Return to Japan: Intrepid Travel Leads Surge of New Tours

Return to Japan: Intrepid Travel Leads Surge of New Tours

In October 2022, Japan re-opened for unrestricted foreign tourism for the first time in two years since the pandemic closed its borders.

Tour operators like Intrepid Travel are seeing a boom in visitors as pent-up demand is making the country one of the prime destinations for 2023. Intrepid has announced more than 240 Japan trip departures in 2023, according to Kenny Onishi, Intrepid’s general manager in Japan.

What should visitors expect on these re-introduced Japan tours, and what tips should travel advisors give customers? I joined one of Intrepid’s first Japan tours after the opening, and share below both tour highlights and key learnings from my experience.

What visitors should know about travel to Japan:

  • No Visa for Americans, but pre-registration is required: Japan has ended the temporary visa requirement for American tourists, but incoming visitors still must pre-register via Visit Japan Web with proof of vaccination or recent test results. Clients (and tour companies) should be advised to check the S. Embassy in Japan website for the latest information.
  • J apan is historically inexpensive right now. While the dollar has retreated from a recent 30-year high against the yen, current figures of 130 yen to the dollar mean travelers will see in-country prices converting about 25% cheaper than pre-pandemic. That means more affordable shopping, dining, attractions, transport, and lodging. Organized tour prices in dollars have remained steady.
  • Mask-wearing is still nearly universal in Japan. Visitors should be aware that many shops, hotel lobbies, transport, and attractions continue to require masks for protection against COVID-19, although there is no official government mandate. Most Japanese still wear masks at all times in public, with the exception of dining and some outdoor activities.
  • Fewer visitors to Japan means now is a great time to visit . Given the continued lack of tourism from China, which normally supplies 60% of total inbound visitors, according to Intrepid’s Onishi, Japan’s visitor figures are still down. Fewer visitors to tourist attractions, at least for the short to mid-term, means now is a great time to book a trip.

Tour Highlights: Intrepid Travel’s Premium Japan Tour Intrepid Travel, long a leader in Japan tours, has an impressive array of 240 scheduled trip departures on more than a dozen unique itineraries for 2023. The trips run from 8 to 24 days with budget, luxury, cultural immersion, foodie, family, and action-adventure options available.

I joined Intrepid’s Premium Japan Tour , a 12-day journey covering the country’s cultural and scenic highlights. The “Premium” experience (tours begin at $7435 per person, not including airfare) gives customers a higher level of lodging and dining selections, along with unique experiences like a sushi-making class, and a meditation retreat in a classic Kyoto Zen shrine.

A bilingual local expert-led our tour, bringing our group of eight guests on daily excursions and also giving suggestions and navigation tips for free time activities. Tour sizes are typically 8-12 people, with combinations of both couples and solo travelers.

Our trip began in Tokyo, which is at once the most intimidating and accessible city in Japan. The crowded, sprawling, neon-lit metropolis can be overwhelming on one’s own, but is actually highly accessible with its ultra-efficient rail system. Our guide navigated the rainbow spaghetti maps of two dozen different train lines to whisk us around town like VIPs.

The tour’s hotel for the first couple of nights was on the upper end of a three-star hotel (typical for the trip), with inclusive breakfast buffets, great views, and nearby access to prime sightseeing locations. Tokyo’s famed Asakusa shrine was footsteps away, enabling us to visit early morning to beat the crowds.

The highlight of the Tokyo tour, for me, was the full foodie immersion walking through Tokyo’s Tsukiji street markets sampling every manner of freshly prepared seafood followed by a sushi-making class.

The tour took efforts to balance the urban with the rural, taking us to the UNESCO heritage site of the Takayama mountain farming community, with traditional straw A-frame homes set amidst stunning alpine scenery. We also sailed the dazzling blue lake waters in Hakone National Park near snow-peaked Mt. Fuji, feeling as if we were in the middle of a picture postcard.

The trip continued, via the Shinkansen bullet train to Hiroshima, for a sobering history lesson at the Peace Park memorials. The mood was lightened by an exploration of local cuisine and parks.

Kyoto’s status as Japan’s classical capital makes it an essential stop on any Japan tour. The Intrepid journey concluded there, with visits to centuries-old classic shrines and temples, interspersed with dining on traditional Kaiseki meals that were as tasty as they were artistic.

For first-timers to Japan, Intrepid’s Premium Japan Tour hits all the highlights, providing both a breadth and depth of experience to supply visitors with stories to share for years to come. The only downside of such a comprehensive tour is the time spent on transport between locations, with multiple multi-hour train rides required. For clients looking for more depth and less travel, I’d recommend tours with less geographic scope, focused on a specific region. Clients can always return for more!

Here's what you can expect on a Lonely Planet Experiences tour of Japan

Nine days, three cities, and countless bowls of ramen. Lonely Planet Experiences  Japan Express tour powered by Intrepid Travel takes a leaf out of the bullet train’s book by covering vast terrain with supreme efficiency.

Sure, we’d all like to spend a few weeks (okay, months) in Japan but if time is of the essence, then joining a tour is a clever way to drink in Japan’s cultural, culinary and historic highlights without wasting a drop. After all, this is a nation famous for championing time-saving creations like bullet trains, vending machines and convenience stores. When in Rome…

Someone wearing a bright yellow raincoat stands with their back to the camera, looking up at the colourful signs in the electronic town district of Akihabara, Tokyo.

First stop: Tokyo

Upon arrival, Tokyo is the kind of city that gives you butterflies in your stomach. A neon-lit metropolis filled with promise, Japan’s capital presents a dilemma for travellers: just how do you tackle it? Joining a tour takes the guess work out of the equation by providing a blueprint. On the first night, our group breaks the ice at an izakaya recommended by our trusty leader. Japan’s answer to a pub, we join ‘salarymen’ downing after-work lagers and soon feel like old (albeit jetlagged) friends.

A booking icon for the Japan Express tour by Lonely Planet Experiences

Over the next three days, Tokyo’s highlights reel is played in high-definition technicolour. We stroll through Yoyogi-kōen  (a sprawling green space smack-bang in the middle of the city), scramble across the famous Shibuya crossing (an intersection considered the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing), and geek-out over the anime-themed cafes and gadget stores of the dazzling Akihabara district .

A tiny alley crowded with night bars and clubs in Shinjuku, Tokyo at night

I discover that some of Japan’s best food is found underground. Department store food halls (known as depachika ) are a food scene within themselves, and Shinjuku Takashimaya has one of the city’s best. There’s mochi (little rice cakes), Paris-worthy pastries, fancy fruit that comes with an equally fancy price tag and a KitKat store selling limited edition flavours (the jury’s still out on corn flavoured KitKats).

We also visit hyped-up Harajuku , a pop cultural wonderland that’s home to Insta-famous desserts like oversized rainbow-tinged fairy floss and towering soft serve ice creams that defy the laws of gravity.

Travelling with a local guide is a bit like having a fast-pass at a theme park. He shows us shortcuts to getting around, points out the best places to eat, and explains the ins and outs of Japanese culture (like deciphering the buttons on Japan’s high-tech toilets). I’d be lost without him (figuratively and literally).

A red bridge spans a river and is surrounded by autumnal foliage in Nikko, Japan

Next stop: Nikkō

After the sensory overload of Tokyo, we switch gears and head to Nikkō . Located in the mountainous Tochigi prefecture, Nikko’s lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs are a welcome change of pace.

The train to Nikko takes two hours and while it’s not a bullet train, it’s still an efficient affair. With carte blanche to do whatever I want, I visit Tōshō-gū shrine , a forest-fringed Shinto complex. Decorated with gold leaf and intricate carvings, it’s easy to lose track of time in this enchanting place, originally built during the Edo period.

Paradoxically, the key to nailing group travel is spending time on your own. It’s important to find the sweet spot between having buddies to belt out nineties power ballads with in karaoke clubs and also having enough ‘me time’. It’s a hard balancing act to nail, but this tour gets it right.

The following day we set off on a group hike to Senjōgahara Shizen-kenkyu-rō , a scenic spot where mountain, waterfall and lake views max out our camera memory cards. Nikko is just that photogenic.

A couple crouching down in a street covered with cherry blossoms to look at the petals in Kyoto

Final stop: Kyoto

One of Japan’s superpowers is elevating unremarkable things to stratospheric levels of awesome. This is certainly the case when riding the shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto . Before boarding, I’m overwhelmed by the train station eats on offer. After fawning over the range of ekiben (beautifully packaged bento box meals), I board the train and enjoy the seriously smooth, three-hour ride to Japan’s former capital.

Kyoto is a history book come to life, with thousands of temples, shrines and gardens just made for exploring. Fushimi Inari-Taisha is the most famous (and busiest) thanks to its thousands of red torii (shrine gates). It’s crowded when we visit, but it’s one of those deeply atmospheric places you really can’t miss.

With freedom to explore, I take my time savouring matcha in teahouses , and buying handcrafted ceramics from pottery studios. A walking tour of Gion reveals geisha history and one fortuitous (although brief) sighting of a kimono-clad geisha turning a corner before disappearing down an alley.

A tour boat sails down the canal past the Heian Shrine lined with cherry blossom and other trees in Kyoto on a sunny day

By night, some of the group splash out on a traditional kaiseki dinner (a multi-course, seasonal meal), others line up for the best ramen in town and some grab some onigiri from a 7-Eleven. From lauded restaurants to ramen joints and convenience stores – all are legit and tasty options in Japan.

On our final night, we celebrate with a group dinner at a tiny, no-fuss eatery known for serving unforgettable tofu. If it weren’t for our guide, we’d never have found it. Thanks to the city’s strong Buddhist heritage, exceptional vegetarian fare is everywhere in Kyoto, a place awash in artisanal tofu.

My time in Japan passes like a pub quiz lightning round, with the clock ticking as soon as the aircraft wheels hit the tarmac. After nine days, my time is up, but my matcha bowl is full.

Welcome to Japan!

On the first day of your 13-day budget Japan tour, you will meet your Adventure Leader in the lobby of the Tokyo hostel in the morning. You’ll drop off your luggage and have a briefing, where you’ll discuss the itinerary and get to know your fellow travellers.

After this, we’re off to your first destination – the Tsukiji Outer Market. We’ll be visiting over lunchtime, so be sure to try some delicious fresh sashimi while you’re there! Next, we’re heading into the Asakusa District, where we’ll visit the stunning Sensō-Ji temple, Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple.

Next, soak up the incredible views from the top of the Metropolitan Government Building and then take part in some optional activities. You can either experience one of Japan’s national obsessions (baseball, at a local batting cage) or kick back and relax with a drink – or bathe with the locals at a nearby bathhouse.

Sushi Making & Electric Town

In the morning, you’ll discover the Japanese art of sushi-making with an unforgettable lesson from a sushi chef, and then sample your creations.

Later, you’ll visit Akihabara, Japan’s ‘Electric Town’ and hub of Anime. It’s also home to Japan’s most famous J-pop group, AKB48. You will find venues specialising in manga and games, including the Tokyo Anime Center. Here, you can take part in an optional ‘Made in Tokyo’ experience at one of the Akihabara’s maid cafes. You can either spend your afternoon exploring the city some more under your own steam, or you can opt for a rip-roaring optional activity: Kartoon Karting! Please note this needs to be booked at leasst 6 weeks before the departure.

In the evening, you’ll all head to Golden Gai – here, you’ll get a walking tour of the street, before diving into a local bar and sampling the Japanese nightlife.

Contrasts of Tokyo

Kick off your morning with an early trip to the Tokyo Imperial Palace. While here, you’ll explore the Nijubashi Bridge, and the Imperial Palace’s stunning gardens.

Once we’ve finished exploring, we’ll head off to the Sumo District. Spend some time exploring with your Adventure Leader, which is filled with stadiums, stables, and all things summer. Over lunch, you can either spend some time exploring by yourself, or join an additional optional activity and meet ex-sumo wrestlers for a traditional sumo lunch of tonkatsu and chanko-nabe.

In the early afternoon, we’ll pay a visit to the Sumo Museum, a treasure trove filled with all things sumo wrestling. [Note: on occasion the Museum may be closed, so we’ll instead visit Edo Noren.]

We’ll head back to the accommodation in the mid-afternoon, where you’ll be well placed to spend the rest of the day exploring Tokyo by yourselves. This evening, we’d recommend taking to the streets of Roppongi to experience some more of the city’s great nightlife.

You can also book an optional Sumo Experience with lunch where you can talk to ex Sumo wrestlers to learn more about their lifestyle. Please note that this needs to be pre-booked at least 8 weeks before your tour.

Exploring Tokyo

We’ll start our day at the Meiji Shrine, an iconic location in Tokyo dedicated to the beloved Emperor Meiji – who was famed for thrusting Japan into the industrial age. It’s also importantly dedicated to his wife, the Empress Shōken.

After this, we’ll head to Harajuku – in Tokyo’s number one fashion district, you will encounter punks, goths, technicolour hair – anything goes! Here, we’ll spend some time exploring everything the bustling streets have to offer, from secondhand shops like Chicago to famous restaurants. We’ll then head to the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing – Shibuya! It’s one of the most famous sights in the entire city, with millions of people crossing here every day.

On your last afternoon in Tokyo, you’ll have the afternoon to explore. What you choose to do is up to you – you might even want a break! However, if you’re up for more exploring, we recommend:

The Hokusai Museum in Ryogoku, which is dedicated to the work and life of the famed painter of the Great Wave of Kanagawa. In Odaiba, you might want to head to Joypolis, the vast indoor amusement park,or spend some time on the waterfront.

One of the hottest attractions in Tokyo is teamLab Planets – a huge art gallery made up of immersive installations that combine the natural world with the digital age. If Tsukiji left you wanting more, a visit to Toyosu Market will help you try some of the freshest fish in the city.

Bid farewell to the nation’s capital and transfer to your next destination on the budget Japan tour – the beautiful coastal Kamakura. You’ll arrive in the late morning, with enough time to check into the accommodation before heading out to find some lunch.

Once you’ve eaten, we’ll take you around the town, exploring some of the area’s most beautiful locations. You’ll see the many ancient shrines, before we hike over to Kotoku-in Temple to see the giant Great Buddha statue – a UNESCO World Heritage site. From there, we’ll hike over to the Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku shrine, a beautiful example of the Buddhist-Shinto fusion. We’ll then hike back to Kamakura itself, where you can either stay to enjoy the town yourself or head back to rest up.

Your evening is yours to spend as you see fit – we’d recommend exploring the town’s stunning sandy beaches, taking in the sun as it sets over the shoreline. From there, you can explore many of the local area’s restaurants to try some delicious local seafood and produce.

The Hakone National Park

From the seas to the slopes – this morning, you’ll transfer to Hakone by train and bus. Once we’ve arrived in the late morning, we’ll start off by stretching our legs with a hike along the Old Tokaido. Once an important route connecting Tokyo with Kyoto, the section around Hakone is well-preserved and dates back centuries! We’ll end up in Moto-Hakone, where we’ll grab lunch.

Afterwards, it’s time to take to the waters of Lake Ashi for a sightseeing cruise with a twist – it’s a pirate ship! From the deck of this man-of-war ship, you’ll cross the Lake’s clear blue waters – on a cloudless day, you’ll get unforgettable views of the iconic Mount Fuji.

Once we’re off the ship, we’re not back on land for long. We’ll take the Hakone Ropeway to Owakudani, an active volcano zone! Here, try black eggs – they’re cooked in the area’s sulfuric waters, and are rumoured to add seven years to your life.

You’ve got an amazing afternoon and evening laid out ahead of you. We’re taking you to a traditional Japanese outdoor bath – an onsen – where you can spend time soaking in the waters. They’re meant to have healing properties – in addition to how relaxing it is!

This evening, change into your yukuta after a long bathing session, ready to learn about the art of Japanese rice wine. However, we all know that the best way to learn is by doing – so the sake tasting session that’s included should make sure you leave knowledgeable!

Cultural Kyoto

This morning, it’s time to depart Hakone for the nation’s former capital city, Kyoto.

However, you’ve got time to spend a couple of hours exploring the area before we head to the train station. You can either hunt for delicious Japanese snacks for your journey, or pay a visit to the stunning Odawara Castle.

At around midday, we’ll jump on the bullet train for a short transfer, before arriving early afternoon and checking into our next accommodation. Drop your luggage here before joining us on your next unmissable activity – a visit to the iconic Kiyomizu Temple. It’s another of Japan’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, and is arguably one of the most iconic temples in the entire country.

After spending some time exploring the temple, we’ll give you some free time to explore the Gion Area under your own steam. While here, you might want to visit the bustling Pontocho Alley or see the Geisha District. After this, you can either continue exploring the city, or head back to the hostel for a good night’s sleep!

Start your day with a morning visit to the beautiful Fushimi Inari Shrine. While you’re here, following the trails – lined with thousands of iconic red torii gates – leads you to a beautiful hike through the foothills and up Mount Inari. You can either choose to join us for a hike to the top, or stay a little closer to sea level and explore the local area’s street food offerings. If you’re staying here, you could also explore other attractions like the Manga Museum or the Shimogamo Shrine.

In the mid-afternoon, we’ll reconvene, ready to depart for an amazing immersive cultural experience – a traditional calligraphy class in the city. Spend some time with your group learning the art of Japanese calligraphy, and its rich history.

After that, it’s time for dinner! Head out into the local area to find yourself some truly delicious food – and if you want to, you can opt to reconvene with your group to spend an evening taking part in another of Japan’s important cultural pastimes… karaoke!

Free Day In Kyoto

Today, you’ve got a full free day to explore Kyoto as you see fit. If you haven’t already visited them, you might want to explore the Manga Museum or the Shimogamo Shrine. Alternatively, we’d recommend:

Admiring the many majestic temples that adorn the Philosopher’s Path, a canalside walk known for its beauty. Heading west to Arashiyama, to visit the iconic bamboo forests that tower above the pathways. While you’re here, you might also want to pay a visit to Tenryu-ji Temple. Venturing out of the city to visit the famous Todaiji Temple and deer park in Nara. Like all free time, you can of course ask your Adventure Leader for their local suggestions and recommendations on how to spend your time.

Kyoto by Bike

This morning, explore Kyoto like a local – by bike! We’ll spend a half-day exploring the city on a cycling tour. We’ll first ride over to a local Zen temple, where you can discover your inner peace in a meditation session led by a Buddhist monk. After this, you’ll join them for a traditional tea ceremony.

Back on your bike, and off to grab a quick lunch before heading to see the iconic image of Kyoto – the Golden Pavillion at Kinkaku-Ji! From there, we’ll shoot off to take a look around the Imperial Palace, to get your last look at this amazing city before we move on.

This afternoon, we’ll jump on board another bullet train bound for our next destination. We’re heading west to the next stop on our budget Japan tour – Hiroshima. After arriving in the evening, your group has the option of dining together at Okonomiyaki Village for some traditional local cuisine.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

Our morning starts with a visit to the most important place in Hiroshima – the Peace Memorial Museum & Atomic Bomb dome. Dedicated to educating the public on the devastating atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the reflective and powerful museum includes surviving artefacts from the period, and offers in-depth information on the events and the politics of the time.

We’re then heading off-shore to pay a visit to Miyajima Island. Our first stop is the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, an enormous torii gate that stands in the sea. If you’re there at low tide, you can walk across the sand to take a closer look. We’ll then give you some free time to grab lunch, before reconvening to take the Miyajima Ropeway for spectacular views of the island and back across the water.

In the late afternoon, we’ll transfer back to Hiroshima. You’ll have time to explore the city under your own steam – meaning your evening can be as relaxing as you’d like!

Onto Osaka and iconic Osaka Castle

We’re off to our final destination on our budget Japan tour: Osaka! We’ll hop on the bullet train again this morning, arriving into the city in time for lunch. Osaka is known as ‘Japan’s stomach’ – so be sure to try some of the finest food the city has to offer!

Your group will head to Osaka castle this afternoon, where you’ll be able to stroll around the local area before spending some time exploring Osaka on your own time. If you’re in the market for souvenirs, a trip to Shinsaibashi is what you’re after – alternatively, you can grab some snacks or drinks and explore the city’s bustling streets.

It’s the last night of your trip and we want to celebrate in style! You’ll meet back up with your fellow Dragons this evening as we take you to the neon paradise of Dotonbori. It’s a foodie’s heaven here, and we’ll end our trip in style at some local bars.

Return To Tokyo

As your memorable journey draws to a close, bid farewell to newfound friends over breakfast in Osaka before boarding the final bullet train back to Tokyo. Relish the scenic vistas and reminisce about the adventures and cultural marvels encountered during your 13-day budget Japan tour, arriving back in Tokyo at 13:42 pm.

10 Best Japan Tours to Take in 2024

The best japan tours for 2024 make it easy to see the most popular attractions and off-the-beaten-path gems..

Megan duBois

The Scoop: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours

Japan is a bucket list destination for many people, but language barriers can make independent travel difficult. You don’t have to let that stop you, though. Many of the world’s top guided tour operators offer Japan tours that simplify the process of planning trips to Japan and make your vacation time in Japan easy and more enjoyable than going it alone. No matter your interests, there’s a small group tour of Japan to suit your needs.

2024’s Best Small Group Guided Tours of Japan

Whether you want to join a Japan small group tour or an independent tour of Japan with local assistance and backup, this year’s best Japan tours will take you to all of top destinations without having to figure out things like accommodations, public transportation, meals, activities, or travel insurance on your own. Here are my picks for the best Japan tour packages to consider in 2024.

WORLD’S BEST:  15 Best Group Travel Companies for Guided Tours in 2024

Other activities on this trip include attending a traditional tea ceremony, going to a local sake brewery, and seeing the Kofuku-ji, a Buddhist temple with a five-story pagoda. One thing to note about this Japan group tour is that since the flights are included in the cost and the itinerary, the actual sightseeing doesn’t start until day three (and it also helps to explain the price tag of this Japan trip).

  • Length: 13 days
  • Starting price: $7,195
  • Average group size: 16 to 24 people

2. Cultural Treasures of Japan Tour

Beautiful orange torii gates at shrine of Inari in Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto
