimalism, and that doesn’t stop with the thoroughly updated H5. The metal H5 can be built as a tri-gear or taildragger, with up to 85 hp. Most are built with converted VW four-cylinder engines, which provide excellent performance: cruise of 100–130 mph, 800–1200 fpm climb, all with a 42 mph stall speed. Empty weight is quoted as 460 pounds, against a max-gross of 850 pounds.

Like many small manufacturers, Hummel doesn’t officially create full kits. As Paul Dye reported when he visited, “Customers can simply buy a set of plans and get started, or they can choose to purchase blanks (precut sheet metal), fully formed parts, or partially completed assemblies. The price list shows virtually every part of the airplane, so builders can buy what they don’t want to fabricate, and start from scratch on other components. Hummel can also supply full-sized Mylar templates, allowing those who want to source their own aluminum to have accurate patterns.” Some pre-punched components help reduce build time and increase accuracy. Dye praised the H5’s handling, too. “Control in all three axes was excellent—quick and responsive, yet not twitchy. I was surprised, in fact, at the harmonious nature of the controls in an airplane whose design is still fairly young.”

airplane travel kit

Just Aircraft Highlander

The Just Highlander squeaks under our $25K kit limit by a mere $100, but it offers a significant amount of standard equipment, including tires and brakes, full elevator trim, fabric and adhesive, seat harnesses and cushions. Many other designs at or near this price point don’t include any interior at all. Of course, Just offers a long list of options to add to your bottom line, but you can start with a fairly complete base kit and go austere from there.

The Highlander has the middle-sized wing area of the four Just models and can be built as a taildragger or tri-gear. Cruise with a Rotax 912S on the nose is 105 mph. Like its stablemates, the Highlander is LSA compliant with a 1320-pound max gross; its empty weight is a claimed 615 pounds for a 705-pound max payload. Normal fuel is 18 gallons but 26 is an option. The turbocharged Rotax 914 is an option, but it’s an expensive engine and therefore isn’t likely to be chosen by anyone concerned with a low kit price. We’ve been impressed with the Highlander and Just Aircraft overall; the side-by-side Highlander has good utility, impressively short takeoff and landing distances and solid handling.

Kolb Aircraft Company Twinstar Mark III

Kolb’s Twinstar is something of a veteran in this field, with a profile that might as well be in the dictionary under “lightweight fun.” The pusher design has side-by-side seating and the ability to place a wide range of engines up and behind the cabin. From the affordable Rotax 503 two-stroke, builders can decide to spend more on the 64-hp 582 or significantly more on the four-cylinder, four-stroke Rotax 912S. The Jabiru 2200 four-cylinder is also an option.

Considering the Twinstar weighs just 1150 pounds at max gross, the 160 square feet of wing is more than generous, making for a low stall speed (a claimed 38 mph) and 1100 fpm climb rate with the 912S and two aboard. Cruise speeds run from less than 70 mph with the 503 up to 80 with the 912. Truth is, that much wing is great for lift but you can’t really outrun induced drag.

The base price of $23,529 does not include dual controls, brakes, or a fabric covering kit. It does, however, include a fully welded chrome-moly steel-tube cage as the primary structure. Both the wings and tail fold for storage.

Murphy Aircraft Mfg. Rebel

While the massive Moose gets most of the ink for Murphy, the compact, two-seat Rebel remains a viable, low-cost alternative. Notable for its roomy cabin, the Rebel combines low empty weight and a high max-gross (1600 pounds for the bigger engines, 1450 with the Rotax 912) for good utility. The Rebel airframe is mostly pre-punched aluminum.

Speaking of engines, the range is from the 80-hp Rotax 912 up to the Lycoming O-320 of 150-hp, with the O-235 the recommended middle option. Arguably, the Lycomings can be the better value if you find good candidates on the used market. Of course, if you’re thinking of going on floats later on, the O-320 is your choice. While cruise speed goes up a mere 5 mph (from 115 to 120 mph) between the O-235 and the O-320, climb gains a lot.

Like most mature kits, there are many options. You can add to the standard fuel capacity of 44 gallons (up to 58), change from the Cub-style gear to a spring-gear style and change from flaperons to split flaps/ailerons. Go wild, eh?

nV Aerospace KR-2S

Perhaps one of the less-appreciated designs of the 1970s, Ken Rand’s KR was known for its speed and efficiency. Well, it’s still with us under the nV Aerospace company, which continues to make kits for the KR-2 and KR-2S. The S, for stretched, is our choice here for the extra room. The additional 16 inches in length help with cabin comfort with more head- and legroom than the KR-2.

Originally an all-wood design, the KR-2S has a combination of wood and fiberglass—those parts are premolded—and those changes reportedly improve build time to just 800 hours. Trike or taildragger configurations are available.

Performance is excellent for the power, typically provided by a converted 2180cc VW, the Corvair six-cylinder or the Continental O-200. The VW and Continentals are in the 80- to 100-hp range and bring the KR-2S up to a cruise of 150–180 mph. The KR’s speed comes from its compact dimensions, including an 82-square-foot wing.

Sonex Aircraft Sonex-B

Sonex has made the case of being one of the leaders in affordable aircraft and that’s not an idle boast. Three of the five current Sonex kits , the Sonex-B, the Waiex-B and the Onex, all have base kit prices below $25,000. What’s more, it says something about the completeness of the kits that upgrading to quickbuild status adds a comparatively low $7600. If you follow Sonex’s worksheet, a completed Sonex-B or Waiex-B could be in your grasp for less than $40,000.

How Sonex does this is really through simplicity of design. They’re all-metal airplanes with blind pull rivets and straightforward systems. On the Sonex-B, you can choose several engines, including the AeroVee 80- and 100-hp Turbo variants, the Jabiru 3300, ULPower’s UL260 or UL350 or the Rotax 912. The AeroVee is the value leader at $7600 for the 80-hp version. For the Sonex-B, cruise speed at 8000 feet is given as 150 mph with the AeroVee, or 20 mph greater with the 120-hp Jabiru 3300. Empty weight will vary with equipment, of course, but the Sonex-B should give you between 480 and 530 pounds of useful load, depending on engine; the 120-hp engine allows an 1150-pound max gross.

Worth mentioning, too, is that Sonex has developed a truly comprehensive accessory and options list for all its designs. You can even have the Sonex-B (or Waiex-B or Onex) as either a taildragger or trike (with the tri-gear versions slightly more expensive).

Sport Performance Aviation LLC Panther

If you’re getting the sense that low-cost airplanes have fewer seats, you’re catching on. The Sport Performance Aviation Panther is just such a solo endeavor, but it’s not meant to be dull. Designed with handling manners that bring to mind gentleman aerobatics, the Panther combines good looks, fine handling and critical build elements meant to keep the cost down but the fun up.

Paul Dye flew the airplane way back in 2014 and said of the handling: “The airplane stayed where I put it in both pitch and roll, with no tendency towards divergence. Elevator trim was more than adequate and suitably quick to establish whatever speed condition I liked. The airplane liked to stay at whatever angle of bank I desired—little additional stick force was required to keep it in—or to keep it from steepening.”

The base kit is $15,995 and that includes pre-drilled aluminum wing skins, a steel fuselage structure that’s been fully welded and powder coated, the canopy and landing gear legs. The Panther is built around the Corvair six-cylinder engine and that helps keep costs down as well; however, other engines in the 100–120 hp range can be used. Two Panther versions are available: one with 93 square feet of wing for LSA compliance and one with a smaller, 85-square-foot wing for better performance.

Thorp Central S-18

Classic designs don’t have to fade away. John Thorp’s T-18 is nearly 60 years old, but it continues on with Thorp Central as the S-18. Two inches wider and 5 inches longer than the original, the S-18 is an all-metal design with a distinctive “cranked” wing that’s flat across the center and angles up at the outboard sections for dihedral effect. It’s also unusual in the homebuilt world for having an all-flying stabilator tail—something Thorp had experience with during the development of the Piper Cherokee. Wing area is just 86 square feet, giving good wing loading for the 1600-pound max gross weight. A similarly sized Van’s RV-6 weighs the same but has more wing.

Performance is strong in this one. Engines from the Lycoming O-290 up to the O-360 can be accommodated, and an S-18 with a 180-hp engine and constant-speed prop is said to go 180 mph in cruise and climb at a strong 1500 fpm. Currently, the full kit runs just over $20,000 for the two-seat taildragger.

Van’s Aircraft RV-4

It may surprise you to learn that three of Van’s basic kits slip under our $25,000 limit. As you’d expect, the RV-3 and RV-4 do, but so does the most basic version of the RV-7 (not the -A model, though). For that, you’ll have to forego the quickbuild options on the 7. Van’s helps you with this decision on the RV-3 and -4, since there are no quickbuild options.

We’ve chosen the two-seat RV-4 here because, well, it’s a sentimental favorite. One of the purest flying airplanes ever made, it’s an intrinsically simple design that by its size and nature seems to encourage builders to keep it that way. Where the similarly tandem RV-8 tends to end up more complex—more powerful, faster, heavier and costlier—the RV-4 seems perfectly happy in its role as a fly-for-fun design. Perfectly contented with 150–160 hp, the RV-4 is amazingly efficient, doing better than 200 mph on fuel flows that mean 32 gallons of fuel is generous, not stingy.

That the RV-4 is still with us more than 40 years since its introduction says a lot about the design and the desire of builders to have this lightweight marvel.

Wag-Aero Sportsman 2+2

Getting your kit components under $25,000 for a one- or two-place airplane is a challenge enough, but getting something with four seats that starts in the budget basement (so to speak) is fairly impressive. That’s the Wag-Aero Sportsman 2+2. It’s not a new design by any means, but a reproduction of Piper’s PA-14 Family Cruiser aircraft. That means a basic tube-and-fabric design, taildragger configuration and some form of four-cylinder Lycoming up front; Wag-Aero says power from 125 to 200 hp will do.

Performance reflects wing area and utility, meaning cruise is in the 120–125 mph range, with added horsepower adding most to rate of climb and shortening the takeoff roll. Maximum gross weight is 2200 pounds with an empty weight around 1100. Here’s another one where if you build it light you’ll be rewarded with impressive carrying capacity. Standard fuel is 39 gallons, generous with an O-320 up front. Handling is straightforward and very Piper-like. Wag-Aero allows you to choose among various options, like a fully welded or merely tack-welded fuselage frame, so if you have the skills to complete that part of the project, you can put more of your budget elsewhere.

Zenith Aircraft CH 650

Here’s another manufacturer capable of producing several of its basic kits at or below our $25K threshold. Thanks to the simplicity of design across the board and simple-to-manufacture aluminum structures, the Zenith kits lend themselves to low-cost builds. And this is despite the company’s extensive use of match-hole tooling—where the metal pieces fit together only one way—and blind pull rivets, which are much easier for neophyte builders to work with, albeit more expensive than conventional driven rivets. One advantage for the bottom line is that builders don’t need quite as extensive a tool set.

We’re highlighting the CH 650 in part because it’s become a little overshadowed by the high-wing CH 701 and 750 designs. Zenith says the 650 will cruise at 155–160 mph true airspeed at 8000 feet on around 100 hp. Like most Zenith models, the 650 can use a wide range of engines, with support for the Jabiru 3300, Rotax 912S, ULPower, Continental O-200 and Lycoming O-235. Although a bit heavier, the O-200 and O-235 options may be a tantalizing choice since these engines are more widely available used than either the Jabiru or Rotax.

I’m not sure what the point is of including models that don’t have at least one a year added to the FAA registry??

All the ones I could think of off the top of my head are here. Good list.

No Kitfox? No Avid?

Kitfox’s least expensive kit at the time was above the threshold, and Avid is no longer in business.

Very clearly stated that the kitfox model IV is no longer offered. The only model that was under 25K

How much would a Tailwind with a Corvair engine cost?

You might want to have included build times in your discussion.

That was so good.I was planning to build my own homemade airplane. But one should take aviation course before start building it. Where else can I take such a course? Is there any online course? If there is then can you please suggest websites or institutions that give such a course?

Go to a small local airfield and check around. There are computer ground school software that should bring you up to speed for the book learning but you will need to get instruction in flying at least in something similar that you wish to build. Tail draggers are planes like the J3 and Champ of bygone years. Then there are the Cessna 150 types.Tricycle gear is much different than learning on a tail dragger. I did both and solo flew both gear types before 40 hrs.

Are there any plans / kit for the Hartfield Little Bird Two ? Several You Tube post in this design. Seems like a good design to be battery powered.

So many planes so little time

Great selection of aircraft presented here. It’s interesting to note that most involve an investment of $35k-$50k dollars and countless hours to construct. Some factory-built airplanes can be had for less than that and you can be flying TODAY. It’s just something to think about. Many of these projects are started and are handed off to many other builders along the way before they take to the skies. But if you’re tenacious and realize you may sped DOUBLE your original estimate, have at it! . Small note: The kR1/KR2/KR2S we’re never “all-wood” aircraft. From the very beginning they used foam and fiberglass construction for the wings and empennage. It’s best to use an 0-200 if you plan on building one.

Great Comment. Thank You Carson

Do you have an airplane that is under $2,000

Sorry I meant to say under $1,000

None that come to mind, sorry.

Have you heard of any kits that are built to support an electric engine? Do you think any of the ones on this list might be good fits for that kind of innovation?

Sonex has been supporting electric propulsion for the Xenos motorglider. But that’s about it from this group.

Welcome to the world of kit-built airplanes !

In this article, we’ll explore the best airplane kits on the market (that won’t break the bank).

From sleek two-seat cross-country champions to rugged short takeoff and landing kits built for the backcountry, there’s a wealth of affordable options on the market.

Kitfox Series 7 Super Sport

Stepping into the light sport aircraft category, we have the Kitfox Series 7 Super Sport, a fan favorite for its balance between cost and functionality. This American-made kit continues to impress with its adaptability and versatility.

The Kitfox Super Sport also features foldable wings that can be folded within 15 minutes. This unique feature makes it easier to store and transport, which could save you some hefty hangar fees.

On top of this, the build time for the Series 7 is manageable, at around 800 to 1000 hours.

The Super Sport isn’t just about easy building and storage. It also brings solid performance to the table. With its impressive short take-off and landing (STOL) capability, you can take off from even the roughest of strips.

It’s also equipped for some serious cross-country cruising, with a cruising speed of around 100 knots, while only using 5 gallons of fuel per hour.

From the cockpit, the Super Sport offers excellent visibility, making your flights not only efficient but also breathtakingly scenic.

Adding to its versatility is the fact that you can convert the Series 7 from a tailwheel to a nose wheel. This makes the Series 7 the ultimate all-around affordable airplane kit.

While it’s a bit pricier than some of the other kits on our list, the blend of performance and versatility makes the Kitfox Series 7 Super Sport a worthy investment.

Vans RV-9-9A

For those of you seeking a more relaxed flying experience without sacrificing the excitement of building your own aircraft, look no further than the Van’s RV-9/9A.

It’s one of the most efficient, long-distance, two-seat airplanes you can build on a budget.

The RV-9/9A is designed with the cross-country flyer in mind. It’s not about racing or aerobatics; instead, this kit shines in comfortable, efficient, point-to-point travel. With the ability to cruise at 180 mph while sipping fuel, the RV-9/9A offers a very economical choice for those long, cross-country trips.

You can choose between the conventional (tailwheel) RV-9 or the tricycle gear RV-9A, depending on your preferences.

The building process is straightforward, thanks to the high-quality materials and comprehensive instructions provided by Van’s Aircraft. The kit is well-organized, and first-time builders can expect to complete the project within 2000 hours.

In terms of costs, the RV-9/9A kit is competitively priced, particularly when you consider the aircraft’s efficiency and performance.

All in all, if you’re looking for an affordable kit to build an airplane that offers efficient cruising and stable flight, the Van’s RV-9/9A deserves serious consideration.

Glasair Sportsman 2+2

Offering room for versatility and performance, the Glasair Sportsman 2+2 is a standout in our top affordable airplane kit list. Known for its robust build and flexible flight capabilities, this kit delivers quite a punch for the investment.

As the name suggests, the Sportsman 2+2 can carry up to four people or extra cargo if you’re on a long journey. This adaptability in seating configuration makes it a popular choice among recreational pilots and adventurers alike.

When it comes to performance, the Sportsman 2+2 can handle a range of terrain and weather conditions. With its impressive take-off and landing performance, this kit can land on grass strips, paved runways, and even water with optional floats.

The Glasair Sportsman 2+2’s build time is also a selling point. With Glasair’s Two Weeks to Taxi program, builders can have the airframe ready to fly in just two weeks, though the final finish work and testing will take additional time.

It’s one of the more expensive kits on our list, but the Sportsman 2+2’s superior capabilities and high-end features justify the investment.

If you’re looking for a kit that offers excellent performance, versatility, and a little extra room, the Glasair Sportsman 2+2 is a fantastic choice.

Rans S-21 Outbound

If bush flying and affordability are high on your checklist, the Rans S-21 Outbound might be your perfect match.

This two-seater kit from RANS Designs strikes a balance between cost and functionality which makes it a strong contender on our list of affordable airplane kits.

The S-21 Outbound is designed for both cross-country travel and off-airport operation. It offers impressive short take-off and landing (STOL) performance, allowing for some exciting backcountry adventures.

Yet, it’s equally capable of comfortable and efficient long-distance trips, with a cruise speed of around 110 knots.

Another highlight is the choice of construction material. The S-21 Outbound comes with an all-metal airframe, which is both durable and easier to repair than some other materials. Its high-wing design also gives you an excellent view, whether you’re navigating tricky terrain or just enjoying the scenery on a cross-country flight.

As for the build time, RANS Designs has focused on ease of assembly for the S-21 Outbound. Most builders can expect to complete the kit in about 500-800 hours (very quick!).

When considering cost, the S-21 Outbound kit is competitively priced, and you’ll have a choice between a 100-horsepower Rotax 912 ULS or a 180-horsepower Titan XIO-340.

Overall, if you’re looking for a multi-purpose aircraft that offers strong performance and easy construction at an affordable price, the Rans S-21 Outbound is definitely worth a look.

SkyReach BushCat

Next on our list of affordable airplane kits is the SkyReach BushCat. This two-seater, light-sport aircraft stands out for its easy assembly and low operating costs, making it a popular choice among kit builders on a budget.

The BushCat comes in both tri-gear and tailwheel versions, so you can choose based on your comfort and preference. Its high-wing design offers excellent visibility, and the wide, comfortable cabin is a definite bonus for longer flights.

Performance-wise, the BushCat is a capable performer. With a cruise speed of around 100 knots and short take-off and landing (STOL) capability, it can take you on varied adventures.

Whether you’re soaring high for cross-country flights or navigating unimproved strips, this aircraft has you covered.

When it comes to cost, the BushCat earns its place as one of the most affordable kits on the market.

In a nutshell, the SkyReach BushCat is a fantastic option if you’re looking for an affordable, easy-to-build kit that still offers good performance and flight characteristics.

Zenith CH 650B

Diving back into the world of low-wing aircraft, the Zenith CH 650B is a kit that blends affordability with style. This two-seater is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a sporty cross-country aircraft without straining your wallet.

The CH 650B is designed for cross-country flying with a cruise speed of around 120 knots, making it a capable performer for those long-distance trips.

Its responsive handling and low-wing design also lends to a sportier flying experience, which adds a level of fun to your flights.

When it comes to building, Zenith has a reputation for creating kits that are straightforward to assemble. The CH 650B is no exception. Its all-metal design is both durable and easy to work with, and most builders can expect to complete the kit in about 500-700 hours.

Cost-wise, the CH 650B kit is competitively priced, and you’ll struggle to find a better deal if you don’t need to go bush flying.

All in all, the Zenith CH 650B offers a sporty, affordable, and enjoyable build and flight-experience.

If you’re in the market for a low-wing kit that offers both performance and value, the CH 650B is definitely worth considering.

American Legend MOAC

With its powerful performance and rugged good looks, the American Legend MOAC (Mother Of All Cubs) stands out on our list of affordable airplane kits.

This aircraft not only brings a robust presence but also delivers impressive capabilities, especially for those who love off-airport operations.

The MOAC is designed as a two-seater, high-wing aircraft, echoing the style and feel of the classic Piper Cub. However, it comes with some modern twists, such as enhanced power and advanced avionics options.

When it comes to performance, the MOAC certainly holds its own. It comes equipped with a powerful engine that delivers 208 horsepower, allowing for exceptional short take-off and landing (STOL) capabilities. This makes the MOAC a perfect fit for backcountry adventures or any challenging terrain you might want to tackle.

Building the MOAC is a fairly straightforward process. American Legend Aircraft Company provides a well-organized kit with high-quality components and a detailed instruction manual.

While the cost of the MOAC kit is higher than some other options on this list, its power, performance, and rugged charm often make it a worthwhile investment.

If you’re drawn to the classic Cub design and want a high-performing, modern twist on this iconic aircraft, the American Legend MOAC is definitely an option worth exploring.

Comp Air 6

For those of you seeking a larger kit that still offers affordability, the Comp Air 6 by Aerocomp is an excellent choice. This six-seat, high-wing aircraft delivers both space and performance, making it a great pick for family trips or group adventures.

The Comp Air 6 is designed with bush flying in mind. With its powerful engine options and sturdy build, it can easily handle both paved runways and rugged off-airport operations. Its short take-off and landing (STOL) capability adds to its functionality, making it a reliable choice for varied flying conditions.

Inside the spacious cabin, you’ll find room for up to six people, a rarity among kit planes. This makes the Comp Air 6 a fantastic option for larger families or those who often travel with friends.

As for the build process, the Comp Air 6 comes as a composite kit. Although this may present a learning curve if you’re used to working with metal, it offers the advantage of a smoother, more aerodynamic finish. Expect the build time to be longer than some of the other kits on our list.

Cost-wise, the Comp Air 6 is definitely on the higher end of the “affordable” range. But when you consider the space and versatility it offers, it provides excellent value.

To sum it up, the Comp Air 6 provides an exciting opportunity to build a larger, versatile aircraft without breaking the bank. If you need more seats and enjoy the challenge of a more complex build, this kit should be on your radar.

Vans RV-7-7A

Let’s shift our focus back to two-seaters, where Van’s Aircraft takes another spot on our list with their RV-7/7A. This kit continues the tradition of Van’s Aircraft’s reputable RV series, combining affordability with a high level of performance and versatility.

The RV-7/7A comes in two versions: a tailwheel (RV-7) and a tricycle gear (RV-7A) variant. Both designs are known for their excellent handling and aerobatic capabilities. With a cruise speed of approximately 180 knots, these aircraft can get you where you’re going quickly and efficiently.

A key highlight of the RV-7/7A is its construction. The kits feature pre-punched parts that align perfectly, making the assembly process more straightforward than many other kits. This ease of assembly, combined with the kit’s comprehensive instructions, makes the RV-7/7A an ideal choice for first-time builders. The estimated build time is around 1500-2000 hours. Not bad, considering the complexity of this kit.

In terms of cost, the RV-7/7A kit is reasonably priced, keeping in line with Van’s Aircraft’s goal of making flight accessible to a wide range of people. As always, the final cost will depend on your choice of engine, avionics, and other custom options.

To wrap up, the Van’s RV-7/7A is a great blend of performance, versatility, and affordability. It’s a top-notch choice if you’re seeking a two-seater that offers a rewarding build process and a thrilling flight experience.

Aeromarine LSA Merlin

Last but certainly not least on our list is the Aeromarine LSA Merlin. This single-seat light sport aircraft kit is a prime choice for the solo aviator looking for an affordable and enjoyable flying experience.

The Merlin is compact, efficient, and built for fun. Its design is optimized for performance and handling, allowing for an engaging and responsive flying experience. Whether you’re doing touch-and-go landings at your local airfield or exploring the countryside from above, the Merlin delivers.

The aircraft’s design simplifies construction, and most builders can complete their project in approximately 300 hours. This makes the Merlin one of the quickest builds in the light sport aircraft category.

Pricing for the Merlin is among the most affordable in the kit aircraft market. The standard kit comes with everything needed to build the airframe, and even when factoring in the cost of the engine and avionics, the overall investment is modest compared to many other kits.

The Aeromarine LSA Merlin is a top pick for anyone seeking a cost-effective, solo flying experience. Its quick build time and enjoyable flight characteristics make it an excellent value for the money. If you’re a single pilot looking to get in the air without a hefty investment, you’ll find a lot to love about the Merlin.
