Public transport concessions and subsidies

Child, primary and secondary student travel concessions

  • Children aged 3 years and under travel free on public transport in NSW.
  • Children aged 4 - 15 years are entitled to concession fares with the child/youth Opal card.
  • Full-time students aged 16 years and older holding a transport concession entitlement card pay concession fares.
  • Primary and secondary students in NSW may also be entitled to free or subsidised travel to and from school.

Adult concessions

Concession fares are available to:

  • Tertiary and TAFE students
  • Apprentices and trainees
  • Centrelink customers
  • Asylum seekers
  • People with a Vision Impaired Person’s Pass
  • NSW Companion Card holders
  • Veterans and war widows and widowers.

Important dates and submission deadlines for the Assisted School Travel Program.

Families who have a child with a disability may be eligible for transport through the Assisted School Travel Program (ASTP).

Schools are important partners with families in assessing and supporting the safe travel needs of students to and from school.

Assisted Travel Support Officers (ATSOs) are Department employees who provide a high level of supervision and support for students on transport.

Contractors

Contractors provide vehicles and drivers to transport eligible students with a disability to and from school.

ASTP and the NDIS

Transport through the ASTP is provided as an in-kind support for NDIS participants who are eligible to receive an ASTP service.

If your child's application is unsuccessful or their variation is declined you may submit an appeal.

School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS)

Transport NSW provides several options for eligible students as part of the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS), including the:

  • School Opal card for free travel on approved metro, train, bus, ferry and light rail services during school term
  • School term bus passes for students who may not qualify for free school travel
  • School drive subsidy to help cover the cost of using a private vehicle in areas where no public transport is available.

Child/Youth Opal card

When primary school children are not travelling to or from school, they are still entitled to reduced fares using a Child/Youth Opal card.

These can be purchased over the counter from Opal retailers (for example, corner shops or newsagents.)

Other school transport programs

Families who have a child with disability or additional learning needs may be eligible for help through the  Assisted School Travel Program (ASTP) .

    If the journey is only made one-way per day, then the per kilometre rate will be halved.
