Escape the crowds and enjoy an authentic safari experience at Porini Amboseli Camp

Porini Amboseli Camp is located within the private and almost exclusive Selenkay Conservancy that lies a few kilometres north of the famed Amboseli National Park.

The Selenkay Conservancy offers guests an authentic safari experience away from all the minibuses and tourists of the Amboseli eco system. If excellent guiding, fantastic wildlife sightings and an authentic safari experience are what you are looking for, look no further. Porini Amboseli is fantastic and comes highly recommended.

Wildlife that can be spotted and photographed includes; elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, Thompson's and Grant's gazelles, gerenuk, impala, oryx, lesser kudu, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, warthog, striped hyena, jackal, bat-eared fox, caracal, African wild cat, serval cat, genet cat, honey badger and mongoose.

Birdlife is prolific, especially birds of prey for those of us out there that enjoy birding as a hobby.

The camp also offers excellent game drives and night drives within Selenkay Conservancy in safari vehicles with open roofs, ideal for photography lovers. An experienced professional guide will ensure you take away memories of a lifetime.

Guests can also enjoy escorted walks with experienced local Maasai guides.

For those wanting to experience the culture of the area, Porini Amboseli Camp also offers a visit to a traditional Maasai village, complete with learning about their way of life and customs.

The 10 tented suites provide comfortable accommodation in spacious tents with en-suite bathrooms and private verandahs.

The recommended stay at Porini Amboseli Camp is 3-7 nights; longer stays are also available for an even deeper wildlife experience.

Porini Amboseli Camp offers a unique safari experience away from the crowds in one of East Africa’s most iconic and popular destinations.

Rooms and Suites

Porini Amboseli Camp offers guests just 10 large and authentic tented safari suites with private verandahs, twin/king-sized bedding and en-suite bathrooms(with a flush toilet, shower and wash basin).

The decor is more of a rustic affair but well suited for a safari camp of this nature.

Note: there are charging facilities in-room.

Cuisine and Wine

The cuisine is based on a set menu experience with hearty breakfasts, light lunches and three-course dinners; all served in and around the central guest area.

Porini Amboseli is a fully inclusive camp and includes all meals and local drinks (gin, vodka, wine, beer, sodas and mineral water).

Most dietary requirements are with advanced notice catered for.

The central guest area is a basic yet functional affair; mess tent area offers guests an indoor dining area and a small lounge. Outdoors, a firepit awaits for those after-dinner stories.

The camp runs purely off solar energy, there are no electrical outlets in the guest tents whatsoever, and all battery charging for cameras and phones is done in the manager's office.

There are no permanent structures in the camp, and therefore no swimming pool, although there is a small gift shop.

Instead, Porini Amboseli offers guests as pure a safari experience as one can get in Africa.

Expert safari guides and trackers lead game drives in open-sided 4x4 safari vehicles; game drives are the main safari attraction when staying at Porini Amboseli Camp in the Selenkay Conservancy (one of the best wildlife conservancies in the area).

Morning, afternoon and full-day (with picnic lunch) game drives are available, as are night drives, as Porini Amboseli Camp is located in a private concession.

For those interested in stretching their legs, an escorted safari/cultural walk is an option during the course of the day.

In Conclusion

If you're looking for an authentic Amboseli National Park safari experience, look no further than Porini Amboseli Camp.

With just 10 suites, this camp offers a more intimate and personal experience than some of the larger safari lodges. The central guest area is basic but functional, and all meals are included in the price.

Game drives in the conservation area are the main attraction here, led by expert guides who will help you spot wildlife in their natural habitat. If you're interested in stretching your legs, an escorted cultural or bushwalking experience is also available.

So if you want to get up close and personal with Africa's amazing wildlife, be sure to check out Porini Amboseli Camp!

How They Dazzle Us

For those for whom the wildlife safari experience is more important than the accommodation, and who are prepared to sleep in small tents in sleeping bags with an element of “roughing it”, this gives an opportunity for an exceptional and exclusive wildlife experience with high quality guiding but at a much lower price. All the big cats can be seen in this conservancy as well as elephants and a wide range of species including large numbers of giraffes, zebra, and antelopes. A stay at this camp is not complete without a night drive which is an amazing opportunity to see the game at their busiest.

Why We Love Them

This is one of the best game viewing and safari spots around, situated as it is on a 15000 acre private wilderness in the heart of Maasai country near Amboseli. But that is not why we love them. We love them for the completely unpretentious approach they bring. With key focusses on cost saving, comfort and a genuine African experience, this is a high quality wildlife safari experience, similar to those as provided at the other permanent camps. It offers game viewing in 4×4 safari vehicles escorted by professional Maasai guides and spotters in an exclusive wildlife conservancy far away from the crowds; Where this is different however is that it is at a hugely reduced price, achieved by staying in a more basic camp, which is more like “traditional camping” instead of the luxury accommodation of the more up-market tented camps.

Their Sustainable Superpower

This Camp is carefully managed to ensure that local communities, the environment and visitors can all benefit from the Conservancy concept. Like all Porini Camps the company ensures that the communities living alongside national parks and reserves derive tangible benefits from conserving the indigenous habitat for wildlife. Locals are trained to work as staff within the camp; community members are also employed to build and maintain roads and to work as wardens as a part of the conservancy anti-poaching initiatives.

Small and insect proof these dome tents are more akin to traditional camping tents than the luxury 'tents' on offer at many safari resorts. It's a proper camping experience with guests expected to bring their own sleeping bags and towels (alternatively these can be hired). Each tent has its own private bathroom in a cubicle located that is just behind the tent. The bathroom has a flush toilet, wash basin and safari shower. For those who are expecting the full camping experience don't worry, an experienced safari cook at the camp prepares the daily meals.

Our Thoughts on Selenkay Adventure Camp, Amboseli

Adventure Camping is a great way for those on a budget to experience an authentic safari in Kenya with expert guides and 4×4 vehicles. While the accommodation is basic, the camp facilities are excellent (comparable to luxury camps) and the Maasai staff will take care of your every need. What makes this itinerary even more special:

  • Fly-in Safari: Flights from Nairobi (Wilson) to the Masai Mara are included in the cost. More time on safari, less time on the road!
  • Private Conservancies: Being in Ol Kinyei, a private conservancy allows you to view wildlife in an undisturbed and exclusive manners. No outsiders are allowed in the conservancies.
  • Off-roading and night game drives: Because you are in a conservancy, off-roading and night game drives are permitted.
  • Nature walks: Go on nature walks with the local Maasais.
  • Expert guides & 4×4 vehicles: The guides at the adventure camps are extremely well-trained and experienced. The vehicle quality (usually open on all sides) is better than even some luxury camps.

The Amboseli Ecosystem

Elephants’ heaven crowned by Mt. Kilimanjaro

Porini Locations

Selenkay conservancy.

Kilimanjaro.jpg

Camps & Itineraries

The amboseli ecosystem, a true accumulation of superlatives.

The location of Amboseli National Park makes it a huge attraction for inclusion in a Kenya safari holiday. The whole park is overlooked by the world famous views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro is undoubtedly best seen at dusk or dawn when low hanging clouds thin out to reveal the iced summit of this continent’s highest mountain. This backdrop has contributed to this park being amongst the most visited in Kenya, which has brought its own drawbacks . Years of tourism and off-road excursions have impacted on the park making it appear rather dusty, overused and eroded. A program to improve access with new roads and a much tougher stance taken against off-roading are gradually remedying the situation.

A habitat rehabilitation success story

10 miles north of the boundary of Amboseli Park is the Selenkay Conservancy. Selenkay shares the same eco-system as Amboseli and is established on 12,500 acres of land within the nearly 200,000 acres Eselenkei Group Ranch leased from the local Maasai by Gamewatchers Safaris with the aim of protecting the wildlife habitat and encouraging wildlife conservation as an alternative to farming as a means for the local population to earn a living.

Biodiversity

Amboseli ecosystem.

The Amboseli region is most famous for its elephant population; over 1,000 live in the fragile eco-system, and records show them to be amongst some of the biggest elephants in Africa.

Elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hartebeest and gazelle all migrate with the rains in search of green flushes and draw back to permanent swamps in search of water and pasture each dry season. Here densely packed herds attract an array of predators, including lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena.

The dry bush country harbours giraffe, eland, gerenuk, lesser kudu and a host of smaller animals. Add a rich variety of birds and the dramatic backdrop of Kilimanjaro and it is no wonder that Amboseli is one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes, and a favorite tourist destination.
