The Berlin Welcome Card is available as an online ticket and a printed ticket by mail or as a voucher . When purchasing the Welcome Card, each visitor will also receive the practical Berlin Welcome Card guide. One guide is sufficient per group (maximum 4 people), another guide is needed for each additional person.

Upon presentation of the ticket and the guide, visitors will receive the respective discounts & rebates. When purchasing the Berlin Welcome Card including Museum Island, the visitor gets once-daily free access to the museums on Berlin’s Museum Island (special exhibitions are excluded) during the period of validity.

The printed tickets are valid for the purchased ticket period (48h, 72h or 4, 5, 6 days). Online tickets do not have to be separately validated before being used for the first time . Their period of validity depends on the specified travel date and the time on the online ticket. As regards tickets for 4, 5 or 6 days, the Berlin Welcome Card expires on the last day of validity at 12am.

The Berlin Welcome Card is available as a public transportation ticket with discounts on numerous partners:

  • Berlin (fare zone Berlin AB, valid for one adult and up to 3 children between the ages of 6 and up to and including 14 years old)
  • Berlin+Potsdam (fare zone Berlin ABC, valid for one adult and up to 3 children between the ages of 6 and up to and including 14 years old)

On-site At Berlin tourist information centres, many Berlin hotels as well as at sales outlets and public transport companies' tickets machines (S-Bahn Berlin GmbH and BVG). You can also get the Berlin Welcome Card directly upon arrival in the arrivals area at the Berlin airports. You can then get the associated guide at the Berlin tourist information centres as well as at BVG and S-Bahn sales outlets.

The sections A and B each cover the actual urban area, whereby the outer limit of section B is largely identical to the city limits. Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) is located in fare zone Berlin C . For this reason, tourists arriving at the Berlin-Brandenburg airport needs the Berlin Welcome Card for the fare zone ABC in order to have unrestricted use of public transport. Section C extends – measured from the city limits – up to a distance of 10 to 15 km into the surrounding areas. Exceptions here are tourist and special lines and journeys with Deutsche Bahn. Unfortunately, an extension of the Berlin Welcome Card AB to a connection ticket for tariff zone Berlin C is not possible.

Visitors to Berlin who want to travel to Potsdam or Sachsenhausen need the Berlin Welcome Card for fare zone ABC in order to use the public transport service without any restrictions. An extension of the Berlin Welcome Card AB to a connection ticket for tariff zone C is unfortunately not possible.

It is possible to validate the card up to 31/12 of the calendar year in which the purchase was made. However, the latest period of validity is up to 02/01 (48-hour ticket) or 03/01 (72-hour ticket) or 03/01 at midnight (4-day ticket) or 04/01 at midnight (5-day ticket) or 05/01 at midnight (6-day ticket) of the following year.

The public transport ticket must be validated once before starting the journey in the ticket validation machine . The discounts included in the guide are exclusively valid combined with your Berlin Welcome Card travel ticket and only after its validation.

The guide belongs to the Berlin Welcome Card and must always be presented when claiming discounts. You will receive the guide upon presentation of your Berlin Welcome Card ticket (from the machines) at Berlin tourist information centres as well as at BVG and S-Bahn sales outlets. The guide is also available as a downloadable version .

How to use public transit in Berlin

This guide explains how to use trains, trams, buses and ride sharing in Berlin.

Yellow BVG class HK train

Step 1: Buy a ticket

Where to buy a ticket.

To use intercity trains (IC and ICE), buy a ticket from the Deutsche Bahn website , in the DB Navigator app, a DB Reisezentrum or a DB ticket machine. You can’t buy tickets on the train.

To use everything else ( S-Bahn , U-Bahn , tram, bus, ferry), buy a local public transit ticket. It lets you travel in Berlin and parts of Brandenburg.

You can buy local public transit tickets…

  • At a ticket machine Find a yellow or red ticket machine at the train station. The machines are on the train platforms, near the exits. You can pay with coins, bills, credit cards and Girocards . You can sometimes pay with Apple Pay and Google Pay. The ticket machines speak many languages. Don’t forget to stamp your ticket .
  • Jelbi app   You can also rent cars, bicycles, scooters and mopeds with this app. It’s in English and German.
  • BVG app It’s in English and German.
  • VBB app You can buy tickets for Berlin and Brandenburg . It’s a little harder to use.
  • On the tram Find a yellow ticket machine near the middle of the tram. The old machines only accept coins. The new machines only accept cards. 1
  • On the bus Enter at the front of the bus, and buy a ticket from the driver. Tap your card or phone on the payment terminal near the driver. 15 If you pay cash, ask the driver for a ticket. 14
  • At S-Bahn and BVG service points Buy tickets at S-Bahn and BVG service points .

At the airport , there are ticket machines on the way to the train platforms, just before you go downstairs. You can also install the BVG ticket app before you arrive in Berlin. The airport is in zone C, so you must buy an ABC ticket.

A public transit ticket machine at the Berlin-Brandenburg airport

What ticket to buy

To buy a local public transit ticket…

  • Choose the tariff zone Berlin has 3 tariff zones : A, B and C. Buy an AB or ABC ticket, depending on the zones you travel in. Most things are in zone A or B. The airport is in zone C.
  • Choose the duration of the ticket Single tickets are valid for 2 hours in one direction. There are daily, weekly and monthly passes. Short trip tickets ( Kurzstrecke ) let you travel just a few stops.
  • Choose the type of ticket There are cheaper tickets for children, students, apprentices and dogs . You need a ticket for your bicycle . Daily, weekly and monthly passes sometimes let you bring people for free.

Your ticket is valid for the S-Bahn , the U-Bahn , trams, buses, ferries, regional trains (RE) and some IC and ICE trains . It’s not valid for private buses (Flixbus, Hop-On, Hop-Off ) and tour boats.

A digital Deutschland Ticket in the BVG app

Tariff zones

Berlin has 3 public transit zones: A, B and C.

  • Zone A is central Berlin. It’s everything inside the Ringbahn ; all the central neighbourhoods.
  • Zone B is everything outside the Ringbahn , but inside Berlin.
  • Zone C is outside of Berlin. It includes parts of Brandenburg like the Berlin-Brandenburg airport, Potsdam and Oranienburg.

Most things are in zone A or B, so you usually need an AB ticket. If you go to the airport, you need an ABC ticket.

If you already have an AB ticket, and you want to go to zone C, get an extention ticket ( Anschlussfahrausweis ) . It’s cheaper than an ABC ticket.

If you have a Deutschland Ticket , you can travel in all zones.

Ticket duration

Single tickets are valid for 2 hours in one direction. You can take as many trains, buses and ferries as you want with the same ticket. You can stop, do some shopping, and take the train again. Your ticket only works in one direction. To go back, you must buy a new ticket.

Short trip tickets let you travel 3 train tops, or 6 bus or tram stops. If you buy them in the app, they are valid for 20 minutes. 2

Daily, monthly and weekly passes are cheaper. They usually let you bring other people for free .

The Deutschland Ticket is a monthly subscription. You can use all public transit in Germany for 49 € per month.

Ticket types

  • Standard ticket This is the ticket most people need.
  • Reduced price ticket ( Ermäßigungstarif ) Children between 6 and 15 years old need a reduced price ticket. Dogs too. Most tickets let you bring children for free . Some tickets let you bring a dog for free .
  • Student ticket ( Schülerticket , Ausbildungsticket ) Students and apprentices get a free monthly pass . Apply for it here or here .
  • Bicycle ticket ( Fahrradkarte ) You need a bicycle ticket for your bicycle. –  How to bring bikes on public transit .

List of ticket types  – S-Bahn Berlin

If you get caught without a ticket

There are ticket checkers who enter the train and look at everyone’s tickets. They wait until the doors close, so you can’t run away. If your ticket is not valid, you get a 60 € fine.

If you have the wrong ticket, you still get a fine.

If you bought your ticket with the app, show them the ticket QR code in the app.

How to pay a BVG fine

Step 2: Validate your ticket

Stamp your ticket before you use it . If your ticket is not stamped, it’s not valid. There are stamping machines on train platforms, and inside trams and buses. Look for a yellow or red metal box, and put your ticket in the slit.

Validate german train ticket

If you buy a ticket on the bus or tram, it’s already stamped. Monthly passes are already stamped. 4

Digital tickets are valid 1 minute after you buy them. 3 Buy your ticket before you get on the train.

Step 3: Use public transport

Get on the bus, tram, train or ferry, and go where you want to go. Get directions from Google Maps ( iOS or Android ) or BVG Fahrinfo . BVG Fahrinfo has more accurate information.

Go in the right direction

BVG daisy status display

The display shows a train’s last stop, not its direction. For example, the S2’s last stop could be in Bernau, Buch or Blankenburg. These trains all go in the same direction, but their last stops are not the same.

Take the bus or tram

When your bus or tram arrives, stand on the side, and let other people exit before you enter. If you stand in front of the door, you block people who try to leave.

You can use any door to get on the bus. You don’t need to show your ticket to the driver. 16

Before your stop, press the yellow or red “STOP” button near you. You will hear a “ding” sound. You will see “STOP” in the corner of the information screen. The bus will stop at the next bus stop.

To open the doors, you might need to press a button near the doors.

Public transport in Berlin

Sightseeing using public transport

Discover Berlin comfortably, safely and cheaply to Berlin's sights : Use the well-developed network of S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains, buses and trams. Here we inform you about tariffs, timetables and contacts of Berlin's public transport system.

Tariffs for Berlin's public transport

Overview of ticket prices

Please note: Tickets must be validated when travelling .

In this video we show you How to use public transport in Berlin

How do I validate a ticket?

Ein Ticket am Automaten entwerten

In Berlin, there are no turnstiles in front of the entrances to the platforms. When using regional rail services and the S-Bahn and U-Bahn , tickets must be validated on the platform. To do this, you will find small devices that are attached to a column and click or beep as soon as you insert the ticket. The direction in which you have to insert the ticket is described on the device. Once it has clicked, your ticket should be stamped with the current date and time of validation.

In the case of buses and trams , the devices are located inside the vehicle, where you can use them as soon as you have boarded. If you have purchased your ticket via app, make sure you activate the ticket before starting your journey. You can recognise an activated app ticket by the fact that the usage time expires.

Attention: Public transport in Berlin is based on independence and trust. Nevertheless, ticket inspections are carried out at regular intervals. The staff checking the tickets may be in plain clothes. The check is announced by the words "Die Fahrscheine bitte" and the ticket inspectors identify themselves at the beginning of the check without being asked by means of an official ID card. If you do not have a valid ticket with you, you will be fined.

Purchasing tickets via app

You can purchase tickets for local public transport using various apps. It doesn't matter which provider you bought your ticket from, as long as the correct zones are covered by your ticket.

  • BVG ticket app
  • Ticket-App  S-Bahn
  • Ticket-App VBB

Special tickets that combine public transport with discounts for tourists cannot be purchased in all apps. These include the Berlin Welcome Card . You can either buy this online in advance or on site at one of our Berlin Tourist Info - to be found at BER Airport and the main railway station, among other places.

Opening times for public transport

On weekdays, public transport in Berlin runs roughly between four in the morning and half past one at night . There are also special night buses, which you can recognise by the "N" in front of their route number. On the nights Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday , public transport runs 24 hours , that means all night long without a break.
